COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Febbraio 26, 2019) – USA Boxing Alumni Association’s tribute this past weekend to two of New England’s all-time greatest amateur boxers, Vinny “The Pazmanian Devil” Paz e “Irlandese” Micky Ward, was a major success at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

A sold-out fundraiser to benefit the USA Boxing Alumni Association was held at Fred & Steve’s Steakhouse on Friday evening, honoring Paz and Ward, in addition to Hall of Fame referee Steve Smoger, who officiated numerous fights for both fighters.

Paz and Ward held a meet-and-greet Saturday night, prior to a CES Boxing event, as the popular boxers signed autographs and posed for pictures. They were brought into the ring, along with Smoger, and received a standing applause from the large crowd in attendance.



USA Boxing Alumni Association’s back-to-back nights at Twin River raised $3,000 (including proceeds from Sportsworld’s memorabilia auction) and added 20 new alumni members, including Paz, to its growing ranks.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Dicembre 3, 2018) – Il due volte medaglia d'oro olimpica Claressa Shields non solo sta conducendo una nuova ondata nel pugilato femminile, si è sviluppato in un vero e proprio modello per innumerevoli giovani.

 

 

 

Shields sarà inserito nella Boxing USA Alumni Association Hall of Fame questo Venerdì sera a Salt Lake City, insieme con la classe di 2018 membri Roy Jones Jr. e, Andre Ward, così come alla fine degli anni Emanuel Stewarte Tom Cleary.

 

 

 

La seconda edizione del Boxing USA Alumni Association Hall of Fame di ricezione, organizzato in concomitanza con la 2018 USA Boxing Elite e Campionati Nazionali Giovanili e Junior e Prep Aperto, Dicembre 2-8, si terrà dicembre 7, presso il Radisson Hotel (215 S. Tempio di St.) a Salt Lake City, Utah.

 

 

 

“mi sento onorato,” Shields ha parlato di essere inserito nella Boxing USA Alumni Association Hall of Fame,” sono solo 23 anni e di essere inserito negli Stati Uniti Boxing Hall of Fame è un grande onore, ma anche uno shock per me. Credo di essere degno di ogni onore, ma so che le cose prendono tempo, e ho sempre pensato che avrei messo nella Hall of Fame all'età 40 o 50. Questo è un grosso problema per me e mi sento così onorata. Solo per avere il mio nome citato insieme a nomi di grandi come Andre Ward e Roy Jones solo veramente mi motiva. Mi sento privilegiato!”

 

 

 

L'orgoglio di Flint, Michigan, Shields ha già sfruttato con successo il suo successo dilettanti a ranghi professionali, in cui è 7-0 (2), e il campione in carica unificato (IBF, WBA & WBC) medio campione mondo.

 

 

 

Shields finito la sua carriera amatoriale con un incredibile 77-1 (18 KO) record, evidenziata dai suoi olimpici medaglia d'oro performance in 2012 e 2016. Lei non ha perso sul ring dal 2012, quando Savannah Marshall (Inghilterra) ha vinto ai punti, 14-8, ai Campionati del Mondo in Cina.

 

 

 

“USA Boxing è entrato nella mia vita come un due volte campione Junior Olympic,” Claressa ha spiegato il suo rapporto USA Boxing. “L'aiuto da USA Boxing era così importante: solo a me notando come un giovane atleta e sapendo che sarebbe un forte e giovane donna a rappresentare gli Stati Uniti in futuro; incontro Julie Goldsticker, che era una benedizione per me, come lei mi ha aiutato con un sacco come un adolescente, e solo per avere Coach Abdullah, allenatore Al Mitchell, e allenatore Gloria Peek insegnami diversi stili e modalità di utilizzo di tutti i miei attributi. Shields è una delle forze trainanti nel pugilato femminile di oggi, portando la fiaccola consegnata fuori da American pionieri boxe femminile come ad esempio Christy Martin, Laila Ali e pochi altri.

