Undefeated local prospects are in action as Daniel Baiz competes in a four-round super welterweight contest against Rick Graham while unbeaten Enrique Neira Jr. faces Adam Castillo in a four-round middleweight bout.
Rounding out the night of fights is undefeated Mexican Rolando Garza in a super welterweight contest and San Antonio’s Armando Cardenas taking on Fort Worth’s Adam Ealons in four-rounds of welterweight action.
The brother of former world champion Omar, the 19-year-old Figueroa turned pro in May of last year by defeating Hector Gutierrez and followed that up by stopping Ricardo Mena, Ramiro Ruiz and Francisco Muro to close out the year. The Weslaco-native has stayed busy in 2016 picking up four more victories via stoppage over Oldier Landin, Harold Reyes, Jahaziel Vazquez and Jonell Nieves. He now takes on the 24-year-old Zorilla out of Puerto Rico. Zorilla has fought in the U.S. once before and most recently stopped Juan Valdez in the third round in June.

SAN ANTONIO (June 26, 2016) – Fast rising super welterweight prospect Justin DeLoach (15-1, 8 KOs) dominated Junior Castillo rolling to an eight round decision by scores of 79-71, 78-72 and 78-72 in the main event of Premier Boxing Championson NBCSN.
Drilling Castillo to the canvas in the third and sixth DeLoach put the junior middleweight division on notice that he is looking to become a world champion in the not-to-distant future.
“I’m very happy with my performance, did exactly what I wanted to. I’m ready for any of the big names in the junior middleweight division. Even my friend Erickson Lubin, I’d love to fight him,”
said DeLoach.
“I’m going to stay humble, stay focused, and keep working towards a world championship.”
Unbeaten super lightweight Ryan “Cowboy” Karl (12-0, 8KOs) continued to impress with a one-sided eight round decision over Luis Solis (14-7-4, 12 KOs).
Dropping Solid in round, Karl went past the fifth stanza for the first time in his career enroute to victory by scores of 80-71, 79-72 and 78-73.
In the televised opener, Darwin Price (12-0, 11 Kos) stayed undefeated with a spirited eight round decision against the also previously undefeated Semajay Thomas, (8-1, 4 KOs) in a super lightweight scrap by scores of 80-71 (twice) and 79-72.
Dropping Thomas in the first round, Price set the tone, playing matador to Thomas’ bull. Following the advice of his renowned trainer Ronnie Shields Price stayed on the outside, racking up points throughout the fight with a piston like jab setting up his combinations towards the wide points decision.

In his last bout, the 22-year-old DeLoach delivered a sensational knockout over previously unbeaten Dillon Cook in his first bout with new trainer and former world champion Paul Williams. The fighter from Augusta, Georgia turned pro in 2013 and won his first 10 fights before suffering a defeat in early 2015. DeLoach has rebounded masterfully with four wins in a row including victories over veterans Santos Benavides and Todd Manuel.
A 2012 Olympian for his native Dominican Republic, Castillo recorded a significant victory in his last bout when he defeated previously unbeaten and highly regarded Kyrone Davis over eight rounds in April. Castillo turned pro in 2013 and made his U.S. debut in December 2015 with victories over Eduardo Flores and Roland Nagy before his triumph in April.
An undefeated prospect representing Houston, Karl had an excellent amateur career that ended with him ranked third in the nation in the 141-pound division. The 24-year-old won six times in 2015 including an October domination of Alfonso Olvera at the Dancehall in San Antonio. Now he is primed to reach contender status as his competition improves beginning with the 24-year-old Solis of Mexico who comes in off of a fifth round knockout of Isidro Toala earlier this month.
Originally from St. Louis, Price’s road has led him to Houston where he now trains with Ronnie Shields. An exceptional athlete who was highly regarded in track and field as a teenager, the 26-year-old turned pro in 2013. His activity ramped up in 2015 as he took home four victories including a win in his first eight-round bout against Alvaro Ortiz in November.
A National Silver Gloves champion as an amateur, Thomas made it out of the roughest neighborhoods of Chicago and made his professional boxing debut in 2013. After winning his first six pro bouts, all in Chicago, the 23-year-old defeated Farkhad Sharipov in San Antonio in December 2015.

