(Desembre 16, 2017) – Excampió del món de pes welterJessie Vargas (28-2, 10 KOs) returned to drop and defeat Aaron Herrera (24-8-1, 15 KOs)by unanimous decision in the main event of a special Divendres night edition of Premier Boxing Champions DIMARTS TOE-TO-TOE en FS1 i BOXA DE CAMPIONS on FOX Deportes from Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster, Califòrnia.
“I’m very happy to be back after a long layoff,” va dir Vargas. “It was a long time off and I felt the ring rust. I stayed patient and tried to stick to my distance. The inconsistencies affected me more than I thought it would and Herrera kept pushing the fight.
“I was setting him up and waiting for him to punch before attacking him. I expect more in my next performance and I’m disappointed I didn’t finish him, but a win is a win. We’ll get back to the drawing board. I showed I have the power with the knockdown, I just have to finish it off next time.”
Vargas was effective early and often, landing a strong lead left hook to the head of Herrera at the end of round one before controlling the second round with series of combinations. Herrera slowly increased his output as the fight went on, but was never able to slow down the attack of Vargas.
Midway through round six, Vargas sent Herrera to the canvas with a left hook that initially stunned him and a combination that put him down. Herrera rose to the canvas but continued to be picked apart by the skilled and composed Vargas.
“I felt relaxed in the ring,” va dir Vargas. “I was trying finish him with the hook. His head movement threw me off and kept him in the fight. We have to keep improving and look better in the next fight.”
Després 10 rondes, Vargas earned a unanimous decision by the score of 100-89 three times in his first fight a 13 mesos as he seeks another title in the welterweight division.

The co-main event saw once-beaten welterweight Jamal James (22-1, 10 KOs) earn a third-round knockout over veteran contender Diego Chaves (26-3-1, 22 KOs) with a sensational left hook to the body that gave James the most impressive victory of his career to date.
James used his jab and significant height advantage from the outset in an attempt to set up combinations, while Chaves looked to attack the body and close the distance. Both fighters traded attacks early, but it was James who broke through first with a barrage in the third round.
After stunning Chaves with a right hand, James went on the attack as his opponent stopped throwing punches. He took full advantage of the opportunity by perfectly placing the left hook to the body that sent Chaves down and eventually counted out by referee Tom Taylor.
In an action-packed super lightweight showdown, John Molina Jr.. (30-7, 24 KOs) delivered a fourth round stoppage of Ivan Redkach (20-3-1, 16 KOs) after both men hit the canvas in the first three rounds.

Redkach was able to survive the round, but Molina connected again in round four with a right hand that stunned Redkach and a clubbing left hook that put him down again. This knockdown prompted referee Eddie Hernandez to wave off the bout 1:27 a la quarta ronda, giving Molina a big victory with his family watching ringside.
“You always dig deep with your family watching,” va dir Molina. “You never want to lose in front of your family. I’m always going to fight until the very end. I had a tough opponent in front of me but I did what I had to to get the victory.”

Vargas (27-2, 10 KOs) is returning to the ring for the first time a 13 mesosafter dropping a 12-round decision in a welterweight title defense against Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 5, 2016. El jugador de 28 anys d'edat, Vargas, who was born in Los Angeles and now lives in Las Vegas, won the welterweight title with a technical knockout victory over Sadam Ali on March 5, 2016. His only other loss came against former welterweight champion Timothy Bradley and he owns victories over the likes of Antonio DeMarco, Josesito López, Aron Martinez and Wale Omotoso.
“Every fighter is dangerous and if I give Herrera the chance, he’ll knock my head off,” va dir Vargas. “But I come into every fight with bad intentions and I’m in a position where I know exactly what it takes to get where I want to go. I have a lot of opportunities ahead of me, but first, I have to show the fans that I’m back and look exciting while doing that. Herrera is going to give me his best, but I feel that I have the speed, the experience and the game plan to overcome anything he brings to the table.”
Herrera (33-7-1, 22 KOs) has already fought four times in 2017 including his most recent outing, a stoppage of Israel Toala in July. The 28-year-old from Merida, Yucatan, Mexico lost to Brandon Rios via knockout on Juny 11 in a FS1 and FOX Deportes main event at Pioneer Events Center, where he will face Vargas.
“I’m going against a really good fighter, but he doesn’t punch very hard,” dit Herrera. “I will go bombs away from the first round. He can’t hurt me. I’m confident I will win this fight. Chaves represents a major challenge for James in his attempt to climb the welterweight ladder as he looks to add another name to his list of victories that includes Wale Omotoso, Javier Molina and Juan Carlo Abreu.
REDK (20-3-1, 16 KOs) and Molina (29-7, 23 KOs) are both coming off losses and will look to go through each other to regain top contender status. The 31-year-old Redkach, who was born in Ukraine and now lives in Los Angeles, is coming off a split decision loss in a FS1 and FOX Deportes main event to Argenis Mendez in his last fight on Maig 2. Molina, 34, had one of the best performance of his career in June 2016 when he defeated Ruslan Provodnikov by unanimous decision. The Covina, Califòrnia. native earned a shot at Terrence Crawford in December that saw him lose by TKO in the eighth round.