 

 

 

“C'è grande cambiamento in corso in questo momento — me, Mikaela Mayer, Crews Franchon, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano e poche altre donne stanno portando la torcia per il pugilato femminile in questo momento,” Shields ha spiegato. “I progressi sono stati veloci, ogni rete ha avuto lotta delle donne in televisione di quest'anno, soprattutto Showtime, su cui ho inscatolato l'evento principale per quattro volte. boxe femminile può andare lontano. Credo che il giorno verrà in cui si può essere pagato milioni, proprio come gli uomini.”

“Ci si sente bene ad essere un modello per loro (femmine), e anche per tanti pugili di sesso maschile,” Shields ha osservato. “La boxe è in un'epoca diversa e voglio solo per rendere più facile per le ragazze in arrivo, così quando si rivolgono pro, boxe sarà più vicino alla parità.”

 

 

 

“Claressa ha una delle più grandi storie nella storia del pugilato dilettantistico,” suddetto Chris Tofflemire, USA Boxing Alumni Association direttore esecutivo. “La sua unità, impegno, talento, e il carattere di lei ha fatto un USA Boxing e campione olimpico, lasciando un'eredità che durerà per un tempo molto lungo. Lei è un apripista per la boxe femminile e ha stabilito il suo posto come uno dei più influenti Boxing USA Alumni membri di tutti i tempi. Nonostante tutti gli onori e riconoscimenti, che ha ricevuto così riccamente, Shields non ha dimenticato dove tutto è iniziato, e lei è ancora attivamente coinvolto in USA Boxing.

 

 

 

“Mi tengo in contatto con un sacco di atleti di sesso femminile e dare loro consigli se mi chiedono,” Claressa aggiunto. “Sono anche andato a Colorado per cinque giorni di essere un motivatore e oratore principale per il Hopeful Successivo Olympic. Dopo la mia carriera è finita in circa 15 anni, Voglio essere un allenatore di pugilato e portare la squadra femminile a più medaglie d'oro olimpiche, se data l'opportunità. Voglio anche essere un insegnante di scuola e un consulente per i giovani.”

E 'stato un onore rappresentare l'America, non solo una volta, ma due volte alle Olimpiadi! Ringrazio Coach Manganello (Walsh) per avermi fatto scavare in profondità, avendo a che fare con le sue vie e le battute irlandesi, anche per cambiare la cultura di USA Boxing. Uno speciale ringraziamento ad allenare Kay, anche, Non posso contare sulle mie mani quanti giorni ci siamo allenati a 1 antimeridiano, quante volte ho bussato alla sua porta della stanza e corse, quante volte ha dovuto prendere il mio telefono da me perché stavo piangendo o che hanno un problema familiare. Lui è l'allenatore ho potuto dire tutto a, e anche lui mi ha benedetto con la sua conoscenza boxe e mi ha fatto sentire sempre sicuro in me stesso quando era in un angolo. USA Boxing non è solo personale – USA Boxing è la famiglia! Anche se ho avuto qualche parola con Matthew Johnson e altro personale, Li ringrazio per essere stato duro con me e fare in modo ho gestito le mie responsabilità. L'amore a tutto il personale USA Boxing, Sono veramente grato.”

 

 

 

Claressa Shields è molto più di mondo e campione olimpionico, lei è un atto di classe pure, esattamente ciò che è così disperatamente bisogno oggi.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Novembre 19, 2018) – Il tardo Emanuel Steward, arguably the greatest boxing trainer of all-time, is a member of the Class of 2018 essere inserito nella Hall of Fame della USA Boxing Alumni Association.

Steward was a boxer, trainer extraordinaire, and HBO commentator until his untimely death in 2012 all'età di 68. His boxing career culminated with his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996.

 

 

 

All'età di 12, Manny moved with his mother from West Virginia to Detroit, where his life soon turned to boxing. Come un pugile dilettante, he compiled a 94-3 record, evidenziata da una performance medaglia d'oro al 1963 National Golden Gloves Tournament as a bantamweight, but he decided against trying out for the US Olympic Boxing Team.

 

 

 

In 1971, Steward became a part-time trainer at Kronk Gym, where he eventually guided many of the country’s top amateur boxers. Kronk Gym later became a property of Steward’s and he developed it into one of the most successful and famous boxing gyms in the world.

 

 

 

 

 

Steward also served as National Director of Coaching for USA Boxing in the early 2000’s.

