He won a Maine state championship wrestling for Gardiner Area High School in 1995, and he went on to wrestle for Plymouth State University and the University of Southern Maine. While working for the United States Postal Service, Raio began competing in MMA in 2012. Since his retirement, Raio has concentrated on training fighters at his gym First Class MMA in Brunswick, Maine. He has led several to championship gold in the NEF cage while working full-time at his current position with Bath Iron Works (BIW).

I’m excited to get back into the cage,” Di Ray. “Two years is a long time after fighting 14 fwa nan twa ane. I’ve learned a lot about the sport in that time. Our team’s success has motivated me a lot. We have amazing fighters and instructors at our gym. The opportunity to fight in Portland, where I delivered mail for eight years, was too hard to pass up.

HEAVYWEIGHT CLASH ADDED TO NEF 22 KAT BATAY

Lewiston, Maine (Mas 10, 2016) - New England Goumen (Nef), Nimewo-yon sèl batay pwomosyon rejyonal Amerik la, pral kenbe evènman pwochen li yo, “Nef 22: Tout wout mennen isit la” sou Samdi, Avril 23, 2016 nan Androscoggin Bank Colisée nan nan Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature a mix of mixed-martial-arts (Mma) and professional boxing bouts. Earlier today, NEF announced the addition of an amateur heavyweight bout to the MMA portion of the “nef 22” kat batay. Nick Gulliver (2-0) ap rankontre Dave Smith (2-1) at a fight weight of 265-pounds.

Nick Gulliver is a product of John Raio’s First Class MMA gym of Brunswick, Maine, as well as the Foundry – yon brezilyen jyu-jitsu (BJJ) academy located in Farmington, Maine. He made his amateur debut last June at “Nef XVIII Atik,” submitting Sonny Spratt (0-2) nan premye tou an. Gulliver followed up that victory with a technical knockout (KI MOUN KI) win over Jason Field (0-2) this past November a mere 12-seconds into the first round. He hopes another win on April 23rd will put him in line for a shot at the NEF MMA Amateur Heavyweight Title currently held by Billy Leahy (3-1).

I’m looking forward to fighting again for NEF on April 23rd, and I’m thankful for the opportunity that Matt Peterson and Nick Disalvo give me to fight for their amazing organization,” said Gulliver. “I’ll be fighting who I think is now the number one heavyweight fighter fighting for NEF, Dave Smith. This kid is a great fighter and good athlete. I’m looking forward to a great fight. I fight for two amazing schools and organizations, the Foundry and First Class MMA. This fight will be the first time I won’t be fighting in front of my father who is sick. It’s a lot for him to go to these events being so sick and on oxygen all the time. But my father stated he would make it to one last fight if I get a title shot. I think fighting Dave Smith and winning would put me in a good spot to fight for a title. I’m looking to get that fight in front of my father who pushes me to be the man I am today. Se konsa,, for three rounds on April 23rd, I’ll be pushing harder than I have in the past to get that opportunity. I’m always looking to impress the crowd. I think fighting someone like Smith will keep the crowd on their feet.

Dave Smith is a member of Berserkers MMA based out of Rumford, Maine. Smith has an extensive wrestling background, having gone 147-17 while competing for Mountain Valley High School (MVHS) and winning two state titles in the process. He also wrestled for Plymouth State University (PSU) in New Hampshire. Like Gulliver, Smith finished his first two opponents in the opening round. He is looking to bounce back from a loss to Brendan Battles (2-0) nan “Nef 21” mwa pase a.

I’m glad to be on another NEF card,” exclaimed Smith. “I am also very excited to be fighting Nick Gully. Nick has had a couple impressive wins and I think this will be a good fight! So get ready because it’s going to be a hell of a show.

JOHN RAIO pwospere nan pou pran retrèt ak yon ekip premye klas

Lewiston, Maine (Septanm 3, 2015) - New England Goumen (Nef), Nimewo-yon sèl batay pwomosyon rejyonal Amerik la, pral kenbe diznevyèm melanje-masyal-boza li yo (Mma) evènman, “Nef XIX,” nan Samdi, Septanm 12, 2015 nan Androscoggin Bank Colisée nan nan Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature three members of First Class MMA in action that night. Hannah Sparrell (0-0), Rafael Velado (0-0) ak Nick Shea (1-0) soti nan Brunswick nan, Maine-based gym. Dènyèman, Premye klas mma fondatè ak tèt antrenè Jan “Premye Gwoup” Ray Joined nef ko-pwopriyetè ak promoteur Matt Peterson kòm envite nan sou nef Podcast a.

