El boxejador de pes pesat de Houston Darius Fulghum posa en suspens la carrera d'infermeria per perseguir el somni olímpic

COLORADO SPRINGS, Volta. (Febrer 26, 2020) – Els boxejadors aficionats sovint prenen diferents rutes en els seus viatges personals i el pes pesat de HoustonDarius Fulghum ha posat la seva carrera fora del ring en suspens per perseguir els seus somnis de boxa.

Fulghum era un lluitador a l'escola secundària a Killeen, Texas. Va començar a boxejar 2015 i ràpidament va desenvolupar una passió per la "Sweet Science,” en gran part pel fet de ser un esport unipersonal. No necessitava dependre dels companys, preferint guanyar o perdre pel seu compte. Tot i que tenia prou talent per ser un lluitador col·legiat, hauria suposat una pressió econòmica excessiva per a la seva família.

"Vaig tenir aquesta picor competitiva i estava força bé quan vaig començar a boxar,", va dir Dariuis. "Sabia que podia fer qualsevol cosa que em proposés. Vull redefinir la boxa. No sóc un boxejador típic que va créixer al carrer. Ni tan sols m'agrada lluitar; Sóc passiu i mai he tingut una baralla al carrer".

El jove Fulghum, de 23 anys, actualment té la mirada ferma en representar el seu país als Jocs Olímpics de Tòquio 2020. La boxa professional seguirà, però, per ara, s'està entrenant dur per classificar-se per competir als Jocs Olímpics col·locant-se entre els tres primers classificats del Torneig de Qualificació d'Amèrica, 26 de març-abril 3, a Buenos Aires, Argentina. També hi haurà una altra oportunitat d'"Última oportunitat"., si és necessari, a la qualificació mundial, Maig 13-14, a París, on els tres primers classificats també es classificaran per als Jocs Olímpics.

"És molt difícil no pensar en els Jocs Olímpics tot el temps,", admet. "Intento no pensar-hi massa, però ho tinc al cap perquè he somiat amb ser olímpic i ara estic molt a prop. He fet els sacrificis per ser olímpic i després seré olímpic la resta de la meva vida.

"Escolto els meus entrenadors. En el calor del moment, quan les coses són més estressants, Em sento el desfavorit i actuo fins al moment absolut. Va ser fer o morir a les proves olímpiques. Només em nego a perdre".

Sens dubte, Fulgham va respondre a la pressió dels judicis de manera positiva, molesta la favorita dels judicis previsAdrian Tillman en la primera ronda, i després rodant entre els oponents fins que va assegurar el títol.

"La gent no em coneixia," Va explicar Fulgham. "Vaig ser el desfavorit perquè no vaig competir en molts tornejos perquè estava en (infermeria) escola. Les meves finals sempre eren al desembre (mateix temps que els nacionals dels EUA).  Vaig fer una pausa a la meva agenda 2018, quan vaig guanyar una medalla d'or al Torneig Nacional de Guants d'Or. És com funcionava el meu horari. Així que, No havia lluitat en molts tornejos, però vaig poder colar-me quan més importava".

Fulghum va competir recentment en el seu primer torneig internacional al prestigiós Torneig Strandja de Bulgària, guanyant un dels dos partits. L'experiència, encara que, no tenia preu, possiblement un canvi de carrera pel que fa a la preparació per als Jocs Olímpics.

“No només va ser el meu primer torneig internacional,", va assenyalar, “Va ser la primera vegada que vaig fer una caixa sense barret (com serà el cas dels Jocs Olímpics), i vaig lluitar amb nois de països estrangers amb diferents estils. Va ser una gran experiència perquè ara no em quedaré cec a la qualificació olímpica".

Membres de l'equip de qualificació olímpica de boxa dels EUA, com Fulghum, està de descans abans de tornar a entrenar amb els seus companys al Centre d'entrenament olímpic i paralímpic dels Estats Units a Colorado Springs..

"Vaig informar-hi per primera vegada el passat 2 de gener i m'encanta,", va assenyalar Fulghum. "Tots els esportistes somien amb entrenar amb atletes de primer nivell on no hi hagi distraccions i entrenadors de primer nivell. Em desperto, menjar, dormir, entrenar i tornar-ho a fer l'endemà. Aquest és el meu horari".

