COLORADO SPRINGS, Ronde. (November 14, 2022) – Georgia flyweight Sa’Rai “Warrior Princess” Brown-El is on a sensational run as she prepares to compete in the upcoming Youth World Championships, November 14-26, in La Nucia, Spanje.
The 17-year-old from Marietta is a three-time National Junior Olympic champion (2017-19) who has also captured gold medals at the 2021 USA Boxing Youth National Championships, 2020 USA Boxing Junior National Championships, 2019 Junior Open and 2019 Nationale PAL, among the many titles she owns.
She got into boxing at the age of 8 in Albany, New York, where her family was visiting, eventually leading them all to her uncle’s gym. Her father originally wanted her brothers to box, but Sa’Rai also wanted to get involved in combat sports. It was a natural transition for her, who is a legacy boxer because her father, mother and brothers have all boxed.
“Me and my mom went to find a pair of gloves after we were told there weren’t any left. I started hitting the bag and then I did mitts with my uncle. That’s where I fell in love with the sport and discovered I was naturally born to do this.”
She has excelled in every area on her remarkable roll, which she will attempt to extend at the Youth World Championships over the next two weeks.
“I am super pumped and ready to go to Spain for the Youth Worlds,” the ultra-confident Sa’Rai said. “My mindset is on gold. My manifestation and hard work will put me in top by the last day with the gold medal around my neck on that number one podium. It’s truly a blessing to be representing the USA.
“My biggest challenge is probably myself; boxing is 90-percent mental, meaning I have to have a mindset that nothing can be hard enough to stop me from reaching my goals. My short-range goals, nu, are to win the Youth Worlds and finish out the year making the Youth High Performance Team. Long range, I’d say, is to fight in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Being world champ, looked up to as an inspiration to all and, belangrijker, having proven to be the most feared female boxer.”

(November 10, 2022) – As talented featherweight Cornellio “Chada” Phipps prepares for the upcoming Youth World Championships, he admits to living the dream, and before he turns pro in a few years, the Olympic-style boxing plan for him is medaling in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The 17-year-old Phipps, who fights out of Oxford, Pa., first got into boxing four years ago on the advice of his father. Phipps played basketball and football, but he didn’t feel either of those were his true spot. He actually fell in love with boxing while watching fights before he even boxed, when he was seven.
“I tell people to never give up their dreams, to keep punching, and never let anybody doubt you,” Phipps said. “This feels good (preparing for the Youth Worlds). I never thought I’d get to this stage. It’s been tough but fun. I’m on Team USA representing my country.
“It starts on the big stage by me medaling at the Youth Worlds (November 14-26, in La Nucia, Spanje). Being on Team USA has made a big difference for me. I’ve learned how to box against different moves, understanding the points system, and how to win. Training in Colorado Springs has helped me to succeed and also have fun learning from my new coaches.”
Phipps has already tasted success prior to the Youth Worlds. He has captured gold medals at the 2022 USA Boxing National Qualifier, 2021 USA Boxing Youth National Championships, alsmede de 2020 en 2019 Junior Nationale Kampioenschappen.

USA Boxing National Developmental Coach Chad Wigle (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will lead the team in Spain, with assistant coaches Gilberto Garza (San Antonio, Texas), Blanca Gutierrez (Pacifica, Calif.), Elizabeth Navarro (Mission, Texas) and Richard Stephenson (Middletown, N.Y.), as well as USA Boxing Strength and Conditioning Fellow Gillian Brennan (Overland Park, Mei.). Additional staff traveling with the team include USA Boxing High Performance Coordinator Morgan Bergquist (Colorado Springs, Colo.), USA Boxing Communications Manager Brian Taylor (Whiteville, N.C.) and Dr. Ingrid Carter (Doral, Fla.), who will serve as the Team Physician during these championships.
These Youth World Championships will be the first Youth World Championships attended by Team USA since 2018, where the team won three gold and one bronze medals. The Official Draw will take place on Monday, November. 14, with competition set to begin on Tuesday, November. 15. The weekend celebration will begin with a meet and greet gathering on Saturday, April 23 at Masthead Brewing Company. (COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) – When the boxers of the USA Boxing Olympic Qualification Team arrived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. this week they walked into a new training facility with just over six months left until the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and even less time to their qualification tournaments.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, USA Boxing athletes have not been allowed to train in the national boxing gym at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center (USOPTC) since March 2020 and have had to continue to make adjustments to their training plans, which included training at the French National Training Center in Paris in late 2020.
