WORCESTER, MASS (Mei 16, 2019) – Drie-time, twee-divisie wereldkampioen “De Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera is dedicating his 50th pro strijd, the last in his hometown of Worcester, to the Boys & Girls Club in Worcester, Massachusetts. A portion of the proceeds from “Quest For 50,” gepresenteerd door Shearns Boxing Promotions (SBP) and Rivera Promotions Entertainment, will benefit the Boys & Girls Club.

The 46-year-old Rivera (42-6-1, 25 KO) faces former WFC champion Travis “Sweet Feet” Scott (19-5, 5 KO), of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the eight-round main event at The Palladium in Worcester.

Rivera, a full-time court officer in Worcester, has had a special relationship for more than 30 years with the Worcester Boys & Girls Club and its director of boxing, Carlos Garcia, wie is “The Godfather of Worcester Boxing.”

Rivera moved to Worcester from Springfield 30 years ago at the age of 16 to pursue a boxing career, which included being coached by Garcia. Rivera had siblings and other relatives living in Worcester and after living with an aunt for a month, Jose moved into an apartment with another boxer, four-time national amateur champion Bobby Harris.

“The Worcester Boys & Girls Club helped me stay off the streets so I could focus on my dream of becoming world champion,” Rivera remembered. “It was a place for me and so many others to go and be safe. Kinderen, not just boxers, can be kids there, where they don’t have to worry about what’s happening in the streets.

“Carlos has played a tremendous part of my life and so many others, influencing us not only to become good boxers, but to be good people in the community. That was always so important to him and he emphasized being a good person. Ik deed mijn best. He was always fair across the board and gave us all opportunities. He took a liking to me and brags that he never had to throw me out of the Boys & Girls Club. I graduated from high school and went after my dream in 1992 when I turned pro. Carlos is big in amateur boxing, but not so much with pros, because he doesn’t have the time to train pros. I made sure that when turned pro, moeilijk, that he was part of my team. And he’s still a big part of my team and life.”

The number of Worcester youths Garcia has had a positive effect on, life-changing in many respects, is countless. One of those many people is Jose’s longtime friend and his current head trainer, Sean Fitzgerald, who retired as a boxer in 2001 met een 29-2-2 pro record. “Fitzy” remembers the fir time he read the sign over the door in the gym at the Boys & Girls Club: “Better to seat than bleed.”

Fitzy lived with his father when his parents divorced and at the age of 10, his father sent him to the Boys & Girls Club to attend an after-school program. “Fitzy” said he had to earn his way into Garcia’s good graces.

“Carlos didn’t talk to me for the first 5-6 weken,” Fitzgerald explained. “Vervolgens, he put me in the ring as a sparring partner, and I was badly beaten. I had a bloody nose and black eye, but the next day I came back, and the rest is history. Carlos was a great mentor, rough at times, but always there for you. I remember seeing the boxing team jackets. It intrigued me. When I got my jacket and started wearing it, I got respect from everybody, and then I knew that I belonged. I learned a lot about life at the Boys & Girls Club, being with there with people from different generations and cultures. I met many friends there who I never would have met.

“The Boys & Girls Club is safe. I was from a tough area in Worcester. My father worked and it was easy to get in trouble with no supervision. Carlos stayed on top of me to graduate from school and if I was home sick, he come buy with chicken soup to make sure I was alright. My father was in my life big-time, but I joke that I had two moms growing up, my father and Carlos. Going to the Boys & Girls Club was something to look forward to every day.

“Carlos always taught us to never make the mistakes he did in life. He wanted us to go to school, stay out of trouble, and be a good person. He’s helped so many people over the years. Look around Worcester and you’ll see them: police and court officers, fire fighters, and so many others. The Boys & Girls Club was a great experience for me and so many other kids from Worcester.”

Garcia has been the director of boxing at the Worcester Boys & Girls Club since 1982. Two year ago, Garcia was inductred into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame.