Fulghum va obtenir el títol d'infermeria el maig passat, però ara mateix i per al futur immediat es concentra plenament en la boxa.

“Vaig posar l'educació en primer lloc i vaig obtenir el meu títol,", va concloure Fulgham. "Sempre tindré infermeria després de la boxa. Però vaig somiar amb anar als Jocs Olímpics durant tot l'escola. Vaig posar la boxa en suspens i ara he deixat la infermeria al costat per poder dedicar-me tot a la boxa. No volia fer malabars entre la infermeria i la boxa. Jo no podria ser el millor en cap de les dues maneres.

"Tinc pensat convertir-me en professional perquè m'agrada molt la boxa. Necessito boxejar quan sóc jove. Arribaré tan lluny com pugui a la boxa i sempre tindré infermeria".

Darius Fulgham ha pres un camí tortuós a la vida des de la infermeria fins a la boxa. Valdrà la pena, encara que, si arriba a Tòquio com a part de l'equip dels EUA per al 2020 Jocs Olímpics.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Volta. (Febrer 20, 2020) - Des dels carrers dolents de l'est de Los Angeles fins a un lloc a l'equip dels EUA és un èxit notable per a pes mosca de 19 anys.Antoni Herrera, que recentment va ser seleccionat per ser membre de la 2020 Equip de classificació de boxa dels Jocs Olímpics de Tòquio.

“Des de molt jove,Herrera va parlar de créixer a l'est de Los Angeles, "Els meus pares sempre em van mantenir fent esport. Estar tan ocupat amb els esports era en realitat una distracció del que passava per la ciutat. Així que, Mai vaig tenir temps de ficar-me en problemes i els meus pares em van allunyar d'un mal estil de vida. Una vegada vaig començar a boxejar, M'ho vaig prendre seriosament, mantenir la concentració i establir objectius. Jo era una mica més gran en aquell moment i si volia o no participar en la boxa o si volia fer-ne una carrera, depenia de mi., i sempre vaig tenir tot el suport dels meus pares. La boxa ha estat una gran part de la meva vida. Sempre estic esperant el proper entrenament o qualsevol cosa relacionada amb la boxa. Forma part de la meva imatge en aquest moment".

Per ara, encara que, Herrera es prepara amb els seus companys als Jocs Olímpics dels Estats Units i al Centre d'entrenament paralímpic de Colorado Springs per al Torneig de Qualificació dels Estats Units., 26 de març-abril 3, a Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Herrera es classificarà per representar el seu país als Jocs Olímpics acabant entre els cinc primers a Buenos Aires, o els sis primers classificats del World Qualifier, Maig 13-14, a París, França.

"Jo crec sota pressió,Herrera va dir: "No deixo que la pressió m'arribi tant mentalment que afecti negativament el meu rendiment. Em fa millorar quan estic al ring. He estat sota pressió tota la meva carrera de boxa. No només m'ha convertit en un millor lluitador en determinades situacions que són intimidants, però també una persona més forta en general. Anar a l'Argentina no és diferent, els nervis encara hi són, però també ho és la meva determinació d'arribar a Tòquio".

La 2018 PAL nacional i 2019 Campió Western Elite Qualifier, Herrera ha acabat recentment segon a la 2020 U.S. Proves olímpiques per equips i tercera a la 2020 Torneig Strandja a Bulgària.

"L'èxit de boxa amateur del qual estic més orgullós és convertir l'equip de qualificació dels Estats Units com a pes mosca.,", va assenyalar. "Va ser difícil arribar fins aquí i saber que vaig superar els obstacles que em vaig enfrontar en aquest llarg viatge cap a on sóc ara em fa molt feliç. Puc dir de veritat que m'ho vaig guanyar..

“El meu primer partit de boxa internacional (La seva platja) era una mica diferent del que estic acostumat. L'equip que vam fer servir i lluitar sense casc creava més risc a l'hora de lluitar, però em vaig divertir en la meva primera lluita internacional. Ja tinc la sensació d'aquest entorn i ara estic més còmode.

“M'agrada molt entrenar a Colorado Springs amb els meus companys, perquè és una gran experiència que només aconsegueixen els millors atletes. També m'encanta entrenar a casa, però a Colorado Springs hi ha menys distraccions. Em concentro al 100% en el meu ofici i puc viatjar més".

