A native of Las Cruces, N.M., Nicco trains in the Tapia home garage, enjoys studying sociology to “look at people from a different perspective,” dislikes mathematics, and currently has no plans to further an academic career following his 2023 graduation.

“I don’t really plan to go to college,” said the music fan who freestyle raps in his downtime. “I want to keep pushing myself in the ring and turn pro as soon as I get enough experience.”

Surrounded by the sweet science from an early age, Nicco fondly looks back on innumerable heartwarming memories of watching his father train for upcoming fights.

“I used to go to the gym and run around with my Dad every day. When the bell rang, I held up the gloves with him.”

Outside of boxing, the father-son pairing spent quality time playing other sports, enjoying delicious desserts, and tuning into their favorite television programs.

“We used to go to the park, play basketball, and jump on the trampoline,” Nicco recalled. “Dad used to give me ice cream sandwiches. I remember going into his room and watching the show ‘Cops’ together.”

Aiming to find inspiration and discover boxing tips from one of boxing’s all-time greatest fighters, young Nicco frequently rewatches Johnny’s classic bouts.

“I study his speed, head movement, and angles,” said the teenager who models much of his fighting style after his Dad and Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

When asked to name his favorite “Mi Vida Loca” fight, Nicco did not hesitate in listing Johnny Tapia’s hard-fought victory over fellow Albuquerquean and former world champion Danny Romero for the IBF/WBO junior bantamweight titles on July 18, 1997, a Las Vegas, Nev.

“The crowd was wild and crazy,” Nicco recollected. “I love studying my Dad’s boxing technique.”

Originally scheduled to fight at Inn of the Mountain Gods on July 31, 2021, the aspiring actor and former viola player pulled out of his amateur debut when he sustained a hand fracture.

“I was playing football with friends and landed on my hand wrong,” lamented the proud holder of a driver’s license. “It was the first time I injured myself.”

Less than four months later, Nicco is eager to thrill the Mescalero crowd on Nov. 20 before Barrera and De Leon take center stage.

“I am ticking off the days and can’t wait for this night to come.”

“I was surrounded by violence growing up,” said the 25-year-old lightweight contender who is 30-0 con 23 KO. “A lot of people that I was around went to prison; I was the only one who didn’t. Boxing was my way out, my safe haven. The sport saved me.”

“It was summer, and we picked cantaloupes in the hot sun all day,” said the multi-faceted student who is currently taking psychology classes at Odessa College. “That was the year I first won Nationals. I still trained while working in the fields. It was the best and the worst.”

Recalling the arduous memories when he did not know where he would sleep or locate his next meal, the Native American history fan finds solace in giving back to the El Paso community during the holiday season.

“I love to help out at shelters because I have been in that situation where I needed food and a place to stay,” said Santa’s helper who also hands out gifts at west Texas hospitals each December. “It makes me feel good to see the children smile.”

Hoping to battle for a world crown within the next year, the never-married Mendoza counsels the wedded on social media when not honing his skills in the squared circle.

“I go on Instagram Live because people ask me for marriage advice. A lot of people need help.”

La resa dei conti del titolo dei pesi medi dello scorso fine settimana tra Canelo Alvarez e Daniel Jacobs ha visto anche l'annuale Box Fan Expo, tenutosi presso il Las Vegas Convention Center. Gli incredibili cimeli in mostra e l'azione di boxe amatoriale dal vivo hanno completato una serie di combattenti campioni del mondo passati e presenti disponibili per rapidi incontri e saluti.

Come appassionato di boxe per tutta la vita, è stato un peccato che ho avuto solo poco più di due ore da trascorrere all'evento prima di tornare alla T-Mobile Arena per l'inizio degli incontri undercard. Il tempo che ho potuto trascorrere è stato davvero piacevole. I prezzi erano ragionevoli per incontrare queste leggende fistic e avere qualche momento per parlare e scattare foto. La media $20 -$25 il prezzo per un servizio fotografico era significativamente inferiore a quello che sarebbe andato perso al casinò in un singolo giro di roulette.

James Toney era lì in giacca e cravatta, dimostrando che può persino rendere elegante il plaid. Per un ragazzo noto per una natura scontrosa, era molto accomodante e ha detto che sarà a Filadelfia per uno spettacolo dal vivo a giugno 7 e spera di vedermi lì.

Nello stand successivo c'era l'emittente della Hall of Fame Al Berstein, che ho avuto il privilegio di intervistare nel 2011. Quando mi è stato detto della mia ammirazione per il suo lavoro di classe e di essere un fan sin dai suoi giorni con Barry Tompkins nei Thursday Night Fights di ESPN, era umile e riconoscente.

La linea per incontrare Roy Jones Jr. era lungo ma valeva la pena aspettare. Mentre il tempo per parlare con Roy era breve, Ho potuto menzionare quanto sia stato un onore incontrare uno dei più grandi interpreti della mia generazione e come mi sono seduto a pochi metri da lui quando era sul set di Creed II.

Mentre la fila per incontrare il leggendario Sugar Ray Leonard è stata eccezionalmente lunga, si vedeva che si stava davvero divertendo, sfoggiando quel sorriso da un milione di dollari e facendo il suo famoso servizio fotografico con i pugni alzati con i fan. Sfortunatamente, con il tempo che scorre a breve, Non ho avuto l'opportunità di incontrare uno dei miei combattenti preferiti crescendo. Mi sarebbe piaciuto mostrargli una foto quando avevo quattro anni, dondolando sul sacco da boxe di Sugar Ray Leonard che mi è stato dato.

A pochi metri di distanza c'era uno dei rivali più famosi di Sugar Ray, il grande Thomas “Hitman” Hearns. Mentre Hitman ha mostrato un certo rallentamento con l'invecchiamento, dimostra ancora di essere una figura imponente, ma ora sostituisce quello sguardo spaventoso con un sorriso caloroso.

All'incontro con Thomas Hearns c'era anche l'attuale campione IBF dei pesi super piuma Tevin Farmer, un collega di Filadelfia, che ho avuto l'opportunità di vedere crescere da un 7-4-1 pugile operaio a 29-4-1 campione del mondo.

La mia visita non sarebbe completa senza fermarmi a vedere "The Pazmanian Devil" Vinny Paz, sempre uno dei miei combattenti d'azione preferiti e personalità carismatiche. Invece di una stretta di mano, mi ha salutato con un grande abbraccio ed ha espresso disappunto per il fatto che mio padre non si fosse unito a me all'expo.

Nel breve lasso di tempo, era impossibile incontrare tutti i grandi combattenti, incluso Michael Spinks, Riddick Bowe, Errol Spence, Anthony Dirrell, e Earnie Shavers. Essendo il weekend del Cinco de Mayo, le linee per alcune delle leggende messicane avvolte intorno al pavimento del centro congressi. Mikey Garcia, Marco Antonio Barerra, Erik Morales, e Juan Manuel Marquez si sono rivelati tutti eccezionalmente popolari. Ma niente in confronto al boato della folla filo-messicana quando è stato presentato il grande Julio Cesar Chavez.

Partecipare a questo evento è stato un sogno che si avvera e potevo solo desiderare di avere più tempo da trascorrere all'evento. Tutto è stato fatto in modo così professionale e i presenti sono stati estremamente accomodanti.