After being told they would not be allowed to begin 2021 at the USOPTC, the coaching and national office staff had to find a new home to begin the final preparations for the qualification tournaments taking place in May and June.
“After spending most of 2020 waiting to be allowed entry back into our national gym at the Colorado Springs OPTC, it was time that we took matters into our own hands and established a training space that can properly accommodate our team’s training needs,” said Matt Johnson, USA Boxing High Performance Director.
USA Boxing ended 2020 and the beginning of 2021 moving all equipment, which included four boxing rings, numerous heavy bags and strength and conditioning equipment, from their gym at the USOPTC to an abandoned department store in a mall in Colorado Springs to hold training camps, while housing the boxers and coaching staff at the nearby Hotel Eleganté.
“We are able to continue to move forward in this COVID environment by applying multi-layer protection protocols, pre-travel testing, mandatory mask wearing, social distancing, regular cleaning, regular rapid antigen testing, daily health surveys and follow up PRC pool testing, as well as provide a top notch training facility in our temporary facility, which we are greatly thankful for John Bushman, owner of Hotel Eleganté and the training facility, to help provide these opportunities to our boxers,” stated Mike McAtee, USA Boxing Executive Director.
“The training facility and environment we have created has greatly reduced the risk to our boxers and coaches. The first training camp of 2021 began Jan. 14 and will run until Feb. 18, before the boxers head to Bulgaria and Spain for international competitions. USA Boxing will hold the final training camp before the America’s Olympic Qualification Tournament at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, in Chula Vista, Calif., in another makeshift boxing gym, which held the final training camp of 2020 in november.
Olympian Raul Marquez over USA Boxing Alumni’s 1992 Virtuele reünie van US Trials
COLORADO SPRINGS, Ronde. (November 24, 2020) – USA Boxing en de USA Boxing Alumni Association hielden onlangs een virtuele reünie via Zoom voor deelnemers aan de 1992 Boxing Trials in de VS., inclusief een paar 1992 Olympiërs uit de VS., Raul Marquez en Montell Griffin. De groep bestond uit 19 vechters die deelnamen aan de 1992 Olympische proeven in de VS., plus een paar beheerders, die een uurtje vrolijk non-stop spraken en 45 notulen. Ze haalden vrolijk herinneringen op, gedeelde persoonlijke updates uit het verleden 22 jaar, herinnerde zich hun meest memorabele ervaringen als amateurboksers, en werden soms zelfs emotioneel toen ze terugkaatsten.
Sommigen hebben contact gehouden via e-mails en sociale media, maar het zichtbaar zien van elkaar tijdens de Zoom-oproep was eye-opening voor deze ringbroers. “Jullie maken allemaal deel uit van USA Boxing,” zei call host Mike McAtee, Uitvoerend directeur van USA Boxing. “Hector Colon en Raul Marquez kregen hun broers bij dit gesprek. Het was een natuurlijke pasvorm. We hebben 13 kinderen maken zich klaar om zich in mei te kwalificeren voor de Olympische Spelen. VS Boksen raakt aan 36,000 kinderen elke dag. Het veranderde ons leven, en we kunnen een impact hebben door levens te redden. “Het is een eer jullie allemaal te zien. Jij bent de ruggengraat van USA Boxing. Boksen heeft ons gemaakt tot wie we zijn, je hebt boksers geïnspireerd. Dit had lang moeten duren, en we zijn van plan om in de toekomst reünies te houden met andere Olympic Trials-klassen.”
“Dit is erg gaaf om iedereen te zien en ik luister graag naar je,” toegevoegd Chris Tofflemire, USA Boxing Alumni Association Director. “Jullie helpen allemaal om de geest terug te brengen naar USA Boxing Alumni. Boksers vinden het heerlijk om in de buurt van boksers te zijn, en dat is waar het bij de USA Boxing Alumni Association om draait. We brengen die geest terug. Ik vind het geweldig om jullie te hebben in ons alumniprogramma. Dit was geweldig!”
“Ik ben niet echt een bokser, maar ik ben blij deel uit te maken van dit boksprogramma,” becommentarieerde Barry Siff, Vrijwilligersmarketingadviseur VS Boksen. “Ik ben in de jaren tachtig in Detroit opgegroeid en heb rondgehangen bij Kronk (Sportschool). Ik ben blij dat ik deel kan nemen aan dit gesprek. We moeten Mike en het team allemaal helpen om verder te gaan. Wacht niet tot 2028 in Los Angeles. We hebben volgend jaar Tokio en Parijs 2024. Kinderen kunnen van je leren. Ik ben blij deel uit te maken van USA Boxing.”

