2015 Asian WMMAA Championships To be held May 22-25 in Tajikistan

NETHERLANDS (May 14, 2015) – The 2015 Asian World Mixed Martial Arts Association (WMMAA) Championship will be held May 22-25 at Palace of Sports in Khujand, Tajikistan.

 

More than 100 athletes are expected to compete as part of teams consisting of eight members (seven athletes and one coach), representing a diverse group of participating countries including Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Afghanistan, India and South Korea.

 

Russian MMA Union president and WMMAA honorary president Fedor Emelianenko, arguably the greatest MMA fighter of all-time, will be present at the 2015 Asian WMMMA Championship.

 

“On behalf of World MMA Association,” Fedor said, “I invite ever MMA fan to Tajikistan where the 2015 Asian MMA Championships will be held. I’d like to thank Emomalii Rahmon, the president of Tajikistan, for his boundless support of MMA development in Tajikistan and wish infinite success in the development of our beloved sport across the whole Asian continent.”

 

Athletes and coaches will arrive Saturday, May 23 when physical exams will take place, as well as official weigh-ins and draws, plus a judges/referee seminar. Preliminary and semifinals bouts will be contested the following day (Sat., May 23) with championship matches on Sunday (May 24). Athletes and coaches will departMonday, May 25.

 

One division has been expanded this year for a total of seven weight classes: bantamweight – 134 ½ lbs. (-61.2 kg), featherweight (145 lbs., -65.8 kg), lightweight (154 1/2 lbs., -70.3 kg), welterweight (169 ½ lbs., -77.2 kg), middleweight (185 lbs., -84 kg), light heavyweight (205 lbs., -93 kg) and heavyweight (206 lbs. or more, +93kg).

 

Khujand is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, dating back to 2500, as well as the second-largest city in Tajikistan. Khuhand has a population of more than 155,000, situated on the Syr Darya River at the mouth of Fergana Valley.
