USA Boxing Alumni Association Profile: 1972 Olympic Bronze Medalist JESSE VALDEZ

(L-R) – 奧斯汀鱒魚, 傑西·瓦爾德茲(Jesse Valdez), Raphael Marquez and B.J. 花卉

科羅拉多斯普林斯, 膝部. (十月 5, 2018) — 1972 奧運銅牌得主 傑西·瓦爾德茲(Jesse Valdez), who was an outstanding amateur boxer, never turned pro because he chose security for his family rather than take a risk and parlay his amateur pedigree into a prize fighting career.

Valdez first went to the local BoysClub when he was 11. The youngest of seven children in a low-income family, headed by his single mother, in which the kids all slept in one bedroom, girls in a bed, boys on the floor, sharing space with cockroaches.

I started going to the club and I guess I did well because I started beating older and bigger guys,” Valdez remembered. One day a coach asked me if I was interested in learning how to box. 在 11, USA Boxing people were interested in me, not me the boxer, and they always gave me guidance. Because of my background, I knew I wouldn’t be going to college, and these people helped me and gave me guidance.

在 1964, 16-year-old Valdez upset Olympic bronze medalist Quincey Daniels at the National AAU Championship in the welterweight division, and later that year he qualitied for the U.S. Olympic Team as an alternate. Valdez captured a gold medal at the1967 National Golden Gloves in the light middleweight weight class and he added a bronze medal from the prestigious Pan-American Games.

I wanted to be a better boxer and that (defeating Daniels) also helped me become a better person. I had never traveled outside of Texas before then. I went to the Regionals and Nationals and then I was asked if I wanted to go to East Africa. All I knew about Africa was Tarzan, Jane and Cheetah. In high school, I was offered college scholarships, but my grades were bad because I spent more time out than in school. I didn’t have a father figure.

While he served in the U.S. 空軍, Valdez won a gold medal at the 1970 National AAU Championship as a light middleweight and two years later, he became the 1972 National Golden Gloves welterweight champion. A USA Olympic Team alternate for the second time in 1968, the third time was the charm for Valdez, who qualified for the 1972 中美. Olympic Boxing Team by defeating future world champion 埃迪·穆斯塔法·穆罕默德.

My dream came true in 1964,Valdez noted. “I was a USA Olympic Team alternate in 1964 and again in 1968. But in 1972, I wanted to win a gold medal, even though I ended up with bronze.

Valdez became a household name in America because his Olympic fights in Munich, 德國, aired live on ABC Wide World of Sports, the award-winning Saturday afternoon show during the seventies, when legendary announcer 霍華德·科塞爾 took a shine to Valdez. 不幸, Jessie was eliminated in the semifinals by the eventual gold medalist, Emilio Correa, by way of a controversial decision, and Jesse settled for a bronze medal.

該 1972 奧運會, 然而, is sadly remembered for the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches taken hostage and murdered by a Palestinian terrorist group, Black September.

The Olympic village was built in a circle,” Valdez explained. “There were athletes everywhere from all around the world. My roommate and I had a routine after eating. We walked to digest our food and that night we started to walk, when guards with guns and rifles wouldn’t let anybody go past them. We didn’t know why and didn’t speak German. We then asked our coaches what had happened, and they said people were shot that afternoon. 後, we saw what happened on television.

I was team captain and all the captains from every sport were asked what the athletes wanted to do, continue (competing) or go home. We decided to go on because, if we had stopped, that’s what they (terrorists) wanted. The Olympics were halted one day for a memorial recognizing those who had died.

TEAM USA vs. TEAM GERMANY, 華僑城. 6 & 12 in CHATTANOOGA

Team USA and Team Germany, two of the world’s top amateur boxing programs, will meet in Chattanooga, 田納西, for two separate duels taking place Saturday, 十月 6 和星期五, 十月. 12, at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

The duels will feature some of the top male and female elite boxers as they prepare for the lead up to the Olympics in 2020. The two events will take place alongside this year’s Eastern Elite Qualifier & Regional Open Championships, which is expected to have more than 650 拳擊手, aged 8-40, compete from Oct. 8-13.

