NEW YORK (June 17, 2015) – Veteran cut-man “Big” George Mitchell and junior middleweight prospect Patrick Day (10-1-1, 6 KOs) are scheduled guest speakers at tomorrow night’s (Thursday, June 18) Ring 8 monthly meeting at Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square, New York.

 

The evening kicks-off at 7 p.m. ET with a hot-and-cold buffet, followed an hour later with the start of the Ring 8 meeting.

 

The 6’7″, 285-pound Mitchell has been a fixture at New York fights for decades, working the corners of champions, contenders, prospects and journeymen alike. He is a protégé of the late, great Al Gavin, considered by many as one of the greatest cut-men in boxing history.

 

As an amateur boxer, Day was the ranked No. 1 American in the 152-pound decision. Fighting out of Freeport (NY), he is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, managed and trained by Joe Higgins.

 

Day is stepping in for Higgins, who is unable to attend due to an amateur boxing engagement, as one of the Ring 8 June speakers. Higgins is coming off a win with another Ring 8 favorite he also handles, undefeated, world-rated light heavyweight contender Sean Monaghan (25-0, 16 KOs), of Long Beach (NY).

BROOKLYN (June 17, 2015) – Middleweight World Champion Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs (29-1, 26 KOs) returns to the ring in his hometown of Brooklyn to take on former world champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (28-3-2, 9 KOs) as the televised opener of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN primetime Saturday, Aug. 1 at Barclays Center with televised coverage beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

 

This fight will precede the showdown between undefeated superstar Danny “Swift” Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) and Brooklyn’s own Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs).

 

“I’m just excited to be on this great card and to be able to perform at Barclays Center is an honor,” said Jacobs. “I’m looking forward to making the best out of this opportunity and most importantly I want to give the Brooklyn fans a great show. I get to go to work in my own backyard.”

The inspirational figure who will fight at Barclays Center for the fourth time, Brooklyn’s Jacobs completed his road from cancer survivor to champion last August when he defeated Jarrod Fletcher for the middleweight title. In 2011, while pursuing a championship in the ring, cancer threatened his life and kept him on the sidelines for 19 months. When he returned, he picked up where he left off and hasn’t lost since. The 28-year-old looks to keep his momentum going when he faces Mora onAug. 1.

 

The winner of NBC’s “The Contender” series, the 34-year-old Mora is a former world champion at super welterweight and looking to add a middleweight crown to his name. The Los Angeles native owns victories over Ishe Smith, Peter Manfredo Jr. and Vernon Forrest and enters this fight on a five-fight win streak. He most recently defeated Abraham Han in February of this year and will make his first pro start in Brooklyn on Aug. 1.

 

In addition to the evening’s main event and co-main event, select undercard bouts will be carried live on ESPN3. ESPN Deportes will also televise the fight live as part of its Noche de Combates series and ESPN International will present live coverage across its networks in Latin America, Brazil, the Caribbean and Pacific Rim. All our bouts are sanctioned by USABoxingMetro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.

 

The weigh-in for the shows will begin at 4:00PM and the first bout will begin at 6:00PM.

 

The ticket price is $20 per person. Children 6 and under are not charged. All gym members and registered amateurs with their books in hand pay $15 per person.

BROOKLYN (June 15, 2015) – Undefeated superstar Danny “Swift” Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) will take on Brooklyn’s own Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) at Barclays Center as Premier Boxing Champions will be live in primetime on ESPN on Saturday, August 1 with coverage beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Now in his fourth year as a world champion, Philadelphia’s Garcia will return to headline at Barclays Center for a record fifth time. Garcia last fought in Brooklyn on April 11 defeating Lamont Peterson in a rousing 12 round majority decision. The 27-year-old has taken down some of the biggest names in boxing on his way to an undefeated record, including Amir Khan, Erik Morales, Lucas Matthysse and Zab Judah.

 

A former world champion at 140 and 147-pounds, the 34-year-old Malignaggi will return to the ring to fight at Barclays Center for the fourth time as a professional. He has faced a slew of big names throughout his career and has taken home victories over the likes of Zab Judah, Vyacheslav Senchenko and Pablo Cesar Cano. Born and raised in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, “The Magic Man” will step into the ring for the first time since April 2014.