“Never in his life has Jose even raised his voice to me,” Garcia commented. “He treats me like his father and he’s like one of my sons. There aren’t not too many guys like him and he’s so well respected in the community. He came to Worcester from Springfield to train with ne and stayed with me. Jose helps everyone and now he’s promoting to help local boxers.

“We’re at the Boys & Girls Club to and that’s the way it really is here. It’s so good to see so many in this community who’ve gone through our boxing program and are good people, good husbands, good parents. It makes me feel so proud. ‘Fitzy’ was a hyper kid. He’s a real gentleman who now does so much for kids here. I’ve never had a signed contract with any of the pro boxers I’ve worked with because I trust them.”

An All-Massachusetts clash pits welterweights Khiry “TNT” Todd (8-1, 6 KO), van Lynn, and New Bedford’s Ray Oliveira, Jr. (8-2, 1 KO), the son of New England boxing favorite“Sucra” Ray Oliveira (8-1, 1 KO), in de vierronde, co-featured event..

For the first time in his young career, Danbury, CT welterweight Omar “Het Beest” Bordoy, Jr. (7-1, 2 KO) will be coming off a loss to fight Tyrone “Handen van steen” Luckey (9-10-3, 7 KO) in een zes-ronde Bout.

(Augustus 19, 2018) – Zeven jaar na zijn laatste gevecht, “De Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera gisteravond op grootse wijze terug naar de ring (Zaterdag) aan de kop “Thuiskomst, gepresenteerd door Granite Chin Promotions in samenwerking met Rivera Promotions Entertainment, The Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts.

 

 

 

De 45-jarige Rivera (42-6-1, 25 KO), 35 kilo lichter dan hij was in februari toen hij begon met trainen, pakte het huis in zijn geboorteplaats in, vermaakte zijn ondersteunende fans volledig. Drie-time, wereldkampioen in twee divisies Rivera zette zich onder druk Larry “Slomoshun: Smid (10-38-1, 7 KO) vanaf de openingsbel en hij gaf nooit op.

 

 

 

Het duurde een paar rondes voordat Rivera de roest had versleten, maar hij gaf Smith een vast dieet van bodyshots, geleidelijk zijn tegenstander afbrekend, terwijl hij ronde na ronde op punten won. Twee keer in de zesde ronde leek het erop dat Smith klaar was, maar de stoere Texaan toonde veel moed om te overleven.

 

 

 

Eindelijk, Rivera sloot de show af in de zevende ronde, toen Smith zijn hand brak in de vijfde ronde en niet verder kon, knielend in zijn hoek, duidelijk pijn.

 

 

 

“Ik ben altijd stoer geweest,” zei Rivera na het gevecht, “maar ik was een beetje roestig. Hij testte me vroeg, maar, Toen hij eenmaal zag dat ik nergens heen ging, wist hij dat hij ruzie zou krijgen. Ik begon met de warming-up in de vierde ronde. Ik was altijd een 12-rondenvechter. In de co-featured evenement, Worcester super middengewicht Kendrick Ball, Jr. (10-1-2, 7 KO) gesloopt Fabian “De Wolf” Valdez (2-4), hem op de vloer met een rechter uppercut en kort daarna maakte hij hem af met een venijnig lichaamsschot voor een technische knock-out overwinning in de openingsronde. De rematch tussen Worcester junior middengewicht Khiary Gray (16-4, 12 KO) en Antonio Chaves Fernández (9-34, 4 KO) eindigde op dezelfde manier als hun eerste ontmoeting drie jaar geleden. Ook voor het eerst thuis gevochten, Gray schoot zijn tegenstander uit het spel, hem kraken met een perfecte foto, linkse gevechtscombinatie die Fernandez op zijn rug zette. Fernandez versloeg de teller, maar scheidsrechter Bob Benoit stopte de actie.