Herrera, que descriu el seu estil com un "swarmer", aplicant pressió i trencant el seu oponent, està vivint el somni.

"Lluitar als Jocs Olímpics sempre va ser important per a mi, però aconseguir una medalla d'or és el meu somni,", va afegir. "Sempre ho he volgut perquè ningú no me'l pot treure mai, i la història i el treball que es posa darrere d'una medalla d'or no tenen preu. Al meu entendre, és més difícil que guanyar un títol mundial de boxa professional. Estar tan a prop dels Jocs Olímpics, Estic orgullós de mi mateix però no satisfet. Sé que encara tinc feina per fer i estic fent un pas a la vegada. El següent pas per a mi és classificar-me per als Jocs Olímpics a la qualificació olímpica".

Herrera atribueix part del seu èxit a l'aprenentatge dels boxejadors antics i contemporanis, implementant qualsevol tècnica que utilitzen en el seu estil, Incloent, per exemple, el joc de peus i el moviment del capJuli Cèsar Chavez Sr., iMike Tysonconfiguracions del cos al cap.

1988 El medallista d'or olímpic "Merciless" Ray Mercer fa una ullada a la seva experiència olímpica

COLORADO SPRINGS, Volta. (Febrer 11, 2020) – Trenta-dos anys després de conquerir una medalla d'or olímpica, "Despietat" Ray Mercer recorda amb afecte la seva experiència olímpica com si fos el mes passat. Mercer, que és l'únic campió nord-americà de pes pesat que elimina tots els seus oponents olímpics, es va convertir en campió mundial de pes pesat com a professional pel nostre "doble de pes pesat".

Per a Mercer, tot va començar a Alemanya, on els seus EUA. La unitat de l'exèrcit estava basada. Es va oferir l'oportunitat d'evitar un exercici de camp de 30 dies, Mercer va acceptar una oferta per servir com a soci de sparring per al campió de boxa de pes pesat del càrrec. Tot i no haver posat mai abans un parell de guants, Mercer era un aprenent ràpid i naturalment fort, i es va convertir ràpidament en el 1985 U.S. Campió de pes pesat de l'exèrcit i entre serveis.

El programa d'esportistes de classe mundial (WCAP), en què els atletes qualificats tenen l'oportunitat d'entrenar a temps complet per als Jocs Olímpics, no existia aleshores, ni les regles de classificació olímpica d'avui. Mercer va derrotar el futur campió mundial de pes pesatTommy Morrison a la ronda inicial de la 1988 Trials Olímpics i un altre futur campió mundial de pes pesat, Michael Bentt (5-0) a la final del campionat. ce a Las Vegas, Mercer va guanyar una decisió dividida (3-2) sobre Bentt, però Mercer ja s'havia classificat per lluitar als Jocs Olímpics en ser els EUA. Campió de les Forces Armades.

"Quan jo estava a l'exèrcit, Vaig haver de guanyar al servei, mantenir les coses, i aneu al següent pas," Va recordar Mercer. "Vaig haver de vèncer alguns bons lluitadors en el meu camí als Jocs Olímpics, i estava en la millor forma de la meva vida. Hi havia més disciplina als aficionats que als professionals. L'últim any abans dels Jocs Olímpics, Vaig deixar la meva unitat de casa, va viatjar molt per lluitar, i em vaig quedar a casa del meu entrenador en comptes de viure a la caserna.

Mercer va fer història al 1988 Jocs Olímpics a Seül, Corea del Sud, quan es va convertir i segueix sent l'únic campió olímpic de pes pesat dels Estats Units que va noquejar als quatre oponents:  Rudolf Gavenciak (Txecoslovàquia – RSC3), Luigi Gaudiano(Itàlia – KO1), Arnond Vasnderlyde (Països Baixos – RSC2) iBon Hyun Man (Corea del Sud - KO1).

"Sabia que havia d'eliminar a Corea del Sud a la final,Mercer va admetre: "Només volia fer el que podia per ser el medallista d'or olímpic. No crec que hagi fet servir un cop.