Sa a jen sot pase, 38-year-old Raio retired after competing in the NEF cage for some three-and-a-half years. Raio now concentrates on training the members of his First Class MMA gym, ki gen ladan prepare Sparrell, Velado ak Shea pou epizod kap vini yo.

“Definitivman mwen kapab mete yon anpil plis tan nan avyon de gè mwen kòm byen ke fanmi mwen,” Di Ray. “Konbatan yo ki, I can put a lot more time into them because it’s not all about me. When you’re fighting, lè w ap fòmasyon pou yon batay, pa gen pwoblèm konbyen lajan ou eseye yo konsantre sou Nick Shea oswa Nick ravin oswa Hannah Sparrell oswa Rafael oswa nenpòt nan konbatan nou an, ou pa ka vrèman mete 100% effort into a fighter when you really focus on your own fight. It’s tough splitting between their fight and your fight and your job, fanmi ou ak timoun ou yo.”

Depi nesans la nan nef byen bonè nan mwa 2012, ak eksplozyon an ki vin apre nan popilarite espò a nan nan eta a, anpil nouvo jimnaz te grenn yo leve nan dènye ane yo, including First Class MMA. Raio enjoys, plis pase nenpòt lòt bagay, sere-brode a, atmosfè fanmi-tankou sa te devlope nan etablisman an depi li louvri jimnastik la.

“Bagay la pi gwo mwen renmen sou jimnastik nou an, Mwen renmen ale epi yo te yon pati nan, ki gen la nan yon gwoup trè enb elèv yo ak pwofesè,” noted Raio. “Everyone who teaches in there is about the fighters. It’s about the students. They’re not about themselves. They’re more about trying to help people get better. Whether they’re a fighter or a teacher, we have a few teachers who go there and we have several women students and several children and adults. It’s a real good mix and very much a family atmosphere. We rarely lose a student.

Nan “Premye Gwoup” moniker is not merely a nickname given to Raio because of his past job with the postal service. Early on in his MMA career, Raio repitasyon a nan yon respè, élégance, pwofesyonèl, endividyèl desirable, hence the pun in his nickname. Those same qualities have carried over to the students of First Class MMA.

“Mwen eseye trete tout moun egal-ego,” Di Ray. “I try to treat everyone respectfully. I think a lot of those guys (nan gym la), nan vire, treat each other respectfully. If I ever have an issue with a student, si yo pa ap aji respekte pwofesè yo oswa lòt elèv yo, I’ll pull them aside and if they have to leave then they have to leave. That’s part of life… Jimnastik nou atire, pou kèk rezon, moun ki yo se jis bèl moun.”

Avèk pi plis ak plis nouvo elèv ap vini nan pòt jimnastik l ', Raio has definitely kept busy since his retirement from active competition. Like a proud father, Raio has a real passion for the success of his students. The ultimate reward for him is seeing his protégées do well in the cage.

“Apre montre nan dènye (Nef XVIII Atik), lè mwen te wè Nick (Gulliver, 1-0) te bra l 'leve soti vivan ak Rob (Robinson, 1-0), Mwen te tèlman kontan pou neg sa yo,” recalled Raio. “I’m so happy to see these two guys win. As much as I didn’t come away with a win against Bruce (Boyington, 10-8), M 'te di' si nou ale 2-1, I’d rather be the one that didn’t pull off the victory.I’ve never been as happy for my own win than I was for Nick and Rob that night.

