BOXING LEGEND AND FUTURE HALL-OF-FAMER BERNARD HOPKINS CELEBRATES 50

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 15, 2015) – Boxing legend Bernard Hopkins is known by many names – “The Executioner,” “The Alien” and “B-Hop” to name a few. Beginning today, he will have yet another moniker – “50-year-old.”

This is an important milestone in the life of the future Hall of Famer. He is celebrating a birthday that for most athletes comes long after their retirement. It is remarkable that he is not only still active, but just months removed from fighting at the very pinnacle of his sport.

Hopkins is a surefire first ballot addition to the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) when he becomes eligible. His decade-long run as world champion, combined with unifying all of the belts in the division, gives him a claim to being the greatest middleweight of all time. The fact that he put together a second-career that saw him unify light heavyweight titles lends credence to Hopkins’ claims that he is “not of this world.”

“I come from an old school of boxing where you fight the best out there and prove yourself,” said Hopkins. “I want to be an example for the young fighters coming up that in order to be successful in the sport, you have to protect yourself at all times. That means in and out of the ring. I’ve been able to do that as I am still fighting while also celebrating my 50th birthday. This is my testament to success.”

Throughout his career Hopkins never backed down from facing the best. His fight-by-fight reads like a who’s who of Hall of Famers, world champions and top-flight boxers. Hopkins faced all three fighters inducted into the IBHOF in 2014, having beaten Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad and dropping a decision to Joe Calzaghe. He holds multiple records for his run at middleweight, including the longest reign as world champion (10 years, two months and 17 days) and for the most consecutive title defenses (20).

At light heavyweight and into his forties he continued to make history. In May 2011, Hopkins defeated Jean Pascal for the WBC Light Heavyweight World Championship, passing George Foreman as the oldest boxer to ever win a world title (46 years, four months and six days).

He broke his own record two years later when he defeated Tavoris Cloud for the IBF Light Heavyweight World Championship (48 years, one month and 22 days). In 2014 he set another record as he became the oldest fighter to unify world titles when he defeated Beibut Shumenov to add the WBA Light Heavyweight World Championship to his IBF crown.

“No one can deny the legacy that I’ve created in this sport. I am really proud of what I did, who I fought, how I matured along the way. I feel really good about something no one can take away or deny my place in the sports’ history,” said Hopkins.

Hopkins’ does hope to leave a legacy beyond the sport of boxing, specifically as a pillar of health and fitness for the African-American community and the over-40 crowd. Both of Hopkins’ parents passed away before the age of 50, due to complications of diabetes and heart disease. This has led the champ on his crusade for clean living that gives him satisfaction in the organic foods that he cooks himself.

“We only live once and our bodies are our temples. I am not going to eat something that is not good for my system,” said Hopkins. “I fuel myself with energy producing foods. Without this daily habit my body would have given up on me a long time ago.”

Hopkins has also long fought for the rights of his fellow boxers. Famously testifying before Congress in support of the Muhammad Ali act. In 2014, Hopkins appeared at the United States Capitol building to help raise the profile of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health’s comprehensive study of professional boxers and the effect their sport has on their brain.

In the last decade, Hopkins has been contributing to the sport as a promoter. Since his 2005 middleweight title unification bout with Oscar De La Hoya, Hopkins and “The Golden Boy” have formed a partnership with Hopkins owning a percentage of Golden Boy Promotions and helping promote their fights all over the country.

On January 20th, Golden Boy will honor Hopkins’ 50th birthday with a special edition of Golden Boy Live! on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes live from the 2300 Arena in Hopkins’ hometown of Philadelphia. Philly’s own Eric “The Outlaw” Hunter will headline the night of fights. He will take on Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado in a 10-round featherweight bout.

“I believe in investing in this sport and that means stepping up to the plate as an athlete and as a promoter,” said Hopkins. “I have an opportunity and a responsibility to the fighters and the fans to make this sport the best it can be.”

Whether you admire him for his work inside the ring, or the way he lives his life outside, there is no denying that Hopkins is one-of-a-kind. When he eventually leaves the sport it will be bittersweet, as he once said:

“Enjoy this while you can. Don’t worry about when or how I’m going to leave or break down. You guys are all humans, I understand you, but you don’t understand me.”

Wish Bernard a ‘Happy Birthday’ on Twitter @TheRealBHop and use the hashtag #BHOP50.

‘Sugar’ Ray Robinson vs. Ralph ‘Tiger’ Jones on Fight Network this Sunday night

Ultimate Classic Boxing on Fight Network USA

‘Sugar’ Ray Robinson vs. Ralph ‘Tiger’ Jones

Sunday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (Jan. 14, 2015) – Fight Network USA will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ralph “Tiger” Jones‘ major upset of legendary “Sugar” Ray Robinson, arguably the greatest boxer of all-time, by airing their fight this Sunday night (Jan. 18) as part of its Ultimate Classic Boxing series from 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET.

Fight Network is the world’s premier combat sports network dedicated to 24/7 coverage, including fights, fighters, fight news and fight lifestyle. The channel is available in the U.S. on Cablevision in parts of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, Texas-based Grande Communications, Armstrong Cable in Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, as well as on Shentel Cable in Virginia, West Virginia and portions of western Maryland. Fight Network is also on Roku set top boxes throughout America, and streaming live on website KlowdTV.com.