"Guanyar la medalla d'or olímpica va suposar alguns canvis importants per a mi. Em vaig convertir en una celebritat, un nom familiar, i em va permetre guanyar diners com a professional. El millor que em va passar mai va ser guanyar la medalla d'or olímpica, fins i tot més que guanyar el títol mundial com a professional. Res comparat amb convertir-se en un medallista d'or olímpic. Vaig complir el meu somni. Mai havia somiat amb ser professional, fins que vaig guanyar la medalla d'or.

"Va ser molt important guanyar aquesta medalla d'or. Vaig lluitar amb el cor; no hi havia diners implicats, celebrat amb tanta força aquella nit (després de guanyar la medalla d'or) que vaig perdre la meva medalla durant unes hores. El meu somni s'havia fet realitat, em tremolaven les mans, i vaig perdre la meva medalla. Quina nit!"

Mercer ofereix als membres de la 2020 Equip de qualificació olímpica de boxa dels EUA un consell, "Seguir lluitant, segueix el teu somni i fes aquest darrer pas".

Mercer, que va néixer a Jacksonville, Florida, va fer el seu molt esperat debut professional a 1989, paradaJesse McGhee en la tercera ronda de la seva lluita a Atlantic City. "Merciless" va guanyar el seu primer 18 baralles com a professional, inclòs un nocaut a la novena rondaFrancisco Damiani, seguit d'una defensa reeixida contra Morrison, que va ser aturat a la cinquena ronda.

Durant els seus 19 anys de carrera professional, Mercer va compilar a 36-7-1 (26 KOs) registre, derrotant quatre campions del món a Damiani, Morrison, Tim Witherspoon iOssie Ocasio.  Cinc de les vuit derrotes de la seva carrera van ser davant dels campions del món: Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko,Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield iShannon Briggs.

"La boxa em va salvar la vida,", va concloure Mercer. "No puc imaginar la meva vida sense boxa, segur que no seria el mateix.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Volta. (Febrer 10, 2020) – Sortint de subcampions consecutives en tornejos importants, EUA Boxa pes plomaAndrea Medina està a un torneig de representar el seu país als Jocs Olímpics de Tòquio 2020.

Al desembre, Medina, de 20 anys, va perdre una decisió divididaLupe Gutiérrez al 2020 U.S. Proves olímpiques per equips de boxa, i 4-1 aJúlia Tsyplakova (Ucraïna) el mes passat al Torneig Strandja de Bulgària. El Chula Vista, El boxejador de Califòrnia va ser nomenat recentment als Jocs Olímpics de Tòquio dels EUA Boxing 2020 Equip de qualificació de boxa.

"Col·locar segon a les proves només em va fer més ganes d'aconseguir aquest lloc de classificació olímpica,", va dir Medina. "Només volia mostrar a USA Boxing que jo era el que representava 57 quilograms. Només milloraré i no puc esperar per mostrar al món tot el que tinc.

A part de tot això, anar a un país diferent va ser fantàstic i no puc esperar per viatjar més fent el que més m'agrada".

Medina i els seus companys de l'equip dels EUA estan entrenant actualment a Colorado Springs al centre d'entrenament olímpic i paralímpic d'última generació dels Estats Units. Per classificar-se per participar als Jocs Olímpics d'enguany, Medina necessita acabar entre els tres primers en els 57 quilos (125 lliures.) divisió al Torneig de Qualificació d'Amèrica, 26 de març-abril 3, a Buenos Aires, Argentina. Una darrera oportunitat al World Qualifier a París, França, en què podria classificar-se per als Jocs Olímpics col·locant-se entre els cinc primers.

"Per mi significa el món estar a l'equip de qualificació olímpica de boxa dels EUA,", va afegir Medina. "És tot el que he estat treballant des que vaig començar a competir amb vuit anys i no em puc creure que els Jocs Olímpics siguin només en uns mesos. Fer història a San Diego sent la primera persona a formar part de l'equip olímpic de boxa és un gran problema per a la meva família, la meva ciutat i jo mateix. No puc expressar la il·lusió que estic d'haver arribat fins aquí, però encara queda molt per fer, i estic preparat.

"Sento que treballo millor sota pressió i realment crec que em classificaré per a Tòquio, ja sigui a l'Argentina o a França, però el meu objectiu principal, ara mateix, és entrenar dur per aconseguir aquest or a l'Argentina".