 

 

 

Throughout his incredible career, Steward reportedly trained 41 campioni del mondo, forse, the most noteworthy were Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis e Wladimir Klitschko. He also trained Julio Cesar Chavez, Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, Naseem Hamed, Evander Holyfield, e Mike McCallum. Manny also trained a young Detroit rapper, Eminem, how to box at Kronk Gym.

 

 

 

The last world champion Manny trained was Adone “Superuomo” Stevenson, who remains the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) World light heavyweight champion since 2013.

 

 

 

“Emanuel would always say, ko vendono!” Stevenson fondly remembered. “He was also the first to tell me, ‘You will be a superstar and a world champion. Just make sure you don’t listen to people with bad intentions because you’ve got natural talent.’ He believed in me even if some people did not think I would ever become a world champion.”

 

 

 

“Emanuel Steward impacted the lives of so many who walked through the doors of Kronk Gym,” suddetto Chris Tofflemire, USA Boxing Alumni Association direttore esecutivo. “While he’s most recognized for his achievement at the professional level, his impact was significant in the amateurs. Manny serves as a model coach for USA Boxing today, and his impact will be felt for a long time. The USA Boxing Alumni Association overwhelmingly supports his induction and looks forward to honoring him as part of this year’s Hall of Fame class.”

“For years he would come to my National Silver Gloves Tournament that I sponsored and put on in Kansa City just to show his support of the youth program,” added USA Boxing president Giovanni Marrone aggiunto. “Every year I would tell him to let me know if he was coming, so I could VIP him, and every year he would ignore me and just quietly show up. I would notice him in the crowd. I would ball him out and then we did the same thing the following year.

 

 

 

“I also used to see him at big fights and he would always make me feel special by saying my company saved boxing in the seventies and eighties by providing safe, well-made, fair priced boxing equipment for the sport. No one else ever gave me that recognition. He was humble and not a blowhard, my kind of guy.”

 

 

 

Emanuel Steward left his mark on earth, not only as a multi-faceted personality in boxing, but he’s also remembered for his magnanimous charity work in Detroit, in which he helped youths in their pursuit of education.

Arbitro di classe mondiale….. Tom Cleary USA Boxing Alumni Association, Classe di 2018 inductee

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Novembre 12, 2018) – Il tardo Tom Cleary è stato uno degli arbitri più rispettati al mondo durante la sua illustre carriera. Si unisce a un gruppo selezionato nella Classe di 2018 essere inserito nella Hall of Fame della USA Boxing Alumni Association.

 

 

 

La seconda edizione del Boxing USA Alumni Association Hall of Fame di ricezione, organizzato in concomitanza con la 2018 USA Boxing Elite e Campionati Nazionali Giovanili e Junior e Prep Aperto, Dicembre 2-8, si terrà dicembre 7, presso il Radisson Hotel (215 S. Tempio di St.) a Salk Lake City, Utah.

 

 

 

Oltre a Cleary, la classe di 2018 include anche gli Stati Uniti. Medagliati a squadre olimpiche e mondiali (professionale) campioni Roy Jones, Jr., Andre Ward e Claressa Shields, così come un ex direttore nazionale di coaching statunitense di boxe, alla fine degli anni Emanuel Steward.

 

 

 

La classe charter introdotta lo scorso anno inclusa Muhammad Ali e Evander Holyfield, così come allenatori veterani Roosevelt Sanders e Tom Coulter.

 

 

 

Un residente di lunga data a Westchester, Ohio, Cleary è stato un membro della boxe negli Stati Uniti da allora 1982, e ha servito come capo degli ufficiali per la National Collegiate Boxing Association da 2002 fino alla sua scomparsa, maggio 21, 2017.

 

 

 

Ha arbitrato 12 paesi diversi, in quattro continenti, come Ufficiale Internazionale assegnato da AIBA. Tom ha ottenuto una valutazione a tre stelle ed è stato selezionato per lavorare alle World Series of Boxing.

