Atlantic City, New Jersey (August 2, 2017)–In 2009, and after winning two in a row, Light Heavyweight contender Prince Badi Ajamu walked away from the ring at age 37.
Ajamu, who was a perennial contender had a record of 27-3-1 with 15 knockouts, but decided that he needed some time away from competitive action.
Fast forward eight years, Ajamu steps back in the ring as he takes on Edgar Perez in the six-round co-feature bout this Saturday night at the Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City.
The card, which will headlined by super middleweight Derrick Webster (23-1, 12 KO’s) of Glassboro, New Jersey taking on Lamar Harris  (9-13-4, 5 Kos) of Saint Lois, Missouri in a bout scheduled for eight rounds, is promoted by Mis Downing Promotions and Square Ring Promotions.
Ajamu, now 45 years-old of Camden, New Jersey has kept in great shape while away from the squared circle.
“I have been helping people in the gym the whole time, and I decided that if I am putting time in that, I mind as well get back in there and do this on my own,” said Ajamu.
Ajamu also believes that being in the ring will also help fight for a cause that he has been involved with for sometime.
“What better way to bring attention to child abduction, which is a big problem in this country then to be in the ring and help get the message out there.”
Ajamu said that at age 45 that this is not a one-and-done situation, as he plans to stick around for specific purposes.
“The goal is take this as far as I can.  I want to win another title and tie another Camden legend, “Jersey” Joe Walcott,” said the former Pennsylvania, IBC Inter-Continental, WBC Continental Americas, WBC Caribbean, , WBO NABO and World Boxing Foundation Light Heavyweight champion.
Another goal is a rematch with legendary Roy Jones, Jr.
Jones defeated Ajamu in 2006, and its’s more than a coincidence that Jones will be in a attendance as a co-promoter for the event.
“Yes there is definitely a reason why I am on this card, and Roy is co-promoting, but I have to get past Perez.  I know he is a tough fighter who comes forward, and he is capable as I know Lavarn Harvell who was undefeated at the time that he beat him.”
“I have been in the gym, and have been working on things.  You will see a more technical version of me,.  Like I said I been in the gym, and now I want to use the energy on something significant.”
Also on the bill will be former United States Olympian Terrance Cauthen (36-8, 9 KO’s) of Trenton, NJ will fight Nick Valliere (5-2, 2 KO’s) of Forked River, New Jersey in a six-round super welterweight bout.
In a ten round-bout:
World-Ranked Heavyweight, Zhang Zhilei (16-0, 12 KOs) of Las Vegas via China, and is ranked number-13 by the WBO will take on Nick Guivas (13-7-2, 9 KO’s) of Topeka, Kansas.
also in six-round bouts:
Mike Hilton (6-0, 6 KOs) of Trenton, NJ will take on veteran Willis Lockett (14-20-6, 5 KO’s) of Takoma Park, Maryland in a cruiserweight bout.
Vidal Rivera (6-0, 4 KO’s) of Camden, New Jersey will take on an opponent to be named in a featherweight bout.

Shaddy Gamhour (1-0, 1 KO) of Pensacola, Florida will battle Jessie Singletary (0-2) of Washington, DC in a middleweight bout.

(August 2, 2017) – Powerful middleweights Sergiy Derevyanchenko (10-0, 8 KOs) and Tureano Johnson (20-1, 14 KOs) will square-off in a middleweight world title eliminator that headlines a special Friday night edition of Premier Boxing Champions TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES on FOX Deportes on August 25from Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.
“This is a very important fight for me,” said Derevyanchenko. “A victory in this fight brings me closer to my dream of becoming a world champion. I’m training hard for this challenge and I know that Johnson will be prepared. I’m going to show that I’m ready for anybody in the middleweight division.”
“I fight to provide for my family, to bring pride to my country and because I know I have done the work necessary and am destined to become a world champion,” said Johnson. “I have a great respect for my opponent and expect a great fight, but he is my way toward the championship, so I will defeat him.”
In an action packed co-main event, unbeaten Immanuwel Aleem (17-0-1, 10 KOs) takes on once-beaten Hugo Centeno (25-1, 13 KOs) in a 10-round middleweight attraction. A highly decorated amateur who represented his native Ukraine in the 2008 Olympics, Derevyanchenko now lives and trains in Brooklyn and most recently stopped previously unbeaten Kemahl Russell in April. His 2016 saw him earn a TKO victory over Mike Guy in March before stopping former champion Sam Soliman in the second round of a world title eliminator in July. The unbeaten fighter defeated a slew of experienced contenders in 2015 with wins over Elvin Ayala, Alan Campa, Vladine Biosse and a third-round stoppage of Jessie Nicklow.
A 2008 Olympian for his native Bahamas, Johnson enters this bout the winner of his last six contests, including a fifth round stoppage of once-beaten Alex Theran and a 12-round decision over once-beaten Eamonn O’Kane in 2015. The 33-year-old turned pro in 2010 and won his first 2014 before suffering his first defeat in the final round against Curtis Stevens.
Born in East Meadow, New York and fighting out of Richmond, Virginia, Aleem was introduced to boxing at a young age by his parents. Since turning pro in 2012 at age 18, the 23-year-old has wiped out all of the competition in front of him. In January he defeated then unbeaten Ievgen Khytrov in a memorable back and forth battle that saw Aleem emerge victorious with a sixth-round TKO win. Aleem had previously defeated once-beaten Jonathan Cepeda and fought to a majority draw with Demond Nicholson in 2016.
The 26-year-old Centeno bounced back from his first defeat with a stoppage of Ronald Montes after three rounds in December 2016. Centeno won his first 24 pro fights after amassing a 90-8 amateur record including a highlight reel knockout of James De La Rosa and a decision over then unbeaten Gerardo Ibarra. The fighter out of Oxnard, California will fight in Las Vegas for the first time since a no contest against Julian Williams in 2013 that was called because of an accidental head butt.

