Buhata Dili. 1 rated WBA Super Flyweight John “Scrappy” Ramirez believes in the process

LOS ANGELES (Hulyo 2, 2025) -- It’s “Scrappy Time” again!

For the first time in 2025, charismatic super flyweight contenderJohn “Scrappy” Ramirez (15-1, 9 KOs) returned to the ring on last Saturday’s DAZN Pay-Per-View event, presented by MVP Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, and headlined by YouTuber turned boxerJake “The Problem Child” Paul(12-1, 7 KOs) batok saJulio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (54-7-1, 34 KOs) at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Sa usa ka 8-round bout, “Scrappy” dominated Houston’sJosue Jesus Morales (33-19-5, 14 KOs), who was a very late replacement forSaleto Henderson (10-2, 7 KOs), enroute to an 8-round unanimous decision (80-72, 80-72, 89-73).

Henderson pulled out of the fight last Wednesday night, Morales accepted the fight Thursday evening after the event’s final press conference.

“I trusted the process,” Ramirez explained. “It was emotional when my original opponent pulled out of the fight so late and I didn’t know if I’d be fighting. I’m happy I got the fight, even if I had to open the show, because I’ve learned to embrace the opportunity. I trained to fight a 5’ 2”, righty and fought a southpaw. I was comfortable, regardless, because I prepare at camp for anything that may happen. I wanted the fight and gave him (Morales) two passes on weight. He was coming in heavy; sa ingon, we agreed to fight at a 120-pound catchweight. Before he stepped on the scale, he said he weighed 121.6. I didn’t want him to be fined for coming in overweight because he was doing me a favor by taking the fight. I respect him for taking the fight on late notice and we changed the contract to 121.6. Nothing changed for me other than the opponent and opening the preliminaries. Time is money, and I wanted everything I had done to count like camp (expenses), resources I used, mileage on my body. Everything happens for a reason. There are six months left in 2025, and my goal is to have two more fights.”

The 29-year-old Ramirez is world rated at No. 1 sa WBA, ingon man usab sa No. 12 ug ang No. 15, sa tinagsa, sa World Boxing Council (WBC) and WBO.Fernando Daniel Martinez (16-0, 9 KOs), sa Argentina, is the reigning WBA Super Flyweight World ChampionDavid Jimenez (17-1, 11 KOs) remains the WBA Interim Champion.

“I’m back where I left off (Buhata Dili. 1 ranggo nga),” ni Ramirez. “After my last fight I was No. 2, ‘Chocolatito’ (Roman Gonzalez) was on top. And before this coming fight, I wanted to go up to No. 1 ug unya, a little while ago, I saw that I was back at No. 1. It’s a good feeling to have put myself back where I was. Niini nga punto, I have power and leverage. They may want me to fight a rematch with Jimenez, who is still the (WBA) Interim champion but we’ll see how everything plays out. If I get the opportunity to fight ‘Chocolatito’ or ‘Bam’ (WBC world championJessie Rodriguez), I’d do that if it makes sense.”

Fighting out of South Central Los Angeles, “Scrappy” hasn’t fought since last December 14th when he decisioned previously undefeatedEphraim Bui (10-0) pinaagi sa daghang 97-93 sa tulo ka higayon. In Ramirez’ previous fight in April of 2024, “Scrappy” had suffered the lone loss of his pro career to Jimenez for the WBA Interim Super Flyweight crown.

“I’m hungry! I feel like I’ve been locked up in a cage. I’m happy to be back to the spot I had before.,” Ramirez continued. ”I’m ignoring distractions and continue to work on my craft and self-discipline. I know my opportunity (world title shot) will come. Even when I didn’t know who my opponent would be or even if I’d fight (karong Sabado), I just let that go and kept training hard to keep improving.

“Everything is based on my confidence. sa gihapon ako sa pagkat-on sa trabaho. I like to compare it to when I played football, my level of confidence, because I knew what that was all about for me. I’ve gained that same level of experience in the ring, when to or when not to do something that I’ve learned through my experiences. Going back to December 14th, I was coming off my only loss eight months earlier, and it’s been six months since my last fight. I kept on the right path, and now I have my old football comfort and understanding. People compared me with fighters who’ve fought their whole lives, but I didn’t make my pro debut until December of 2020. I started late (sa boxing) and I’m still learning and figuring things out.”

Sa pagkatinuod, ‘Scrappy’ has been an adaptive learner who resents being called by some as ahyped-up fighter, primarily because of his commitment and sacrifices he’s made to be the all-around fighter he has become.

“I know I have the skills to be world champion,” Ramirez concluded. “I like to fight and prove people wrong. I train to learn how to perform better. I’m in a great spot. I know I need to keep winning and that my opportunity will come. I’m only really thinking about this fight as I glimpse a little into my future.”

It’s “Scrappy Time” again and the dynamic super flyweight is closing in on his world title.

Quebec CITY (Disyembre 1, 2018) – Adonis Stevenson’s five-and-a-half-year reign as the WBC Light Heavyweight Champion is over. Oleksandr Gvozdyk dethroned boxing’s longest reigning champion with a devastating 11th round knockout Saturday in Quebec City in a SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION telecast that immediately preceded the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury SHOWTIME PPV.

Gvozdyk (16-0, 13 KOs) used a powerful multi-punch combination in the penultimate round to put the back-and-forth bout out of question. The former Olympic bronze medalist and amateur teammate of fellow Ukrainians Vasyl Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk was impressive throughout the entire fight. He executed trainer Teddy Atlas’ game plan to perfection and was the busier of the two fighters. Stevenson (29-2-1, 24 KOs), who was making his 10th title defense, was able to land his signature left hand on several occasions, most notably in the tenth round, but never did enough to truly trouble his opponent.