In the co-main event, the long-standing and well-documented sibling rivalry between costumed crusader Phoenix Jones (6-1-1) aka Ben Fodor, and Caros “The Future” Fodor (10-5) will come to a head when the adopted brothers from Seattle face off against each other at a catchweight of 162 pounds.

“We are excited to make our debut in the great state of Washington with such a spectacular affair that will feature one of the most anticipated and well-deserved rematches of the year, as well as a something that you rarely see in combat sports – a matchup between family members whose competitive rivalry is so intense that, after so many years, it has resulted in the two agreeing to settle their differences in the cage,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo.

Alexandre Almeida vs. Lance Palmer

On December 18, the 5-foot-11, 27-year-old Almeida of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil notched his fifth consecutive win, seizing the World Series of Fighting featherweight title from Palmer of Sacramento, Calif. via a controversial, unanimous decision after Almeida used his significant height and reach advantage to continuously frustrate the 5-foot-6, 28-year-old Palmer for the duration of their five-round matchup.

The loss snapped a three-fight win streak for Palmer, who captured the featherweight strap when he submitted Rick Glenn with a rear-naked choke in the third round (3:09) of their matchup on December 13, 2014.

Phoenix Jones vs. Caros Fodor

Over the course of the last five years, Jones and Fodor of Seattle have each, on several occasions, gone on the record expressing their desires to fight one another, despite the fact that they grew up under the same roof and train in the same camp owned by head coach Matt Hume.

The 6-foot, 27-year-old Jones, whose local crime fighting escapades have made national headlines, will make his first start in the decagon cage since September 18 when he submitted Roberto Yong with a rarely seen, highlight reel scissor choke in the first round (3:09) of their meeting at WSOF23.

Fodor, a 5-foot-9, 32-year-old veteran of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Strikeforce, made his debut under the World Series of Fighting banner, after a five-fight stint with ONE in Asia, on January 23, losing a unanimous decision to Luiz Firmino in the main event of WSOF27.

During his seven-year professional career, Fodor, a former U.S. Marine who did battle in the Iraq War, has notched impressive wins over the likes of Team AKA member Justin Wilcox and Cung Le-trained James Terry.

LAS VEGAS (February 3, 2016) –World Series of Fighting (WSOF.com) announced today the addition of three main card matchups, including a heavyweight co-main event contest between Josh “Cuddly Bear” Copeland(11-3) and Mike “300” Hayes (19-10-2), to its highly anticipated WSOF29: Gaethje vs. Foster world lightweight (155 pounds) championship event at the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colo. on Saturday, March 12, live on NBCSN at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

In other action on the four-bout live telecast that will be headlined by the lightweight championship showdown between reigning, undefeated kingpin Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje (15-0) and number one contender Brian Foster (25-9), middleweight (185 pounds) standouts Cory “The One” Devela (15-6) and Louis “Handgunz” Taylor (11-3) will collide in their respective World Series of Fighting debuts.

Josh Copeland vs. Mike Hayes

The 6-foot-1 Copeland of Denver, Colo. is a former number one ranked heavyweight in his home state, and a four-time title holder since turning professional in 2010.

The 33-year-old, former Youth Ministry student at Dallas Baptist College, has earned 8 of his 11 career victories as a professional by way of (T)KO or submission, with 5 of those wins coming in less than 2 minutes.

A teammate of Gaethje’s at Grudge Training Center, Copeland will look to rebound from a second round (2:50) submission (kimura) defeat at the hands ofVitaly Minakov on December 11, a result that snapped a two-fight win streak for Copeland.

During his professional career spanning eight-plus years, the 6-foot-4, 35-year-old Hayes of Redmond, Wash. has faced off with elite level competition, including former world champion Andrei Arlovski and superstar Ruslan Magomedov, both of whom he fought to a decision.

On November 2, 2013, Hayes notched his most impressive victory to date, scoring a devastating, third round (3:11) KO on decorated MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling champion Jeff “The Snowman” Monson with a head kick.

In his last start on June 4, 2015, Hayes produced another impressive result, fighting former South African national wrestling champion and four-time MMA titlistTrevor Prangley, to a draw.

Cory Devela vs. Louis Taylor

The 6-foot-2, 31-year-old Devela of Bonney Lake, Wash., will enter the decagon cage in the midst of a four-fight win streak that includes a unanimous decision victory over superstar Nick “The Promise” Ring on June 26, 2015.