 

 

 

“La dedizione di Tom per la boxe amatoriale e il rispetto che ha raccolto dai pugili, allenatori e colleghi ufficiali non sono secondi a nessuno,” suddetto Chris Tofflemire, USA Boxing Alumni Association direttore esecutivo. “L'Associazione Alumni ha sostenuto con enfasi il suo caso per la Hall of Fame, e la sua induzione fu ricevuta da coloro che gli erano vicini, così come l'intera comunità di pugilato dilettantistico. L'impegno di Tom nel servire USA Boxing fornisce un ottimo esempio per tutti noi e non potremmo essere più orgogliosi di chiamarlo un membro della classe Hall of Fame di quest'anno.”

 

 

 

Tom non ha mai dimenticato da dove veniva, dedicando innumerevoli ore ai giovani di Cincinnati, oltre ad aiutare i club di boxe a funzionare in modo efficiente in tutta la sua comunità per più di un quarto di secolo.

 

 

 

Il 2017 Ufficiale dell'anno NCBA, Tom ha lavorato a livello locale, regionale, nazionale, Internazionale, livello mondiale e olimpico di boxe. I punti salienti includevano il lavoro in numerosi Stati Uniti. Campionati Nazionali, quattro Stati Uniti. Trials olimpici (2000, 2004, 2008 & 2012) e la 2007 Campionati del mondo a Chicago.

 

 

 

“Quando ero un giovane allenatore dell'Air Force Academy,” Allenatore di boxe USA Ed Weichers commentato, “dovevamo sostituire un arbitro di prim'ordine dell'AIBA che si stava ritirando. Stavamo cercando una persona altamente qualificata e Tom Cleary è stato consigliato. È uscito il prossimo 25 anni di fila. Tom è stato uno dei migliori arbitri. Teneva così tanto alla sicurezza dei pugili e Tom era anche un prezioso mentore.

 

 

 

“Tom era un uomo meraviglioso che tutti amavano. Ha amministrato cliniche per arbitri negli Stati Uniti e ha sempre aiutato i bisognosi, giovani e adulti. Il lavoro di Tom nell'area di Cincinnati ha influenzato così tanti pugili e allenatori per più di 25 anni. Ci manca moltissimo.”

Tom è sopravvissuto da sua moglie, Diane, i loro due figli e otto nipoti.

 

 

 

La leadership e il mentore di Tom Cleary hanno ispirato tutti coloro che hanno avuto la fortuna di incontrarlo. Amava appassionatamente i pugili con cui condivideva l'anello, offrendo parole di consiglio prima, durante e dopo gli attacchi.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Ottobre 9, 2018) – Un folto gruppo di pugili dilettanti passati e presenti, così come altri coinvolti nello sport, recentemente si è presentato in forza per il primo raduno della USA Boxing Alumni Association sulla costa occidentale.

 

Il raduno inaugurale della West Coast della USA Boxing Alumni Association, tenutasi presso la Fortune Gym di Hollywood (Los Angeles), ha portato a una narrazione memorabile, benvenute riunioni, anche tra i nemici del passato, oltre a un sostanziale aumento del numero di membri.

 

Oltre a sostenitore di boxe amatoriale di lunga data, attore / cantante Frank Stallone, insieme alla madrina della boxe amatoriale, Melanie Ley, frequentando pugili e allenatori passati e presenti inclusi Mickey Bey, Alex Ramos, Maureen Shea, Ronnie Essett, Paul Banks, Jorge Hawley, les Smith, Frank Vassar, Don Deverges, Michael e Anna Keopuhiwa, Zachary Padilla, Lenny Gargaliano, Tony Lesbeur, Felix Nance, Falconee Vince Hudson, Rudy garza, Justine Fortune, Alan Santana, Willie Tubbs, Randy Crippen, Alan Santana, Jacquie Richardson, Steven Stokes, Manny salcido, Jason e Jeremy Williams, Mike Simms, Jeff Bumpus, attuale squadra dei pesi massimi USA Richard Torres (Tulare, COME), e 2018 Campionessa mondiale giovanile e locale di Los Angeles Iyana Verduzco. 1984 Medaglia d'oro olimpica Henry Tilman era presente anche e registrato come nuovo membro dell'Associazione Alumni.