After the 1972 奧運會, promoters lined-up to offer Valdez a pro contract, but he quickly turned down all offers having other options as well. He could have remained in the Air Force and been a coach. 代替, he accepted an offer from a Houston television station that wanted to benefit from hiring the Olympic bronze medalist returning home. Valdez became a reporter and the station’s ratings immediately went up, but other reporters became jealous and that became a problem for Jesse. 首先, he contemplated a return to the Air Force, but Valdez liked working in television and he became a photo journalist until he retired in 2005.

Why not take advantage of his fame as an Olympic bronze medalist and turn pro?

“當我 14 或 15 there were pros training at the gym I went to after school,” Valdez explained, “There was one professional boxer there I really liked and looked up to. He was a world champion, who will remain nameless, and I watched him work out. I’ll never forget, he asked me if he could borrow $1.00. I didn’t even have a nickel and that really opened my eyes. Here was a world champion asking me for money. It stuck in my mind. I took a job as a reporter because I really needed (medical) benefits.

I try to go to clubs and help amateurs, but I don’t watch pro fights.

紐約 - 九月 12, 2018 – Undefeated super featherweight and former amateur standout James Wilkins will make his live television debut on ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, 九月 21 immediately following the SHOWTIME premiere of CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS, a documentary chronicling Wilkins and the 2015 New York Golden Gloves boxing tournament. Wilkins will face undefeated featherweight prospect Misael Lopez (8-0, 4 科斯) in the opening bout of what is now a four-fight ShoBox telecast. The back-to-back programs will begin at 8 P.M. ET/PT with CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS airing before the live ShoBox telecast at 9:45 P.M. ET/PT from Firelake Arena in Shawnee, 俄克拉何馬州.

Wilkins, of New York City, has five wins and five knockouts since turning professional two years ago following an accomplished amateur run. CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS documents one of the pinnacle moments of his amateur career as the Staten Island native fights through the 10-week tournament in hopes of establishing himself as an elite amateur prospect. Having already won the New York Golden Gloves in 2013 在 123 英鎊, CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS chronicles Wilkins’ journey as a 19-year-old competing in the 132-pound class and culminates with a dramatic 2015 冠軍回合.

“I’m honored to be a part of CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS,” the 22-year-old Wilkins said. “Fighting in the Golden Gloves was a life-changing experience for me and it’s a great feeling to know that boxing fans can watch the documentary on SHOWTIME and then watch my ShoBox debut right after.”

They call me ‘Crunchtimeand that’s what I’m bringing to ShoBox on September 21. I’ll be ripping and running and I look forward to putting on a spectacular performance against Misael Lopez.”

Wilkins, who counts former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. and former two-division champion Paulie Malignaggi as mentors, fought his way to the 2016 Olympic Trails in what was his last amateur tournament. His professional debut came in June of 2016 when he defeated Jack Grady via second-round knockout in a super lightweight contest.

Simply the best….. 羅伊·瓊斯, JR.

美國拳擊校友會, 等級 2018 Inductee

科羅拉多斯普林斯, 膝部. (九月 6, 2018) – Living legend 羅伊·瓊斯, JR., universally recognized as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all-time, leads a celebrated quintet of Class of 2018 inductees into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame.

The second annual USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame reception, held in conjunction with the 2018 USA Boxing Elite and Youth National Championships and Junior and Prep Open, 十二月 2-8, will be held Dec. 7, at the Radisson Hotel (215 S. Temple St.) in Salk Lake City, Utah.

除了瓊斯, 之類的 2018 also includes two U.S. Olympic gold medalists and world (專業的) 冠軍, 沃德Claressa盾, 教練的還有前美國拳擊全國總監 伊曼紐爾管家 和美國老將拳擊官員 湯姆·克利. The latter two will be posthumously inducted.