A longtime protégé of MMA superstar and submission expert Dennis “Superman” Hallman, Devela, who has notched 11 of his 16 career wins by way of (T)KO or submission, burst into the national spotlight at a Strikeforce promoted event in Tacoma, Wash. on February 23, 2008, scoring a first round (1:22) TKO on heralded superstar Joe “Diesel” Riggs with a thunderous slam that rendered Riggs unable to continue fighting.

Devela’s recent ascendance that has him knocking on the door of becoming a world championship contender again, comes after he took an extended, three-year hiatus from competition to care for a sick loved one between 2010 and 2013.

Also looking to earn his fifth consecutive win, the 5-foot-11, 36-year-old Taylor of Chicago, Ill. is the number one ranked middleweight in his home state, according to the latest Tapology.com ratings.

A prolific striker who has finished 10 of his 11 opponents to date by way of (T)KO or submission, Taylor’s last four victories all came inside of the first round of battle.

Prior to becoming a mixed martial artist, Taylor was a wrestling standout for the NCAA Division I program at Eastern Illinois University where he benefited from training with fellow, former team member turned assistant coach Matt Hughes, who went on to become a two-time UFC champion and Hall of Fame member.

Josh Cavan vs. Kris Hocum

Fighting out of Denver, Cavan is a 5-foot-10, 32-year-old, lifelong athlete who competed at the minor league level of professional hockey before turning his attention to MMA.  A winner of 9 of his 11 professional career fights by way of (T)KO or submission, Cavan will look to bounce back from a second round (1:28) TKO (punches) defeat at the hands of Joe Eichelberger on November 6.

The 5-foot-11, 30-year-old Hocum of Fort Collins, Colo. made his professional debut on October 27, 2012 as a participant in a one-night, eight-man tournament, defeating multiple opponents to emerge the victor of the grueling affair.   He will look to regain momentum after back-to-back losses in his last two appearances.

An alumnus of the University of Northern Colorado, Gaethje became the first competitive wrestler to earn All-American honors for the school after it became a Division I athletic program.  He placed seventh in the NCAA national wrestling tournament in his junior year.

WALTER CASTILLO & KEITA OBARA FIGHT TO MAJORITY DRAW IN
ACTION-PACKED CO-MAIN EVENT

MIAMI (November 7, 2015) – Kevin Bizier (25-2, 17 KOs) stopped Fredrick Lawson(24-1, 20 KOs) after 10-rounds of toe-to-toe action on Premier Boxing Champions(PBC) on NBCSN on Saturday night from Miccosukee Resort and Gaming in Miami.
Lawson’s corner stopped the fight after the tenth round as Lawson indicated that his jaw may have been broken. Bizier pressured Lawson throughout the fight and hurt him with powerful right hands.
In the fifth round, Bizier landed one of those powerful rights perfectly on Lawson’s head and sent the previously unbeaten fighter to the canvas. Making his U.S. debut, Bizier wore Lawson down and never allowed his opponent to get into a rhythm.
In the co-main event, Nicaragua’s Walter Castillo (26-3-1, 19 KOs) and Keita Obara(14-1-1, 13 KOs) fought to a majority draw in a back and forth battle that appeared to have been won by Japan’s Obara.
Making his U.S. debut, Obara used his length and numerous well-timed right hands to stifle the attack of the aggressive Castillo. The Nicaraguan Castillo came out of the gate with a strong second round when he hurt Obara on the ropes with multiple flurries.
Obara appeared to be the fresher fighter in the later rounds and threw sharp punches while controlling the fight with his movement. Castillo was able to send Obara into retreat mode at moments late in the fight with his all-out barrages, but still took plenty of punishment for his efforts.
Castillo was bleeding from his eye, mouth and ear at different moments throughout the 12-round affair. The final judges totals were 115-113 for Obara and 114-114 twice.

