GLOVER VACATES; A NEW LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION TO BE CROWNED AT NEF 25

It was a bitterly cold night in Lewiston last February when Ryan Glover (3-1) won the New England Fights (NEF) losakanizika asilikali-zaluso (MMA) amateur light-heavyweight title. The months to come would see Glover accept a new job that would take him up and down the East Coast. With little time to train to defend the title, and in the interest of doing right by the division, Glover recently made the difficult decision to relinquish the championship.

NEF executives were quick to act. Poyambirira lero, the fight promotion announced that Victor Irwin (2-0) would meet Nick Shea (2-0) to fill the vacancy. The two undefeated athletes are scheduled to face-off to determine a new light-heavyweight champion at “NEF 25: HEROES & VILLAINS” paSeptember 10, 2016 mu Lewiston.

Irwin was a standout wrestler at Brewer High School in Brewer, Maine at 195-pounds where he was a Class-A state champion. His love for the sport is so strong that when Irwin attended Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) and learned the school did not have a wrestling program, he created one himself. As a college freshman in 2014 Irwin went to Nationals and achieved All-American status. He currently trains out of Young’s MMA in Bangor, Maine.

I’ve thought a lot about this fight and I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter what I say,” said Irwin, “it matters what I do, ndipo anabwera September 10thyou’re gonna see some serious doing.

2015 was a great start to the MMA career of Nick Shea. In February of that year, he won his debut fight over the much more experienced Jacob Cameron (1-5) kudzera woyamba chonse luso knockout. Later in the year, Shea would go on to defeat Ruben Redman (0-1) by decision in a hard-fought contest. It would earn Shea a nomination for the “Rookie pa Chaka” mu 2015 NEF Year-End Awards. Pa September 10 mu Lewiston, Shea will attempt to become the first member of the First Class MMA fight team to capture gold in the NEF cage.

It’s an honor to fight someone from Young’s MMA,” said Shea. “I believe this will be my biggest test in the cage to date. I’m grateful and excited to compete for the amateur light heavyweight title. Victor and I will put on an exciting fight on Loweruka, September 10th!”

Lewiston, Maine (September 3, 2015) - New England Kumenyana (NEF), America wa nambala wani dera nkhondo Kukwezeleza, adzakangamira ake khumi ndi chisanu losakanizika karate-zaluso (MMA) chochitika, “NEF XIX,” lachiwelu, September 12, 2015 pa Androscoggin Bank Colisée mu Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature three members of First Class MMA in action that night. Hannah Sparrell (0-0), Rafael Velado (0-0) ndipo Nick Shea (1-0) kuchokera Brunswick, Maine-based gym. Posachedwapa, Choyamba Maphunziro MMA woyambitsa ndi mutu mphunzitsi John “Choyamba Maphunziro” Ray anagwirizana NEF co-mwini ndi uje amange banja Mat Peterson monga mlendo pa NEF Podcast.

Izi kale June, 38-year-old Raio retired after competing in the NEF cage for some three-and-a-half years. Raio now concentrates on training the members of his First Class MMA gym, monga kukonzekera Sparrell, Velado ndi Shea awo adziwitse mwauchidakwa.

“Ine ndithudi tikhoza kuika zambiri nthawi mwanga omenyana komanso banja langa,” Anati Ray. “Omenyana, I can put a lot more time into them because it’s not all about me. When you’re fighting, pamene inu kuphunzitsa kwa ndewu, ziribe kanthu momwe inu muyesera kuganizira Nick Shea kapena Nick Gully kapena Hannah Sparrell kapena Rafael kapena wathu omenyana, simungakwanitse kuika 100% effort into a fighter when you really focus on your own fight. It’s tough splitting between their fight and your fight and your job, anu komanso ana anu.”

Popeza kubadwa kwa NEF kumayambiriro 2012, ndipo anayamba kuphulika kwa masewera a kutchuka m'chigawo, ambiri atsopano gyms anapezeka zaposachedwapa, including First Class MMA. Raio enjoys, koposa china chilichonse, ndi zolimba ogwirizana, ngati a banja m'mlengalenga kuti zachitika pa malo popeza iye anatsegula masewero olimbitsa.

“Lalikulu chinthu Ndimakonda wathu masewero olimbitsa, Ndimasangalala akupita komanso kukhala gawo la, pali ndi wodzichepetsa kwambiri gulu la ophunzira ndi aphunzitsi,” noted Raio. “Everyone who teaches in there is about the fighters. It’s about the students. They’re not about themselves. They’re more about trying to help people get better. Whether they’re a fighter or a teacher, we have a few teachers who go there and we have several women students and several children and adults. It’s a real good mix and very much a family atmosphere. We rarely lose a student.

The “Choyamba Maphunziro” moniker is not merely a nickname given to Raio because of his past job with the postal service. Early on in his MMA career, Raio zinatsala mbiri ya waulemu, apamwamba, akatswiri, likeable munthu, hence the pun in his nickname. Those same qualities have carried over to the students of First Class MMA.

“Ndimayesetsa kumathandizira aliyense mofanana,” Anati Ray. “I try to treat everyone respectfully. I think a lot of those guys (pa masewero olimbitsa), panthawi yake, treat each other respectfully. If I ever have an issue with a student, ngati iwo akuchita aulemu kwa aphunzitsi kapena ophunzira ena, I’ll pull them aside and if they have to leave then they have to leave. That’s part of life… Yathu masewero olimbitsa amakopa, zifukwa zina, anthu basi anthu abwino.”

Ndi zambiri latsopano ophunzira kubwera kudzera masewero olimbitsa pakhomo, Raio has definitely kept busy since his retirement from active competition. Like a proud father, Raio has a real passion for the success of his students. The ultimate reward for him is seeing his protégées do well in the cage.

“Pambuyo otsiriza amasonyeza (NEF XVIII), nditaona Nick (Gulliver, 1-0) kuti dzanja lake anamuukitsa ndi Rob (Robinson, 1-0), Ndinasangalala kwambiri anthu anyamata,” recalled Raio. “I’m so happy to see these two guys win. As much as I didn’t come away with a win against Bruce (Boyington, 10-8), Ine ndinati 'tikapita 2-1, I’d rather be the one that didn’t pull off the victory.I’ve never been as happy for my own win than I was for Nick and Rob that night.
