Jose Antonio Rivera Dedicates “Quest For 50” to Worcester Boys & girls Club

WORCESTER, MASSA (Maggio 16, 2019) – Tre volte, campione del mondo due divisioni “Il Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera is dedicating his 50^th lotta pro, the last in his hometown of Worcester, to the Boys & Girls Club in Worcester, Massachusetts. A portion of the proceeds from “Quest For 50,” presented by Shearns Boxing Promotions (SBP) and Rivera Promotions Entertainment, will benefit the Boys & girls Club.

The 46-year-old Rivera (42-6-1, 25 KO) faces former WFC champion **Travis “Sweet Feet” Scott** (19-5, 5 KO), of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the eight-round main event at The Palladium in Worcester.

Rivera, a full-time court officer in Worcester, has had a special relationship for more than 30 years with the Worcester Boys & Girls Club and its director of boxing, **Carlos Garcia**, che è “The Godfather of Worcester Boxing.”

Rivera moved to Worcester from Springfield 30 years ago at the age of 16 to pursue a boxing career, which included being coached by Garcia. Rivera had siblings and other relatives living in Worcester and after living with an aunt for a month, Jose moved into an apartment with another boxer, four-time national amateur champion **Bobby Harris**.

“The Worcester Boys & Girls Club helped me stay off the streets so I could focus on my dream of becoming world champion,” Rivera remembered. “It was a place for me and so many others to go and be safe. Kids, not just boxers, can be kids there, where they don’t have to worry about what’s happening in the streets.

“Carlos has played a tremendous part of my life and so many others, influencing us not only to become good boxers, but to be good people in the community. That was always so important to him and he emphasized being a good person. Ho fatto del mio meglio. He was always fair across the board and gave us all opportunities. He took a liking to me and brags that he never had to throw me out of the Boys & girls Club. I graduated from high school and went after my dream in 1992 when I turned pro. Carlos is big in amateur boxing, but not so much with pros, because he doesn’t have the time to train pros. I made sure that when turned pro, tough, that he was part of my team. And he’s still a big part of my team and life.”

The number of Worcester youths Garcia has had a positive effect on, life-changing in many respects, is countless. One of those many people is Jose’s longtime friend and his current head trainer, **Sean Fitzgerald**, who retired as a boxer in 2001 con 29-2-2 pro record. “Fitzy” remembers the fir time he read the sign over the door in the gym at the Boys & girls Club: “Better to seat than bleed.”

Fitzy lived with his father when his parents divorced and at the age of 10, his father sent him to the Boys & Girls Club to attend an after-school program. “Fitzy” said he had to earn his way into Garcia’s good graces.

“Carlos didn’t talk to me for the first 5-6 settimane,” Fitzgerald explained. “Poi, he put me in the ring as a sparring partner, and I was badly beaten. I had a bloody nose and black eye, but the next day I came back, e il resto è storia. Carlos was a great mentor, rough at times, but always there for you. I remember seeing the boxing team jackets. It intrigued me. When I got my jacket and started wearing it, I got respect from everybody, and then I knew that I belonged. I learned a lot about life at the Boys & girls Club, being with there with people from different generations and cultures. I met many friends there who I never would have met.

“The Boys & Girls Club is safe. I was from a tough area in Worcester. My father worked and it was easy to get in trouble with no supervision. Carlos stayed on top of me to graduate from school and if I was home sick, he come buy with chicken soup to make sure I was alright. My father was in my life big-time, but I joke that I had two moms growing up, my father and Carlos. Going to the Boys & Girls Club was something to look forward to every day.

“Carlos always taught us to never make the mistakes he did in life. He wanted us to go to school, stay out of trouble, and be a good person. He’s helped so many people over the years. Look around Worcester and you’ll see them: police and court officers, fire fighters, e tanti altri. The Boys & Girls Club was a great experience for me and so many other kids from Worcester.”

Garcia has been the director of boxing at the Worcester Boys & Girls Club since 1982. Two year ago, Garcia was inductred into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame.

“Never in his life has Jose even raised his voice to me,” Garcia commented. “He treats me like his father and he’s like one of my sons. There aren’t not too many guys like him and he’s so well respected in the community. He came to Worcester from Springfield to train with ne and stayed with me. Jose helps everyone and now he’s promoting to help local boxers.

