29th annual Ring 8 Holiday Event & Awards Ceremony Dec. 13 in New York

NEW YORK, NY (October 5, 2015) – The 29th annual Ring 8 Holiday Event and Awards Ceremony will be held Sundayafternoon (12:30-5:30 p.m. ET), December 13 at Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, New York.
David Diamante will once again serve as the event’s Master of Ceremonies. He will also be honored as Ring Announcer of the Year.
Ring 8 has announced its 2015 award winners (see complete list below), including undefeated No. 1 world welterweight contender Sadam “World Kid” Ali (Fighter of the Year), former New York State Athletic Commission chairperson Melvina Lathan (Woman of the Decade), Heather Hardy (Female Fighter of the Year), “Ireland’s” John Duddy (Uncrowned Champion), Andre Rozier (Trainer of the Year) and Joe DeGuardia (Promoter of the Year).
“Our members look forward to this event every year,” Ring 8 president Bob Duffy said. “We have another great group of outstanding award winners. Committed celebrity guests include former world champions Mark Breland, Luis Collazo, Iran Barkley and Vito Antuofermo, as well Sean Monahan,Bobby Cassidy, Harold Lederman and Frankie Galarza. Lathan is one of the most respected officials in the boxing industry. She judged 83 world title fights before becoming NYSAC chairperson in 2008 through this past year. Admired for her innovative thinking and support of boxers’ safety, she became the first female African-American commissioner head in boxing.
Ali (22-0, 13 KOs), fighting out of Brooklyn, is knocking on the door of a world title shot. The talented welterweight is ranked among the top 11 in all four major sanctioning bodies: WBO #1, IBF #3, WBA #8 and WBC #11.
Brooklyn’s 33-year-old Hardy (3 KOs) is the reigning WBC International super bantamweight champion. Another fighter on the verge of a world title shot, she sports a 3-0 record so far this year.
Duddy (29-2, 18 KOs), who lives in Queens, was one of the most colorful and popular fighter in recent New York City boxing history. The powerful middleweight rose to No. 2 in the world and sold-out The Theater at Madison Square Garden on two occasions.
Rozier, who is also the exclusive designer of Havoc brand boxing material, is recognized as one of the best trainers in the business. Some of his present fighters include Ali, world middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs, and Gary Stark Jr., plus 2012 U.S. Olympian and rising light heavyweight star Marcus Browne.
DeGuardia, founder and CEO of Star Boxing, has promoted countless world champions, including Antonio Tarver, and world championship events. His top fighters today includeChris Algieri and Demetrius Andrade.

Tickets include a complete brunch with cocktail hour upon entry, followed by seating at the awards ceremony, dinner and dessert, and top-shelf open bar throughout the afternoon. There will also be a silent auction of boxing memorabilia. This event is expected to sell-out and everybody is urged to purchase tickets as soon as possible in order to secure favorable seating.

LOS ANGELES (September 30, 2015) – Reigning WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) has arrived in Los Angeles to begin training camp at Wild Card Boxing Club with trainer Freddie Roach ahead of his Saturday, Nov. 21showdown against former WBC and WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) which will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View from The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

NEW YORK (September 3, 2015) – Nearly 150 people turned out for last Sunday’s 5th annual Ring 8 Family Picnic at Brady Park in Massapequa Reserve, Nassau on Long Island, New York.
Hamburgers, chicken, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob, macaroni and potato salads were consumed along with a wide variety of beverages and desserts. The most popular children activities included a face painter and magician.

BAYAMÓN, PUERTO RICO (Sept. 1, 2015) – Closing out a five-day, four-city international press tour which had already made stops in Los Angeles, Mexico City and New York City, WBC,Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and former Two-Time Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) hosted a press conference on Friday, Aug. 28 in front of a hometown audience in Cotto’s native Puerto Rico. Hundreds of media members and thousands of screaming fans filled Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez to see Cotto and Canelo and their teams despite the area being hit by Tropical Storm Erika the night before.
The press conference audience was thrilled as the fighters made their entrance to an impressive pyrotechnic display. The excitement in the crowd continued as both fighters faced off and spoke about their upcoming 12-round fight for Cotto’s WBC and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Championships, which takes place Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. In addition, Jose “Chepo” Reynoso, manager and trainer for Canelo Alvarez, serenaded the crowed with an a capella rendition of the favorite Puerto Rican tune “Que Bonito Puerto Rico,” in a show of respect to the fans in the audience.
The press conference stop in Bayamón, Puerto Rico capped a busy week for Teams Cotto and Canelo. By the end of the week, Cotto and Canelo visited four cities in two countries, spanning four time zones, traveling 9,500 miles and encountering thousands of screaming fans in five days. Wherever they went, fans and the media were a buzz about the anticipated showdown between Cotto and Canelo, with many making early predictions that the Nov. 21 middleweight championship will be crowned ‘Fight of the Year.’
Both fighters are now heading off to their respective training camps in Los Angeles at Wild Card Gym for Miguel Cotto and San Diego, Calif. for Canelo Alvarez to prepare for their epic showdown on Nov. 21.

The next mega-fight in the storied Puerto Rico vs. Mexico boxing rivalry will take place Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View. At the New York City press conference held at the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel, Cotto, the first native of Puerto Rico to become world champion in four different weight classes, and Mexican superstar Alvarez were joined by their promoters and trainers to discuss what promises to be this year’s most epic battle.