 

 

 

Consigliere di boxe USA e collegamento con i combattenti, “Iceman” John Scully, era responsabile del reclutamento della maggior parte dei partecipanti.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Settembre 6, 2018) – Living legend Roy Jones, Jr., universally recognized as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all-time, leads a celebrated quintet of Class of 2018 inductees into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame.

“I am honored to be selected for induction into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame,” Jones commented, “especially as a member of this great class with my fellow inductees.

 

 

 

“Amateur boxing gave me the chance to learn life skills as well as face every other possible scenario inside of the ring.”

 

 

 

Jones, ironicamente, got into boxing at the age of 11 because of Ali. “I saw Ali vs. (Joe) Frazierand just felt as though Ali and I had the same mental concept on life,” Jones explained.

 

 

 

Jones went on to become one of the best amateur boxers in the world, compiling a reported 121-13 record, including gold medal performances at the 1984 National Junior Olympics and 1986 & 1987 National Golden Gloves Tournaments.

 

 

 

Al 1988 Olimpiadi di Seoul, Corea Del Sud, Jones reached the championship final of the light middleweight division against Park Si-Hun, della Corea del Sud. “I was angered,” Jones admitted, “yet promoted to prove that I was the best fighter there, and in the world, at that time.”

 

 

 

Jones made his professional debut May 6, 1989, at home in Pensacola, Florida, in a scheduled eight-round bout, in which RJJ stopped Ricky Randall nel secondo turno. His long, glorious journey has produced a remarkable 66-9 (47 KO) pro record, highlighted by nine major world titles in four different weight classes.

 

 

 

In 2003, Jones defeated John Ruiz by way of a 12-round unanimous decision to become the first former world middleweight champion to become world heavyweight title holder in more than a century.

 

 

 

The possessor of exceptional hand and foot speed, Atletico, movement and reflexes, Jones went undefeated through his first 34 lotte pro, 22-3 (14) in lotte di titolo mondiale. Against former, present or future world champions, Jones was 19-9 (8 KO) and included among his victims were greats such as Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Mike McCallum,Vinnie Pazienza, Virgil Hill, Antonio Tarver e Felix Trinidad.

For the past two years, Jones has hosted the “Future Stars of Boxing Tournament” a Las Vegas, showcasing some of the best amateur boxers in the world.

 

 

 

“Hosting the tournament in Las Vegas gives me the opportunity to give back to amateur boxing,” Jones explained. “It’s a great experience for the boxers and it reminds them that who they may have or still look up to, are watching them as well.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Agosto 20, 2018) – One of the classiest boxers to ever lace-up a pair of gloves is Dr. Wilbert “Skeeter” McClure, who is the only American boxer to capture an Olympic gold-medal and also earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D).

 

 

 

“When I think of ‘Skeeter’ McClure,” USA Boxing president John Brown suddetto, “I think of the grassroots of our sport. When ‘Skeeter’ was a young boy growing up in Toledo, Ohio, he had a twinkle in his eye and a desire to box. We would learn later in life how talented, gifted and passionate ‘Skeeter’ McClure was about the sport of boxing.

 

 

 

“It would be impossible for me, somebody who has spent his entire life in boxing, to find a better representative of our sport than ‘Skeeter’ McClure.”

 

 

 

Detto “Skeeter” because his father thought he looked no bigger than a mosquito at birth, McClure was born October 29, 1938 in Toledo, Ohio, and he developed into the perfect example of brains and brawn.

 

 

 

The now 79-year-old McClure earned degrees in literature and philosophy in 1961 from the University of Toledo and a doctorate in psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit. He was a professor at Northeastern University and late became a Massachusetts state boxing commissioner. In 2012, he was honored for his life’s work by the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School.

 

 

 

McClure had an incredible boxing career, highlighted by his gold-medal performance at the 1960 Giochi Olimpici, defeating his Italian opponent in Rome, Carmelo Bossi, to capture the light middleweight gold medal, despite fighting with a severely damaged hand suffered in the semifinals. The two other American gold medalists that year was his roommate and team co-captain, Cassius Clay (aka Muhammad Ali) and Eddie Crook, Jr.

 

 

 

During his illustrious amateur career, McClure was dominant in 1959-1960, winning gold medals at the 1959 Pan-American Games, two-time National AAU tournaments, 1958 International Diamond Belt. He was also named Outstanding U.S. Amateur Boxer in 1959.

