Murphys Boxingis proud to announce that the next recipient of theWarrior’s Code Awardwill be New England boxing legend, ‘Iceman’ Juan Scully.
The Hartford, Connecticut based Scully was one of the most popular fighters in the region during the 1990s and he went 38-11 in a professional career in the light heavyweight division that included challenging for the world title against Henry Maske in Germany.
After his professional career, ‘Iceman’ achieved fame calling rebroadcasts of fights forESPN Classicas well as writing a popular column in the British magazine, Balita sa Boksing.
However Scully has achieved his most success as a trainer being instrumental in helping take fighters likeJose Antonio Rivera ug Chad Dawsonto world titles.
Scully is now a co-trainer of the Russian, now Canadian based, undefeated light heavyweight world champion, Artur Beterbiev, who defends his title this Saturday in California live onESPN.
In addition to his work as a trainer he has been an passionate advocate and champion for the rights and well being of retired fighters.
“I’m extremely honored to receive this recognition and I really appreciate Murphys Boxing for thinking of me.”, says the 51 year old Connecticut resident.
“It’s particularly special because it will come in the city of Springfield where I spent the majority of my amateur boxing career training at the old Central City Gym at the X under Coach John Tynan. I’m looking forward to a great night.”
Murphys Boxing founder, Ken Caseyexplains the promotion’s decision to name Scully as the latest recipient of the award named after one of the Dropkick Murphy’s signature songs, “The Warrior’s Code” which is a tribute to another New England boxing hero, Micky Ward.
“John Scully is the epitome of the Warrior’s Code Award.”, says Casey.
“John’s career in boxing, from being a world class fighter to his work as an analyst to his success as a trainer, is inspirational. It shows young fighters there is opportunity for them in the sport after their in ring career is over. By giving back as a trainer and a mentor, he also represents the bridge from New England’s past boxing history to the present. Murphys Boxing is honored to acknowledge and celebrate John Scully’s many achievements in the sport.”
Scully will be third recipient of the award established this year by Murphys Boxing to celebrate those fighters who contributed to the rich and diverse history of boxing in New England. Scully joins 2019 International Hall of Fame Inductee, Tony DeMarcoand decorated Massachusetts’ amateur, Mike D’Ampolowho received the first awards at Murphys Boxing’s last event in Melrose, Massachusetts this past March.

The award’s first recipients will be2019 International Boxing Hall of Fameinductee,Tony DeMarco and one of Massachusetts’ most decorated amateur boxers, Mike D’Ampolo.
Both fighters will be presented with their awards nextBiyernes, March 29that the Murphys Boxing event atMemorial Hall sa Melrose, Massachusetts.

Known as ‘Nardo’, the Boston fighter of Italian descent, turned pro unbelievably just a few years after the end of World War II. Sa usa ka 14 year career, DeMarco went 52-12-1 while fighting during boxing’s golden age. His legendary battles with Hall of Famers likeCarmen Basilio ug Kid Gavilinmade DeMarco a star and he won thewelterweight world title sa 1955 batok sa Johnny Saxtonat the original Boston Garden in a fight that was voted one ofBoston’s Top 10 Sports Moments.
DeMarco, who still can be found ringside at Murphys Boxing events and whose statue resides in Boston’s North End where he still lives, will receive the long overdue honor of joining the International Boxing Hall of Fame as a 2019 inductee this June.
“Murphys Boxing has always been very welcoming to me and my family.”, explains DeMarco.
“They have a true respect for boxing’s history. It’s an honor to be given their first ever award just months before entering the International Boxing Hall of Fame. I am looking forward to the evening.”
Joining DeMarco will be Melrose’s own, Mike D’Ampolo, who is considered one of the most successful amateurs ever to come out of the state of Massachusetts.
D’Ampolo was a Bag-ong England nga Golden Gloves Champion, sa usa ka 3x New England AAU Champ, sa usa ka 2x Eastern Regional Championand participated in the1984 Olympic Pagsulaybarely missing a spot on the legendary1984 USA Olympic Teamwith his weight class ultimately being represented by none other thanEvander Holyfield.
On advice from his father, D’Ampolo made the decision to not enter the professional ranks and went onto become a successful businessman with his company, M&L Transit Systems based out of his hometown of Melrose, Massachusetts.
“I’m humbled. Back when we were fighting, there wasn’t much recognition or credit given to amateurs.”, says D’Ampolo.
“I used to be in the paper back then but it’s been a long time and I’m just very grateful to Murphys Boxing for remembering and honoring me here in my hometown.”