HECTOR COLON: “ik hou van jullie. Het is zo lang geleden. Ik hoop dat we vaker op deze manier kunnen communiceren. We hebben jullie allemaal nodig om USA Boxing en USA Boxing Alumni te steunen. Mijn eerste internationale gevecht was in Barbados en ik sloeg mijn tegenstander knock-out 26 seconden. Ik herinner me dat ik de Adidas-tas en -schoenen ontving. Het was zoiets bijzonders. Ik droomde ervan om de Olympische Spelen te halen en dat had ik ook moeten doen, maar ik merkte dat God me weg riep van de sport. Ik was trots om naar je te kijken en ik heb voor je geworteld. “Het is geweldig om terug te zijn in Boksen in de VS en terug te geven aan Boksen in de VS., omdat het me heeft geholpen om de persoon te worden die ik nu ben. Ik had de verkeerde kant op kunnen gaan. Laten we dit nog een keer doen en terug blijven geven aan onze sporten.”
RAUL MARQUEZ: “Ik ben erg opgewonden om hier te zijn. Ik voel me vereerd en ik ben waarschijnlijk de enige hier die met de meeste jongens hier heeft gevochten. Ik heb veel herinneringen. Ik ben vereerd hier bij jou te zijn, mijn boksfamilie. Het is mooi. “Iedereen hier weet hoe moeilijk het is om een toernooi te winnen. We weten wat ervoor nodig is, want we waren allemaal elite. We moeten teruggeven. Ik ben nog steeds bezig met boksen.”
ORLANDO HARRIS: “Ik heb de beste tijd gehad in Boxing in de VS.. Ik ben laat begonnen. Ik heb een keer gevochten voordat ik in het leger ging. Ik werd beter en leerde vechten in het leger. Ik moest wel omdat ik goed moest doen of terug moest naar mijn eenheid. In ’04 Ik kreeg een auto-ongeluk. Iedereen stierf behalve ik. Ze zeggen dat ik gehandicapt ben, Maar ik ben niet, Ik coach nog steeds boksen.”
PAULIE AYALA: “De Olympische Trials van 1992 zijn mijn meest memorabele moment omdat ik erbij was. In 1988, Ik verloor in The Westerns in de halve finales en verliet het boksen. Ik was niet gefocust. Ik zag jullie excelleren en heb pas weer ruzie gemaakt 1992. Ik verloor van Sergio (Reyes), tegen wie ik had gevochten 16 keer voor dat gevecht. Ik heb veel van jullie ontmoet die in Rusland vochten. Wat inspirerend is, is naar jullie allemaal luisteren.”
MONTELL GRIFFIN: “Ik ging laat naar de kamer, binnen komen 1991. Ik had twee gevechten in de Golden Gloves, maar ik loog en zei van wel 12 zodat ik kon vechten in de opening. Mijn eerste gevecht was binnen 1991. Ik moest de nee bevechten. 1 vent, Jeremy Williams, om het Olympische team te maken. Degenen 1 ½ jaar waren de beste van mijn leven. Ik keek tegen jullie op en heb respect voor iedereen.”
ANTWUN ECHOLS: “Ik heb Team USA gehaald, en ik was een Olympische plaatsvervanger. Raul (Marquez), hij houdt van praten, en ik was opgewonden om met hem te vechten. ik heb veel geleerd. Ik vind het heerlijk om bij alle jongens te zijn. Larry Nicholson nam me onder zijn hoede. Hij sprak dagelijks met me. Ik was een jong kind, en mijn gezinsleven was niet goed. Toen ik naar de ’92 kampioenschappen ging, these people were my family. “I was raw off the streets of Davenport (Iowa) and Larry took care of me…dankjewel. If it wasn’t for the people at the Olympic Center, I don’t know where I’d be today.”
DANNY RIOS: “In 1992, I lost in the semifinals of the US Championships. Zo, I had to win the Golden Gloves to go to the Olympics. At the Trials I won my first fight and lost my second. I later turned pro. I’m working security and helping to train fighters at a local gym. I hope to have my own gym. I’m glad to see you all after all these years.
