The GOAT boxing trainer….. Emanuel Steward

USA Cumann Dornálaíochta Alumni, Aicme na 2018 Inductee
(L-R) – The great Tommy Hearns & the late Manny Steward

COLORADO SPRINGS, Lap. (Samhain 19, 2018) – The late Emanuel Steward, arguably the greatest boxing trainer of all-time, is a member of the Class of 2018 getting inducted into the USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame.

The second annual USA Boxing Alumni Association Hall of Fame reception, held in conjunction with the 2018 Comórtas Náisiúnta Dornálaíochta Mionlach agus Óige Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá agus Oscailte Sóisearach agus Prep, Nollaig 2-8, will be held December 7, at the Radisson Hotel (215 S. Temple St.) i gCathair Salt Lake, Utah.

Steward was a boxer, trainer extraordinaire, and HBO commentator until his untimely death in 2012 ag aois 68. His boxing career culminated with his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996.

Ag an aois 12, Manny moved with his mother from West Virginia to Detroit, where his life soon turned to boxing. Mar Boxer amaitéarach, he compiled a 94-3 taifead, chun suntais ag feidhmíocht ór-bonn ag an 1963 National Golden Gloves Tournament as a bantamweight, but he decided against trying out for the US Olympic Boxing Team.

I 1971, Steward became a part-time trainer at Kronk Gym, where he eventually guided many of the country’s top amateur boxers. Kronk Gym later became a property of Steward’s and he developed it into one of the most successful and famous boxing gyms in the world.

Steward also served as National Director of Coaching for USA Boxing in the early 2000’s.

Throughout his incredible career, Steward reportedly trained 41 Seaimpíní domhan, b'fhéidir, the most noteworthy were Tomás Ó hEileann, Lennox Lewis agus Wladimir Klitschko. He also trained Julio Cesar Chavez, Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, Naseem Hamed, Evander Holyfield, agus Mike McCallum. Manny also trained a young Detroit rapper, Eminem, how to box at Kronk Gym.

The last world champion Manny trained was Vernalis “Superman” Stevenson, who remains the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) World light heavyweight champion since 2013.

Emanuel would always say, knockouts dhíol!” Stevenson fondly remembered. “He was also the first to tell me, ‘You will be a superstar and a world champion. Just make sure you don’t listen to people with bad intentions because you’ve got natural talent. He believed in me even if some people did not think I would ever become a world champion.

Emanuel Steward impacted the lives of so many who walked through the doors of Kronk Gym,” Dúirt chris tofflemire, USA Boxing Alumni Association Executive Director. “While he’s most recognized for his achievement at the professional level, his impact was significant in the amateurs. Manny serves as a model coach for USA Boxing today, and his impact will be felt for a long time. The USA Boxing Alumni Association overwhelmingly supports his induction and looks forward to honoring him as part of this year’s Hall of Fame class.

For years he would come to my National Silver Gloves Tournament that I sponsored and put on in Kansa City just to show his support of the youth program,” added USA Boxing president John Brown chur leis. “Every year I would tell him to let me know if he was coming, so I could VIP him, and every year he would ignore me and just quietly show up. I would notice him in the crowd. I would ball him out and then we did the same thing the following year.

I also used to see him at big fights and he would always make me feel special by saying my company saved boxing in the seventies and eighties by providing safe, well-made, fair priced boxing equipment for the sport. No one else ever gave me that recognition. He was humble and not a blowhard, my kind of guy.

Emanuel Steward left his mark on earth, not only as a multi-faceted personality in boxing, but he’s also remembered for his magnanimous charity work in Detroit, in which he helped youths in their pursuit of education.

I mbeagán focal, cé, he taught boxing, and nobody has ever done it any better.

Prospect Known as ‘The Future of BoxingAppearing Tonight in Philadelphia

Anocht (Meán Fómhair 22), at the SugarHouse Casino in Philadelphia, a young prospect being calledthe future of boxingby some important people will have the toughest fight of his career.

In one of the main supporting bouts of Hard Hitting Promotions’ (in association with Greg Cohen Promotions & Promotions Devin Haney) “Fight Night at The Sugarhouse” imeacht, WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion and top-ranked amateur, Devin “An aisling” Haney (16-0, 11 Kos), will face Mexico’s Enrique Tinoco (16-4-3, 12 Kos) i taispeántas ocht-bhabhta.