 

 

Southbridge, MA junior middengewicht Wilfredo “de Sucaro” Heidens (5-0, 3 KO) bleef ongeslagen, een meedogenloze lichaamsaanval gebruiken om te laten vallen Engelberto “Guarura” Valenzuela (11-15, 3 KO) drie keer, de laatste beëindigde het gevecht halverwege de derde ronde.

 

 

 

Springfield, MA junior lichtgewicht Joshua Orta (1-0, 1 KO) leverde een indrukwekkend profdebuut op in een schuurbrander dat eindigde toen (1-8-1, 1 KO), van Worcester, kon na de derde ronde niet verder vechten.

 

 

 

Worcester weltergewicht Eslih Owuso (1-0) gooide een shutout in zijn profdebuut, terrasveteraan Bryan “De baksteen” Abraham (6-31-2, 6 KO) twee keer in de tweede ronde, op weg naar een unaniem besluit te winnen.

 

 

 

In de openingswedstrijd van de avond, 45-jaar oud José Engel “KO” Ortiz (5-14-1, 2 KO) gedaald Patrick Leal (0-5) 10-seconden in de strijd, nog een keer later in de openingsronde, en hield hem tegen in de tweede. Oritz, uit Springfield vechten, MA via Puerto Rico, vocht voor het eerst in vijf jaar, en hij boekte zijn eerste overwinning in zeven.

(Augustus 15, 2018) – Drie-time, twee-divisie wereldkampioen “De Gallo” José Rivera heeft een nieuwe tegenstander voor zijn comeback-gevecht deze vrijdagavond “Thuiskomst”, gepresenteerd door Granite Chin Promotions (GCP) in samenwerking met Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), The Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts.

 

 

 

De 45-jarige Rivera (41-6-1, 24 KO), tegen wie werd gematcht Ruben “Moderne strijder” Galvan, kwam er pas gisteren achter (Dinsdag) dat Galvan de avond ervoor een vinger had gebroken. Texaanse veteraan Larry “Slomoshun” Smid (10-37-1, 7 KO) is de late vervanger van Rivera in het hoofdevenement van acht ronden.

 

 

 

“Ik ben geen fan van late veranderingen,” zei Rivera, “maar op dit punt is het dat of geen gevecht, en ik heb te hard getraind om niet te vechten.”

 

 

 

Rivera heeft voor het laatst gevochten 2011, een beslissing in acht ronden nemen Paul Mpendo, in de Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.

 

 

 

De naam van het evenement is “Thuiskomst” omdat vijf strijders in actie uit Worcester komen, waaronder drie die daar nog nooit als professionals hebben gevochten.

 

 

 

Super middengewicht Kendrick Ball, Jr. (9-1-2, 6 KO) en junior middengewicht Khiary Gray(15-4, 11 KO), beide gepromoot door CES Boxing, zal voor het eerst thuis in Worcester als profs vechten in een paar gevechten van zes ronden. (Juli 31, 2018) – Een tiental jaar later veroverde hij zijn derde wereldtitel in twee verschillende gewichtsklassen, zeven sinds zijn laatste gevecht, “De Gallo” José Rivera keert terug naar de ring augustus 17 aan de kop “Thuiskomst”, gepresenteerd door Granite Chin Promotions (GCP) in samenwerking met Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), The Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts.

 

 

 

De 45-jarige Rivera (41-6-1, 24 KO) heeft al meer verloren dan 30 pond, nu binnen vier pond van zijn gecontracteerde gewicht, sinds hij eerder dit jaar begon met trainen. Hij zal tegen headlinen zijn Ruben “Moderne strijder” Galvan (27-26-4, 10 KO) in de acht-ronde belangrijkste gebeurtenis.

 

 

 

In 1997, Rivera veroverde de Internationale Boksorganisatie (IBO) Wereldtitel weltergewicht, stoppen Gilberto Flores in de tweede ronde. Zes jaar later, hij reisde naar Duitsland om ongeslagen aan de slag te gaan, woonplaats favoriet Michel Trabant (38-0) voor de vacante World Boxing Association (WBA) Wereldkampioenschap weltergewicht, waarin Rivera een beslissing van 12 ronden en de riem won.

