“It would be a great accomplishment to be in the discussion with guys like Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, that would be a win in itself. But it wasn’t on my mind when taking this fight. I just want to keep fighting the best out there. There’s still more for me to accomplish until I’m on the same level as Pacquiao and Marquez.

“I think Wilder is going to run in this fight. He should be careful what he says before the fight, because I think he’s going to run from me.
“Wilder should sign his death sentence. I’m very different than anybody else that he’s fought. I punch harder than anybody else. I’m going to teach him not to mess with Cubans.
“Some skeptics are talking about my age, but look at Mayweather. I still have my speed and my quickness.”

Davis, 22, overcame a childhood filled with hardships to become a prolific amateur and has been virtually unstoppable as a professional. He’s always ready when it’s time to get in there and do his job. But I’m prepared for him. He doesn’t know what we bring to the table.”

Are you surprised you’re not favored? When was the last time you were an underdog?

“I’m the underdog because he’s the world champion, that’s the reason. Other than that, I feel deep inside that he’s the underdog, but that’s just my assessment. He won’t be showing me anything I haven’t already seen before.

“I’ve never been the underdog in a fight, so this is a first for me.”

When’s the last time you lost a fight?

“I’m competitive all around and don’t like losing. I can’t remember exactly the last time I lost a fight, maybe it was three years ago. All I know for sure is that my mind entering this fight is all about winning.”

Critics talk of your level of competition, or lack of. What’s your opinion of the fighters Pedraza’s successfully defended against lately?

“I’m not taking anything away from Pedraza; he’s beat Stephen Smith and Edner Cherry but those guys don’t bring the power, vitesse, elusiveness and angles that I do. I’m not downgrading anybody, but they’re mostly average.”

Are you looking at this as an opportunity to showcase your overall skills, durability, etc.?

“A lot of people don’t realize the skills and talent that I have. They see me just going in there like a little Tyson or someone like that. But I have all the tools. I know how to box, how to move my feet. I have good hand speed. I work my angles and things like that. I’m an overall sound fighter, un boxeur-puncheur.

“I think this will be a wakeup call for boxing, a chance to show that I’m the one. But I’m not coming to be just the top guy. I want to be a superstar and bring joy and entertainment to the sport. Pedraza will bring out the best in me and I will steal the show.”

How do you manage to stay in the moment, and not look back, or can you?

“I’m so thankful that I am part of a strong team, and that I have such a great team. I believe we have the greatest team in boxing. They keep me grounded, concentré. They keep me from getting distracted. We all know what the main goal is. I can’t do it all myself, my coach can’t do it all himself, my manager can’t do it all himself. We believe totally in each other as a team. I listen to everything they say.”

How much is your past a motivation, or is it? When you look back at your life do you have memories or nightmares?

“I believe I’ve accomplished a lot. Me just being alive today, me not being in jail or in trouble outside the ring, it’s hard from where I come from. But it’s all helped me handle situations well. I’m so used to dealing with situations. I’m older and know what’s right from wrong. There’s never any pressure when I fight. I’ve won so many fights already I know what to do when I get in the ring.”

How long have you known Floyd? When did you meet him and how would you describe your relationship? What does it mean for Floyd to be your promoter?

“The first time I talked to Floyd (at length) was at the Adrien Broner-Shawn Porterfight (Juin 20, 2015). Me and Adrien, we’re friends and he flew me out to Las Vegas for the fight. I worked out at the Mayweather gym and Floyd liked the way I fought, my heart. But the first time I actually met and talked to him came when one of Floyd’s press tours came to Washington, D.C.

“Floyd has always had a major impact on me and my career. I grew up around him. All of us wanted to be like him. Like Tyson and Ali were to the generations of boxers before me, Floyd was our superstar. For him to bring me under his wing, to fight for him, is unbelievably great.”

DeGale worked out and answered questions for media at the Stonebridge Boxing Club as he nears his third straight fight in the United States, this time looking to return to the UK as a unified world champion.

“This is the best fighting the best and this fight will prove who’s the best in the division — and I believe I am the number one super middleweight on the planet.

 

“Unification fights like this are still rare, never mind the best fighting the best, and me and Jack both wanted the fight. We both want to prove who is the best and everyone is in for a treat on Janvier 14.

 

“I’ve got the best trainer in the world in Jim McDonnell; together we won the world title and now we’re going to unify the title. I’m going to win in style and do the business in the big New York City and come away with both belts to bring back to London.

