Today marks the 36th anniversary of the epic middleweight championship battle between Hagler and Hearns. Long considered the high-water mark of the Four Kings era, Hagler-Hearns stands out for the drama and brutal non-stop action that was compressed into just over eight minutes from start to finish. Following a brief fallow period in the wake of Ali’s retirement, boxing was revitalized when Leonard became a world champion in 1979 and waged his first battle with Durán in 1980. From that point, the Four Kings engaged in a decade-long run of riveting fights that far outperformed any other sport in attention and revenue. They were the most popular stars of sports and American culture.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Ronde. (Juni 4, 2020) - Zoals veel boksers, twee-divisie wereldkampioen "El Gallo" Jose Antonio Rivera credits boksen voor het redden van zijn leven.
"Absoluut,'Rivera was het daarmee eens. JOE MESI: “Ik heb zoveel mensen te danken voor deze eer. Ik ben een Buffaloniaan. Er is niemand meer voor één New York, maar dat is het niet. Dit is speciaal voor mij omdat het de New York State Boxing Hall of Fame is. Dit stolt me en doet me denken dat ik niet zomaar een lokale jongen ben. Er was een enorm nadeel van een kleine stad, sparren was niet hetzelfde als in de sportscholen van New York City, maar ik had een voordeel vanuit West-New York. Niemand deed het zo goed als in Buffalo 10,000, vervolgens 16,00 en tenslotte 18,000 mensen. Ze stonden altijd achter me en ik deel dit met hen omdat hun steun mij heeft gemaakt. Mijn droom was om in Buffalo te vechten en daar te blijven vechten.
“Een van de hoogtepunten van mijn leven was de strijd tegen Monte Barrett op HBO in Madison Square Garden. Hij was een van de grootste vechters ter wereld die streed voor de wereldtitel. Ik heb altijd al mijn wereldtitel willen behalen, maar ik heb het nooit gekregen. Dat is goed, Ik was een tijdje een beetje bitter, maar ik zou niet gelukkiger kunnen zijn met mijn carrière. Het beste van boksen is de broederschap die we delen.

RON SCOTT STEVENS: “Ik weet dat mensen het altijd zeggen, maar dit is de waarheid: Ik ben zoveel mensen verschuldigd die me gedurende mijn hele carrière hebben gesteund. Boksen is voor mij altijd een thuis weg van huis geweest en vandaag voel ik me alsof ik thuis ben.
“Ik was 30, woonachtig in Brooklyn Heights, en terug een taxi rijden en wachten op tafels. Er ging een licht uit in mijn hoofd: boksen is de sport van de underdog en ik ben een underdog. De volgende dag ging ik naar Gleason's Gym – het centrum van het universum. Ik liep door alle sportscholen in de stad, ontmoetingspromotoren, managers en trainers. Ik begon wedstrijden te maken voor promotors en toen nam Cedric Kushner me in dienst 1980-2002. In 2002, Ik kreeg een telefoontje om voor de New York State Athletic Commission te werken als haar Community Co-ordinator en Director of Boxing. Vervolgens, Ik werd voorzitter en diende twee termijnen. Vandaag, Ik ben buitengewoon trots om deel uit te maken van de New York State Boxing Hall of Fame.

NAAR SCHOOL: “Ik dacht dat boksen de stomste en domste sport ooit was. Die wilde in het gezicht geslagen worden? Ik begon laat met boksen. Ik speelde wat rond en mensen zeiden dat ik best goed was. Ik begon met boksen toen ik dat was 20, in het leger, gestationeerd op Ft. Kap. Vier jaar later, Ik zat in het Olympisch team. De reden hiervoor is dat ik een geweldige sparringpartner had, Ray Mercer. Als ik elke dag met Ray in de ring zou zijn, Ik zou óf in elkaar geslagen worden, of word beter.
“Ik herinner me dat Bob Arum me zijn visitekaartje gaf. Ik kende hem niet. Ik kende maar drie mensen in het boksen: Don King, Muhammad Ali en Sugar Ray Leonard. Ik volgde boksen niet en de enige reden dat ik bokste, was dat ik in het bos had moeten slapen als ik dat niet deed (in het leger). Boksen is: sla hem, voordat hij me slaat.”

PETE BRODSKY: “Ik wil het bestuur bedanken. Ik ga zijn 70 en begon met boksen toen ik dat was 18. Het creëerde een nieuwe richting in mijn leven. Ik ben zo trots om in gezelschap te zijn van jongens die er niet alleen over praatten, Ze vonden het geweldig. Als je echt van deze sport houdt, je moet het echt leren. Elke man die in de ring stapte, plus al het wegwerk, tijd in de sportschool en opofferen wat ze eten, deden het om zo goed mogelijk te zijn.
“in het boksen, je gaat niet elk gevecht winnen, maar of een vechter wint of verliest, als hij 100 procent geeft, hij is een winnaar. Ze hebben een baan, ren vijf mijl per dag, trainen in de sportschool, en ging toen naar huis om tijd door te brengen met zijn gezin. Vrienden en familie staan altijd voor u klaar.”