The event is topped by Philadelphia heavyweight Joey “An umar” Dawejko (17-4-4, 10 Kos) taking on Detroit’s Demetrius Banks (9-1, 4 Kos) in an eight-round battle. Tickets are priced at Front row VIP: $150, VIP: $100, Ringside: $65 agus Cead Ginearálta: $45 agus is féidir a cheannach ag www.hardhittingpromotions.com.

So advanced in skills at a young age was Haney, a Mayweather family associate, that he turned pro in Mexico at 16 agus, ag aois 18, is undefeated in 16 troideanna. He is trained by well-respected former world champion Mike McCallum.

Haney also has the distinction of being the youngest promoter in boxing, as he also operates Devin Haney Promotions.

This is the toughest fight of your career; did you do anything differently in training?

I did the same stuff I always do. This is what I’ve prepared for my whole life, so I’m always ready.

Tell me about working with an all-time great like Mike McCallum as your trainer.

I’ve been working with Mike for about three fights and it’s going great. I’ve learned a lot of things from him.

Cad a cheapann tú de do chéile comhraic, Enrique Tinoco?

I saw him fight a while back. Watched him live. He looks rugged and put some pressure on his opponent. He comes to fight, but I definitely know what to do with him. I had a lot of experience in the amateurs and have sparred a lot of great pros. I’m ready for whatever he has to bring to the able.

What’s it feel like when someone like Floyd Mayweather calls you the ‘future of the sport?’

Mothaíonn sé go hiontach. I worked hard for people to acknowledge me in the sport and compare me to the top fighters in boxing right now. Floyd is like a mentor to me. Both Floyds are. I just want to keep training hard an showing everybody that I really am the future of boxing. I don’t feel any pressure to perform perfectly every time though. I don’t believe in pressure. That’s all in the head. I’m just going to go in there and showcase my skills.

Anocht, doirse oscailte ag 6PM agus is é an chéad bout ag 7PM. The Sugarhouse casino is located at 1001 N Delaware Avenue i Philadelphia.

@ Monique’s Lounge (aka 108 Lounge)

East Harlem, Nua-Eabhrac

I am proud to officially announce my 6th Official Amateur Boxing Reunion that will take place on March 18 at Monique’s Lounge in Harlem, Nua-Eabhrac. I am expecting by far the largest turn out of any of the previous 5 reunions which were held twice at Rival Boxing in Las Vegas, once at Jimmy’s Corner in Manhattan and once each at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casinos.
Of the over 100 boxers attending this far, among them I expect the likes of 1988 Oilimpeacha bhuaigh bonn Silver Riddick Big Daddy Bowe, NYC Golden Gloves Champ “nimh” Jones Sóisearach, 1984 Olympic champ Mark Breland, 1974 National Junior Olympic champ Marlon Starling, 1996 USA Olympic team captain Lawrence Clay-Bey agus 1988 Lámhainní náisiúnta Golden Champion Marcáil “Ró-Sharp” Johnson.
At my past reunions, including the most recent one held at the Rival Boxing Store in Las Vegas on Samhain 18, we’ve had the likes of Roy Jones Jr., Alex “An Bomber Bronx” Ramos, 1992 Olympian Montell Griffin, former three time world champions Mike McCallum and Iran Barkley, agus “An Trodaire” and Irish Micky Ward in attendance.
Among the most special of moments at my reunions, we had Mike McCallum and Alex Ramos, who met each other in the semi-finals of the 1980 NYC Golden Gloves, reconnect in Las Vegas in late 2014, we had Luis Ortiz and Lawrence Clay-Bey, who were brought together in 2015 at Foxwoods after not only not seeing each other in 38 YEARS but after not even knowing they fought against each other in 1977 until just a few days before they reunited and in NYC over the summer of 2015 we had 1984 New York City Golden Gloves 156 pound champion and runner up DennisThe MagicianMilton and Jesse Lanton connect once again.
Any media who wish to attend the event in Harlem, New York on March 18 are more than welcome to be a part of the festivities.