BOYINGTON PASE tèt-a-tèt ak RAIO JOU anvan batay: “Mwen pral antre nan peyi a ak detwi l '”

NEF_FNVXIII_madeinUSA_FB_final+(1)

Lewiston, Maine (Jen 10, 2015) - New England Goumen (Nef), Nimewo-yon sèl batay pwomosyon rejyonal Amerik la, pral kenbe dizwityèm melanje-masyal-boza li yo (Mma) evènman, “Nef XVIII Atik: Made In America,” sa a Samdi lannwit, Jen 13, 2015 nan Androscoggin Bank Colisee la nan Lewiston, Maine. Dènyèman, headliners Bruce “Joli ti gason” Boyington (10-8), nef mma Pwofesyonèl lejè chanpyon an, ak Jan “Premye Gwoup” Ray(2-7) Joined nef ko-pwopriyetè ak promoteur Matt Peterson sou yon espesyal “Tèt-a-tèt” edition of the NEF Podcast. Boyington and Raio discussed the upcoming rematch and the controversy surrounding their first meeting in February 2014, nan mitan lòt sijè.

The interview quickly turned to the top of the first fight. Raio appeared to apply a rear-naked choke to Boyington on the mat late in the first round. Boyington began waving his hand in the air and referee Jimmy Bickford quickly stepped in to stop the fight. Much has been made of the infamous “men onn.” While Bickford saw it as a sign of Boyington’s submission, Boyington te rale ke li te senpleman siyal fanatik li nan mitan foul moun la ki kenbe la pa te ap fè nenpòt domaj.

“Mwen ka di ou ki jan, jou swa sa te fini,” recalled Raio of the first bout. “Fondamantalman, Bruce had given me his back. When I took his back, I had the hooks in and I had the rear-naked choke across his jaw line. I was trying to pressure it under his throat, ak jan mwen te pwan biceps gòch mwen ak men gòch mwen te ale dèyè tèt li, ref la sispann batay la… Mwen te sezi ke li te eksplwatè paske, onètman, Mwen te konnen ke mwen te gen yon anpil nan presyon sou machwè l '… Si an reyalite li te leve, ki absorb pou l '.”

“Nan ki sitiyasyon, Mwen espesifikman sonje Bickford gade nan m ', Mwen se fè fas a moute, li te ale pou kou m epi mwen leve,” Di Boyington. “Tout moun kòmanse Roaring reyèl byen fò ak mwen sonje Bickford di, 'Pa gen Bruce, ou pa ka di ke '… Si ou panse ke mwen soumèt oswa mwen se nan pwoblèm oswa ou pa ka respire, you don’t tell the fighter, “Ou pa ka di ke,” you just jump in and you stop the fight. I feel like he made a mistake. I feel like he realizes that… Mwen wè yon bann bagay sa yo diferan ki Jan te di sou entènèt, ak yon anpil nan bagay sa yo lòt moun yo te di, and that’s when I really started to get bothered by what had happened. I felt like he could’ve handled it better.

Anvan yo fè Boyington bay moute do l ', many felt he had been winning that first round. Vreman vre, Boyington’s striking seemed to be on point that evening. Peterson asked both competitors to speculate on what would have happened had the referee not stopped the bout at that point.

“Fatalman, Mwen panse ke Jan ta ve yo te frape soti,” stated Boyington emphatically. “Mwen pa panse mwen pral soumèt l ', because that would be his best chance with me. He’s strong enough to defend a submission.

“Mwen panse ke si ref la pa t 'sispann nan moman an, lè m 'te sou machwè l' ak avanbra mwen epi mwen te rive dèyè kou l ',” Ray espekile, “I believe my arm would’ve slid under his throat and it would’ve ended sometime soon before the round. Se konsa,, Mwen pa panse ke li ta te ale nan yon dezyèm tou.”

Nan jou sa yo, semèn ak mwa ki vini apre batay la, both Boyington’s and Raio’s massive fan-followings have been very vocal on social media regarding the outcome of the bout. The heated debate has raged between both sides for well over a year now. With so much at stake for each side at “Nef XVIII Atik,” tou de atlèt manyen sou sa rematch a vle di yo, ak sa yo bezwen pwouve nan fen semèn sa a ap vini.