SKIPPER KELP: “I’m in Vegas. I moved here when I was in the amateurs. The best thing was the camaraderie. We grew up together. Samen, we came of age as teenagers and I met some of my best friends for life. We were all at the elite level, het beste versus het beste, en uiteindelijk vochten we elkaar. RONALD SIMMS: “Ik zat waarschijnlijk langer in het amateurteam dan wie dan ook. Ik ben zo lang gebleven dat ik veel herinneringen heb. Ik maakte deel uit van de 1988, 1992 en 1996 Olympische teams. Ik zag veel talent doorkomen. Ik begon in 1995; deze sport is verslavend en ik ben nog steeds bezig met amateurboksen. We hebben nog steeds de meest getalenteerde kinderen in het amateurboksen. “Mijn droom was om het Olympische team te worden en ik heb het nog steeds niet gehaald. We zullen dit altijd hebben om op terug te komen. Ik word emotioneel. Het maakte niet uit waar je vandaan kwam, uw economische waarden, en we streden tegen elkaar. Maar aan het eind van de dag respecteerden we elkaar. “Ik ben vandaag een spreker en auteur. Wat ik tijdens het boksen heb geleerd, is waarom ik kan doen wat ik doe. Dank. Dit is mooi. Ik ben dankbaar jullie allemaal te zien.”
JAMES JOHNSON: “Het is verbazingwekkend om een aantal van deze gezichten te zien, Het is goed je te zien, jongens! Ik herinner me het Olympisch Festival. Randall Crippen. Hij was spraakzaam……Ik gaf hem aan het einde van de wedstrijd een diploma. “Ik brak mijn hand tijdens de wedstrijd en ze lieten me niet vechten. Ik deed het en ik trok een kind uit een geboorteplaats binnen (Worcester) Massachusetts, Bobby Harris, en won. Met één hand, Ik verloor in de finale. Het is goed jullie te zien. Ik woon in Flint, Michigan. Ik ging verder met mijn studiecarrière en vandaag ben ik een netwerkingenieur.”
DEAN FLETCHER: “Ik was lange tijd een amateur. Ik heb veel herinneringen, maar een daarvan is de jaren dat ik in de raad van bestuur zat als vertegenwoordiger van atleten. Kinderen vandaag, de reden waarom je niet twee keer per dag kunt vechten, ben ik. “Het reizen, Ik kan dat niet loslaten. Als het niet goed gaat, Ik denk aan mijn amateurdagen. Niets dan liefde voor jullie.”
LARRY NICHOLSON: “Mijn meest memorabele dingen zijn de 1993 Boxer van het Jaar. Ik heb veel bereikt. Ik heb zilver gewonnen op de 1993 en 1994 Wereldkampioenschappen. Had goud moeten zijn. Jullie waren geweldige vechters en rolmodellen. Ik kreeg de kans om naar de universiteit te gaan – North Michigan University – en ik heb een diploma. “Ik ben vandaag nog steeds betrokken bij boksen als hoofdcoach van de Michigan Golden Gloves. Ik ben erg blij waar ik nu ben. Ik ben geen prof geworden omdat ik van amateurboksen houd, de discipline en het leven. Ik werkte met drie Olympische teams. We hebben het goed gedaan als frat-broers.”
MARK LANTON: “Het is een genoegen om iedereen zo te zien. Mijn meest memorabele moment was het winnen van de Western Trials. Ik was een soldaat van het leger toen ik een amateurvechter was. In Irak, soms, Frank Vassar hield contact met me. Ik ben nu met pensioen uit het leger. Ik werkte bij de VA als federale politieagent. Ik ben helemaal met pensioen. Ik coach kinderen bij een plaatselijke sportschool en ik leef het leven in Orlando.
FRANK VASSAR: “Het winnen van het Amerikaanse Olympische sportfestival en de nationale gouden handschoenen in 1999 was mijn meest memorabele. Ik zat in het leger, de Nationale Garde, toen ik aan het boksen was. Ik kreeg opdracht bij de luchtmacht. Ik deed drie gevechtstochten en raakte gewond. Gekke dingen. Ik ben blij dat ik terug ben. Ik heb er altijd van genoten om naar toernooien te gaan en jullie te zien. Ik hou van jullie allemaal.”
RICHARD BONDS: In 1989, Ik herinner me dat ik met Jeremy Williams vocht. Hij was de beste en dat zette me op de kaart. De volgende vier jaar ging ik naar Colorado en dat was het beste. Ik was een student en behaalde een diploma strafrecht aan de Universiteit van Memphis. Ik ontmoette Echols op dual. We kwamen drie of vier keer per jaar bij elkaar, misschien meer en als je iemand zag, was het net als gisteren. “In 1992, Ik wilde het Olympisch team maken. Ik verloor mijn eerste gevecht in Worcester en haalde de Olympische Spelen niet. Er waren alleen 12 gewichtsklassen en ik was een van die jongens. Je bent mijn frat-broers.”