 

 

 

Voor bijna 10,000 fans van hun geboorteplaats in Worcester, Rivera sloot zijn bokscarrière af door in twaalf ronden een unaniem besluit te winnen 2006 boven titelverdediger Alejandro Garcia(25-1) voor de WBA Wereldtitel superweltergewicht.

 

 

 

“Het idee om terug te keren naar de ring begon bij mijn zoon. (Juli 19, 2018) – Granite Chin-promoties (GCP) and Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE) hosted a press conference yesterday at The Ballot Box in Worcester, Massachusetts, to make a major announcement, as well as introduce local fighters on the August 17thpro boxing card at The Palladium in Worcester.

 

 

 

Drie-time, twee-divisie wereldkampioen “De Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera (41-6-1, 24 KO) is making his return in the “Making History” main event, in large part because he wanted to fight on the same card as his son, A.J. Rivera, who was to become the first pro boxer who was born with Spina Bifida. A.J., who is a rising matchmaker in New England, was unable to get medically cleared in time and he will not be fighting Aug. 17.

“Helaas,” announced promoter Chuck Shears, who co-promotes Granite Chin Promotions with Chris Traietti, “A.J. isn’t fighting on this show because he couldn’t get medically cleared in time.”

 

 

 

“I trained hard and was within five or six pounds of my contract weight,” a disappointed A.J. Rivera uitgelegd. “I passed all of the medical tests except for the CATSCAN. Rivera, because they will be “Making History,” presented by Rivera Promotions Entertainment and Granite Chin Promotions, Augustus 17 at The Palladium.

The doctors told my parents that, if I survived, I’d only live to be 19, in a wheelchair and a little autistic. I had surgery the next day and my pops kept hope. WORCESTER, Massa. (April 2, 2017) – Populair zwaargewicht uit Massachusetts Vinnie “Amerikaanse nachtmerrie” verhaal was te veel voor voormalig Zuid-Amerikaans kampioen Gilberto Matheus “De magie” Zondagen in de afgelopen nacht “De toekomst van New England 2” hoofdevenement in Worcester Palladium. Een capaciteit van 1,700 rockte de vintage locatie van begin tot eind.
“De toekomst van New England 2” werd gepresenteerd door Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), dat eigendom is van en wordt geëxploiteerd door drievoudig gepensioneerden, twee divisie wereldkampioen Jose Antonio Rivera en zijn zoon, koppelaarster Anthonee (A.J.) Rivera. Dat maakte Rivera bekend “De toekomst van New England 3” zal worden gehouden 10 juni bij DCU-centrum, Tentoonstellingszaal, in Worcester.

Het feelgoodverhaal van de avond was de langverwachte terugkeer van Manchester (CT) lichtgewicht Mat “Scherpe schutter” Remillard (24-1, 13 KO), die vijf jaar in de gevangenis zat en al zes jaar niet had gevochten. Remillard sloeg zijn tegenstander, Augustine “Meedogenloos” Maura (6-2-3 3 KO), wiens taaiheid tijdens de wedstrijd te zien was toen Remillard zijn Lawrence sloeg (MA) tegenstander van het lichaam en ga op weg naar een unaniem besluit van acht ronden (80-71, 79-72, 78-73) in het co-feature. Mauras kreeg in de vierde ronde een punt in mindering vanwege een kopstoot.
“Ik was een beetje roestig, maar ik werd beter naarmate het gevecht vorderde,” zei Remillard. “Hij is een stoere jongen die vanbinnen glad was. Als het gevecht wat langer duurde, Ik denk dat ik hem daar weg zou hebben gehaald.”
Worchester zwaargewicht Bryan Daniëls (4-0, 2 KO) bleef ongeslagen, laten vallen “Geld” Mike Sawyer (7-8, 5 KO) vier keer in de openingsronde, de laatste komt aan het einde van een wrede linkse hoek, resulterend in een scheidsrechter Mike Ryan stopte onmiddellijk de wedstrijd zonder te tellen.