“Mwen jis pa ka antre nan peyi a ak bat Jan,” Di Boyington. “Menm fanatik pwòp tèt li ap tann ki… Mwen pa ka jis ale nan gen sou June 13thand beat John Raio. I gotta go in there and destroy him. Or I still lose out on this fight. Mwen konnen ke, and I’m gonna go in there and make that statement. And I’m gonna do it with one arm, paske lòt bra a se pa menm k ap travay kounye a… I haven’t worried about this date from day one. It’s nothing to do with John Raio. I don’t disrespect the guy. I don’t not like the guy. He’s a good man. I’m just at another level. I need to show up and prove that. That’s what it is to me. It’s not about me beating John. It’s about me showing everybody where I belong.

“Nan sans Bruce fini m 'byen vit, ak fè li fasil, epi yo pa vrèman mangonmen sou batay la twòp, Mwen jis jwenn li derespektan tankou yon bann bagay sa yo li te di m ', fanmi m ak zanmi m ',” replied Raio. “Te gen fwa apre batay ki sot pase a lè moun yo te remersye m ' (sou Facebook) and he’d go on like a one or two paragraph rant on every single comment everyone had put on my page for like three days straight. Se konsa,, apre ke mwen te di 'Bruce ak mwen yo se pa reyèlman zanmi ankò,’ so I deleted him. I liked him before that fight… men lè moun ki mank respè m 'tankou li te gen li difisil renmen nèg la.”

UNFINISHED BUSINESS LEADS TO LONG-AWAITED REMATCH

Bruce Boyington protests to referee Jimmy Bickford after his first fight with John Raio is stopped

Lewiston, Maine (Avril 21, 2015) - New England Goumen (Nef), Nimewo-yon sèl batay pwomosyon rejyonal Amerik la, pral kenbe dizwityèm melanje-masyal-boza li yo (Mma) evènman, “Nef XVIII Atik: Made in America,” sou Samdi, Jen 13, 2015 nan Androscoggin Bank Colisee la nan Lewiston, Maine. Earlier today, the promotion announced that NEF MMA Professional Lightweight Champion Bruce “Joli ti gason” Boyington (10-8) ap rankontre Jan “Premye Gwoup” Ray (2-7) on the card in a non-title bout at a weight of 150-pounds.

Boyington and Raio first met in February 2014 nan “Nef XII” nan Lewiston. Boyington dominated the early moments with his striking. Coming towards the end of the first round, Raio would take Boyington’s back and apply a rear-naked choke on the mat. The future lightweight champion waved his hand in the air, a signal which referee Jimmy Bickford took to indicate Boyington’s submission. Bickford stopped the bout and awarded the fight to Raio, drawing an immediate protest from Boyington who stated he was waving to his fans in the crowd as a sign that he was not in danger.

In the days that followed, a heated debate would rage on social media over the controversial finish to the fight. Both fighters, boasting arguably the two largest fan bases in all of New England, were at the center of an epic war of words between their respective supporters. It seemed as though everyone had an opinion, and the entire state of Maine was split.

Things were crazy that week after the bout,” recalled NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “Our Facebook page was flooded with comments and private messages. Everybody and their mother was weighing in. It’s probably the most controversial moment in NEF history. Fans have been asking us for over a year when the rematch would happen. The time has finally come, Jen 13 nan Lewiston!”

Boyington would go on to have a highly successful finish to 2014, winning not one but two regional MMA titles, including the NEF MMA Professional Lightweight Championship. He would also win his professional boxing debut at NEF’s inaugural boxing event in October 2014. Boyington has, an reyalite, won four of his last five since the Raio loss.

“This fight is solely about redemption and giving the fans what they have been wanting to see,” stated Boyington when reached for comment. “Sometimes you have to step outside of what is best for you in this sport and entertain and that’s what I’m doing. I like a challenge—the biggest challenge—and that time will come, but for now, its about showing people what was about to happen last time and I can still show I’m three-levels above him by making the statement I’m about to embark on. I’m done with mishaps in that cage. I’m seizing every opportunity and will not let something slip again. Mark my words, its about to get reyèl in my fight.”

Raio is coming off two losses in a row to his archrival, Derek Shorey (2-1), including one defeat earlier this month at “Nef ksvii.” In need of a win, the founder of First Class MMA may now be more determined than ever to return to the NEF cage.

“I know this is a fight that I want, Bruce wants, and a lot of MMA fans have asked for,” stated Raio when reached for comment. “I look forward to fighting Bruce. Hopefully when the fight is over, there will be no controversy.”