MELVINA LATHAM: “Ik ben sprakeloos. Het is fantastisch. Randy (voormalig NYSAC-voorzitter Gordon), herinner je je dit verhaal nog? Er waren slechts drie rechters en, jammer genoeg, één meldde zich ziek. Ik zat op de eerste rang zonder verantwoordelijkheden. Randy zei dat ik moest werkenvanavond. Ik zei dat ik geen vergunning had en dat ik het ook niet kon. Zei Randy, 'Doe je rechter hand omhoog', en het was aan. Ik werd erin gegooid, maar het was oké.
“Mijn grootste prestaties zijn mijn kinderen en echtgenoot. Ik kon geen betere situatie vragen. En Ralph Petrillo maakt deel uit van mijn familie; hij was mijn tweede in bevel. Ik had ook de beste ambtenaren: plaatsvervangende commissarissen, inspecteurs, rechters en scheidsrechters. Zonder hen zou ik hier niet zijn. Bob Duffy heeft dit allemaal in elkaar gezet. Persoonlijk vind ik hem geweldig. Mijn reis gaat verder, Ik ben gezegend.”

OVER RING 8: Gevormd in 1954 door een ex-bokser, Jack Grebelsky, Ring 8 werd de achtste dochteronderneming van wat toen bekend als het Nationaal Veteraan Boxers Association – vandaar, RING 8 – en vandaag het motto van de organisatie blijft: Boxers Helpen Boxers.

NEW YORK (Maart 26, 2018) – Boksen lifers Bob Goodman en zijn vader, wijlen Murray Goodman, behoren tot 23 leden van de Klasse van 2018 wordt opgenomen in de New York State Boxing Hall of Fame (NYSBHOF) op Zondag middag (12:30-5:30 p.m. EN), April 29.
Het zevende jaarlijkse NYSBHOF-inductiediner wordt opnieuw gehouden in Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, New York.
Een legendarische bokspublicist, Murray Goodman (Bronx) bracht zijn zoon in de zoete wetenschap toen Bob nog maar acht jaar oud was. De rest was historisch voor de Goodmans, die beide inductees zijn in verschillende Halls of Fame, waaronder de International Boxing Hall of Fame.
“Dit is een grote eer voor mij en mijn vader,” Zei Bob. “Ik wou dat hij vandaag nog leefde om daar te zijn. Ik ben een bokser. Ik was acht jaar en ging met mijn vader naar alle trainingskampen, die boksschrijver en sportredacteur was voor de INS (Hearst News Service) service. De grap is dat ik bij Grossinger werd verwekt (Trainingskamp Catskill Resort Hotel). Boksen kwam net in mijn leven. “Ik ben de gelukkigste man ter wereld. Ik ben opgegroeid met de dingen waar ik van hield. Hoeveel mensen kunnen dat zeggen? Ik ontmoette en raakte bevriend met Joe Louis, Marcel Cerdan, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Graziano, Rocky Marciano en zo veel anderen. Ik zou weken in kampen blijven. Ik zou opstaan om met de boksers te rennen en de kans krijgen om bij mijn helden te zijn. Ik leerde ook trainers en anderen in het boksen kennen en later fans. Ik heb iedereen leren kennen. Ik ben opgegroeid met boksen, mijn hele leven was boksen, 65 jaar in het vak.”
Bob is, misschien, vooral bekend als Vice President en Matchmaker voor Madison Square Garden (1985-1994), evenals een kwart eeuw als Vice President Boxing Operations, Matchmaker en directeur Public Relations voor Don King Productions. Hij promootte ook vele wereldkampioenen als president van zijn eigen bedrijf, Garden State Boksen.
“Ik herinner me dat ik weken achtereen naar trainingskampen ging,” herinnerde de 78-jarige Goodman zich liefdevol. “Ik zou foto's maken, schrijf elke dag verhalen en gebruik mijn telecopier om ze naar AP en UPI te sturen. Ik heb zoveel gedaan in mijn opvoeding, zelfs vrachtwagens met stoelen laden, de ring, luidsprekers en meer. Mijn vader was de publiciteitsdirecteur van de International Boxing Club in Madison Square Garden. Ik werkte daar toen ik een tiener was.
“Ik vind het een eer om met mijn vader en zoveel boksers te worden opgenomen in de New York State Boxing Hall of Fame. Ze zijn anders dan mensen in andere sporten. Een van de prijzen die ik heb gewonnen en waar ik het meest trots op ben, is de James J. Walker Memorial Award voor lange en verdienstelijke dienst aan het boksen (BWAA in 1960).
“Ik heb het geluk verschillende tijdperken in het boksen te hebben overstegen. Het was toen een andere wereld, wij hadden 20-30 schrijvers blijven wekenlang op trainingskampen. Ik leerde oude boksers en trainers kennen.”

The broadcast earned a 2.2 rating from9 p.m. - 11:15 p.m. EN, omhoog 22% over the previous June 25, 2016 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS broadcast featuring Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter (1.8 rating).