“This win means everything to me. I’ve trained my whole life for this and tonight all of the hard work was worth it,” said Gvozdyk, who was the mandatory challenger for Stevenson. “Having Teddy [Atlas] in my corner was a huge help. He knew exactly what to say to me. We trained so well for this fight and I knew I was going to get the knockout.

“Adonis was a great champion but it’s my time now. He got me with a good shot in the 10th round but I handled it and finished him. Karon, I just want to rest before I discuss my next step. I definitely want to stay at 175 mobanlas. "

Stevenson was transported to a local hospital as precautionary measure and was unavailable for comment following the fight.

Saturday’s one-fight telecast from Quebec City will replay on Monday, Disyembre 3 sa 10 sa gabii. Ang SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION streamed live on SHOWTIME Sports social platforms and is archived on the SHO Sports YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Barry Tompkins called the action from ringside with former world champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analyst. The executive producer was Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Quebec CITY (Nobyembre 29, 2018) – Boxing’s longest reigning world champion, Adonis Stevenson, ug undefeated, mandatory challenger Oleksandr Gvozdyk faced off Thursday at the final press conference ahead of Stevenson’s 10th defense of his WBC Light Heavyweight Title in a SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION telecast Saturday, Disyembre 1 from Videotron Center in Quebec City.

SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION will air live on SHOWTIME and stream for free on the SHO Sports YouTube channel ug ang mga SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook Page sugod sa7:45 sa gabii. UG / 4:45 sa gabii. PT, immediately preceding the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury SHOWTIME PPV. Wilder vs. Fury begins at 9 sa gabii. ET / 6 hapon. PT and also features unified 154-pound world champion Jarrett Hurd returning to take on Jason Welborn, Cuban heavyweight slugger Luis Ortiz facing-off against Travis Kauffman and rising heavyweight Joe Joyce nakigbatok sa Joe Hanks.

Here is what Stevenson, Gvozdyk and their respective trainers had to say Thursday at Chateau Bonne Entente in Quebec City:

Adonis Stevenson:

“Saturday is a big fight. I’m not underestimating Gvozdyk. I know he’s a good fighter and he’s hungry. He’s trained very hard to get my title. But everybody who comes to my home in Canada always wants my title, but it’s never happened and it’s not going to happen now.

“I’m looking for the knockout. That’s just my mentality and the way that I train. Sugar [Hill Steward] trains me to think that way but I can also go 12 rounds, it’s not a problem. I know that if he makes a mistake, I’m going to catch him. He only has to slip up once in 12 rounds. One mistake, one punch. That’s all it’s going to take. Ako andam. I know I can punch and it’s 12 rounds. I just need one punch. Just one. I’m going to catch him and the night will be over.

“I’ve been pushing myself in training and I’m going to put on another great performance come Saturday and will defend my title once again. In the words of my old trainer, Emanuel Piniyalan, ‘knockouts selland that’s what I’m going for in this fight. I know I’m facing a good boxer who’s coming in very determined. He’ll be ready, but it won’t be enough. Superman is in the building!"

OLEKSANDR GVOZDYK:

“I’m glad to finally be here. Excited na kaayo ko. I want to thank Top Rank and GYM Promotions for finally making this happen. I respect Adonis Stevenson as a fighter, he’s a great champion. But I am ready to accept this challenge and on Saturday night there will be a new champion.

“I have one of the greatest trainers in the history of boxing so I’m very confident. We have a good strategy. We had an excellent training camp and I’m ready. Adonis is a great fighter. He’s a dangerous southpaw and this is a real step-up for me but it’s my time.

“People always ask about Stevenson’s age but George Foreman and Bernard Hopkins performed at a high level when they were 50-years-old. It really just depends on how you maintain your body, your living conditions, how you eat and how you train.

“I’m not worried about what the bookmakers say. It doesn’t mean anything that they think I am the favorite. I try to stay focused on the things that I need to be focused on, not what the bookmakers think. The further this fight goes, the better my chances are. My height, my movement and my patience will win me this fight.”

SUGAR HILL STEWARD, STEVENSON’S TRAINER

“I’m happy to be here once again. This is like a second home for Adonis. This fight is just going to be regular Adonis. Adonis wants to get a knockout. Ganahan ko sa knockout. This is how we train for every fight. It’s no disrespect to any fighter, but that’s just the mentality that we have. Adonis and I don’t believe in leaving it in the hands of the judges and that’s been working so far. We will continue to do what we’ve been doing.”

“Adonis has been training his whole life for something like this. This is a big world championship fight against a former Olympian. Welcome to big time boxing, this is what it’s all about. Come December 1, Adonis Stevenson is going to get another knockout.”

TEDDY ATLAS, GVOZDYK’S TRAINER

“We knew that this would be a very difficult fight but what we didn’t know was how difficult it would be to get here. That part of the fight is over, thankfully. We spent eight weeks in California preparing for this bout. Preparing for a tremendous champion. I don’t have to speak about how long he’s been a champion, his reign, his experience, how talented and dangerous he is as a puncher. I believe he’s the best or second-best puncher in boxing today. It’s either him or [Deontay] Wilder, whatever you choose.

“Stevenson has all of the qualities a great fighter needs. He has a great heart, he’s gotten off the canvas and showed tremendous heart late in the Badou Jack fight. This is quite a task that’s in front of us. We understand that. The good news is that we know exactly what we’re facing and we’ve prepared the last eight weeks for that. We have not overlooked anything. I have no doubt that although we have a very steep challenge in front of us, that on Saturday night we will have a new Light Heavyweight Champion of the World.”

Siya wala gayud-among-among kanako.