Medina creu que la seva principal fortalesa dins del ring és la seva capacitat d'ajustar-se durant una baralla. Prefereix lluitar a l'exterior, però pot barallar-se si cal, perquè li agrada llançar molts cops de força.

Medina també s'adona que està en un lloc privilegiat pel que fa a la creixent popularitat de la boxa femenina, seguint els passos de boxa dels Estats Units del doble medallista d'or olímpicClaressa Escuts i medalla de bronze olímpicaMarlen Esparza, juntament amb passats olímpics dels EUA com araLa reina Underwood iMikaela Mayer.

"La boxa femenina només augmentarà,", va predir Medina. "Ser lluitadora avui significa molt per a mi, perquè he estat fent això durant 15 anys, i veure-la créixer any rere any només demostra com de fortes són les femelles i què podem aconseguir. Ho predic, en el futur, la boxa no es veurà com un esport d'home, però serà neutral tant per a homes com per a dones".

Competir als Jocs Olímpics ha estat un somni de tota la vida per a Medina, però també té plans per al seu futur immediat.

“Assolir els Jocs Olímpics ha estat el meu principal objectiu al llarg de la meva carrera de boxa,", va remarcar l'Andrea, "Així que ara que està tan a prop em fa ganes de treballar encara més dur. Altres objectius meus són graduar-me a la universitat i aconseguir el meu propi condomini, que faré quan tot això hagi acabat.

"Tinc previst convertir-me en professional després dels Jocs Olímpics, molt probablement a principis o mitjans de 2021, així puc acabar l'escola i donar al meu cos una mica de descans i recuperació”.

Andrea Medina està tan a prop de ser olímpica i tot el que s'associa amb aquest èxit que pràcticament pot arribar i sentir-ho. Només un pas més, ja sigui a Buenos Aires o París, i serà una missió complerta per a ella.

Anuncia la boxa dels EUA 2020 Equip de classificació dels Jocs Olímpics de Tòquio

COLORADO SPRINGS, Volta. (Gener 29, 2020) — USA Boxing ha anunciat avui el 13 boxejadors que representaran l'equip dels EUA en la propera edició 2020 Esdeveniments de classificació de boxa dels Jocs Olímpics de Tòquio, així com la 13 alterna. A continuació es pot veure una llista completa.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Volta. (Desembre 19, 2019) – La classe de 2019 was inducted into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame this past Friday night at Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino a Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The HOF reception was held in conjunction with the 2020 U.S. Proves per equips olímpics de boxa i 2019 Campionats Nacionals. Hall of Fame broadcaster En Bernstein from Showtime Sports served once again as the event’s emcee.

Olympic gold-medalists Mark Breland i “Smokin'” Joe Frazier along with decorated coach A l'Mitchell and famed cut-man Ray Rodgers, were inducted during the 3rd annual USA Boxing Alumni Association HOF reception.

Sen. John McCain was posthumously presented a special Lifetime Achievement Award. His daughter, Megan McCain, sent an acceptance video on behalf of her family that was played for the audience.

“We are extremely thankful for the hundreds of USA Boxing Alumni who showed up to support this year’s Hall of Fame class and enjoy an incredible evening of reflection, camaraderie, and joy,” said USA Boxing Alumni Association Director Chris Cugliari. “Desafortunadament, George Foreman was unable to attend the event, so we will be sure to honor him at a later date. No obstant això, the legacies of Ray Rodgers, A l'Mitchell, Joe Frazier, Mark Breland, and Senator John McCain were celebrated with passion and gratitude. It was an evening to remember, and we look forward to a strong 2020 for the USA Boxing Alumni Association.”

MARK BRELAND

Mark Breland: “I enjoy boxing, it’s a lot of fun. I’m glad to be here because I’ve seen a lot of fighters I grew up with in the amateurs. I enjoy boxing because it kept me off the streets. I wasn’t a street guy., My father would have beaten me up if I had gotten into trouble in the streets. Boxing kept me off the streets, kept me in the gym. I guess I was good at it. I had a fight with a bully when I was 14 and I beat him up. I went to the gym the same day and my coach asked me what happened. My knuckles were shredded with blood. I told him I had a fight in the street. He said you can’t fight in the street. Then I realized boxing and street fighting are two different things.

