GLOVER VACATES; A NEW LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION TO BE CROWNED AT NEF 25

It was a bitterly cold night in Lewiston last February when Ryan Glover (3-1) won the New England Fights (Nef) melanje-masyal arts- (Mma) amateur light-heavyweight title. The months to come would see Glover accept a new job that would take him up and down the East Coast. With little time to train to defend the title, and in the interest of doing right by the division, Glover recently made the difficult decision to relinquish the championship.

NEF executives were quick to act. Earlier today, the fight promotion announced that Victor Irwin (2-0) would meet Nick Shea (2-0) to fill the vacancy. The two undefeated athletes are scheduled to face-off to determine a new light-heavyweight champion at “Nef 25: HEROES & VILLAINS” souSeptanm 10, 2016 nan Lewiston.

Irwin was a standout wrestler at Brewer High School in Brewer, Maine at 195-pounds where he was a Class-A state champion. His love for the sport is so strong that when Irwin attended Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) and learned the school did not have a wrestling program, he created one himself. As a college freshman in 2014 Irwin went to Nationals and achieved All-American status. He currently trains out of Young’s MMA in Bangor, Maine.

I’ve thought a lot about this fight and I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter what I say,” said Irwin, “it matters what I do, and come September 10thyou’re gonna see some serious doing.

2015 was a great start to the MMA career of Nick Shea. In February of that year, he won his debut fight over the much more experienced Jacob Cameron (1-5) via premye-wonn pentch teknik. Later in the year, Shea would go on to defeat Ruben Redman (0-1) by decision in a hard-fought contest. It would earn Shea a nomination for the “Rookie pou Ane a” nan la 2015 NEF Year-End Awards. Sou Septanm 10 nan Lewiston, Shea will attempt to become the first member of the First Class MMA fight team to capture gold in the NEF cage.

It’s an honor to fight someone from Young’s MMA,” said Shea. “I believe this will be my biggest test in the cage to date. I’m grateful and excited to compete for the amateur light heavyweight title. Victor and I will put on an exciting fight on Samdi, September 10th!”

JOHN RAIO pwospere nan pou pran retrèt ak yon ekip premye klas

Lewiston, Maine (Septanm 3, 2015) - New England Goumen (Nef), Nimewo-yon sèl batay pwomosyon rejyonal Amerik la, pral kenbe diznevyèm melanje-masyal-boza li yo (Mma) evènman, “Nef XIX,” nan Samdi, Septanm 12, 2015 nan Androscoggin Bank Colisée nan nan Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature three members of First Class MMA in action that night. Hannah Sparrell (0-0), Rafael Velado (0-0) ak Nick Shea (1-0) soti nan Brunswick nan, Maine-based gym. Dènyèman, Premye klas mma fondatè ak tèt antrenè Jan “Premye Gwoup” Ray Joined nef ko-pwopriyetè ak promoteur Matt Peterson kòm envite nan sou nef Podcast a.

Sa a jen sot pase, 38-year-old Raio retired after competing in the NEF cage for some three-and-a-half years. Raio now concentrates on training the members of his First Class MMA gym, ki gen ladan prepare Sparrell, Velado ak Shea pou epizod kap vini yo.

“Definitivman mwen kapab mete yon anpil plis tan nan avyon de gè mwen kòm byen ke fanmi mwen,” Di Ray. “Konbatan yo ki, I can put a lot more time into them because it’s not all about me. When you’re fighting, lè w ap fòmasyon pou yon batay, pa gen pwoblèm konbyen lajan ou eseye yo konsantre sou Nick Shea oswa Nick ravin oswa Hannah Sparrell oswa Rafael oswa nenpòt nan konbatan nou an, ou pa ka vrèman mete 100% effort into a fighter when you really focus on your own fight. It’s tough splitting between their fight and your fight and your job, fanmi ou ak timoun ou yo.”

Depi nesans la nan nef byen bonè nan mwa 2012, ak eksplozyon an ki vin apre nan popilarite espò a nan nan eta a, anpil nouvo jimnaz te grenn yo leve nan dènye ane yo, including First Class MMA. Raio enjoys, plis pase nenpòt lòt bagay, sere-brode a, atmosfè fanmi-tankou sa te devlope nan etablisman an depi li louvri jimnastik la.

“Bagay la pi gwo mwen renmen sou jimnastik nou an, Mwen renmen ale epi yo te yon pati nan, ki gen la nan yon gwoup trè enb elèv yo ak pwofesè,” noted Raio. “Everyone who teaches in there is about the fighters. It’s about the students. They’re not about themselves. They’re more about trying to help people get better. Whether they’re a fighter or a teacher, we have a few teachers who go there and we have several women students and several children and adults. It’s a real good mix and very much a family atmosphere. We rarely lose a student.

Nan “Premye Gwoup” moniker is not merely a nickname given to Raio because of his past job with the postal service. Early on in his MMA career, Raio repitasyon a nan yon respè, élégance, pwofesyonèl, endividyèl desirable, hence the pun in his nickname. Those same qualities have carried over to the students of First Class MMA.

“Mwen eseye trete tout moun egal-ego,” Di Ray. “I try to treat everyone respectfully. I think a lot of those guys (nan gym la), nan vire, treat each other respectfully. If I ever have an issue with a student, si yo pa ap aji respekte pwofesè yo oswa lòt elèv yo, I’ll pull them aside and if they have to leave then they have to leave. That’s part of life… Jimnastik nou atire, pou kèk rezon, moun ki yo se jis bèl moun.”

Avèk pi plis ak plis nouvo elèv ap vini nan pòt jimnastik l ', Raio has definitely kept busy since his retirement from active competition. Like a proud father, Raio has a real passion for the success of his students. The ultimate reward for him is seeing his protégées do well in the cage.

“Apre montre nan dènye (Nef XVIII Atik), lè mwen te wè Nick (Gulliver, 1-0) te bra l 'leve soti vivan ak Rob (Robinson, 1-0), Mwen te tèlman kontan pou neg sa yo,” recalled Raio. “I’m so happy to see these two guys win. As much as I didn’t come away with a win against Bruce (Boyington, 10-8), M 'te di' si nou ale 2-1, I’d rather be the one that didn’t pull off the victory.I’ve never been as happy for my own win than I was for Nick and Rob that night.