The charter class inducted last year included 穆罕默德·阿里霍利菲爾德, as well as veteran coaches 羅斯福桑德斯湯姆·庫爾特.

I am honored to be selected for induction into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame,” Jones commented, “especially as a member of this great class with my fellow inductees.

Amateur boxing gave me the chance to learn life skills as well as face every other possible scenario inside of the ring.

瓊斯, 具有諷刺意味的, got into boxing at the age of 11 because of Ali. “I saw Ali vs. () 弗雷澤and just felt as though Ali and I had the same mental concept on life,” Jones explained.

Jones went on to become one of the best amateur boxers in the world, compiling a reported 121-13 記錄, including gold medal performances at the 1984 National Junior Olympics and 1986 & 1987 National Golden Gloves Tournaments.

在 1988 Olympics in Seoul, 韓國, Jones reached the championship final of the light middleweight division against Park Si-Hun, 韓國. Jones suffered arguably the worst decision in boxing history, losing 3-2, despite outpunching his opponent, 86 到 32 landed punches, and he was forced to settle for a silver medal. Even his opponent admitted that Jones won their fight, leading the AIBA to later suspend the three judges who selected the hometown fighter as the winner.

How disgraceful was this decision? Jones was selected as the Val Barker Trophy winner as the best boxer of the 1988 Olympics and, due to controversy, the scoring system for Olympic boxing was changed, replacing the 20-point must system with electronic scoring.

I was angered,” Jones admitted, “yet promoted to prove that I was the best fighter there, and in the world, at that time.

Jones made his professional debut May 6, 1989, at home in Pensacola, 佛羅里達, in a scheduled eight-round bout, in which RJJ stopped Ricky Randall in the second round. His long, glorious journey has produced a remarkable 66-9 (47 科斯) 親紀錄, highlighted by nine major world titles in four different weight classes.

在 2003, Jones defeated 約翰·魯伊斯 by way of a 12-round unanimous decision to become the first former world middleweight champion to become world heavyweight title holder in more than a century.

The possessor of exceptional hand and foot speed, 運動能力, 運動和反射, Jones went undefeated through his first 34 親打架, 22-3 (14) 在世界冠軍戰鬥. Against former, present or future world champions, Jones was 19-9 (8 科斯) and included among his victims were greats such as 伯納德·霍普金斯大學, 詹姆斯·托尼, 邁克·麥卡勒姆,溫尼Pazienza, 維吉爾山, 安東尼奧·塔弗費利克斯·特立尼達.

今天, the 49-year-old Jones, technically speaking, is still an active fighter. He also has two promotional companies and gyms, located in Pensacola and Las Vegas, trains several pro boxers and serves as a color commentator for HBO Boxing. He recently opened gyms in South Africa.

For the past two years, Jones has hosted theFuture Stars of Boxing Tournament” 在拉斯維加斯, showcasing some of the best amateur boxers in the world.

Hosting the tournament in Las Vegas gives me the opportunity to give back to amateur boxing,” Jones explained. “It’s a great experience for the boxers and it reminds them that who they may have or still look up to, are watching them as well.

When USA Boxing alumni discuss their favorite fighters,” 說 克里斯tofflemire, 美國拳擊校友會執行董事, “Roy Jones is near the top of everyone’s list. His spectacular talent, dedication to his craft, and infectious personality make him a no-brainer to headline this year’s Hall of Fame class. He continues to give back to amateur boxing and support the next generation. Roy deserves to be celebrated for all he has accomplished, 我們期待著,以表彰他在12月。”

Quotes of Note from other World Champions

eorge Foreman: “(瓊斯) hits like a heavyweight and moved like a lightweight.

蒙特爾格里芬: “弗洛伊德 (梅威瑟, 小) was no comparison as far as speed. Roy was much faster.