Shelly Finkel (his manager), when he came into my life, changed a lot of things. Things changed a lot. I focused more on boxing, focused on the Olympic Games, and won championships. Every tournament I went into, Vaig guanyar, but it was a lot of fun. I wanted to inspire youths. I hope I can inspire some amateurs coming up. To keep going, stay off the streets, and do something that can change your life in a good way., Eddie Futch for life!”



JOE FRAZIER

Marvis Frazier(Joe’s son, foto): “It is so good today to speak about my father, what he meant to me, and Joe Frazier always said to me, ‘There’s no right way to do wrong, no wrong way to do right.’ Ell va dir, if you don’t do right, you’re going to smell this, putting his left fist right to my nose. When it was time for me to do bad, it wasn’t me, wasn’t Marvis Frazier. Així, avui, I’m still smelling it even if he’s not here.

“I just love to talk boxing. As an amateur I was 46-1 and then when I turned pro, I beat the guy who had knocked me out. I love my father. He was a good guy and a champion. I know everybody know Muhammad Ali and I know everybody know ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier.”



AL MITCHELL

A l'Mitchell: “I got rid of anybody over 16 who didn’t want to go to school. I’ve been doing this the longest time and I want to thank the coaches. I had three or four who didn’t care about boxing, but they wanted their kids to get an education. Izzy Acosta is one. I got a perfect record at Marquette High, they’ve all graduated. I have four kids with master’s degrees, I’ve got 14 who have degrees, and four guys who are policemen and no way they should be policemen. Estic beneït.

“Old coaches would tell one you’re only as good as your memories. It’s crazy with kids 14, 14, 15. I had a kid named Vernon Forrest, a four-time world champion., It’s not just about boxing. It’s getting an education and after ten years they have a good life. I want to thank you all for putting me in the Hall of Fame.”




Michael Rodgers (Ray’s son): “Primer, I want to apologize for my father for not being here. He hurt his back over the weekend working a boxing match, believe it or not, and he apologizes for not being here.

“I want to thank USA Boxing and the Alumni Association for recognizing my father for this award. And when he heard about this, he said he didn’t do any of these things during the 72 years he’s been in the sport for awards. He just did what he did for the love this sport and he did what needed to be done.”

Mike McAtee, Director executiu, EUA Boxa (foto): “On behalf of the Board of Directors, President Tyson Lee, I can only say thank you, gràcies, and thank you. “USA Boxing is proud of our history, but more proud of our future, and I can tell you the young men and women battling at the elite levels, we started at 104 and that will be taken down to 13 by Sunday evening. We’ve come a long way. Our theme in 2020 is two missions: Primer, we want to take this down to the grassroots level, second is supporting our athletes and their families as they travel to the 2020 Olympic Games.”



Al Valenti, Special Projects Consultant for USA Boxing: “USA Boxing is the one fundamental difference that makes a difference in a young person’s life. The path to self-confidence, the path to self-respect, disciplina, victòria, and how to accept defeat all comes through amateur boxing.

The HOF reception is being held in conjunction with the ongoing 2020 U.S. Proves per equips olímpics de boxa i 2019 National Championships at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The late Sen. McCain boxed at the U.S. Naval Academy, where the 5’ 7” lightweight competed three years as a fearless boxer who reportedly always came forward, never reversing gears. In his final year, he managed the battalion boxing team to a brigade championship.

“Our family believes our father would accept this award graciously as a very high honor,” daughterMegan McCain said on behalf of the McCain family. “The courage, character and action needed to step into the ring is something he felt very strongly about.

“He learned many life lessons through boxing, including the value of fitness, disciplina, individual performance training and operating as part of a team. Boxers run up against opposition they have no idea how to attack or defend against, yet they figure it out and learn about themselves, as well as develop endurance during the process.”

“I’m very happy to be inducted into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame,” Breland said. “It really means a lot, especially going in this year with Foreman and Frazier. I guess it proves I’ve done a lot in boxing. I’m happy to be going in. I had a lot of fun in USA Boxing. To be going into the same Hall of Fame withEvander (Holyfield) (Mahoma) Són, Foreman, Frazier…champs like that, it’s something for me to be with them.”

