Tommy Rainone takes on Maurice Chalmers; Former world champion Imamu Mayfield returns to fight Dan Pasciolla

ЛОВЕЛЛ, Маса. (Фебруар 26, 2016) – Western New England dominated the open class finals of the New England Tournament of Champions, part of the 70^тх annual Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves Championship, winning seven of 10 matches last night at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

The eight men’s individual open class winners earned spots on Team New England for the 2016 National Golden Gloves Championships, Мај 16-21, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Team New England includes two of the top ranked boxers in the country, Лигхт Хеавивеигхт елвис Фигуероа, and light welterweight Jaime Ortiz Rodriguez (repeat NE champion), both members of N.E. open class team champion from Western NE. “In the last 10 године,” explained New England Golden Gloves Executive Director Bobby Russo, “we hadn’t been on a good run. Attendance dropped off a little each year. Team champions were Western N.E. in the open class, Central N.E. in the novice class.

Boxing has been practiced at the nation’s second oldest military institution for 150 године, and midshipmen have vied for the Brigade Boxing Championship since 1941. Along the way to this year’s 75^тхanniversary, the academy has made learning to box a requirement of graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy.

The man who teaches the “sweet science” to midshipmen – male and female – is Head Boxing Coach Jim McNally. It’s about future leaders facing fear. “We use boxing…as a laboratory…an environment of controlled stress, physical fear,” says McNally. “We want them to learn a lot about themselves and how they’re going to react to those situations,” he tells Ford.

60 MINUTES SPORTS shot the story in Annapolis in the fall and last January to show the process and tell the stories of three midshipmen who will be in the ring ово петак fighting for a championship.
