Baltimore Boxing to honor late Scott Wagner March 22

Baltimore, MD (March 12, 2018) – Jake Smith’s Baltimore Boxing Promotions returns to Michael’s Eighth Avenue March 22 for a special tribute event to the late Scott Wagner.
Prior to Smith hosting his cards at Michael’s Eighth, Scott Wagner’s Ballroom Boxing ran more than 70 successful shows over a 15 year period. His series was a major hit and he featured many fighters that went onto become world champions such as Terence Crawford, Hasim Rahman, Kermit Cintron, Orlin Norris and Al Cole. A longtime friend of Smith, Wagner stopped promoting in 2009 and graciously offered the family-owned Michael’s Eighth to Baltimore Boxing Promotions.
On February 16, Wagner passed away at age 49.
“Scott was one of my closest friends and I was devastated by his untimely passing,” said Smith, who co-promoted with Wagner and also fought for him in 1996. “He ran one of the most successful promotions for more than a decade and did right by the fighters.
Scott Wagner the person was even better than the promoter. He always helped other people and his experience assisted me in expanding Baltimore Boxing Promotions. I am forever thankful and will always have a place in my heart for Scott Wagner.”
Headlining this Olympic style boxing event is a grudge match between Deshawn “Soulsnatcher” Chase and Ocean City, MD’s Omar Serrano for the East Coast Middleweight title. One of Baltimore Boxing’s top prospects, Chase looks for redemption against the only man to defeat him.
In the co-featured bout of the evening, Baltimore Boxing’s Tyrell Boyd meets Tyler Langer. Boyd is a multi-time champion but is faced with a tough foe that fights out of the highly respected Mack Lewis Gym.
Other bouts will be announced shortly.
Along with honoring Wagner, Baltimore Boxing is hosting a fundraiser for Brenda Davis. The wife of legendary trainer Adrian Davis, Brenda’s battled health complications that have severely impacted her. All proceeds from the fundraiser will help cover Davis’ healthcare costs.

In association with this exciting evening of action, Baltimore Boxing is teaming up with Baltimore-based nonprofit Unified Efforts. Founded by former Baltimore detective Debbie Ramsey four years ago, Unified Efforts is a full-service bullying prevention organization. On the 16th, Unified Efforts will speak to the crowd about anti bullying, pass out pamphlets and run a special 50/50 raffle. Their mascot, “Humble the Bee”, will also be on hand to promote the cause.
“Unified Efforts is looking forward to another great event with Baltimore Boxing,” said Ramsey. “We’re going to continue to bring awareness about bullying prevention and alternatives to violence for Baltimore’s youth. Baltimore Boxing is a leader in organized youth athletic programs that showcases how proper training, discipline and a focus on respect for others will help young men and women reach their fullest potential academically and socially. Together, we can end bullying!”
In the main event of the evening, rising prospect Stefon “Showtime” McCray of the Baltimore Boxing Gym faces 2016 Golden Gloves titlist TJ Mottinger. A standout basketball player in high school and college, McCray is already making a name for himself inside the squared circle. Mottinger, the current East Coast Champion, looks to avenge a prior loss to McCray.
The McCray-Mottinger bout is for the Maryland State Heavyweight Title and East Coast Championship.
Baltimore Boxing’s Clayton Frazier meets Elvis Banegas in a rematch. Frazier is one of the biggest ticket sellers in the area and brings a great crowd every time he fights but Banegas has plans to silence his loyal followers.
Tyrell Boyd, Justin “Psycho” Sykes, Ashton “The Goon” Sykes, Destiny Day Owens, Allen “The Hampden Hammer” Burris and young phenom Tommy Coe Jr. will all appear in separate bouts against opponents to be named.
“The 16th is guaranteed to bring excitement,” said Jake Smith. “We’ve got two highly anticipated rematches and many other quality fighters on the card. Tyrell Boyd is one of this area’s best kept secrets and Tommy Coe Jr. is one of the best young fighters around. It’s also great to be working with Deborah and Unified Efforts. They’re a great organization and it’s my pleasure to assist however I can with anti-bullying. Kids in schools across the country are being bullied and it needs to stop immediately. Straight Rights and Straight A’s: The Joey Veazey Story

