Diplômé de l'Université Brown, Sammartino, maintenant âgé de 80 ans, a connu deux autres carrières en tant que chirurgien buccal et conseiller en investissement chez Blue Fin à Providence, en plus de son rôle de juge de boxe international depuis 1985.
“J'ai commencé la boxe parce que Joey Angelo épousé ma cousine,” Sammartino a expliqué. “Il a riposté au début des années quarante. Joey a combattu Willie Pep deux fois et Sandy Saddler.