“Iceman” 4ú Teacht le chéile Oifigiúla Amaitéarach Dornálaíochta John Scully

Beidh sé seo mo 4ú teacht le chéile dornálaithe amaitéaracha oifigiúil, agus tharla an chéad trí cinn i Las Vegas (Nollaig 2014), Nua-Eabhrac (Meitheamh 2015) agus Foxwoods Casino i Connecticut (Iúil 2015).
I measc na dhornálaithe a d’fhreastail ar athchruinnithe roimhe seo tá leithéidí curadh an domhain ceithre huaire, Roy Jones Jr., Seaimpíní an domhain Mike trí huaire “An Scioból Coirp” McCallum agus an Iaráin “An Blade” Barkley, Curadh trom-mheáchain WBO Lamon Brewster, iar-churadh trom éadrom WBC Montell “Oighear” Grifín, 1988 U.S. Traenálaí Oilimpeacha Kenny Adams.
Bhí an smaoineamh seo agam mo chomhghleacaithe amaitéaracha a thabhairt le chéile le blianta fada anuas agus i mí na Nollag 2014 Ag an Rival Boxing Store i Las Vegas bhí mo chéad teacht le chéile dornálaithe amaitéaracha agam faoi dheireadh agus d’éirigh go hiontach leis. Ó shin i leith tá dhá cheann eile agam (ag Jimmy's-Glenn- Cúinne ar W. 44th St. i NYC agus ag Foxwoods Casino i Connecticut)cruinnithe rathúla a chonaic gach duine ó amaitéarach áitiúil, Seaimpíní réigiúnacha Golden Gloves, Seaimpíní náisiúnta an AAU, Seaimpíní domhan, Oilimpigh agus gach leibhéal eile is féidir de dornálaí amaitéarach.
Bhí sé beartaithe agam ar dtús go mbeadh dhornálaithe ó mo rang trialacha Oilimpeacha (1988)bhailiú le haghaidh teacht le chéile ach d'athraigh sé go dtí aon ré nó leibhéal. Chuige sin bhí dornálaithe againn ó 1976 A.A.U. Curadh náisiúnta Bret Summers ó Washington State agus 1976 Mike McCallum, an tIamáiceánach Oilimpeach, an bealach ar fad suas go dtí 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason Estrada.
Go bunúsach is deis é dúinn teacht le chéile, cuimhnigh, scéalta a insint, féach seanchairde, bualadh le daoine nár bhuaileamar leo riamh. B'fhéidir gurb é an sampla is fearr dá bhfuil i gceist le mo chuid teacht le chéile a tháinig ag an 2015 imeacht ag Foxwoods nuair a chas mé Luis Ortiz ó Hartford agus Lawrence Clay-Bey le chéile don chéad uair ó chuir siad i mboscaí ar a chéile mar leanaí óga ag Marc Anthony’s i Hartford ar ais i 1977!
CATHAIN: Iúil 23, 2016, 12 meán lae go dtí 4 pm
NUAIR: Bialann Margaritaville taobh istigh den Mohegan Sun casino @ Uncasville, Connecticut.
WHO: Áiríonn aíonna ar tugadh cuireadh dóibh agus a bhfuiltear ag súil leo, i measc go leor eile:

1985 curadh meáchain welter ESPN “Buachaill scoile” Troy Wortham
curadh meáchan welter WBA agus meánmheáchain sóisear Jose Antonio Rivera

Iar curadh domhanda dhá roinn “nimh” Sóisear Jones ó Brooklyn, NY

Oighear

Quote: “

An fanacht sa seomra feistis roimh chluiche dornálaíochta gairmiúil - an uair dheireanach sin- d’fhéadfadh gur leor é chun fear nár chuir i mboscaí riamh roimhe sin de cibé bród, fonn agus croí a shíl sé a bhí aige”Oighearfhear John Scully, Aibreán 2002

“Is bráithreachas daingean í an dornálaíocht. Tá aithne ag gach éinne ar gach éinne. Ach tarraingeofar líne sa roisín go deo a scarfaidh iad siúd a chéimíonn isteach sa fháinne cearnach agus iad siúd NÁ. go leor, déanann go leor daoine airgead ar troid, ach nuair a chloiseann an clog, ní fhreagraíonn ach beirt é.” Randy Smith, Feabhra 2003, Fiafraí Irise (Manchain, Conn.)
