LeAnna Cruz, Asa Stevens en Javier Zamarron blijven ongeslagen in Atlanta; Shamara Woods schittert in de Dominicaanse Republiek

Vrijdagavond in Atlanta, LeAnna Cruz bleef ongeslagen met een unaniem besluit van zes ronden over Maryguenn Vellinga in een vlieggewichtgevecht.

Cruz landde 88 van 271 stoten. Vellinga was 34 van 224.

Kruis, 111.6 pond van Allentown, PA gewonnen door scores van 60-54 op alle kaarten en is 6-0. Vellinga, 111.2 pond van Park City, UT is 4-4-2.

Asa Stevens bleef ongeslagen met een split-decision van vier ronden over D'Angelo Hopgood in een superbantamgewichtgevecht.

Stevens, 121.7 pond Waianae, HI won met scores van 40-36, 39-37 en Hopgood nam een kaart 39-37.

Stevens landde 66 van 205 stoten. Hopgood was 67 van. 273.

Stevens is 5-0. Hopgoed, 121.2 pond Milwaukee is 2-2-1.

Javier Zamarron bleef ongeslagen met een unaniem besluit in vier ronden over Sabastian Santiago in een vedergewicht gevecht.

In ronde één, Zamarron liet Santiago vallen met een perfecte counter links tegen het hoofd.

In de vierde ronde, Zamarron met snee rond het rechteroog,
Zamarron landde 87 van 265 stoten. Santiago was 52 van 307.

Zamarron, 128.2 pond van Milwaukee gewonnen met scores van 40-35 op alle kaarten en is nu 5-0. Santiago, 128.4 pond Cidra, PR is 0-2.

In de Dominicaanse Republiek, de nieuwe Split-T-ondertekenaar Shamara Woods nam in vier ronden een unaniem besluit over Rocio De Leon Query. Bossen van Allentown, PA is nu 3-0.

Woods komt meteen weer in actie terwijl ze op 20 september in Plant City zal vechten op een Probox TV-kaart, Florida.

Garcia and Stevens Close Out 2018 Youth World Championships with Wins

Team USA leaving Budapest with 4 medals

BOEDAPEST, Hongarije (Augustus 31, 2018) — The final day of the 2018 Wereldkampioenschappen jeugd in Boedapest, Hungary was another golden day for Team USA, as both Heaven Garcia (Mt., Calif.) en Asa Stevens (Waianae, Hawaii) won the female and male flyweight titles..

Stevens began the final day of boxing in the first bout against 2018 European Champion Ivan Price of England. Leading up to this showdown, Stevens and the USA Boxing coaching staff worked on a plan that would result in victory.

“The past three days we were creating a game plan of keeping distance and doing a lot of faints,” said Stevens after his gold medal performance. “I feel like we utilized it very well and that is how I got the win.”

The flyweight boxed a total of five times through the 11-day tournament, which included a split decision win over Patrick Clancy (Ierland), unanimous decision wins over Ibrahim Boukedim (Frankrijk) and Samandar Kholmurodov (Oezbekistan), as well as a split decision win over Bhavesh Kattimani (India) in de halve finale. His unanimous decision victory today over Price earned him his first World Championship title and the first youth flyweight title since Shakur Stevenson in 2014.

“This means a lot, no words can really explain how I feel,” stated Stevens. “This is the best feeling in the world.”

Garcia picked up her second World Championships title to add to her 2015 Junior World Championship title with her 4-1 split decision victory over India’s Anamika.

“My game plan was to use my jab and use that as a key,”Zei Garcia. “I wanted to also work in the body shots and wear her down with those and plenty of combinations.”

Like her teammate, Garcia boxed a total of five days in a grueling bracket that included three bouts in a row. Her victories included a split decision over Hatice Akbas (kalkoen) in de openingsronde, unanimous decision wins over Rinka Kinoshita (Japan) and Simran Kaur (Engeland), as well as her rematch with Zhanssaya Abdaimova (Kazachstan) by split decision in the semifinals.