Baltimore, MD (May 3, 2016) – In the movie Coach Carter, Samuel L. Jackson famously quipped to his team of academically struggling players “you are student athletes, student comes first.”
Unfortunately, some standout athletes believe their talents supersede performing in the classroom. This has led to high schools and colleges warning or suspending players if their grades didn’t improve.
On the contrary, there are those who take great pride in starring as an athlete and student; such as 17-year-old Joey Veazey.
Known by his moniker of “Bazooka Joe” Veazey is multi-time amateur champion and was ranked internationally. On Thursdayevening, Veazey fights Chris Perkins for the East Coast junior middleweight championship at Michael’s Eighth Ave in Glen Burnie, MD as a featured fighter on a card promoted by Baltimore Boxing.
The card serves as a tribute to Murray “Bushwacker” Smith Sr., father of Baltimore Boxing’s Jake Smith. Slated to compete in his 100th match, Veazy is a big ticket seller in the Baltimore area and regularly draws large crowds when he enters the squared circle. To Veazey however, he is most proud of his accomplishments outside of the ring, where he’s an honor student finishing up his senior year at Northeast High School.
In August, Veazey will enroll in college locally and major in either mechanical engineering or computer science. At the same time, he’ll prepare for his professional debut while still working as a trainer at the Baltimore Boxing Club. Most see being a fighter or student as a full time responsibility, but Veazey believes his work ethic and focus will help him continue to excel in and out of the ring.
“You have to be disciplined in the ring and classroom,” said Veazey. “I know there’s a lot on my plate but I thrive on excelling as a boxer, student and a trainer at the Baltimore Boxing Club. Focusing and paying attention to the task at hand helps keep me dialed in with whatever it is I’m doing at that time. Ultimately, my goal is to continue excelling with my academics and win a world title. I believe both are reachable and can become a reality with continued hard work.”
Smith, who has literally watched Veazey grow as a person and fighter during the last decade, has trained hundreds of fighters and considers Bazooka Joe one of his most special.
“Joey could’ve told himself boxing will be his everything because of how successful he’s been but he’s extremely humble and intelligent far beyond his years,” said Smith. “He literally goes from one task to another and excels at each of them. Whether he’s a world champion boxer, engineer, computer scientist or all of the above, Joey Veazey epitomizes what it means to be a well-rounded person and I’m very proud of him.”
In the co-feature, Upton Boxing’s Tyrell Boyd and 2016 Golden Gloves champion Aston Sykes will do battle for the Maryland State Middleweight title. Boyd is a former East Coast Middleweight titlist and looks for his second belt while Sykes is riding a wave of confidence having won the Golden Gloves in one of America’s toughest regions.
Popular Clayton Frazier faces Elvin Rodriguez in a battle between boxers from the Baltimore Boxing Gym. Frazier, who has only two fights, is a crowd favorite and hopes to claim local bragging rights in what Smith calls the “Battle of Baltimore Boxing.”
Former basketball star Stefon “Showtime” McRay and future pro standout Donald Wallace will also appear on the card in separae bouts.

