The fight card will feature a mix of mixed-martial-arts (MMA) and professional boxing bouts. Poyambirira lero, NEF announced the addition of an amateur heavyweight bout to the MMA portion of the “NEF 22” nkhondo khadi. Nick Gulliver (2-0) adzakumana Dave Smith (2-1) at a fight weight of 265-pounds.

Nick Gulliver is a product of John Raio’s First Class MMA gym of Brunswick, Maine, as well as the Foundry – ku Brazil Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) academy located in Farmington, Maine. He made his amateur debut last June at “NEF XVIII,” submitting Sonny Spratt (0-2) mu woyamba wozungulira. Gulliver followed up that victory with a technical knockout (WHO) win over Jason Field (0-2) this past November a mere 12-seconds into the first round. He hopes another win on April 23rd will put him in line for a shot at the NEF MMA Amateur Heavyweight Title currently held by Billy Leahy (3-1).

I’m looking forward to fighting again for NEF on April 23rd, and I’m thankful for the opportunity that Matt Peterson and Nick Disalvo give me to fight for their amazing organization,” said Gulliver. “I’ll be fighting who I think is now the number one heavyweight fighter fighting for NEF, Dave Smith. This kid is a great fighter and good athlete. I’m looking forward to a great fight. I fight for two amazing schools and organizations, the Foundry and First Class MMA. This fight will be the first time I won’t be fighting in front of my father who is sick. It’s a lot for him to go to these events being so sick and on oxygen all the time. But my father stated he would make it to one last fight if I get a title shot. I think fighting Dave Smith and winning would put me in a good spot to fight for a title. I’m looking to get that fight in front of my father who pushes me to be the man I am today. Choncho, for three rounds on April 23rd, I’ll be pushing harder than I have in the past to get that opportunity. I’m always looking to impress the crowd. I think fighting someone like Smith will keep the crowd on their feet.

Dave Smith is a member of Berserkers MMA based out of Rumford, Maine. Smith has an extensive wrestling background, having gone 147-17 while competing for Mountain Valley High School (MVHS) and winning two state titles in the process. He also wrestled for Plymouth State University (PSU) in New Hampshire. Like Gulliver, Smith finished his first two opponents in the opening round. He is looking to bounce back from a loss to Brendan Battles (2-0) pa “NEF 21” mwezi watha.

I’m glad to be on another NEF card,” exclaimed Smith. “I am also very excited to be fighting Nick Gully. Nick has had a couple impressive wins and I think this will be a good fight! So get ready because it’s going to be a hell of a show.

“Ine ndithudi tikhoza kuika zambiri nthawi mwanga omenyana komanso banja langa,” Anati Ray. “Omenyana, I can put a lot more time into them because it’s not all about me. When you’re fighting, pamene inu kuphunzitsa kwa ndewu, ziribe kanthu momwe inu muyesera kuganizira Nick Shea kapena Nick Gully kapena Hannah Sparrell kapena Rafael kapena wathu omenyana, simungakwanitse kuika 100% effort into a fighter when you really focus on your own fight. It’s about the students. They’re not about themselves. They’re more about trying to help people get better. Whether they’re a fighter or a teacher, we have a few teachers who go there and we have several women students and several children and adults. It’s a real good mix and very much a family atmosphere. We rarely lose a student.

The “Choyamba Maphunziro” moniker is not merely a nickname given to Raio because of his past job with the postal service. Early on in his MMA career, Raio zinatsala mbiri ya waulemu, apamwamba, akatswiri, likeable munthu, hence the pun in his nickname. Those same qualities have carried over to the students of First Class MMA.

“Ndimayesetsa kumathandizira aliyense mofanana,” Anati Ray. “I try to treat everyone respectfully. I think a lot of those guys (pa masewero olimbitsa), panthawi yake, treat each other respectfully. If I ever have an issue with a student, ngati iwo akuchita aulemu kwa aphunzitsi kapena ophunzira ena, I’ll pull them aside and if they have to leave then they have to leave. That’s part of life… Yathu masewero olimbitsa amakopa, zifukwa zina, anthu basi anthu abwino.”

Ndi zambiri latsopano ophunzira kubwera kudzera masewero olimbitsa pakhomo, Raio has definitely kept busy since his retirement from active competition. Like a proud father, Raio has a real passion for the success of his students. The ultimate reward for him is seeing his protégées do well in the cage.

“Pambuyo otsiriza amasonyeza (NEF XVIII), nditaona Nick (Gulliver, 1-0) kuti dzanja lake anamuukitsa ndi Rob (Robinson, 1-0), Ndinasangalala kwambiri anthu anyamata,” recalled Raio. “I’m so happy to see these two guys win. As much as I didn’t come away with a win against Bruce (Boyington, 10-8), Ine ndinati 'tikapita 2-1, I’d rather be the one that didn’t pull off the victory.I’ve never been as happy for my own win than I was for Nick and Rob that night.

I feel like he realizes that… Ine ndikuwona zochuluka zosiyanasiyana zimene John wanena Intaneti, ndi zinthu zambiri anthu ena mwanena, and that’s when I really started to get bothered by what had happened. I felt like he could’ve handled it better.

Isanafike Boyington kupereka wake mmbuyo, many felt he had been winning that first round. Poyeneradi, Boyington’s striking seemed to be on point that evening. Peterson asked both competitors to speculate on what would have happened had the referee not stopped the bout at that point.

“Amatipeza, Ine ndikuganiza Yohane akanakhala kugonja,” stated Boyington emphatically. “Ine sindikuganiza ine ndiri adza kugonjera iye, because that would be his best chance with me. He’s strong enough to defend a submission.