邁克·麥卡勒姆: “(Jones is) the greatest fighter of all time.

If he ever hangs-up his gloves for good, 羅伊·瓊斯, JR. will be a first ballot inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. There may never be another boxer quite like RJJ.

Garcia and Stevens Close Out 2018 Youth World Championships with Wins

Team USA leaving Budapest with 4 medals

BUDAPEST, 匈牙利 (八月 31, 2018)The final day of the 2018 Youth World Championships in Budapest, Hungary was another golden day for Team USA, as both 天堂加西亞 (山, 加利福尼亞州。) 和 Asa Stevens (懷厄奈, 夏威夷) won the female and male flyweight titles..

Stevens began the final day of boxing in the first bout against 2018 European Champion Ivan Price of England. Leading up to this showdown, Stevens and the USA Boxing coaching staff worked on a plan that would result in victory.

“The past three days we were creating a game plan of keeping distance and doing a lot of faints,” said Stevens after his gold medal performance. “I feel like we utilized it very well and that is how I got the win.”

The flyweight boxed a total of five times through the 11-day tournament, which included a split decision win over Patrick Clancy (愛爾蘭), unanimous decision wins over Ibrahim Boukedim (法國) and Samandar Kholmurodov (Uzbekistan), as well as a split decision win over Bhavesh Kattimani (印度) 在半決賽中. His unanimous decision victory today over Price earned him his first World Championship title and the first youth flyweight title since Shakur Stevenson in 2014.

“This means a lot, no words can really explain how I feel,” stated Stevens. “This is the best feeling in the world.”

Garcia picked up her second World Championships title to add to her 2015 Junior World Championship title with her 4-1 split decision victory over India’s Anamika.

“My game plan was to use my jab and use that as a key,”加西亞說. “I wanted to also work in the body shots and wear her down with those and plenty of combinations.”

Like her teammate, Garcia boxed a total of five days in a grueling bracket that included three bouts in a row. Her victories included a split decision over Hatice Akbas (火雞) 在首輪, unanimous decision wins over Rinka Kinoshita (日本) and Simran Kaur (英國), as well as her rematch with Zhanssaya Abdaimova (哈薩克斯坦) by split decision in the semifinals.

Garcia’s win today adds her to a list of female American boxers that have won multiple amateur world titles that includes JaJaira Gonzalez and Claressa Shields. Garcia is the first American to win both a junior and youth world title since Gonzalez did so in 2013 和 2014/2015. Garcia will also look to join Gonzalez in the record books with a win at this October’s Youth Olympics.

“This win feels great because it was harder than my first title in 2015,” continued Garcia. “Everyone is older and more experienced at this level, and I worked very hard to get to the top spot.”

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Augie Sanchez (拉斯維加斯, 內華達州。), Team USA’s Head National Junior and Youth Coach, was awarded Best Coach of the Tournament honors, 而 Isamary阿基諾 (環球城, 得克薩斯州) was awarded her bronze medal during the medal ceremonies.

“I am very happy with the team,” said Sanchez at the end of the competition. “It was the whole staff that made this happen, and I am happy how our team performed overall.”

Team USA will begin their return home tomorrow with a total of three gold medals and one bronze after ten intense days of boxing. This year’s tournament brought over 350 boxers from over 50 countries from around the World. Joining Sanchez in the boxers corners throughout the tournament were assistant coaches Timothy Back (辛辛那提, 俄亥俄), Eliza Olson (Redwood, 加利福尼亞州。) 和 Rosario Solis (Irving, 得克薩斯州).

SHOWTIME® TO PREMIERE CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS, CHRONICLING THE INSPIRATIONAL JOURNEY OF NEW YORK’S GOLDEN GLOVES FIGHTERS

CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS To Premiere Friday, 九月 21 在Showtime

視圖, 分享, Embed Trailer: https://s.sho.com/2Msfq0X

紐約 - 八月 27, 2018 - SHOWTIME has acquired the television rights to CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS, a documentary film that takes viewers through the New York Golden Gloves tournament, one of the most prestigious amateur boxing tournaments in the country. Written and directed by journalist Bartle Bull, the film will premiere 星期五, 九月 21 在 8 P.M. ET / PT在Showtime.

CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS chronicles three inspiring fighters—James Wilkins, 尼薩·羅德里格斯, and Titus Williams—as they navigate the 10-week tournament and fight their way among 500 boxers from the five boroughs, all vying for the coveted title of Golden Gloves champion. Through the three intertwined yet unique narratives, the film explores the pressures and sacrifices on the arduous journey toward boxing greatness.

Shot in a cinema verité-style with no voice-over narration, the character-driven narrative examines what it means to “fight for your life,” not only for the boxers, but also for their coaches, mentors, teammates and loved ones. CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS includes genuine characters and intimate revelations set against the gritty urban landscape of New York City to create a powerful and layered account of the 2015 比賽.

The film follows Williams and Wilkins as they battle through opposite sides of the 132-pound bracket. Williams is the tournament favorite on the brink of professional success. He is mentored by coach Joe Higgins, a retired New York City firefighter suffering from illnesses sustained during rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Wilkins, a Staten Island native who channels his propensity for fighting into an amateur career, aims to beat Williams and establish himself as a prospect to watch as he turns to the professional ranks. 與此同時, single mother and teacher Rodriquez—a five-time Golden Glove champion and self-proclaimed, “fighting pride of the South Bronx”—attempts to cement her legacy as she sets her sights on the 2016 奧運選拔賽.

CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS is Bull’s first endeavor into documentary filmmaking. A New York based author and journalist by trade who specializes in foreign affairs and the Middle East, Bull has appeared on NPR, Fox News, 英國廣播公司, and other news outlets, and his work has been featured in New York Times, Washington Post, 和 華爾街日報.

CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS is executive produced by Donald Rosenfeld (Tree of Life, Jodorowsky’s Dune, Remains of the Day) and written and directed by Bull, in association with cinematographer Tom Hurwitz (The Queen of Versailles) and editor Michael Levine (Restrepo). The film was an official selection at the 2017 American Documentary Film Festival, 該 2017 Santa Barbara International Film Festival and Doc NYC 2017.CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS was named Best Feature at the 2017 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival.

科羅拉多斯普林斯, 科羅拉多州 (七月 9, 2018) – A star was born last month at the 45Chemistry Cup in Halle, 德國, when American light heavyweight Khalil Coe shocked the amateur boxing world, stopping Cuban’s multiple world champion Julio Cesar La Cruz in the opening round of the championship final match.

差不多 100 boxers represented 16 different countries at the Chemistry Cup, 含, 俄羅斯, 烏克蘭, 愛爾蘭, India and host Germany, in addition to the United States and Cuba.

The 21-year-old Coe, who was boxing in only his 25 比賽, his first on the International scene, stole the show and he was named Most Outstanding Boxer of the tournament. In the semifinals, Coe knocked out Matus Strnisko, of Slovakia, 在第一輪.

VOTE FOR KHALIL COE

Khalil Coe is a candidate for the USOC Best Male Athlete of the Month for June. Voting ends this evening at HTTPS://awards.teamusa.org/

Coe respected but he wasn’t intimidated by his much more experienced opponent, 2016 Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion La Cruz, who had one less fight in the World Boxing Series than Cue did during his entire amateur career.

My first fight in the tournament was the hardest I’d had,” Coe explained. “I studied him (La Cruz) a lot and watched him fight in the semifinals (defeating three-time European champion Joseph Ward (愛爾蘭), which was right after my semifinals fight. 他 (La Cruz) is very elusive and flashy, but he doesn’t like to get hit in the body. He moves his body, but he forgets about his head. I pulled him, on him, moving around with my footwork and shuffling. He threw a lazy jab and I hit him right on the chin with a right.