The first live Premier Boxing Champions on Primetime ESPN (PBC on ESPN) telecast, from the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., will feature a star-studded 12-round welterweight matchup between undefeated Keith “One Time” Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) and Luis Collazo (36-6, 19 KOs) when the series debuts on ESPN on Saturday, July 11, at 9 p.m. The opening fight will showcase a 10-round junior middleweight matchup between undefeated Tony Harrison (21-0, 18 KOs) and Willie Nelson (23-2-1, 13 KOs). BROOKLYN (May 30, 2015) – Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Spikereturned to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Friday night with another explosive night of bouts for fight fans. In the main event, Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) scored a crafty and hard fought unanimous decision over Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) and Javier Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 KOs) won a crowd-pleasing unanimous decision victory over Bryan Vasquez (34-2, 18 KOs) in the televised opener.

 

Below are comments made by the televised fighters after their performances tonight:

 

AMIR KHAN

 

“I thought I worked well inside. I’ve never done a lot of work in the pocket like that and I plan to do more of that in the future.

 

“I give Chris a lot of credit. He came forward a lot more than we thought he would and he had a big chin tonight.

 

“Chris gave it his all tonight. This is the best Algieri we’ve seen in a long time, and if he’d have fought Manny (Pacquiao) that way he might have won.

 

“Everyone knows I want Floyd (Mayweather) next after all the talk about it, but when you wait and hope for something for this long it can set you back. I don’t want to overlook any other fighters, including Chris.

 

“My first show with PBC has been great. The New York crowd was awesome and really got into it. The promotion was excellent and I’m proud to be a part of this team.”

 

CHRIS ALGIERI

 

“I thought I pressured Khan well and got my touches. He definitely didn’t like it when I got into his body.

 

“I thought I hurt him several times, but Khan’s a cagey fighter and he spins off. I guess the judges liked that tonight. I would think the cleaner, harder shots would get a little more respect.

 

“I think PBC is fantastic. The focus is on the fighters, not the politics or the promoters. This is helping bring the sport back to boxing’s glory days of primetime events for the fans.

 

“I haven’t thought much about after this fight. I’m disappointed, but I’ll watch the film from this fight and we’ll go from there.”

 

JAVIER FORTUNA

 

“I’m very surprised that the fight went the distance. Vasquez is a strong fighter. After the fifth round, I was boxing to score points.

 

“I was never really hurt by Vasquez, but I hurt my own hand on his head.

 

“Vasquez didn’t really affect me throughout the fight. The swelling on my eye is from a headbutt.

 

“The biggest key to my success tonight was my training. Before this I didn’t have the stamina that I needed. However, after my work with Hector Bermudez leading up to this fight I was more than ready.

 

“Becoming a champion here in New York is huge for me. I’m very proud of my performance tonight.”

 

BRYAN VASQUEZ

 

“My style is to box and then move. Fortuna fought a smart fight tonight. He wouldn’t engage me and fight.

 

“Fortuna used his head and elbows a lot tonight, but I don’t want to use that as an excuse. I tried telling the referee, but nothing was done.

 

“I worked very hard for three months of training to get to this fight. I hope I won over some fans today because I fight to please them.

 

“Hopefully I get a rematch because this is not the end of my career, and I’d love the chance to take that belt from Fortuna.

 

“I want to thank PBC for this opportunity. It was great being a part of this show and I hope they’ll think of me again in the future.”

BROOKLYN (May 28, 2015) – On Thursday night, June 4, Dmitry Salita’s Star of David Promotions will bring it’s Brooklyn Brawl series to LIU Brooklyn Paramount Theater with a terrific night of boxing.
In the main event, undefeated Heavyweight Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller (12-0-1, 10 KO’s) will risk his undefeated mark when he takes on Damon McCreary (15-4, 11 KO’s) in a bout scheduled for 8 rounds.
McCreary has been training hard in Detroit as Miller will be his 4th consecutive and 7th overall undefeated opponent.
He has previously been in with current WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder as well as Jordan Shimmell, Ali Mansour and Charles Martin.
“My training has been excellent.  I feel great.  I know what I have going against me,” said McCreary.
In Miller, McCreary will be facing a guy who stands about 6’4″ and checks in around 260 lbs.  McCreary has been preparing for that with regular sparring against huge men.
“I know he is a big guy.  I been sparring with guys who stand about 6’8″ and 6’9″.  I know Miller is young, hungry and a puncher.  His skills are OK but he hasn’t fought at the level I have been at.”
McCreary has been a pro since 1998 and he feels that could be a big factor in his favor.
“My experience is a huge factor.  I know up until the last couple years that he has been an MMA fighter.  I just hope he doesn’t kick me or put me in a headlock.” quipped McCreary.
Despite being 41 years-old, McCreary is confident that a win in New York will catapult him into some great opportunities.
“I have a few years left in me.  This win will get me a bigger fight.  It is great to fight in New York.  I have fought in Los Angeles and Chicago but I have to treat this as just another fight.”
Because of the his past opponents, McCreary is giving himself a great shot to pull the upset.
“I am from Detroit.  I am a soldier who won’t back down and I am coming to win.  By the grace of god, I can pull the upset and further my career.”
In the 8-round co-feature, Dimash Niyazov (7-0-3, 4 KO’s) of Staten Island, NY takes on Ariel Duran (8-7-1, 5 KO’s) of Queens, NY in a Jr. Welterweight bout.
In 6-round bouts:
Steven Martinez (15-2, 12 KO’s) of Bronx, NY will take on an opponent to be named in a Super Welterweight bout.
Akil Auguste (6-1, 5 KO’s) of Brooklyn, NY will fight Quincy Brown (1-2, 1 KO) of Millbrook, AL in a Middleweight bout.
In 4-round bouts:
Steve Geffrard (10-2, 7 KO’s) of Miami, FL will battle Eric George (3-9) of Niagara Falls, NY in a Cruiserweight bout.
Bakhtiyar Eyubov (5-0, 5 KO’s) of Almaty, Kazakhstan will take on Jason Thompson (5-9-4, 4 KO’s) of New York in a Super Welterweight bout.

