Taras Shelestyuk & Ruben Villa Successfully Defend Unbeaten Records on Saturday Night

  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. /ORANGE, Calif. (July 3, 2017) – In the “Locked n’ Loaded” main event, welterweight Taras “Real Deal” Shelestyuk (16-0, 10 KOs) made quick work of Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez (15-3, 11 KOs) by knocking him out in the third round Saturday night from Omega Products International in Sacramento, Calif.

Shelestyuk, who is ranked No. 5 by the WBO, predicted a knockout win in his prefight interview with the Olympic bronze medalist (London 2012) saying he planned to be aggressive from the start.

“I didn’t want this fight going the distance,” said Shelestyuk, who attributes the aggressiveness to new trainer Joel Diaz. “Joel and I worked on increasing our punch output and it showed in this fight.”

Shelestyuk, who is from the Ukraine but now makes his home in Los Angeles, rocked Rodriguez in the first round. He connected on a two-punch combination that sent the Mexican to the canvas. In the third round, Shelestyuk struck early and often, earning the knockout win at the 2:05 mark.

Top featherweight prospect Ruben Villa (7-0, 4 KOs) of Salinas, Calif. delivered a beating to overmatched veteran Jonathan Alcantara (7-16-2, 1 KO) of El Salvador. Villa, who swept all three scorecards (40-36), looked equally comfortable fighting on the outside or in the pocket.

“I think this fight showed how versatile I am,” Villa said. “I boxed him well and mixed it up inside without taking any hits. It was a solid performance.”

Villa, indeed, looked the part of an elite prospect. He was aggressive the entire fight, yet was extremely disciplined on the defensive end.

“There’s no doubt I frustrated him,” Villa continued. “I could tell he was having a hard time. I never let him relax.”

Shelestyuk and Villa are co-promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing.

Taras Shelestyuk Enjoying Working with New Trainer Joel Diaz Ahead of Saturday’s Fight

  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif./Philadelphia, Penn. (June 27, 2017) – Undefeated, world ranked welterweight Taras “The Real Deal” Shelestyuk is banking on his new trainer, the highly regarded Joel Diaz, to take his game to the next level.
“I enjoy working with Joel Diaz,” said Shelstyuk, who brought home a bronze finish in the 2012 London Olympics to his native Ukraine.  “He’s a great communicator. He knows how to bring out the best in boxers.”
Shelestyuk (15-0, 9 KOs), who on Saturday headlines Thompson Boxing’s “Locked n’ Loaded” 8-round main event from Omega Products in Sacramento, Calif., is currently ranked No. 5 by the WBO.
At 31, Shelestyuk can ill afford a slip up on his way up the official rankings. His opponent, Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez (15-2, 11 KOs), is all too eager to play the spoiler on Saturdaynight.
“I know I can’t sleep on Rodriguez,” said Shelestyuk, who is promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing. “I have to make a statement early in the fight to let him know what I’m about.”
Shelestyuk vs. Rodriguez and the entire 8-bout card will be streamed live on TB Presents: Locked n’ Loaded. Watch the action on ThompsonBoxing.com and Facebook Live beginning at 6:30 p.m. PST / 10:30 p.m. EST.

Since teaming up with Diaz several months ago, Shelestyuk, who is a southpaw, has tightened his punching ability and plans to be assertive throughout the 8-round fight.
“I think most people know that I’m more of a boxer than a puncher,” said the Los Angeles-based Shelestyuk.  “You can still have an aggressive style with a technical game plan and that’s what we’re working on. How to be aggressive in a methodical fashion.”
“This is a big fight for Taras.  Should he win on Saturday, we feel he is ready for a major fight.  He is hungry and has the incentive to put on a great performance on Saturday night,” said Banner Promotions President, Artie Pelullo.
In the co-feature, standout amateur Ruben Villa (5-0, 3 KOs) of Salinas, Calif. looks to stay undefeated against Jonathan Alcantara (7-15-2, 1 KO) in a fight set for 6-rounds.

Provodnikov takes out Rodriguez in 4!!

MONTE-CARLO BOXING BONANZA
‘NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS’

‘SIBERIAN ROCKY’ OVERWHELMS GAME RODRIGUEZ

Monte Carlo, Nov 7 – Ruslan Provodnikov (25-4, 18 KO’s) promised to put on a show and he didn’t disappoint as he overwhelmed unbeaten Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez (14-1, 11 KO’s) in four rounds at the glitzy Salle Des Etoiles in Monte Carlo on Saturday night.

With HRH Prince Albert looking on, the former WBO junior-welterweight champion wasn’t unduly stretched as he hit his stride early and pounded away until the finish of their scheduled 10-round welterweight clash. The Russian was the aggressor and although his Mexican opponent had some success counter-punching, he didn’t have the strength to hold off Provodnikov.

Rodriguez was sent reeling in the fourth, taking an eight-count after a succession of hooks to the body. After Rodriguez was decked again soon after, referee Stan Christodoulou wisely called a halt. It was Provodnikov’s first win since his narrow April defeat to Lucas Matthysse.