KEVIN BIZIER
“My plan was to stay close, not let him breathe and it worked. I put too much pressure on him.
“I was surprised. He’s not a puncher like his record would indicate. He hit me well, but never hurt me. I never felt tired or any pain. In the tenth round I was still very strong.
“He was starting the rounds strong but he would fade by the end of the round and that’s when I would come on”
FREDRICK LAWSON
Fredrick Lawson did not comment due to injured jaw.
WALTER CASTILLO
“The fight was a very good, strong fight. I respect the decision of the judges. I fought my best.
“The eye did affect my vision. As soon as I got hit, everything went blurry. My corner did a good job to get me through the 12 rounds. I gave it my all, but the eye did hamper the things I was trying to do.
“I would definitely fight him again. I would like to have a final decision over who the winner was. If he will fight, I would love to.”
KEITA OBARA
“It’s my fault for not knocking him out. I don’t agree with the decision, but it’s my fault in the end because he was still there at the end of 12 rounds.
“I landed good punches on him, but none were knockout punches. I knew to beat him here I would need to get the knockout and I did not get it.
“It was really fun and exciting to fight in U.S. Before the decision was read I was having the time of my life. Now I’m disappointed in the decision.
“I would fight him again if the arrangement were made.”

HOUSTON (November 1, 2015) – The Halloween night broadcast of Premier Boxing Champions on NBCSN took Houston’s NRG Arena by storm as undefeated rising starJermell “Iron Man” Charlo (27-0, 12 KOs) dominated former world champion Joachim Alcine (35-8-2, 21 KOs) in the main event by sixth round knockout.
Televised coverage kicked off with a thrilling showdown as Tony Harrison (22-1, 18 KOs) got the unanimous decision over Cecil McCalla (20-3, 7 KOs).
The final televised fight of the evening saw undefeated middleweight prospect Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant (12-0, 8 KOs) capture a unanimous decision over Tyrone Bruson (22-6-1, 21 KOs).
Here is what the televised fighters had to say about their performances tonight:
JERMELL CHARLO
“I established my jab early, and once I was comfortable with my jab the right hand started landing.
“I wanted to load up and show that I have power. I knew I was getting to him and wearing him down. It felt great to get the knockout.
“I knew after the knockdown in the sixth round it was over, but he was a strong fighter.
“Fighting in front of my hometown crowd fueled me. It gave me energy.
“I’m a completely different fighter now with my new trainer. My brother noticed it too and told me the same thing.
“I’m getting older, better, wiser and improving with every fight. Everything people saw tonight is a product of hard work in training.
“Hopefully I can fight again in December, and I want John Jackson next.”
JOACHIM ALCINE
“My right hand was working well for me, but I stopped throwing it and started focusing too much on my jab.
“I didn’t fight for a year and a half, and then I jumped right into the ring with a hungry, young lion. I wanted the fight, but sometimes pride takes its’ toll.
“Fighting on a PBC card gave me a big opportunity to show the world what I can do. But (Charlo) was stronger than I thought he’d be.
“I don’t know what’s next. I’ll talk with my wife first. I still have a strong desire to get in the ring, but I’m 39 now. My health is very important to me. I want to be there for my family and my daughter. So we’ll have to wait and see.”
TONY HARRISON
“I wanted to stay focused and get in my rhythm. The whole point is to hit and not get hit, and I thought I did a great job of that through eight rounds. I just need to stay focused for the whole fight.
“I got kind of careless in the ninth round and the same thing happened tonight that happened against Willie Nelson, but thankfully I had the experience this time to pull it out.
“I wanted to show the fans that I can take a punch, and I definitely showed that tonight.
“I’m back! Next time I want to fight someone that’s a little more offensive. (McCalla) was throwing so few punches that it was actually hard to get down the timing against him.
“I’d love to fight back home in Detroit next, and I’d like to face the winner of tonight’s main event. I’m ready. I also want Willie Nelson again though. If he can do it twice he’ll make me a believer.”
CECIL MCCALLA
“I kept looking for the right moment. I came into the fight trying to outwork him, but I just couldn’t pull it off.
“When I caught him with the overhand right I wanted the knockout, but it didn’t come.
“Harrison’s jab played the biggest part in him getting the win tonight.
“I want another opportunity as soon as possible and I’ll make sure to make the most of it.
“I want to fight Ishe (Smith) again.”
CALEB PLANT
“The plan tonight was to stay composed and relaxed. I was doubling up my jab and landing combinations up and down his body all fight.
“I saw him start to break down after the second and third rounds, but I didn’t want to push too hard. Instead I wanted to stay in control, take him into deep waters, and dominate the fight. That’s what I did.
“I’d love to fight again this year, maybe in late December. I’m not taking any punishment, and we’re always staying in shape and ready. So as long as I’m healthy I’ll fight as often as I can against whoever they put in front of me.”
TYRONE BRUNSON
“I thought my power was working well for me tonight. My corner was telling me to throw the left to the body and it was landing.
“Caleb caught me once in my left eye in the third round and he had me seeing double for a little while, but it didn’t last beyond that round.
“I’m naturally a junior middleweight. That’s where I’m most comfortable. I can compete against anyone at 154 lbs.”