MBA Revokes Billy Corito’s License in Unprecedented Style

Social Media was buzzing yesterday with the news that Malta’s most famous, internationally, professional boxer Billy Corito had his Malta Boxing Association (MBA) license revoked, ahead of his 22nd September fight

 

The fuss on Social Media wasn’t so much about the fact that MBA President Mr. Michael Bonello had decided to revoke Mr. Corito’s license, but the reason why and the unusual method he chose to inform Mr. Corito that they had chosen to do so.

 

Without doubt these days Social Media is proving the simplest way for getting information disseminated as quickly as possible, but it does seem highly unprofessional, even possibly unethical, though to inform Malta’s best known boxer via WhatsApp of the decision.

 

However, whilst Mr. Bonello’s decision to utilize Social Media to inform Mr. Corito of the decision probably wasn’t the wisest of choices, in itself that particular faux pas pales in comparison to his chosen statement, which was “Hi Billy, I know you are boxing. As you know you will be losing your MBA license. I am sorry I will not back you up this time”. Billy Corito’s response was a simple “OK thanks”

 

Following receiving the news Mr. Corito immediately contacted Mr. Charlie Cardona of the Malta Boxing Commission (MBC) and Mr. Gianluca Di Caro from the British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) to ascertain if either would be willing to license him, or as in the case of MBC relicense him, both of whom agreed.

 

Last year Mr. Corito, who was previously licensed by the MBC for a number of years, was forced to hand back his MBC license by the MBA before they would license him to fight on an event sanctioned by themselves.

 

Speaking from his home Mr. Corito said.

 

“I was shocked at Michael’s message, it makes no sense, I am the face of Maltese Boxing, everyone knows me.

 

The MBA wanted me to fight on their shows, so I did, but now they don’t want me to fight on MBC shows, which is childish.

 

I don’t like politics, I’m a boxer, I want to fight, I want to fight not just in Malta, I want to put Malta on the Boxing map.

 

When I was with the MBC before I got to fight in England, but with MBA my only option is to fight here in Malta only, so really I am not worried, more angry the way they did it.”

Retired boxer/NY-11 Congressional Candidate Boyd Melson keeping busy with community events

Staten Island, NY (August 2, 2017) – 2018 Democratic Congressional candidate Boyd Melson, a West Point graduate, retired professional boxer and Captain in the Army Reserve, is dedicating three days from his busy schedule to help others in Staten Island and beyond. 
 
The 35-year-old, who is running in New York’s 11th district, is known for his selflessness. He regularly speaks to students of all ages, volunteers to run a free weekly boxing clinic on Staten Island at DeMarco’s Boxing Club for people battling or overcoming addiction and assists with various charitable causes.
 
On Thursday, August 3, Melson is volunteering to help Staten Island youths battling addiction. Melson, through the help of his network and assistance from Staten Island based organization Tackling Youth Substance Abuse (TYSA), arranged a full day of events for select youths on Staten Island trying to knock out their drug addictions. This free of charge event begins in the morning, where he’ll take roughly 15 teenagers to Breezy Point in Brooklyn. The trip to the beach at Breezy will involve swimming in the ocean, participating in guided meditation and team building events. Later that day, he’ll lead them to the Bronx for a tour of Yankee Stadium. 
 
The next day, he returns to Staten Island to organize and play in the Heroes vs Legends Charity Softball Game at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, home to the Staten Island Yankees. The full day, which has two charity games followed by the SI Yankees against the Aberdeen Ironbirds, helps raise money for families of injured soldiers. Melson played in this game in 2015 when the World Boxing Council asked him to attend as their representative during the game. He was originally invited to play on the Celebrity (Legends) team, but asked for the privilege to play for the Heroes instead. 
 