Coe’s short, compact right-hand punch landed right on the button, dropping La Cruz a little less than two-minutes into round one. The Cuban beat the count, but the referee ruled that he was unable to continue. La Cruz was still “男人” in the light heavyweight division and by knocking him out, Coe proved that he truly belongs with the elite, and that the No. 1-rated American is the fighter to beat in terms of qualifying for the 2020 中美. 國奧隊.

I let everybody know that I’m here,” Coe added. “I still need to work on a lot of different things. I need to throw more combinations, keep by stamina up, and improve everything to be better. I’m more of a pure boxer, but I have strength and punching power. Coach (比利)Walsh doesn’t change his fighters, he adds to what they have. The coaches put together a fight plan and I executed it.

Khalil’s performances in Germany were world class,” Team USA head coach Walsh said, “To be truly world class, we now have to repeat those performances regularly, and that’s where the challenge lies.

On this year’s USA vs. Ireland Northeast Tour, Coe was 2-0 against his Irish counterparts in Boston and Springfield

Coe often got into fights in school, until his mother sent him to a local gym, and his first amateur bout was when he was 12. If he wasn’t boxing right now, 6′ 1″ Coe believes he would probably be playing college football, as a fullback or defensive end.

Close with his USA teammates, particularly Keyshawn戴維斯, Coe lives and trains with them in Colorado Springs. “We’re more than a team,” the Jersey City, New Jersey boxer concluded, “we’re like a family – 男人, gals and coaches — 在科羅拉多斯普林斯.

I’m going to turn pro after the Olympics, one way or the other, God-willing, after I win a gold medal.

Tokyo is legitimately in Khalil Coe’s sights!

The team will be comprised of 天堂加西亞 (山, 加利福尼亞州。), Otha Jones III (托萊多, 俄亥俄), Roma Martinez (謙卑, 得克薩斯州) 和 哈雷Mederos (紐約, 紐約州).

We’ve got a great group of young talent representing Team USA at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires,” said USA Boxing High Performance Director Matt Johnson on the nominated boxers. “Each one has good international experience, having participated in a junior or youth world championships over the past few years. The bantamweight represented Team USA at the 2017 Youth World Championships in Guwahati, India before clinching her spot to Argentina with her winning performance at the 2018 Youth Continental Championships this May. She is a two-time USA Boxing Youth National Champion, and currently has a record of 53-7.

Garcia described being able to represent the United States at the Youth Olympics asamazing.” “Knowing that only four boxers are nominated, and I was one of them is a very huge accomplishment for me,” she stated.

Being able to represent my country at the Youth Olympics is something I have worked hard for and now that I get the opportunity, I will be sure to work even harder to bring home that gold medal.

Light welterweight Jones III solidified his position on Team USA by winning gold at the 2018 Youth Continental Championships. The featherweight was the 2016 USA Boxing Youth National Champion and 2017 USA Boxing Youth National Championship silver medalist. The Youth Olympic Games will be Martinez’s first international tournament of 2018, where she will be looking for her first international medal.

When I received the notification that I was nominated for the Youth Olympic Games, I felt resurrected,” 馬丁內斯說. “I have experienced a few devastating life losses in the past six months, and was feeling confused about my future in the sport,” she explained.

“然而, when I was contacted about this amazing opportunity, my vision became clear, my mind focused and my heart determined to take this opportunity not only for myself, but for every person who hoped and dreamed for a chance like this. I plan to take on this journey to Argentina with me; my faith, my boxing skills and a quote from my late teammate: ‘a boxers favorite scriptureit is better to give than to receive.

It feels amazing to be able to go to Argentina and represent my country in what I love to do most and get the chance to showcase my talent in front of everyone,” stated Mederos.

I can guarantee you, the best Harley you’ve ever seen, both physically and mentally, will go out there and do the best that I can do and make everyone proud.