 

Al Valenti, Special Projects Consultant for USA Boxing, has known McClure as long as anybody alive, “I had the pleasure of meeting ‘Skeeter’ McClure in the late eighties,” Valenti noted, “and since the day I met him I’ve held him in the highest esteem. I cannot find another boxer who has achieved what ‘Skeeter’ has during his life in boxing. He was a talented amateur boxer who won at every level and, beyond that, he served in the U.S. Esercito, earned a Ph.D in psychology, and he also had a long career as a college professor. One thing that stands out among his accomplishments is that he’s the kindest, most sincere gentlemen I’ve ever met.

 

 

 

“During his tenure on the Massachusetts Boxing Commission, he fully understood the sport and what was needed. As a promoter, I was never busier than when he oversaw boxing in Massachusetts. One of the highlights of my life is when I introduced ‘Skeeter’ to crowds at our events, after listening to his lists of accomplishments, how the crowd always gave him a standing ovation.

 

 

 

“Dr. Wilbert ‘Skeeter” McClure is a true champion and a class act. No American boxer will ever accomplish what he did.”

 

 

 

“I first met Wilbert at the 1964 Campionati nazionali AAU,” 1972 Medaglia di bronzo olimpica Jesse Valdez commentato. “I had just turned 16. Legendary amateur boxing coach Roosevelt Sanders, who last year was inducted into the first class of the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame, lost to McClure in the 1960 USA Olympic Trials.

 

 

 

“Lui (McClure) has always been nice to me,” Sanders added. “Non lo conoscevo, personalmente, but met him, fought him, and saw him fight on television. He’s a smart guy, always a gentleman, and being a U.S. Marino, we were taught to absorb that.”

 

 

 

In 1961, McClure turned pro and he was billed as the next Sugar Ray Robinson, largely due their similar boxing style. No endorsements, anche se, and the odds were really stacked against McClure reaching the same heights as a pro that he had attained as an amateur. During the early part of his professional career, McClure served in the U.S. Esercito, attended college and was married with a baby. After only 14 lotte pro, the mismanaged McClure was rushed into difficult matches against the likes of future world champions and Hall of Famers Luis Rodriguez (due volte) e Jose Torres, plus No. 1 contendente Ruben “Uragano” Carrettiere (due volte), da 1963 a 1966. McClure was on the losing end of four of those five fights, all by decisions, but he did fight Carter to a draw.

 

 

 

McClure retired from the ring in 1970 con 24-9 (12 KO) record professionale. He eventually resettled in the Boston suburb of Chestnut Hill, where he taught at Northeastern University and later was a consultant to industry and government, teaching administrators how to deal with people.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Luglio 30, 2018) – 2004 U.S. Olimpionico Jason “Big Six” Strada fully believes that boxing saved his life, preventing him from running the streets of Providence, Rhode Island, and molding him into the man he is today.

 

 

 

“I didn’t have any money growing up and could have easily gone the other way in the streets,” Estrada explained. “A lot of my friends from back then were selling drugs are many are either dead or in jail. I knew them all, they knew me. Instead of becoming a drug dealer, I beat them up and took their money. I could have easily ended up seller drugs on a bigger scale, shot them, or gotten shot by them. I was broke, but boxing saved me!”

 

 

 

Estrada’s first amateur match was in 1987, when he was only seven years old, and he developed into one of the most dominant amateur boxers in the world between 2001-2003, in which he was a “three-peat” champion at the USA National Championships, PAL National Championships and U.S. Sfida. “Big Six” also remains the only American boxer to capture a gold medal in the super heavyweight division of the Pan-American Games (2003), in addition to representing the U.S. nel 2004 Olimpiadi di Atene, Grecia.

 

 

 

After qualifying for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, much of the pre-Olympic Games boxing interest surrounded an expected showdown between the top two super heavyweights in the world, Estrada and Russia’s Alexander Povetin. Sfortunatamente, Estrada was hampered by a severe case of planta faucitis, which left Jason in an air cast and unable to train other than swimming throughout the entire pre-Olympics camp. Estrada won in the opening round, but he was eliminated in the second by Cuban Michel Lopes, who Estrada had fairly easily defeated in the championship final of the 2003 Pan-American Games. Povetkin went on to capture the gold medal.