 

“Jack’s a serious fighter, he’s a world champion, he has something I want. The winner of this will be the number in the division.

 

“Growing up, Joe Calzaghe, and Prince Naseem Hamed, they’re the ones I used to watch and I’d think, ‘I can’t wait to do that.’ Calzaghe’s one of my favorite fighters. He’s a bit similar to me. BROOKLYN (Décembre 8, 2016)-The only two Puerto Rican-born world champions in boxing are set to show their skills and heart for boxing fans in New York as Jose “Sniper” Pedraza et Amanda “Real Deal” Serrano defend their titles on Samedi, Janvier 14 au Barclays Center de Brooklyn et en direct AFFICHER L'HEURE.
“Puerto Rico has such a rich boxing history with many of the sport’s greatest champions hailing from the island,” a déclaré Lou DiBella, Président de DiBella Entertainment. “Maintenant, there are only two Puerto Rican-born world champions, junior lightweight Jose Pedraza and junior featherweight Amanda Serrano, and I happen to promote them both. Janvier 14 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn is a tremendous card all around, but it will also serve as a celebration of Puerto Rican pride and heritage to be able to watch the country’s only two world champions defend their titles on the same show.”
Pedraza (22-0, 12 KOs) will defend his IBF Super Featherweight World Championship against hard-hitting unbeaten contender Gervonta Davis (16-0, 15 KOs)in the co-main event on SHOWTIME. With his victory in June 2015, Pedraza added his name to the distinguished list of Puerto Rican world champions. After losses suffered by Roman Martinez and McJoe Arroyo, he currently stands as the only remaining male champion born in Puerto Rico.
“Being the only male Puerto Rican-born world champion is something that I’m very proud of,” Saïd Pedraza. “It is also a big weight that I carry on my shoulders. I know that I have to give my best because I am not just a champion of the ring. I am a champion of my island of Puerto Rico. Knowing that all of Puerto Rico will be in there with me encourages me to give my all every time I step into the ring.

The winner of the Serrano-Rivas matchup will earn the prestigious WBC Diamond championship. Serrano’s first world title victory in 2011 made her just the third Puerto Rican-born woman to win a world title.
This bout also signifies the first nationally televised women’s world title bout in nearly a decade, since Mary Jo Saunders fought Valerie Mahfood on March 30, 2007 (ESPN2).
“It feels fantastic to be fighting on SHOWTIME for the first time and sharing the stage at Barclays Center with my countryman Jose Pedraza,” Saïd Serrano. “Knowing that both he and I are currently the only two Puerto Rican-born world champions, masculin ou féminin, in boxing today is an honor.