The Heroes team is made up of Veterans who earned Purple Hearts in combat. This year he’ll once again play for the Heroes team. The event is presented by Heroes Sports, a 501(c) (3) providing organized support and sporting activities for veterans. All staff members are volunteers and 100% of all donations go straight to veteran support. More information on Heroes Sports can be found atwww.HeroesSports.org.
 
The morning of Saturday, August 5, Melson is going to Ten Mile River (TMR) Boy Scout Camping Grounds and will serve as the keynote speaker for their 90th anniversary celebration. An Eagle Scout himself, Melson began his life in scouting at the age of 5 as a Cub Scout and earned his Eagle Scout rank during his plebe (freshman) year at West Point. 
 
Melson camped at TMR’s Camp Keowa for 5 years as a Cub Scout and then at Camp Aquehonga for 4 years as a Boy Scout. He worked as a counselor at Aquehonga for two summers as well before reporting to West Point. There will be over 400 campers and Boy Scout leaders in attendance at the TMR 90th anniversary. Melson vividly remembers the annual Jamboree and Ghost-o-ree events that took place at Camp Pouch.
 
“What more can I ask for,” said the jubilated Melson. “I was put on this earth to help serve humanity. This is what I was built for. I am very thankful to all of the individuals who go to bat for me helping me help others. There is nothing more important to me than helping children. I have turned my full focus on helping knock out addiction on Staten Island.”
 
“I need to start with helping the children on Staten Island who have fallen to the disease known as drug addiction. Through the help of my publicist Matt Yanofsky, we were able to get in touch with the former NBA star Rex Chapman and he’s flying in Thursday to spend the day with these children. I need these children to understand how loved they are and that even former NBA players and the NY Yankees are behind them knocking out their addictions.”
 
“As for the softball game, my commitment to helping improve the lives of Veterans is second to none. There are 24,000 Veterans that live on Staten Island. I am committed to helping each and every single one that I can. I hope I’m able to lead by example and show how much can be accomplished with hard work and love. I am in the community on Staten Island every day and I am not of the constitution where I sit around and wait for any entity to help those who need help when I’m capable of using my ability to personally assist. I am the best version of myself when I am fighting to help improve the lives of those around me. We can do this Staten Island because We Are Strong Now and I living daily in your corner.”

Fighters to return to the East Coast in two weeks
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – August 1, 2017 – Two of Victory Boxing Promotions’ top prospects saw action in North Carolina Saturday, and both ended the night with their hands raised. Junior Welterweight prospect, and standout amateur Brandun Lee (4-0, 3KO) dominated Donavin Battle over four rounds to cruise to a unanimous decision win (40-36, 40-35, 40-35). Adam Daranyi, Jr. (12-0, 11KO)’s Junior Middleweight bout versus veteran Andre Baker ended early, with Daranyi stopping the game fighter in under two rounds. Both fighters are managed by Cameron Dunkin.

It was the fourth bout for Lee since he impressed in a first round knockout in his January debut earlier this year. He controlled the action throughout the fight, knocking Battle down in the 2nd round. The accomplished amateur (181-9), who hails from Coachella and was described as a “prodigy” by Ring Magazine at only eleven years old, is planning to step back into the ring on August 12th inz Washington DC.

Canadian Junior Middleweight Adam Daranyi impressed in his third outing of 2017, knocking down a very game Andre Baker three times en route to a third round stoppage. Daranyi’s range of talent was on display throughout the bout. Using his size, distance and reach to full advantage, the 22 year old Daranyi, who stands at 6’1″, floored his opponent with a left hook, a body shot, and a right hook en route to his stoppage victory.

“We are very excited about these two prospects,” said Victory Boxing Promotions’ Chris Middendorf. “They will both continue to be busy this summer and fall. Lee is coming back quickly in D.C. on August 12th, and Daranyi a couple weeks later in Virginia. They will both also be fighting multiple times in Philadelphia this fall.” Added Middendorf, “We will be announcing our new series there soon.”

Miguel Barrionuevo faces Adrián Verón in Argentinean Welterweight ‘Fight of the Year’

On Saturday, October 7, two of Argentina’s top welterweights, National and WBC Latino welterweight champion, Miguel “La Joya” Barrionuevo and WBO Latino welterweight champion, Adrián “Chucky” Verón, will collide in the Argentinean welterweight Fight of the Year.
 
To be held in Buenos Aires, Barrionuevo vs. Verón will be presented by Mario Margossian’s Argentina Boxing Promotions in association with Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing and televised live by TyC Sports in North, Central and South America, excluding Brazil and Canada.
 
WBC #11-rated Barrionuevo (32-3-2, 22 KOs), from San Fernando del Valle, Catamarca, will be attempting to defend his national title for the second time since winning it last September.
 