Red-Hot Super Middleweight Contender David Benavidez Does Admirable Job Behind Fox Sports 1 Mic for Brandon Rios’ Comeback Victory Last Sunday

Fènix, Arizona-based super middleweight phenom David “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez spent some time behind the microphone last Sunday, while waiting eagerly for his potentially record-breaking world championship challenge.
Undefeated Benavidez (18-0, 17 KOs) did an admirable job serving as a Fox Sports 1 guest commentator for former champion Brand Rios’ exciting comeback victory over Aaron Herrera at the Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster, Califòrnia.
Benavidez is coming off a star-making eight-punch combination KO 8 of fellow contender “Porky” Medina at the Laredo Energy Arena in Laredo, Texas.
The 20-year-old now waits for word on who he will face for the WBC Championship in his try to become the youngest super middleweight world champion in boxing history. (Juny 12, 2017) – L'ex campió del món Brandon Rius (34-3-1, 24 KOs) va tornar al ring amb un nocaut tècnic de Mèxic a la setena ronda Aaron Herrera (23-7-1, 14 KOs) en l'esdeveniment principal de Lliga de Campions de Boxa a FS1 i FOX Esports Diumengenit des de The Pioneer Event Center a Lancaster, Califòrnia.
“He tingut aquesta bona sensació de nervis aquesta nit, com abans del meu debut professional,” va dir Rius. “Estava una mica nerviosa, però allà em sentia bé.”
En el seu primer combat a 19 mesos, Rios va mostrar el seu estil emocionant i característic en trencar el mateix partit d'Herrera abans de detenir-lo al final del seu concurs de pes welter.. Rios va controlar l'acció des del primer moment mentre va mostrar el seu fort joc interior mentre etiquetava Herrera amb ganxos i uppercuts..
Herrera va rebre una bona part de càstig durant les primeres rondes, però es va mantenir competitiu en llançar constantment contra els agressius Rios., que va poder parar alguns dels tirs d'Herrera amb un moviment efectiu del cap. Herrera va fer la seva millor ronda a la quarta quan va canviar les marees momentàniament en ser més actiu que Rios..
“Sempre estic preparat per a qui em posen al davant,” va dir Rius. “Era dur i es balancejava fort. Vaig haver d'anar amb compte i no hi podia entrar boig. De vegades m'agafava, però això forma part de l'esport.”
El canvi no va durar gaire, ja que Rios va augmentar la pressió i va començar a frenar Herrera amb un major treball corporal.. Herrera va continuar lluitant, però va estar clarament cansat al final de la sisena ronda, quan Rios va jugar contra ell contra les cordes amb grans cops de puny..
“La propera vegada que hi entri estaré millor,” va dir Rius. “Veureu més progrés cada vegada que surti. Encara tinc el mateix estil, però hi afegeixo més atletisme i moviment del cap. Vaig sentir que m'havia anat bé allà dins.”
L'atac va continuar a la setena ronda, mentre Rios va perseguir Herrera cap a les cordes abans de lliurar finalment el ganxo dret al cos que va posar Herrera a l'estora.. Herrera no va poder superar el recompte i Rios va tornar a la columna de victòries amb una victòria de parada2:11 a la ronda.
“Aquest és un nou començament i un nou capítol del llibre que estic escrivint,” va dir Rius. “Estem preparats per avançar des d'aquí. Estic preparat per al proper repte.”
L'esdeveniment co-principal de la transmissió televisiva va ser invicte Mario Barris (19-0, 11 KOs) anotar un nocaut sensacional José Luis Rodríguez (23-9-1, 13 KOs) amb ganxo esquerre al cos que va acabar la seva batalla súper lleugera a la setena ronda.
“Sabia que anava a lluitar tot el temps,” said Barris. “Ell es quedaria entrant i vaig haver de mantenir la distància. El vaig sorprendre amb una mà i després el vaig trobar al fetge.”
Barrios va ser impressionant des del principi, utilitzant la seva longitud per eliminar el seu oponent amb potents uppercuts en els primers minuts del combat. “I’m just ready to get back to the top. I know that I have to climb the ladder and that’s what I’m here for.
“When I said that I was done, I was done. Eventually though I started getting that urge again, to get on that stage and perform on TV. My wife told me that if I wanted to fight again, I had to come back dedicated.
“It’s really cool to be fighting right after the Mexico vs. USA match. I’m a Mexican-American but I live in the United States so it’ll be USA vs. Mexico in the ring as well when I face Herrera.
“I know that I have a very skilled, tough opponent. He’s working with Juan Manuel Marquez and he’s very experienced. He’s faced some really tough opponents. It’s going to be a good fight to get back in the ring with.
“I felt like I needed a new voice in my corner. There’s nothing against (former trainer) Robert García, I respect him and he got me to where I am today, but I felt like I got too used to that situation.
“I told (Rius’ entrenador) Ricky Funez that I wanted to come back and have him train me and thankfully he was excited to work with me. We started working really hard and we took some time to get to know each other more and more.
“I Googled ‘Southern California boxing trainers’ and Ten Goose Boxing and Ricky came up, and I decided to hit him up. So I direct messaged him on Instagram and the rest is history.
“I feel like I’m in really good shape after working with a nutritionist for the first time. My nutritionist is with me 12 hours a day and it’s had me feeling great heading into this fight.
“I’ve always been a brawler, but I’m capable of boxing, especially with my inside game. The way I can deflect punches is a strength.
“I’m just ready to get back to the top. I know that I have to climb the ladder and that’s what I’m here for.”