The fighters handed out 100 turkeys along with other Thanksgiving foods to help aid the organization that has provided millions of meals for people in the area. Hailing from countries all around the world, the fighters got together to give back in the borough that they will be competing in come January. La conférence de presse a marqué le retour de la boxe à New York pour la première fois depuis une mesure d'assurance controversée instituée par le gouvernement de l'État de New York.. Les participants étaient sur place pour discuter du double titre passionnant sur Janvier 14 et célébrant le retour tant attendu de la boxe dans la Grosse Pomme.
Voici ce que les participants avaient à dire mercredi:
BADOU JACK
“Je pense que ce sera un combat passionnant. Je vais tout donner et il va tout donner. C'est un combat plus important que tout ce dont nous avons fait partie. Il va l'augmenter et moi aussi.
“Maintenant c'est moi et DeGale. Tous les autres combats sont du passé. Nous avons eu des résultats différents contre les mêmes combattants. Mais rien de tout cela n'a d'importance, il est temps de se battre.
“Un vrai champion peut prendre une perte et rebondir. Cela montre quel genre de personne vous êtes. J'ai prouvé que j'étais mentalement dur.
“La boxe n'est pas morte. Il est là pour rester. Il y a de très bons combats à venir. Probablement encore plus l'année prochaine.
“Je viens de Suède, un pays qui n'a pas de boxe. Maintenant je suis ici en tête d'affiche à New York pour un combat d'unification. le ciel est la limite. Je reste toujours humble et n'oublie jamais d'où je viens.
“Ce que les gens pensent la nuit du combat n’importe pas. DeGale est définitivement l'un des meilleurs gars de la division. C'est un guerrier de la route. Il vient ici et combat les gars dans leur arrière-cour. Il mérite beaucoup de crédit. C'est pourquoi ce combat est si grand. Nous voulons tous les deux être géniaux.
“J'aime être l'opprimé. Si je suis l'opprimé dans ce combat, alors c'est parfait pour moi. Il n'y aura aucune excuse quand je le battrai.
“J'essaie juste de rester humble victoire après victoire et de continuer à espérer des choses plus grandes et meilleures. Après ce combat, viens me parler de qui est le meilleur de la division.
“Je ne veux me comparer à personne d’autre mais j’ai passé quelques bonnes années. Maintenant, nous travaillons pour avoir deux années encore meilleures.
“J'ai fait une erreur et j'ai été pris dans ma perte. J'ai pu rebondir et cela a fait de moi un meilleur combattant. C'était définitivement une bénédiction déguisée. Les gens me négligent encore à cause de ça. Je regarde ça comme une bonne chose.
“Tout arrive pour une raison. Je suis très chanceux d’être ici à Brooklyn. C'est ma deuxième maison en Amérique. Je me suis entraîné au Gleason’s Gym à 2009 et maintenant je suis en tête d'affiche au Barclays Center. C'est incroyable.”
James DeGale
“C'est ici. Le grand. Le meilleur combat le meilleur. Numéro un contre numéro deux. Badou Jack est un très bon combattant. Il ne fait rien de spectaculaire, mais c’est un combattant de compétition.
“J'ai ce facteur X. J'ai perdu avant et je ne vais plus perdre. Je suis venu trop loin dans ma vie pour perdre cette opportunité.
“Sur Janvier 14, Brooklyn va se régaler. Vous ne voudrez pas manquer celui-ci. Assurez-vous d'avoir vos billets.
“Mon peuple à Londres ne peut pas attendre que je me batte à la maison. Ça arrive. Mais d'abord je veux prendre le relais en Amérique.
“New York est l'une de mes villes préférées. C’est une ville de boxe. J'ai regardé Santa Cruz vs. Frampton et c'était une mauvaise atmosphère. J'ai hâte d'y être.
“Je suis très confiant en mes capacités. Je crois que je suis le meilleur de la division et l’un des meilleurs au monde. J'attends ce combat depuis longtemps et je suis prêt à y entrer.
“Je pense que dans les trois derniers combats, j'ai tout montré. Je n'ai pas reçu le respect que je mérite. J'ai battu tout le monde mis devant moi. C'est ce que j'aime faire.
“Je suis un super poids moyen naturel. Je veux être dans des combats où les gens pensent que je vais perdre. Je vais défier n'importe qui.
“Moi et Badou Jack sommes deux combattants différents. Je pense que je vais le battre largement sur les tableaux de bord ou l’arrêter.”
Jose Pedraza
“Je suis reconnaissant à tout le monde ici et à mes gens de New York qui, je le sais, me soutiendront la nuit du combat.
“Je m'attends à ce que ce soit un combat très excitant. Je vais être prêt pour tout ce que Davis apportera sur le ring. Je vais m'occuper des affaires.
“Je suis très privilégié d’aider à cette cause et d’aider à pousser la boxe à New York. Je vais représenter mon peuple sur Janvier 14 et je suis très fier de l'opportunité.

“Je suis désolé que Davis ait signé pour Mayweather, parce que quand j'enlève son record invaincu, Je vais avoir l’impression de battre Mayweather.”
GERVONTA DAVIS
“Ça fait du bien de se battre à Brooklyn pour la première fois. Je n’ai jamais combattu à New York et c’est formidable. Beaucoup de fans de ma ville viendront ici pour le combat.
“Pedraza est un adversaire coriace. Nous allons travailler dur dans le camp et être prêts à nous battre Janvier 14.
“Ma ville natale me soutient depuis toutes ces années. Sur Janvier 14, Je reçois mon coup. C'est incroyable. Je sais que Pedraza est un grand combattant. Les gens diront qu'il a plus d'expérience. Mais j'avais 206 gagne chez les amateurs et beaucoup de titres.
“Il n'y a rien que Pedraza puisse apporter sur le ring que je n'ai jamais vu auparavant. J'ai été testé au combat à l'intérieur du ring et à l'extérieur du ring.
“Il va devoir me tuer pour conserver son titre. Je rentre à la maison un champion. Il n'y a aucun doute là-dessus.
“Sur le papier, c'est certainement ma tâche la plus difficile. Nous sommes tous les deux de grands combattants. J'espère qu'il s'entraîne dur parce que je m'entraîne pour le combat de ma vie.