The card will serve as a tribute to Murray “Bushwacker” Smith Sr., the father of Baltimore Boxing’s Jake Smith. Smith Sr., a well-known figure in the Baltimore area for decades, was a longtime event promoter who lost his battle with Melanoma in 2013.
Tickets purchased in advance start at $25, reserved seats are $35, reserved tables for ten are $350, $50 VIP seats and $500 VIP tables of 10 can be purchased by calling 410-375-9175. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the fights begin at 8.
Topping the card will be a showdown between local star Joey “Bazooka Joe” Veazey and Andre Harris of Pasadena, MD. Fighting out of the Baltimore Boxing Club, Veazy won numerous titles since his earliest days in the sport and is one of the top prospects in the talent-rich DC-Maryland-Virginia area. A big ticket seller, a legion of “Bazooka Joe” supporters come out every time he fights.
Veazy and Harris meet for the East Coast 154 pound championship in what will be Veazy’s final amateur bout.
Tyrell Boyd of the Upton Boxing Club meets Genc Pllana for the East Coast middleweight title. Boyd is a former champion and looks to recapture the crown while Pllana is fresh off an upset win over well regarded Donald Wallace.
Popular Clayton Frazier and former Stevenson University basketball standout Stefon McCray are slated to appear on the card against opponents to be announced. Additional bouts will be added shortly.
“Joey’s been representing the Baltimore Boxing Club and training there for a while now,” said Smith, who is also the owner and head trainer at Baltimore Boxing Gym. “We’ve had great success during his amateur career but I’m looking forward to turning him pro in the immediate future. On the 5th, fans will not only get to see Veazy fight for a title in his last amateur match but also a middleweight championship fight between Tyrell Boy and Genc Pllana. Pllana surprised all of us by beating Donald Wallace last time out and Boyd wants his title back. We’ve also got Clayton Frazier and Stefon McCray competing plus additional fan friendly bouts to be added.”

Baltimore Boxing Promotions to host “Super Brawl of Boxing” January 28!

Baltimore, MD (January 7, 2016) – Baltimore Boxing Promotions returns to Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD Thursday, January 28 for an evening of Olympic-style championship boxing.

Dubbed as the “Super Brawl of Boxing”, tickets are $25 for general admission, $35 for reserved seating ($350 for tables of 10) and $50 for VIP ($500 for a table of 10). Tickets to this first annual event are on sale now by calling 410-375-9175 or logging onto Baltimoreboxing.com. Doors open at 6:30 and the first bout is scheduled for 8:15.

In association with this exciting night of fights, Baltimore Boxing will once again team up with the Colon Cancer Alliance and has already donated tickets to the organization. On fight night, the Colon Cancer Alliance and Baltimore Boxing will raise awareness for the cause by handing out pamphlets and speaking to the crowd.

One of the deadliest forms of cancer, the Colon Cancer Alliance‘s mission it to knock colon cancer out by championing prevention, funding cutting-edge research and providing quality patient support service. The Colon Cancer Alliance is a proud member of the National Health Council’s Standards of Excellence Certification Program.

Headlining the card is a 168 pound Super Brawl title bout between Donald Wallace of the Baltimore Boxing Gym and Upton Boxing’s Tyrell Boyd. A participant at the 2015 Olympic Trials, Wallace surprised many during the tournament before losing a controversial decision to highly touted Sharif Rahman. A champion in his own right, Boyd captured the 2014 Washington, DC Golden Gloves. The Wallace-Boyd winner can also claim Charm City bragging rights.

Baltimore Boxing Gym rising star Joey “Bazooka Joe” Veazy meets Club One Boxing’s Andre Harris for the Super Brawl junior middleweight championship. Recognized as a boxing prodigy since his earliest days as a pugilist, Veazy won numerous tournaments throughout his career and was rated internationally.

Heavyweight knockout artist Brian “Bam Bam” Haneschlager of the Baltimore Boxing Gym meets Dallas Butts for the heavyweight title. Haneschlager, who has a large and vocal fan base, is an action-packed fighter that thrives on entertaining fans.

Baltimore Boxing’s Stefon McCray meets Main Street Gym’s TJ Mottinger in a cruiserweight title matchup. A standout basketball player at Stevenson University, the 6’6 McCray’s natural athletic abilities and length have helped him transition smoothly from the hardwood to the squared circle.

“I’m excited for our first annual Super Brawl of Boxing Championships,” said Smith. “We have four exciting title match ups featuring some of our most popular fighters. It’s also our pleasure to assist the Colon Cancer Alliance with their efforts to raise awareness.