Garcia’s win today adds her to a list of female American boxers that have won multiple amateur world titles that includes JaJaira Gonzalez and Claressa Shields. Garcia is the first American to win both a junior and youth world title since Gonzalez did so in 2013 en 2014/2015. Garcia will also look to join Gonzalez in the record books with a win at this October’s Youth Olympics.

“This win feels great because it was harder than my first title in 2015,” continued Garcia. “Everyone is older and more experienced at this level, and I worked very hard to get to the top spot.”

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Augie Sanchez (Las Vegas, Nev.), Team USA’s Head National Junior and Youth Coach, was awarded Best Coach of the Tournament honors, terwijl Isamary Aquino (Universal City, Texas) was awarded her bronze medal during the medal ceremonies.

“I am very happy with the team,” said Sanchez at the end of the competition. “It was the whole staff that made this happen, and I am happy how our team performed overall.”

Team USA will begin their return home tomorrow with a total of three gold medals and one bronze after ten intense days of boxing. This year’s tournament brought over 350 boksers uit meer dan 50 countries from around the World. Joining Sanchez in the boxers corners throughout the tournament were assistant coaches Timothy terug (Cincinnati, Ohio), Eliza Olson (Redwood, Calif.) en Rosario Solis (Irving, Texas).

Isamary Aqunio wint brons

BOEDAPEST, Hongarije (Augustus 28, 2018) – Op de achtste wedstrijddag op de 2018 Wereldkampioenschappen jeugd in Boedapest, Hongarije, Team USA schoof drie boksers op naar de kampioenschappen, terwijl Isamary Aquino(Universal City, Texas) pakte haar tweede bronzen medaille voor het Wereldkampioenschap Jeugd.

Vlieggewicht Asa Stevens (Waianea, Hawaii) begon de Amerikanen op een winnende noot met een 3-2 winnen Bhavesh Kattimani van India om door te gaan naar het kampioenschap. Stevens wil de eerste wereldkampioen vlieggewicht jeugd voor Team USA worden sinds Shakur Stevenson won 2014 wanneer hij vrijdag de ring in stapt tegen de Engelse Ivan Price, de 2018 Europees kampioen.

2015 Junior Wereldkampioen Heaven Garcia (Mt., Calif.) wraakte haar kwartfinale verlies tegen Zhansaya Abdraimova van Kazachstan op de Jeugd Wereldkampioenschappen vorig jaar door de herkansing te nemen met een 3-2 beslissing. Garcia zal zich bij Stevens voegen op de tweede finaledag, terwijl ze Anamika Urang uit India zal ontmoeten, de 2018 Zilveren medaillewinnaar van de Aziatische Confederatie.

De derde Amerikaan die doorgaat naar de finale, Iyana Verduzco (Los Angeles, Calif.), zette haar indrukwekkende WK-debuut voort met een 4-1 overwinning op Aycan Guldgai van Turkije. Verduzco zal het eerste lid van Team USA zijn dat bokst in de finale, zoals ze Aizada Yeslyamgali zal opnemen, de 2018 Zilveren medaillewinnaar van de Aziatische Confederatie, op donderdag.

Aqunio, het laatste lid van Team USA dat bokst in de halve finales, slaagde er niet in om door te gaan naar de kampioenschappen tegen Sakshi uit India. Dit is de tweede bronzen medaille voor Aquino's jeugdwereldkampioenschappen, nadat hij vorig jaar het brons mee naar huis had genomen op de jeugdwereldkampioenschappen.

Team USA verlaat deze Wereldkampioenschappen met in totaal vier medailles en stond onder leiding van de Nationale Junior- en Jeugdcoach Augie Sanchez(Las Vegas, Nev.) tijdens dit toernooi, met Timothy terug (Cincinnati, Ohio), Eliza Olson (Redwood, Calif.) en Rosario Solis (Irving, Texas) dienen als assistent-coaches.