Drievoudig kampioen van de USA Boxing Nationals Elvis Figueroa (1-0, 1 KO), uit Nieuwe Haven (CT), zorgde voor een sterk professioneel debuut, het stoppen van het Braziliaanse supermiddengewicht Afdeling Ribiero (0-4), die na twee ronden niet meer verder kon.
Worcester weltergewicht Andy González (6-1, 5 KO) over een wedstrijd tot een unaniem besluit van vier ronden gekomen Antonio Chávez Fernandes (7-30-4, 2 KO), van Brockton (MA).

WORCESTER, Massa. (Maart 20, 2017) – The long trip back begins April 1st voor Mat “Scherpe schutter” Remillard, 12 years to the day from his professional debut, op de “De toekomst van New England 2” show at the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Remillard (23-1, 13 KO), fighting out of Manchester, Connecticut, hasn’t boxed for the six years, due to him serving a five-year prison sentence. He takes on Lawrence (MA) lichtgewicht Augustine “Meedogenloos” Maura (6-1-3, 3 KO) in the eight-round co-feature. If their tense, near volatile stare-down at a recent press conference is a true indication, Remillard vs. Mauras is not going the distance, to put things mildly.
De toekomst van New England 2″ wordt gepresenteerd door Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), dat eigendom is van en wordt geëxploiteerd door drievoudig gepensioneerden, twee divisie wereldkampioen Jose Antonio Rivera en zijn zoon, Anthonee (A.J.) Rivera.
“I am excited to have a boxer of Remillard’s caliber on our ‘New England’s Future 2’ boks,” promoter Jose Antonio Rivera remarked. “He has a tough match against August time Mauras for his first fight back. Knowing Remillard, hoewel, he wouldn’t have it any other way. I want to thank Matt, Paul Cichon (hoofdtrainer) and their team for trusting Rivera Promotions Entertainment for Matt’s first boxing match back from his long layoff.”
Remillard is a former World Boxing Council (WBC) Verenigde Staten & Youth World, North American Boxing Federation (NABF) en de World Boxing Organization (WBO) vedergewicht kampioen. His lone pro loss came in his last fight, Maart 23, 2011 in Atlantic City to then rising star Mikey Garcia (24-0), when Remillard retired after 11 rondes. He won’t make excuses; echter, he never should have taken the fight with Garcia, facing the impending court case that sent him to prison and working with a new head trainer he’d only met two weeks prior to the fight.
“I’m confident I can get back to where I was in about a year,” the 30-year-old Remillard said. “A dream come true would be a rematch with Garcia, at any weight, but I have to earn that shot. Everybody wants a rematch with the guy who gave you the first loss. It seldom happens but, als niet, in time I believe there will be other big fights out there for me.
“I’m fighting an opponent who fought by buddy, Chip Perez, drie keer (0-2-1), so I’m familiar with his style. He doesn’t back down. I don’t expect him to back down against me…until he feels my power. I’m going to take out those five years that I was away on him. I’ve been through so much the last six year but I’m most comfortable in the gym. The past is past and this is my last run. Paul and I have a lot of unfinished business to take care of.”
Seventeen years ago, Chicon first met Remillard at the Manchester PAL gym, but he made the 13-year-old aspiring boxer earn his opportunity to be trained. Paul made Matt clean the bathrooms, take care of spit buckets, etc. before he started training him.
“When he returned to the gym a few months back, I saw that his work ethic hadn’t faded,” Cichon commented. “I don’t believe he’s really that far away from where he was six years ago. He was idle five years but his first day back he sparred 12 rondes. He stayed in good physical shape and is hungrier than ever. He thinks he has something to prove after his last fight, but he really doesn’t have anything to prove to me or anybody else. He is fighting a tough kid but Matt’s going to be victorious. I think in four or five more fights he’ll be back where he was in boxing.”