HOUSTON (October 29, 2015) – Before the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBCSN fight card this Saturday, some of the fighters hosted a media workout at Charlo Brothers Boxing Academy. The card will feature a main event showcasing undefeated rising star Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (26-0, 11 KOs) out of Houston, Texas taking on former world champion Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KOs).
Televised coverage will begin at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT with the hard-hitting Tony Harrison (21-1, 18 KOs) taking on Cecil McCalla (20-2, 7 KOs).
Here is what Jermell Charlo had to say before stepping in the ring on Saturday:
JERMELL CHARLO
“Fighting here in Houston in front of my hometown crowd with all of my family and friends to support me is huge. This is my first opportunity to fight as a main event in my city, and I’m excited to put on a great show for the fans.
“Joachim Alcine does certain things in the ring that I’ve seen and taken note of. There are some things I believe I can take advantage of. Hopefully he makes those mistakes and I can make him pay. But he puts in hard work. I know I’m not just going to go in there and beat him up. I’m going to have to be smart, but it should be a very entertaining fight.
“Sometimes too much experience can be a bad thing. Alcine is going to come in there on Saturday and try to use his experience to beat me, but I’m confident he’s going to run into some problems with me.
“My plan is to come in strong and powerful, be the faster man, move a lot and try to make him commit to the things he’s used to seeing me do in previous fights. And that’s how we’re going to open him up.
“I don’t necessarily have a prediction, but I’m going to knock him out. I don’t know what round it will be, but he’s going down.”

Undefeated with all but two victories coming by knockout, the 23-year-old Plant returns to the ring fresh off of a victory in September over Jamar Freeman. The Ashland, Tennessee-born fighter will be fighting in Texas for the first time as a pro, looking to display the knockout power that has helped him accumulate his undefeated record. A victory onOctober 31 would make him 6-0 in a busy 2015.
The local talent on the undercard includes a trio of Houston-natives as 22-year-old Devonte Williams (8-0, 5 KOs) takes on Rick Graham (3-9-2, 1 KO) out of Detroit in a six-round super welterweight bout, 28-year-old Pablo Cruz (11-1, 3 KOs) facing Mexico’s Andres Lara (5-3, 1 KO) and Jesse Gonzalez (4-1, 2 KOs) battling Kenneth Williams (3-2-1, 1 KO) of Palm Springs, California in a four-round welterweight contest.
The Houston-flavor continues with Uzbekistan-born Bahodir Mamadjonov (17-2, 11 KOs), who fights out of Houston, in an eight-round super lightweight bout, 22-year-old Christon Edwards (4-0, 3 KOs) in a four-round super welterweight bout.
Further action features 30-year-old Levan Ghvamichava (15-1-1, 12 KOs) of Poti, Georgia in an eight-round lightweight showdown against Honolulu’s Cameron Kreal (8-7-2, 1 KO), 25-year-old Jonathan Morales of Channel View, Texas against Patrick Simea (1-3) from Houston in a four-round super middleweight contest and the pro debuts of Allison Edwards of Spring, Texas and California’s Kathryn Talley as they compete in a four-round lightweight contest.
Rounding out the night of fights is 21-year-old Marshall Sanchez (1-0) of Humble, Texas in a four-round flyweight bout against Elio Ruiz (1-6) of Austin, Texas, Lucia Osegueda(5-1) of Baytown, Texas facing Dallas-native Jasmine Clarkson (2-4) in a four-round lightweight bout and 26-year-old David Limerick Jr. (4-0, 2 KOs) of Katy, Texas squaring-off against Guatemala’s Rolando Rivas (3-2-1, 2 KOs) in a four-round welterweight bout.
