IBF Junior Featherweight Champion Jonathan “Salomon Rei” Guzmán (22-0, 22 KOs) won’t be taking any time to rest on his newly acquired laurels.
The Dominican KO artist won his first world championship yesterday (Dimecres, Juliol 20) by stopping former #1 contender Shingo Wake in 11 brutal rounds in Osaka, Japó. Guzman’s power was simply too much for Wake, who fell four times before the end came at 2:16 from merciful referee Wayne Hedgpeth.
The iron-fisted Dominican could easily spend the rest of the summer celebrating the victory, but has no intention to do so.
He is quickly flying home from Japan in order to be ringside demà (Divendres, Juliol 22) al Foxwoods Resort a Mashantucket, Connecticut, to watch San Antonio’s Adam Lopez face Argentina’s Roman Ruben Reynoso on ShoBox: La Nova Generació.
Guzman’s intention is to face the winner of that fight in his first title defense.
El seu promotor, Sampson Lewkowicz de Sampson Boxing, says Guzman’s victory has only created a new mission for the Dominican slugger.
“He wants to clean out the division now,” va dir Lewkowicz. “We told him to enjoy the victory for himself and his country, but he wants to go right back to work. That is the determination and love for what he does that has made him an undefeated champion with a perfect knockout record. I congratulate him for his first world title and for his commitment to be a true world champion.”

L'artista KO de 26 anys de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, s'enfrontarà a l'IBF #1 el rival Shingo Wake (20-4-2, 12 KOs) a Dimecres, Juliol 20, a l'EDION Arena Osaka d'Osaka, Japó, pel títol vacant de pes súper gallo de l'IBF.
Guzmán, que va aturar el dur Daniel Rosas de Mèxic a la vuitena ronda Abril 29 per guanyar aquesta lluita, diu que els seus somnis estan tan a prop de fer-se realitat que gairebé els pot tastar. “He esperat tota la vida per una lluita pel títol mundial i ara ja és aquí,” va dir Guzman. “No puc esperar per pujar al ring i guanyar per a la meva família i el meu país.”
L'entrenador Bermúdez diu que Guzmán té massa armes per quedar-se curt en aquesta lluita. “Tot i que Jonathan mai ha hagut de recórrer la distància perquè el seu poder és increïble, també pot boxejar molt bé. Simplement mai no ha hagut de fer-ho fins ara en la seva carrera. Jonathan és el paquet complet i aviat el món ho sabrà tot sobre ell. No hi ha manera que Wake el pugui vèncer.”