Breland, irònicament, first got into boxing at the age of eight, due to him being brought to his first boxing match, Frazier-Ali I, at Madison Square Garden. “We were up in the top seats,” the Brooklyn-born and raised Breland remembered like it was yesterday. “The crowd, the atmosphere…all I could think of was, vaja!  I didn’t realize until I got older that there were so many stars there watching Ali and Frazier, because they were all at ringside.

“The next day I went to a gym. I was really skinny, petit, but I came back the next day. I enjoyed working out and fell in love with boxing. I wanted to box in big tournaments. This is what I wanted to do, but I had hid boxing from my parents. They knew I had I played football, but that was okay with them, because unlike in boxing, we had a helmet. I won at the Junior Olympics and it was in the papers. I saw it and thought my mother was going to kill me. My mother asked me why I hadn’t told her, so I invited her to watch me fight in the Golden Gloves. She was in one of the front rows, but afterwards when I asked her what she thought when I knocked out my opponent, she said she didn’t see it because she had closed her eyes.”

Breland went on to become a five-time New York Golden Gloves champion with a 21-0 registre, Incloent 19 nocauts, 14 coming in the opening round. In 1982, Breland captured a gold medal at the prestigious World Championships in Munich, Alemanya, after which he was named the No. 1 welterweight in the world by AIBA. He was also selected as Boxer of the Year (1982) by USAABF.

Al 1984 Jocs Olímpics, held in Los Angeles, Breland fought his way to a gold medal,

along with eight of his American teammates: Paul Gonzalez, Steve McCrory, Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker, Jerry Page,Frank Tate, Henry Tillman iTyrell Biggs.

Breland, who completed his amateur career with an amazing 110-1 (73 KOs) registre, appeared to be cooler than the other side of the pillow on a hot, steamy night. No real celebrations after he won gold, to the contrary, Mark was emotionless, the same as he still is today as a trainer of champions.

“I’ve always been really laid back,” he explained. “I just remember raising my hands. At an Olympic press conference, I was asked if I was happy, and I just said I was glad it was over. I guess I didn’t seem excited. I was happy but calm. It’s the same way now (as a trainer); it’s just me. I’m happy to win and happy to be doing what I do.”

Breland made his much-anticipated pro debut November 15, 1984, at the famed Madison Square Garden, defeating Dwight Williams by way of a six-round unanimous decision. During his illustrious pro career (1984-1997), Breland compiled a sterling 35-3-1 (35 KOs) record and he was a two-time World welterweight champion.

The 56-year-old Breland, who once trained the late, gran 1992 olímpic dels EUAVernon Forrest, currently trains another great USA Boxing alumni and 2008 Medallista de bronze olímpic, Deontay Wilder, the reigning World Boxing Council heavyweight champion.

“Once I started boxing in the amateurs,” Breland concluded, “I started progressing. I learned a lot from other amateurs like different styles. Boxers from New York/New Jersey had different styles than boxers from Georgia/Florida, and fighting Cubans was completely different. Men’s Field for 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing Set

COLORADO SPRINGS, Volta. (Novembre 26, 2019) – Sixty-four of the nation’s top male amateur boxers will compete at the upcoming 2020 U.S. Proves olímpiques per equips de boxa a Lake Charles, Louisiana, Desembre 9-16.

Flyweight/114 lbs./52 kg

The flyweight division will feature multiple exciting matchups, as all eight boxers will be looking to represent Team USA next year and follow in 2016 Olympic bronze medalists Nico Hernandez’ footsteps. 2019 World Championships team member and 2018 Elite National ChampionMichael Angeletti (Primavera, Texas) has hopes of using his great deal of international experience he gained this year to lead the pack, while two-time flyweight national champion (’16 and ’17) Fernando Martinez (Fènix, Ariz.) will want to return to the top of the podium. 2018 Elite National Championships runner-upAbraham Pérez (Albuquerque, N.m) has hopes of redemption to take the title. YoungsterRay Ray Robinson(Cincinnati, Ohio) punched his ticket to Lake Charles by winning the Eastern Elite Qualifier in his home state and his elite debut, iJose Nieves (Avenel, N. J.) grabbed the title at the Last Chance Qualifier in Oxnard over an impressive field.Roscoe Hill is the second boxer from Spring, Texas to qualify in this division following his silver medal-effort at the Western Elite Qualifier in Reno. Los Angeles duoAntoni Herrera iAnthony Olascuaga round out the field. Herrera was victorious in Reno and Olascuaga finished second in Oxnard.