Robinson was a multiple world welterweight and middleweight champion, when there were only eight weight classes, during his illustrious 25-year professional boxing career (1940-1965) in which he compiled an eye-opening 173-19-6 (108 KOs) record. The flashy Hall of Famer had an incredible 132-3-2 record when he fought Jones (32-12-3) on Jan. 19, 1955 at Chicago Stadium.

Robinson retired in 1952 after being stopped for the first time in his career by world light heavyweight champion Joey Maxim, when “Sugar Ray” was unable to continue after 13 rounds due to heat prostration from fighting outdoors at Yankee Stadium in 104 degree heat (Robinson led 10-3, 9-3-1 and 7-3-3 in rounds scored). At 33, Robinson came out of retirement 2 ½ years later and the Jones fight was the second of his comeback.

Jones, known as a very aggressive fighter, upset Robinson in this fight by way of a one-sided 10-round decision (100-88, 99-94, 98-89). The New Yorker went on to upset two other Hall of Famers, Joey Giardello and Kid Gavilan.

Later that same year in 1955, Robinson defeated Carl “Bobo” Olson for the world middleweight title, something he did on two other occasions before he finally retired for good. Jones never got a world title shot. Robinson died in 1989 at the age of 67, Jones in 1994 at 66.

Also airing this Sunday evening on Fight Network, starting at 11:00 p.m. ET onBanner: Best of the Decade is undefeated WBA and WBO super featherweight champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas (32-0) successfully defending his world title belts March 15, 2003 against challenger Juan Carlos “El Ranchero” Ramirez (29-4) with a fourth-round technical knockout at UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

This Sunday night’s boxing on Fight Network starts at 7:30 p.m. ET with KOTV Boxing Weekly, which covers all the latest news in professional boxing, features full recent fights and highlights. Sandwiched between Robinson vs. Jones and Freitas vs. Ramirez from 9:00 p.m. ET-11:00 p.m. ET is a replay of the European super featherweight title fight between Devis “Boom Boom” Boschiero (32-1-1) and Samir Kasmi (15-9-1) from March 23, 2013 in Veneto, Italy.

BANTAMWEIGHT BATTLE ADDED TO LEWISTON PRO CARD

Lewiston, Maine (January 14, 2015) –New England Fights (NEF), America’s number-one regional fight promotion, presents its sixteenth mixed martial arts (MMA) event, “NEF XVI,” on February 7, 2015 in Lewiston, Maine.  The event is scheduled to originate from the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Earlier today, NEF announced the addition of a professional bantamweight bout to the fight card.  Matt “Ken Doll” Denning (1-0) will step into the cage to face Jovan White (1-6) at a fight weight of 135-pounds.

Denning was victorious in his professional debut at “NEF XV” this past November over Derek Shorey (1-1) in the first round.  The early-going in that fight was controlled by Shorey.  Denning, seconds after absorbing two powerful slams on the back of his neck, submitted Shorey with an armbar.  He will look to repeat his success on February 7 in Lewiston, Maine.

“I’m extremely confident going into this fight, I’ve been training hard and consistent since I fought Caleb Costello almost a year ago,” said Denning when reached for comment.  “I’ve been training different things and learning tons more now that I’m training for pro style fighting.”

A 2008 graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine, Denning learned his craft in recent years at Central Maine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (CMBJJ) – a Team New England United (NEU) affiliate – under head coach Travis Wells.  Denning had a stellar amateur career to prepare him for the pro ranks.  He went 4-3, facing stiff competition like Dom Cofone (5-5), Jay Perrin (5-1 amateur, now 1-0 pro) and Jeremy Tyler (4-3) to name a few.  Win or lose, Denning’s fights have always been exciting and action-packed.  He predicts much of the same in his pending bout with Jovan White.

“I’ve watched the fights that I can find of Jovan and I think he’s gonna come out hard and explosive,” Denning continued.  “This fight is going to be exciting. I’m bringing everything I have and going for a back to back pro wins.  I see the fight ending in the first by either TKO or submission.  I’ll show how powerful I am. I look forward to fighting Jovan.”

White is no stranger to the NEF MMA cage.  In September 2013, White arrived in the Pine Tree State for the first time and scored an upset submission victory over Tommy Balzano (1-4).  White is a member of Team Riot MMA based in Orange Park, Florida, where he trains with the likes of number-one contender to the NEF MMA Lightweight Title Jamie Harrison (5-1) and number-one contender to the NEF MMA Heavyweight Title Terry Blackburn (5-2).  White will look to play the role of spoiler in Matt Denning’s sophomore professional effort.

NEF’s next MMA event, “NEF XVI,” takes place on February 7, 2015 with an all-star lineup of fights scheduled.  NFL and UFC The Ultimate Fighter veteran Tyler King (7-2) puts the NEF MMA Heavyweight Title on the line against Terry “The Polar Bear” Blackburn (5-2).  In the feature bout of the evening, UFC, Bellator and Strikeforce veteran Nah-Shon Burrell (10-5) makes his NEF MMA debut against Ryan Hodge (6-9).  Tickets start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com or by calling The Colisee box office at 207.783.2009 x 525.  For more information on the event and fight card updates, please visit the promotion’s website at www.NewEnglandFights.com. In addition, you can watch NEF videos at www.youtube.com/NEFMMA, follow them on Twitter @nefights and join the official Facebook group “New England Fights.”