“Ine ndikuganiza ngati ref sanaime pa nthawi, pamene ndinali pa masaya anga mkono ndipo ine ndinali kufika kumbuyo khosi lake,” Ray ankati, “I believe my arm would’ve slid under his throat and it would’ve ended sometime soon before the round. Choncho, Ine sindikuganiza kuti akanati atapita ku kubwera kwachiwiri.”

M'masiku, masabata ndi miyezi kutsatira nkhondo, both Boyington’s and Raio’s massive fan-followings have been very vocal on social media regarding the outcome of the bout. The heated debate has raged between both sides for well over a year now. With so much at stake for each side at “NEF XVIII,” onse othamanga anakhudza zimene rematch zikutanthauza kuti iwo, ndi chimene iwo ayenera kutsimikizira izi sabata ikubwera.

“Ine sindingakhoze basi kupita mmenemo nampanda John,” Anati Boyington. “Ngakhale wake mafani akuyembekezera kuti… Ine sindingakhoze basi kupita mmenemo pa June 13and beat John Raio. I gotta go in there and destroy him. Or I still lose out on this fight. Ndikudziwa zimenezo, and I’m gonna go in there and make that statement. And I’m gonna do it with one arm, thangwi mkono si ngakhale ntchito pakali pano… I haven’t worried about this date from day one. It’s nothing to do with John Raio. I don’t disrespect the guy. I don’t not like the guy. He’s a good man. I’m just at another level. I need to show up and prove that. That’s what it is to me. It’s not about me beating John. It’s about me showing everybody where I belong.

“Pa nkhani Bruce kumaliza ine msanga, ndi kupanga mosavuta, ndipo si kudandaula za kulimbana kwambiri, Ine kupeza izo ulemu ngati zinthu zambiri iye anandiuza, banja langa ndi anzanga,” replied Raio. “Nthawi zina pambuyo otsiriza nkhondo pamene anthu achilimbikitso ine (pa Facebook) and he’d go on like a one or two paragraph rant on every single comment everyone had put on my page for like three days straight. Choncho, pambuyo Ine ndinati 'Bruce ndi ine si mabwenzi panonso,’ so I deleted him. I liked him before that fight… koma pamene anthu amanyoza ine ngati ali zimakhala zovuta ngati munthuyo.”

UNFINISHED BUSINESS LEADS TO LONG-AWAITED REMATCH

Bruce Boyington protests to referee Jimmy Bickford after his first fight with John Raio is stopped

Lewiston, Maine (April 21, 2015) - New England Kumenyana (NEF), America wa nambala wani dera nkhondo Kukwezeleza, adzakangamira ake chakhumi ndi chisanu ndi chitatu losakanizika karate-zaluso (MMA) chochitika, “NEF XVIII: Anapanga America,” pa Loweruka, June 13, 2015 pa Androscoggin Bank Colisee mu Lewiston, Maine. Poyambirira lero, the promotion announced that NEF MMA Professional Lightweight Champion Bruce “Wokongola Boy” Boyington (10-8) adzakumana John “Choyamba Maphunziro” Ray (2-7) on the card in a non-title bout at a weight of 150-pounds.

Boyington and Raio first met in February 2014 pa “NEF XII” mu Lewiston. Boyington dominated the early moments with his striking. Coming towards the end of the first round, Raio would take Boyington’s back and apply a rear-naked choke on the mat. The future lightweight champion waved his hand in the air, a signal which referee Jimmy Bickford took to indicate Boyington’s submission. Bickford stopped the bout and awarded the fight to Raio, drawing an immediate protest from Boyington who stated he was waving to his fans in the crowd as a sign that he was not in danger.

In the days that followed, a heated debate would rage on social media over the controversial finish to the fight. Both fighters, boasting arguably the two largest fan bases in all of New England, were at the center of an epic war of words between their respective supporters. It seemed as though everyone had an opinion, and the entire state of Maine was split.

Things were crazy that week after the bout,” anakumbukira NEF co-mwini ndi kulimbikitsa Nick DiSalvo. “Our Facebook page was flooded with comments and private messages. Everybody and their mother was weighing in. It’s probably the most controversial moment in NEF history. Fans have been asking us for over a year when the rematch would happen. The time has finally come, June 13 mu Lewiston!”

Boyington would go on to have a highly successful finish to 2014, winning not one but two regional MMA titles, including the NEF MMA Professional Lightweight Championship. He would also win his professional boxing debut at NEF’s inaugural boxing event in October 2014. Boyington has, pamenepo, won four of his last five since the Raio loss.

“This fight is solely about redemption and giving the fans what they have been wanting to see,” stated Boyington when reached for comment. “Sometimes you have to step outside of what is best for you in this sport and entertain and that’s what I’m doing. I like a challenge—the biggest challenge—and that time will come, but for now, its about showing people what was about to happen last time and I can still show I’m three-levels above him by making the statement I’m about to embark on. I’m done with mishaps in that cage. I’m seizing every opportunity and will not let something slip again. Mark my words, its about to get kwenikweni in my fight.”

Raio is coming off two losses in a row to his archrival, Derek Shorey (2-1), including one defeat earlier this month at “NEF XVII.” In need of a win, the founder of First Class MMA may now be more determined than ever to return to the NEF cage.

“I know this is a fight that I want, Bruce wants, and a lot of MMA fans have asked for,” stated Raio when reached for comment. “I look forward to fighting Bruce. Hopefully when the fight is over, there will be no controversy.”