Bantamweight/125 lbs./57 kg

Arguably the deepest male division at the trials, the competition for the top two spots will be one of the toughest and most exciting of the week. 2019 Pan American Games and World Championships silver medalistKeyshawn Davis(Norfolk, Va.) has dominated on the national stage the previous two years, and will hope to continue his run, but will have stiff competition from the other seven boxers in this bracket. 2018 USA Boxing Elite National Championships silver medalistsDalin Limiopapu(Waiana, Hawaii) will be looking for redemption after his close bout in the finals last year against Davis. 2015 Junior World Championships silver medalistsHarley Mederos (Nova York, N.Y) hopes to repeat his impressive performance from the 2019 Qualificador d’elit oriental, mentre 2019 Western Elite Qualifier ChampionCharlie Sheehy (Brisbane, Qualif.) looks to return to the USA Boxing High Performance squad after being a member in 2018. 2019 Last Chance Qualifier ChampionErnesto Mercado (Pomona, Qualif.) made the transition to the elite division easily after dominating throughout this year on the youth stage, including an international gold medal in March.Israel Rodriguez (Humil, Texas) surprised many when he took the second spot at the 2019 Classificació de l'Est, which will be a huge confidence booster in Lake Charles, iMarcell Davidson (Shawnee, Maig.) has the goods to reach the finals. Lavars Carter (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned the final spot, and could see a potential third matchup against Johnson, as they met in Salt Lake last year and the finals of the Last Chance Qualifier, with Carter winning in Salt Lake and Johnson in Oxnard.Wayne Bourdreaux (Marrero, La.) will be looking for a strong performance, as he is one of the few Louisiana natives in the field, iMorris Young (Chesaning, Mich.) will be hoping to improve on his silver medal performance in Reno.

Expected to be another weight division with exciting matchups, the middleweight division has the potential to see a fourth finals matchup between 2019 Pan American Games bronze medalisttroy Isley (Alexandra, Va.) i 2018 Elite National ChampionJavier Martínez(Milwaukee, Wisc.). Isley took the national title in 2016 i 2017 over Martinez, while Martinez was victorious in 2018. (Novembre 25, 2019) – Arkansas boxing icon Ray Rodgershas successfully dealt with more cuts than most surgeons, all the way into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame, in which he’ll be inducted on Friday night, Desembre 13, during a special Class of 2019 ceremony, a l'hotel Golden Nugget & Casino a Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The HOF reception is being held in conjunction with the 2020 U.S. Proves per equips olímpics de boxa i 2019 Campionats Nacionals, Desembre. 7-15, at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The finals of the Olympic Trials will be held Sunday, Desembre. 15, a l'hotel Golden Nugget & Casino. Hall of Fame broadcaster En Bernstein from Showtime Sports will serve as the event’s emcee for the third year in a row.

The USA Boxing Alumni Association’s third HOF class also includes three Olympic gold-medalists, “Gran” George Foreman, “Smokin'” Joe Frazier i Mark Breland, as well as legendary coach A l'Mitchell.

Sen. John McCain will be posthumously presented a special Lifetime Achievement Award for his tireless work to protect boxers and elevate the sport.

His parents gave their permission to let him tryout, the first chapter of his incredible boxing career.

“From the first moment,” the charming boxing character remembered, “Em vaig enganxar. I still have the letter I received in boxing. That was in 1947 and I’m still in boxing. I’m very proud of that.”

Rodgers has worked 39 world championship fights in professional boxing, as a cut man (he only trains amateur boxers) for the likes of world champions Jermaine Taylor, Wayne McCollough i Tommy Morrison.

“It’s been beyond belief for a regular old boxing guy like me,” Rodgers said about his life in boxing. “I’ve traveled all over the world, many times, as a cut man.”

He was the first national official of both the Golden Gloves and Silver Gloves. Més, he’s already been inducted in three Hall of Fames: Guants de plata, Golden Gloves and Arkansas Sports HOF.

And he’s also the vice-president of the National Golden Gloves and chairman of the National Silver Gloves.