(On how he feels fighting someone who is going to force the fight like himself)
“Pour moi, in a perfect world, I would have a guy right there to exchange with me but Ruslan and his team have been around the game a long time. They know that I’m a puncher. I anticipate Ruslan to do what he does best, which is sit there and fight but I also anticipate him also utilizing his boxing ability given his amateur pedigree and his experience in the pro game. We’re prepared for any Ruslan whether he tries to get up and box or whether he sits there and bangs. We know he’s a strong fighter. We know he’s a strong puncher and we’re prepared for that. Ruslan is going to be Ruslan and he’s going to sit down and fight with me.”

(On how he mentally prepares for fights)
“I have no other way. You look at my fights and the outcome, we have that fighter spirit in us. If we’re being cordial, it’s because we’re professional. It’s what we do for a living. If we take it outside of the ring that’s very ignorant and not very mature. Crois moi, I understand and know, and Ruslan understands and knows, that come Juin 11 all of the kindness goes out the window. After the fight we could be best of friends. It is a big main event between Provodnikov and John Molina; two guys that are going to back up and give some good entertainment. In my eyes, Willie Nelson and Demetrius Andrade is the number one 154 fight that you don’t want to miss leading up to fighting for a title shot for the WBC against a Charlo brother (Jermell).”

(On how it felt to be inactive for so long)
“I’ve been staying busy, staying focused knowing that there’s a bigger picture at the end of the day. All great legends and all Hall of Fame fighters have their story lines. My time is coming around. The tables are turning and people are going to have to step up and fight each other in one way or another. Parfois, where you are in life is more conducive than your bank account. Si, I’m not upset, or mad or frustrated with a thing that is going on and how everything played out.

I feel that it is one of the best fights in the 154 division that has ever been made.

“Not looking past Willie Nelson but me, my character, my hard work and my ethics, I’m looking to be the best and fight the best out there. I want to put out there and say congratulations to the Charlo twins on making history for being twin brothers to win (titres). But I’m going to make history by taking both of those titles and beating both of them.

(On what it was like to be stripped of a title)
“A belt doesn’t identify me. That doesn’t change anything about me, my fight style, who I am or anything like that. Nowadays you don’t have to have a title to be king of the ring but this is an opportunity for me to get back in the likes of fighting with the WBC. Fighting on the SHOWTIMEJuin 11 card is going to be good movement for me. As far as boxing, the days are coming back where the champ is fighting the best.”

WILLIE “THE GREAT” NELSON
“This is Willie Nelson, one of the top contenders for the 154-pound division. Je suis excité pour ce combat. I think that both of us feel like this fight right here is going to be the shot that both of us have been looking for. I feel like this is my time right now. With me and Boo Boo’s past history, unfortunately we have to come to this fight. We’re pretty cool as friends but it’s our time so we have to get in there and show the world what we’re made of.”

(On the reasoning behind the lengthy layoff)
“One of the reasons was because of the death of Steve Smith but also because it is hard getting fights. Nobody wants to fight a 6-foot, 4-inch junior middleweight that’s actually coming to fight and that has decent pop. En plus de cela, look at my career. “One thing that has characterized Ruslan throughout his career is that he is a fan favorite and that is consistent regardless of what the scorecards are at the end of the fight. As a network executive what we’re looking for is entertaining programming, and fights that people want to see, fights that people talk about, and that is consistently what Ruslan has delivered throughout his career. He is one of those types of fighters who, like John [Molina Jr.] aussi, that even if they have a handful of losses on their record, it really doesn’t matter because they are as entertaining and enjoyable to watch as anyone in the sport.

“We try to have a variety of fights; some with really skilled guys, some guys who are really big punchers, a variety of weight classes, a variety of different types of fighters. This is one where it’s not about titles, not about anything but two guys who fight really hard and who give it their all. [It’s about two guys] meeting in the ring to figure out who’s the better boxer on that night.

“This is one way to add a different type of variety to the sport. Once we had the fight at the top of the card we tried to be consistent for the whole card down. If you look at guys like Demetrius and Willie, Dejan and even down to Willie Monroe Jr. and John Thompson, I think that characterizes this as what should be and all-action night.”

“I give all the credit to Demetrius and Willie for this fight. For Willie on stepping up to this challenge. We have one of the most avoided guys in the division in Demetrius, who’s taking such a tough fight after a relatively long layoff and period of inactivity. It just shows what kind of guys these are and how they are anxious to step up to the next level of their careers.”