All four boxers will return to Colorado Springs in July to begin training for the Youth Olympics. 加西亞, Jones and Mederos will use the 2018 Youth World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in August as a tuneup leading to the event before heading to Argentina in late September.

Keyshawn Davis is Pushing His Way to the Top Norfolk, 將. native is 2020 Olympic hopeful for Team USA

科羅拉多斯普林斯, 膝部. (六月 8, 2018) Overcoming adversity is something many people deal with throughout their lives, and it makes that person who they are. For Keyshawn Davis, he has been overcoming adversity from the beginning, and he is now on his way to the top of the boxing world.

Davis began boxing when he was just nine-years-old, after his mother took him and two of his brothers to the gym. They were constantly fighting each other and fighting in school. After about an hour of watching two kids around his age spar his mother asked if they wanted to sign up. The next day Keyshawn and his two brothers were in the gym training.

自那以後, Davis has won numerous titles and is now on his first elite high-performance squad following his win at the 2017 美國拳擊全國錦標賽. Following that win, he has made Colorado Springs, 膝部. a second home, as he spends a great deal of his time training at the United States Olympic Training Center.

Training for his first year at the elite level began with one of the largest multi-nation training camps USA Boxing has ever hosted. Davis got the opportunity to spar with not only his American teammates, but boxers from Great Britain, New Zealand and Poland. The preparation led to one of his proudest moments of his young career, his first elite international tournament and title at the Strandja Tournament in Bulgaria.

It was a very different experience, being that it was my first time out of the country,” stated Davis. “I really had to get used to the different environment, especially the time difference, as it threw off my sleep schedule at first.

然而, he did not let anything distract him from reaching the top of the podium.

The feeling was just so unreal,” said Davis about his gold medal performance in Bulgaria. “I told myself that this is just one gold and I need to be standing here after every tournament. It was just a great feeling.

Shortly after his winning performance in Bulgaria, Davis was back in the ring representing Team USA on the USA vs. IRL Northeast Boxing Tour. Only fighting in one of the three stops of the tour, Davis made every minute of it count, as he pulled off another impressive victory in front of a large number of American fans.

然而, before the success came struggles.

I am a kid from Norfolk, 將. that started with nothing; Just my mother and her five children,” stated Davis.

As life went on, I kept getting better in the ring, but outside the ring was horrible, from anger problems to getting sent to a mental institution,” continued Davis. “I would’ve never thought I would be in the position I am today, so I thank God that he blessed me with all my supporters; from my sisters, Shanice and Shantel Davis, also my brothers, Keon and Kelvin Davis, and of course my mother, Wanda Davis. Without them I wouldn’t be here today. I am a walking miracle and I just want to show the world what Keyshawn Davis really can do.

Helping Keyshawn get past his struggles has been his coach who has been there from the beginning, Kay Korma, 以及 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson.

Last year when I was put in the mental home, they were both right there pushing me to get back on track,” Davis stated. “They never gave up on me or doubted me. They always knew what I was capable of, even though I was in a bad place.

Another source of motivation and help came from another teammate, 特洛伊艾斯利, who has been there by his side getting to experience Keyshawn’s first year as an elite with him.

Troy has been a huge help for me during my first year on the elite high-performance squad,” mentioned Davis. “He has been telling me what foods I might need on a trip to help me maintain weight.

When Davis went to Bulgaria for his first international tournament, Troy was there representing Team USA with him. “He told me how he felt his first time fighting internationally, and I just took all his information and used it to my advantage.

Now the goal is to continue training and being successful at the international level. He has hopes of becoming an Olympic Champion in 2020 and being able to give back to his family.

My biggest motivation is just to give my family a better life.

With one gold under his belt, Davis will look for his second international title at the 2018 Chemistry Cup later this month. You can continue to follow his journey to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics through social media via Instagram (@keyshawndavis1) or SnapChat (@key4999).