“Training Brandon was a good challenge for me but he has been disciplined from the very start. I laid it all out for him from the beginning, I just wanted a good response from him and he said he’s going to work hard.
“A lot of people said that he was done, and that motivated me. I’ve seen Joe Goossen bring fighters back like Diego Corrales and he’s my mentor in this sport. I’m working hard to push Brandon and get him to that level.
“Brandon is a stubborn fighter but he really does listen. He has a lot of tools and I think you’ll see that he hasn’t lost anything in that ring diumenge.”

Després d'una carrera amateur estel·lar, Rius, an all-action brawler, went unbeaten in his first 27 pro fights before he stopped Miguel Acosta in 2011 to win a lightweight world title. The 31-year-old added victories over Richar Abril, Urbano Antillon and John Murray before winning two out of three fights in a trilogy against Mike Alvarado. L’Oxnard, California-native has challenged top welterweights Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley and will look to work his way towards another world title show in the 147-pound division.
Fighting out of Yucatan, Mèxic, Herrera enters this fight on a three-bout knockout streak since October 2016. The 28-year-old was unbeaten in his first 24 pro fights including 16 knockouts before challenging for a regional title in 2013. He fights in the U.S. per quarta vegada en Juny 11 when he takes on Rios.
A tall fighter for his division at more than six feet, the 21-year-old Barrios picked up seven victories in a jam-packed 2015 in which he stopped five opponents inside the distance and followed it up in 2016 amb tres victòries més, including a 12-round decision over Devis Boschiero in July. The San Antonio native began his 2017 campaign with a stoppage victory over Yardley Suarez on the Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia undercard in Brooklyn in March. The 30-year-old Rodriguez enters this fight on a three bout winning streak including a third round TKO win in April in his last bout. Fighting out of Nuevo Leon, Mèxic, Rodriguez will make his U.S. debutar a Juny 11 having won seven of his last eight contests with his only defeat coming via a 10-round decision against unbeaten Felix Verdejo last April.
Amb tan sols 19 anys d'edat, Borrego has burst onto the scene displaying big knockout power as he made his U.S. debut in February with a first round stoppage and followed it by stopping John Delperdang in the seventh-round of a televised contest this April. Fighting out of Aguascalientes, Mèxic, Borrego will fight in California for the first time since turning pro in 2015.
Born in Lancaster, California and fighting out of Los Angeles, Watts turned pro in 2013 and picked up victories over previously unbeaten Maximilliano Becerra plus once-beaten fighters Michal Chudecki and Manuel Damairias Lopez before suffering his first loss last September to unbeaten prospect Eddie Ramirez. The 25-year-old who has fought professionally since 2013 will look to get back in the win column in his hometown on Juny 11.