“I must praise Rodriguez,” said the Russian later. “A lot of big names didn’t want to fight, but he did.”

‘SIBERIAN ROCKY’ PROMISES MORE OF WHAT THE FANS LOVE IN MONTE CARLO DEBUT ON NOV. 7

‘NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS’

Johannesburg, October 27 – Former world champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs) says he will be in great shape for next weekend’s showdown with Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez (13-0, 10 KOs) in Monte Carlo as he was in training for a fight in New York at the same time.

Those plans changed, though, because “six or seven opponents changed their mind about fighting me”. They include Amir Khan and Shawn Porter.

The Russian’s in-your-face style makes him a tough fight for anyone and it’s little surprise that many big names have baulked at the chance to challenge him.

“It’s frustrating, but we will persevere,” he said from his base in Indio, California where he is working with new trainer Joel Diaz, former trainer of Provodnikov rival Timothy Bradley.

Asked what sort of fight Monte Carlo fans can expect next weekend, the Banner Promotions boxer unsurprisingly pointed to his reputation saying he had been in two fights of the year candidates, plus the fight of the year with Bradley in 2013.

“Right now, the goal is to become world champion again. Being in America has made me a better fighter,” said the 31-year-old who grew up admiring Mike Tyson. “If you are a star in the USA then you are a star all over the world. Plus the competition level in the US is at its highest.”

Having grown up in western Siberia, he attributes the emergence of Eastern Bloc fighters like himself, Gennady Golovkin, Artur Beterbiev and so many others to the challenges thrown down by Soviet history.

“There have been some tough times that really made people very hard-working and persistent in whatever they do,” said the man they call the “Siberian Rocky”.

Provodnikov is looking forward to following in the footsteps of Golovkin, who has twice fought in the principality to much acclaim.

“I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. I know Gennady enjoyed it every time. I can’t wait to see how many fans I have over there.”

As ever, the Russian expects to put on a good show. “I’ve seen Rodriguez’s fights. He is a very strong fighter, and unbeaten. This will be a brawl.”

His fans, of course, wouldn’t want it any other way.

Philadelphia / Monte Carlo (October 19, 2015)--On Saturday, November 7th, former WBO junior welterweight world champion, Ruslan “The Siberian Rocky” Provodnikov gets back in the ring when he headlines a special night of boxing when he takes on undefeated Mexican slugger, Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez.

The 10-round welterweight bout will headline the “Night of Champions” tournament event promoted by Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves Promotions and takes place at the Salle Des Etoiles in Monaco

“I am glad that finally I have a specific date and location for the fight! This will be a great experience for me because it’s my first time fighting in Europe, and I heard Monte Carlo has a lot of boxing fans,”said Provodnikov. “I know that next year I will be back in the ring and the networks will finally have an opponent that will fight me and not just say they want to fight me. Hopefully we can make a rematch with Matthysse or a fight with Brandon Rios, which would both be great fights for the fans!”

Said, Rodriguez, “I never thought I was going get a fight against Ruslan. He is one of my favorite boxers to watch so this is a great opportunity for me, and I want to make a splash. I’m training very hard because I want the world to know who I am.”

“Provodnikov is in great shape as he was in training,” said Golden Gloves Rodney Berman, who reached agreement with Art Pelullo of Banner Promotions. “Provodnikov is all-action, a made-for-TV fighter who will add great value. I’m disappointed the Braehmer-Oosthuizen fight has fallen through, but I’ve been around long enough to know that such things are an occupational hazard.”

Said Arthur Pelullo, President of Banner Promotions, “I am excited to see Ruslan back in the ring with his new trainer Joel Diaz. We expect him to thrill the fans in Monte Carlo, much the same way he has all around the world. I want to thank my friend Rodney Berman for the opportunity to fight on this show, and this should be a great main event to a great a card.”

Provodnikov of Beryzovo, Russia has a record of 24-4 with 17 knockouts and is considered the most exciting fighter in the world today.

The fight was one of the most memorable battles as Provodnikov battered the champion throughout the fight. Bradley came back strong and had success in the middle rounds of what turned out to be the 2013 Fight of the Year. Provodnikov dropped Bradley late in round twelve but it was not enough as he came up on the short end of a unanimous decision.

On October 19, 2013, Provodnikov was undeterred as in his very next bout, he won the WBO junior welterweight world championship with a 10th round stoppage over reigning champion Mike Alvarado in the champion’s hometown of Broomfield, Colorado.

Provodnikov lost his belt in a controversial split decision to Chris Algieri.

On November 28, 2014, Provodnikov stopped former world champion Jose Luis Castillo in five rounds in Moscow, Russia.

In Ruslan’s last bout, he lost a 12-round majority decision to Lucas Matthysse in a bout that is a front runner for Fight of the Year. The bout took place on April 18, 2015 in Verona, New York.