 

Dewayne Zeigler (4-0-1, 4 KO’s) of Montgomery, AL will fight Jeremy Graves (0-4) of Niagara Falls, NY in a Lightweight bout.

Julian Sosa (1-0) of Brooklyn, NY will take on an opponent to be named in a Welterweight bout.
Super Bantamweight Michael Stoute of Long Island, NY will make his pro debut against an opponent to be named.

PEC was launched in April by Barclays Center developer Bruce Ratner and Onexim Sports and Entertainment, with all business operations overseen by Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark. PEC and LIU Brooklyn announced recently that LIU Brooklyn Paramount Theatre, located at Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues on the LIU Brooklyn campus, will focus on booking emerging talent. AMIR KHAN

 

“Algieri is a fighter that has a lot of skills and assets. His range and height give him good advantages against opponents but I believe with my speed, movement and style it will be too much for him.

 

“Each day me and Virgil Hunter are getting stronger and we have built a really good rapport. It takes time to get that but he understands my style even more now and what works for me so we’re only going to keep growing.

 

“My aim since I was a kid and got into this sport was to be the very best. I fulfilled a dream when I got to the Olympics at 17 and brought back a silver medal. Later I became a world champion and then unified the light-welterweight division. My goal now is to fight the very best at 147 pounds and make my mark on this division too.

 

“I was away in training camp when my daughter turned one last week. It’s hard to be away from her but as a fighter those are the sacrifices you have to make. Everything I do is for her and I can’t wait to see her and spend time with her after this fight. Her birthday celebrations have been put on hold until after the fight!

 

“I’m really looking forward to returning to New York and fighting at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. I have good memories of this city because it’s the place where I had my first fight on US soil against Paulie Malignaggi in 2010 and also where I got married. I’m out to make it another good time this weekend.”

 

 

CHRIS ALGIERI

 

“I know that it gets said all the time, but this was truly the best and most intense training camp of my life. Working with John David Jackson has truly been a blessing. He has brought out the best Chris Algieri there is. You are going to see a whole new fighter come Friday night.

TUREANO JOHNSON PROVIDING GREAT SPARRING FOR DANIEL GEALE

NEW JERSEY (May 26, 2015) – Gary Shaw Productions middleweight contender, Tureano Johnson (18-1, 13 KOs), is now the chief sparring partner for Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) as he prepares him for his upcoming WBC title clash with Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs).  Johnson, who captured the WBA International and WBC Silver middleweight titles in his last bout, is currently ranked WBC #2, WBA #5, IBF #8 and WBO #13.  He gives his thought on sparring with Geale.

 

“Daniel Geale is a special fighter who possesses a lot of boxing skills,” said Tuerano Johnson. “He’s looking real sharp in the gym and his power is there.  I can feel the snap on his punches and I think Miguel Cotto is in for a big surprise.  Everyone is counting Geale out but not me.  Gary Shaw brought me in to test Geale’s skills and after a few days of sparring, I believe Daniel will be crowned champion.”

 

“I brought Tureano to the gym to spar with Geale because he’s a good look to emulate Cotto and he’s one of the top fighters in the middleweight division,” Gary Shaw said. “The feedback I got from Johnson about sparring Geale is very positive.  I’m confident that Daniel will use everything in his playbook to come out victorious.”

 

Tureano Johnson is currently riding a 4-fight winning streak, three of which came by stoppage.  Highly ranked across the board of all sanctioning organizations, Johnson is on the cusp of landing a big fight.
