Kansas Athletic Commission overturns ‘No Contest’ to TKO win for undefeated super middleweight prospect Marco Romero

Kansas City, Mai. (Juni 4, 2025) -The Kansas Athletic Commission has overturned a “no Contest” ruling to a second-round technical knockout victory for 19-year-old boxing phenom Marco“El Tiburón”Romero (7-0, 6 KOs).

Romero, fighting out of Olathe (KS), faced Noah Kidd (10-14-2, 5 KOs) mai 24th in a scheduled six-round bout outdoors at Energy Plaza in downtown Topeka, Kansas.

Romero completely dominated Kidd, who was reluctant to fight once he felt Marco’s strength, and he was floored in the second round. Kidd then claimed he was unable to continue fighting due to an injury he suffered after falling out of the ring.

Marco’s manager/head trainer John Brown immediately filed a protest requesting the “No Contest” be changed to a well-deserved win for Romero. His challenge noted that the alleged injury was not the result of a foul, Romero was physically able and ready to continue the bout, and circumstances surrounding the fall and stoppage warranted further review.

“I’m glad I got that win on my record,” Romero said. “I put in a lot of hard work in the gym, running and making sacrifices during training camp. I’m happy the Kansas Athletic Commission took its time, watched the fight and made its ruling. The dude only came to pick up a paycheck.”

The Kansas Athletic Commission reviewed the incident and determined that Kidd’s injury from falling out of the ring was accidental, not caused by Romero. The bout was stopped by the ringside physician for medical reasons. Romero did not violate any rules and was capable of continuing the fight.

Based on the Commissions review of circumstances and applicable regulations, the bout did not meet the threshold for a ‘No Contest’ ruling under Kansas law, as the injury did not arise from a rule violation or external interference.

Considering these findings, the Kansas Athletic Commission ruled to overturn the original rules and amended it as an official recording as a Technical Knockout (WHO) victory in favor of Romero.

“Marco came to fight but his opponent wanted to play rugby, trying to run him over and tackle him,” Brown commented. “His opponent hurt himself with these tactics and upon closer examination, the commission did the right thing.”

Romero’s next scheduled fight is June 14 vs. Nafys Anas Garner in a 6-round super middleweight bout in Portland, Maine.

Undefeated Kansas Boxing Phenom Marco “El Tiburón” Romero to continue touring, Topeka debut May 24

Kansas City, Mai. (Mai 8, 2025) -The Magical Mystery Tour for Kansas boxing phenom Marco“El Tiburón”Romero (6-0, 5 KOs) will make a new stop on Saturday, Mai 24th, when the 19-year-old super middleweight faces upset specialist Noah Kidd in a six-round bout outdoors at Energy Plaza in downtown Topeka, Kansas.

Not only is this event considerably closer to his Olathe (KS) home than anywhere Romero has fought so far as a professional, but it is also a widely successful annual show that has reportedly drawn 8,000 fans.

“I’m super excited, pumped up to fight only a 45-minute drive from my hometown for my fans,” Romero said. “They don’t need to drive 15 hours like they have or fly cross country. I’m really going to put on a show for my hometown fans. It’ll be nice to hear hometown fans cheering me on. Other than relatives who live in Denver, I made a few new fans in the other places I’ve fought. They’re starting to know who I am, and it’s really cool for people to come up to me saying they follow me.”

The 29-year-old Kidd (10-13-2, 5 KOs), fighting out of Jefferson, Missouri, recently knocked off then-18-0 Deshawn Prather by way of a 6-round unanimous decision.

“This will be Marco’s seventh fight in a year since turning pro because we have Marco on a fast track due to his vast amateur experience and desire to stay active and improve,” Romero’s legendary manager/trainer John Brown explained. “We are hopeful that Noah Kidd can withstand Marco’s shark (Marco’s nickname‘El Tiburón’ means ‘The Shark’ in Englishbites and give him several rounds of good work.”

Som en profesjonell, the 23-time national amateur champion Romero has fought in Portland, Maine and Denver twice apiece, Tampa and Atlantic City. His aggressive schedule tentatively continues after Topeka on June 14 in Portland (ME), Juni 27 i Wichita (KS), Juli 25 i Atlantic City, September 6 in Olathe and back to Portland (ME) november 8.

“I love fighting this schedule, fighting every month or two,” Romero noted. “Maybe over time with all the wear and tear could tire me. But I was born to box; it’s my dream. Whoever Coach John (Brown) puts in front of me; I tell him I got him.

“I do think about when I’ll be fighting only twice a year for a lot more money than I’m making today. That’s my goal but I’m focused on the present. I’m working hard every day to get better. I slutten, I want to walk away from boxing healthy and hopefully wealthy, like Coach John says. I really like this plan.”

“’El Tiburon’ has four, maybe five bouts scheduled for the rest of the year and at that time, or before, we will partner up with one of the highly recognized promotional groups that have been pursuing Marco,” Brown added. “He is a promoter’s dream: unge, handsome, articulate, bilingual, and he has an action-packed style. After watching ‘Canelo’ (Alvarez) last weekend……boxing needs a Marco Romero.”