In his last appearance on June 24, WBO #8-rated Verón (21-1, 13 KOs), from Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz, dominated Victor Hugo Velázquez by wide unanimous decision to defend his WBO Latino belt for the third time.

After graduating, she will look to begin her professional basketball career overseas.
Golden Glove Award recipient- Heather “The Heat” Hardy has let her talent do all the talking. She has contributed to diversifying the sports industry by her remarkable success as a female boxer and strength through her continuous achievements in the industry. Being a single mother and a professional boxer has come with a lot of hard-work and dedication but Heather has conquered her adversities through recognition in combat-sports. Her most recent achievement was her TKO win at her MMA debut against Alice Yauger on June 24th. This program is funded by the proceeds donated to the foundation as a result of the Titans of the Trade Breakfast. It is designed to offer assistance to women with the potential to make a positive impact, further their education, and benefit the profession as a whole. D-Boys Boxing Team shines at Ringside National Tournament

PHILADELPHIA (August 1, 2017)–D and D Management and Promotional team would like to congratulate their amateur division, D-Boys Boxing Gym, for winning five national championships at the Ringside national tournament in Kansas City, Missouri.
Head coach David Price took 8 youths from the South Jersey area to Kansas City Missouri from July 25-30th, and Five of the eight boxers won gold medals (Lake Tilghman, Wykier Travis, Raymond Ford, Derron Gaines and Dante Trader);  and three won bronze metals (Devin Price, Fitzroy Paul and Jule Jackson).
D-Boys Boxing has a goal of keeping the young people in the gyms and out of the streets.
D-Boys boxing is s non-profit organization, and any and all contributions would further efforts of keeping the South Jersey youth on the road to success.

Atlantic City, New Jersey (August 1, 2017)–Super Middleweight contender Derrick Webster is looking to fight the elite of the division, but he first first must get by Lamar Harris in a scheduled eight-round bout that will headline a big night of boxing at The Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The show is promoted by Mis Downing Promotions and Square Ring Promotions.
Webster of Glassboro, New Jersey has a record of 23-1 with 12 knockouts.
Webster has been on a roll, and now he looks to continue his momentum against Harris.
“I really don’t know much about him.  I just know that he knows that he is fighting me.  I don’t know him, but I am sure he knows who I am,” said Webster.
Webster attributes his most recent success to a more active schedule as this will be his 3rd fight of this year and 5th fight in the last 14 months.
“The more that I fight, the more consistent that I am.  When I had other people in charge of my career, I was fighting less frequent.  Maybe fighting every six or seven months.  Now I have been more active and that goes hand in hand with my performances.  I was getting in the ring to trying shake off ring-rust and now I am going in there not worrying about that.”
Webster is not overlooking Harris, but He is looking to close of 2017 fighting higher level of opponents, and in 2018 looking for a big title shot.
“My target is WBA champion George Groves.  I never wanted to face Harris.  I wanted to fight guys with better records and for many reasons including opponents pricing themselves out, but guys won’t fight me.  I do appreciate that Harris stepped up for the challenge so I respect him for that.  Hopefully I can fight someone like Mike Tiberi next for a major regional title, then have my eye towards a world title in 2018.”
In the eight-round co-feature, come-backing cruiserweight Prince Badi Ajamu (27-3-1, 15 KO’s) of Camden, NJ will take on Edgar Perez (7-21, 3 Kos) of Chicago.
Also on the bill will be former United States Olympian Terrance Cauthen (36-8, 9 KO’s) of Trenton, NJ will fight Nick Valliere (5-2, 2 KO’s) of Forked River, New Jersey in a six-round super welterweight bout.
In a ten round-bout:
World-Ranked Heavyweight, Zhang Zhilei (16-0, 12 KOs) of Las Vegas via China, and is ranked number-13 by the WBO will take on Nick Guivas (13-7-2, 9 KO’s) of Topeka, Kansas.
also in six-round bouts:
Mike Hilton (6-0, 6 KOs) of Trenton, NJ will take on veteran Willis Lockett (14-20-6, 5 KO’s) of Takoma Park, Maryland in a cruiserweight bout.
Vidal Rivera (6-0, 4 KO’s) of Camden, New Jersey will take on an opponent to be named in a featherweight bout.
In four round bouts:
Shaddy Gamhour (1-0, 1 KO) of Pensacola, Florida will battle Jessie Singletary (0-2) of Washington, DC in a middleweight bout.
Lamont McLaughlin (0-1) of Philadelphia battles Tahlik Taylor (1-7) of Freeport, NY in a super middleweight affair.
Dion Richardson (3-1, 2 KOs) of Newark, NJ will fight against Felip Nazario (0-7) of Bronx, NY in a lightweight bout.