 

 

 

“I would have loved to fight him” Estrada said. “I was super sharp, mentalmente, but physically I couldn’t bounce and move. I just had to deal with it. I found out that it was amazing how quickly people forget in boxing.”

 

 

 

Not only does Estrada credit his father, optometrist Dr. Roland Estrada, for helping to keep him on the straight and narrow, he also taught him to box. “My father didn’t have any boxing experience when we started,” Jason noted. “We went from gym to gym, sparring guys, and picking up things from other coaches. I appreciated my father so much because he always knew that his style wasn’t the only style. We experienced different styles and met some great coaches. Two of my favorite coaches are Barry Hunter (Washington DC.) e Mike Stafford (Cincinnati). I’m cool with fighters I met in the amateurs like Andre Dirrell. The guy I’m closest with is George Garcia, who I fought and beat nine times. He’s one of my coolest friends, anche se. His son is a good prospect coming up, but he’s the opposite of his father, who was short and stocky. His son is a tall, lanky boxer.”

Estrada fought professionally for more than a decade, la compilazione di un 20-6 (6 KO) record, as an unusually quick-handed, slick-moving heavyweight. Oggi, Estrada and his father own and operate Big Six Academy in Providence, coaching amateur and pro boxers.

 

 

 

“Boxing is like a marriage,” commented Estrada, who retired from the ring 3 ½ years ago. “Mi piace, but we’re not together anymore. We’re still good friends. I still love boxing as a friend. I get my boxing fix by coaching, it’s still a part of my life. I spar with some of the fighters. I can do what I want for four rounds. There’s no challenge, no pressure. I could still fight, if not for the rigorous training. Physical problems I had when I fought – indietro, knee and feet – no longer hurt.

 

 

 

“My dad understands the knowledge I have – he never fought – and a lot of times in the gym we’ll say to each other, ‘I was just thinking that.’ He has no experience (fighting in the ring) e ora, he lets me handle all the pads work. He’s putting more and more on me, work wise, but he closely watches us and takes care of the business end.

 

 

 

“I really enjoy helping our fighters prepare for media interviews. I’m thankful to USA Boxing for that, because we were trained to be in the right state of mind for interviews.”

 

 

 

Estrada had an opportunity to travel the world as a member of USA Boxing’s elite teams, boxing in Cuba, Dominican Republic Kazakhstan, Irlanda (3 volte), Germany and Brazil.

 

 

 

Now giving back to young boxers what he learned in USA Boxing ranks, the 37-year-old Estrada has one boxing goal left on his wish list.

 

 

 

“I’d love to work with somebody who becomes world champion and makes money to support their family,” Estrada concluded, “but more than anything, I’d love to work with a boxer who becomes a U.S. Olympian because I was a U.S. Olympian.”

 

 

 

And nobody can ever take that away from Jason “Big Six” Strada, one of America’s most decorated amateur boxers of all-time, and a proud USA Boxing Alumni Association member.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Giugno 25, 2018) – USA Boxing’s “Alumni Association Membership Drive Month” concludes this Saturday with another gathering as Mohegan Sun and Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing support the first-year group’s efforts to connect USA Boxing’s alumni.

 

 

 

USA Boxing Alumni Association (USABAA) is asking present members from New England and New York to bring a guest to register as new member ($40.00 registration). Both the current and new members will receive complimentary tickets, mentre il 40 donated tickets last, to that evening’s “Slugfest al The Sun” pro boxing card, presented at Mohegan Sun Arena by Star Boxing.

 

 

 

Headliner Joe “La Bestia” Fabbro, Jr. (23-2, 19 KO) is a former amateur standout from Long Island, NY, chi è il n. 3 e No. 7-ranked light heavyweight in the world, rispettivamente, by the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association.

 

 

 

All USABAA members are invited to attend a gathering prior to the fights at Bow & Arrow Sports Bar at Mohegan Sun, fra 5 a 6:30 p.m. E, to enjoy food, conversation and reunite to friends in boxing.