USA Boxing Alumni Association Profile: Dr. WilbertSkeeterMcClure

1960 OLYMPIC GOLD: (L-R) Wilbert McClure, Cassius Clay and Eddie Crook, Jr.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Lap. (August 20, 2018) – One of the classiest boxers to ever lace-up a pair of gloves is Dr. WilbertSkeeterMcClure, who is the only American boxer to capture an Olympic gold-medal and also earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D).

When I think of ‘SkeeterMcClure,” USA Boxing president John Brown sa, “I think of the grassroots of our sport. When ‘Skeeterwas a young boy growing up in Toledo, Ohio, he had a twinkle in his eye and a desire to box. We would learn later in life how talented, gifted and passionate ‘SkeeterMcClure was about the sport of boxing.

It would be impossible for me, somebody who has spent his entire life in boxing, to find a better representative of our sport than ‘SkeeterMcClure.

Tilnavnet “Skeeterbecause his father thought he looked no bigger than a mosquito at birth, McClure was born October 29, 1938 in Toledo, Ohio, and he developed into the perfect example of brains and brawn.

The now 79-year-old McClure earned degrees in literature and philosophy in 1961 from the University of Toledo and a doctorate in psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit. He was a professor at Northeastern University and late became a Massachusetts state boxing commissioner. I 2012, he was honored for his life’s work by the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School.

McClure had an incredible boxing career, highlighted by his gold-medal performance at the 1960 OL, defeating his Italian opponent in Rome, Carmelo Bossi, to capture the light middleweight gold medal, despite fighting with a severely damaged hand suffered in the semifinals. The two other American gold medalists that year was his roommate and team co-captain, Cassius Clay (aka Muhammad Ali) and Eddie Crook, Jr.

During his illustrious amateur career, McClure was dominant in 1959-1960, winning gold medals at the 1959 Pan-American Games, two-time National AAU tournaments, 1958 International Diamond Belt. He was also named Outstanding U.S. Amateur Boxer in 1959.

Al Valenti, Special Projects Consultant for USA Boxing, has known McClure as long as anybody alive, “I had the pleasure of meeting ‘SkeeterMcClure in the late eighties,” Valenti noted, “and since the day I met him I’ve held him in the highest esteem. I cannot find another boxer who has achieved what ‘Skeeterhas during his life in boxing. He was a talented amateur boxer who won at every level and, beyond that, he served in the U.S. Army, earned a Ph.D in psychology, and he also had a long career as a college professor. One thing that stands out among his accomplishments is that he’s the kindest, most sincere gentlemen I’ve ever met.

During his tenure on the Massachusetts Boxing Commission, he fully understood the sport and what was needed. As a promoter, I was never busier than when he oversaw boxing in Massachusetts. One of the highlights of my life is when I introduced ‘Skeeterto crowds at our events, after listening to his lists of accomplishments, how the crowd always gave him a standing ovation.

“Dr. Wilbert ‘SkeeterMcClure is a true champion and a class act. No American boxer will ever accomplish what he did.

I first met Wilbert at the 1964 National AAU Championships,” 1972 Olympisk bronsemedalje Jesse Valdez kommen. “I had just turned 16. I had won the National Golden Gloves for the first time and went to the National AAU and got beaten by Quincy Daniels, who had won a bronze medalist at the 1960 Olympics with Wilbert. I said hello but really didn’t know Wilbert. I was young, shy and kept to myself. I didn’t realize he was an Olympic gold medal winner until later, while taking with the other guys. I was really impressed by his background.

Wilbert is somebody kids today need to look up to. He’s a great example for kids coming up and dreaming about winning an Olympic gold medal. And Wilbert went on to get an education. He’s a great example for kids today in the program (USA Boxing).”

Legendary amateur boxing coach Roosevelt Sanders, who last year was inducted into the first class of the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame, lost to McClure in the 1960 USA Olympic Trials.

“Han (McClure) has always been nice to me,” Sanders added. “I didn’t know him, personlig, but met him, fought him, and saw him fight on television. He’s a smart guy, always a gentleman, and being a U.S. Marine, we were taught to absorb that.

I 1961, McClure turned pro and he was billed as the next Sugar Ray Robinson, largely due their similar boxing style. No endorsements, skjønt, and the odds were really stacked against McClure reaching the same heights as a pro that he had attained as an amateur. During the early part of his professional career, McClure served in the U.S. Army, attended college and was married with a baby. After only 14 pro kamper, the mismanaged McClure was rushed into difficult matches against the likes of future world champions and Hall of Famers Luis Rodriguez (to ganger) og Jose Torres, plus No. 1 kandidat Ruben “Orkan” Carter (to ganger), fra 1963 til 1966. McClure was on the losing end of four of those five fights, all by decisions, but he did fight Carter to a draw.

McClure retired from the ring in 1970 med en 24-9 (12 KOs) profesjonell rekord. He eventually resettled in the Boston suburb of Chestnut Hill, where he taught at Northeastern University and later was a consultant to industry and government, teaching administrators how to deal with people.