“We’re at the Boys & Girls Club to and that’s the way it really is here. It’s so good to see so many in this community who’ve gone through our boxing program and are good people, good husbands, good parents. It makes me feel so proud. ‘Fitzy’ was a hyper kid. He’s a real gentleman who now does so much for kids here. I’ve never had a signed contract with any of the pro boxers I’ve worked with because I trust them.”

Coming off the heels of the sold out **4th Annual St. Giorno Scontro di Patrick** which has amassed over **225,000** online views, **Murphys Boxing** is proud to announce the creation of the **Warrior’s Code Award** to celebrate the achievements of New England’s most legendary boxers.

The award’s first recipients will be **2019 International Boxing Hall of Fame** indotto,**Tony DeMarco** and one of Massachusetts’ most decorated amateur boxers, **Mike D’Ampolo**.

Both fighters will be presented with their awards next **Venerdì, March 29th** at the Murphys Boxing event at **Memorial Hall** in **Melrose, Massachusetts**.

A **87 anni**, Tony DeMarco holds the distinction of being **boxing’s oldest living world champion** and has been a beloved figure in the Boston sports world for over half a century.

Known as ‘Nardo’, the Boston fighter of Italian descent, turned pro unbelievably just a few years after the end of World War II. In un 14 year career, DeMarco went 52-12-1 while fighting during boxing’s golden age. His legendary battles with Hall of Famers like **Carmen Basilio** e **Kid Gavilin** made DeMarco a star and he won the **welterweight world title** in 1955 contro **Johnny Saxton** at the original Boston Garden in a fight that was voted one of **Boston’s Top 10 Sports Moments**.

DeMarco, who still can be found ringside at Murphys Boxing events and whose statue resides in Boston’s North End where he still lives, will receive the long overdue honor of joining the International Boxing Hall of Fame as a 2019 inductee this June.

“Murphys Boxing has always been very welcoming to me and my family.”, explains DeMarco.

“They have a true respect for boxing’s history. It’s an honor to be given their first ever award just months before entering the International Boxing Hall of Fame. I am looking forward to the evening.”

Joining DeMarco will be Melrose’s own, Mike D’Ampolo, who is considered one of the most successful amateurs ever to come out of the state of Massachusetts.

“I’m humbled. Back when we were fighting, there wasn’t much recognition or credit given to amateurs.”, says D’Ampolo.

“I used to be in the paper back then but it’s been a long time and I’m just very grateful to Murphys Boxing for remembering and honoring me here in my hometown.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Giro. (Marzo 12, 2019) – Dai progetti al possesso del titolo individuale probabilmente più rispettato nello sport, **Giovanni “The Quietman” Ruiz** rimane l'unico latinoamericano a conquistare l'ambito titolo mondiale dei pesi massimi.

Ruiz, 47, è un orgoglioso pugile americano portoricano cresciuto in un Chelsea, Massachusetts. La due volte World Boxing Association (WBA) campione dei pesi massimi, ha sconfitto la Hall of Famer della USA Boxing Alumni Association **Evander Holyfield** nella seconda delle tre lotte per il titolo, per proteggere per la prima volta, la corona mondiale dei pesi massimi.

Oltre alla sua già citata vittoria al Festival Olimpico di Los Angles, che lo ha qualificato come membro del Team USA per competere ai Campionati del Mondo in Australia (finito 6^th al mondo), forse il momento clou della sua carriera amatoriale è stata la sconfitta **Torsten May**, il 1992 Vincitore della medaglia d'oro olimpica dalla Germania, in un doppio incontro in Florida.

“La mia associazione con John risale al 1990,” aggiunto **Al Valenti**, Consulente per progetti speciali di boxe USA. “Ero elettrizzato dal fatto che un ragazzo del posto stesse affinando le sue capacità sul ring. “I’m very proud to have accomplished that,” he continued, “but my main goal was to provide for my family and I always maintained that goal. Most fighters don’t succeed, but at the end of the day, that’s what pushed me. I don’t really think about being the only Latino to win the world heavyweight title, ma, when I hear people talk about it today, Penso che, wow, I’m still the only Latino to do that.”

Several years ago, Ruiz opened a gym (Quietman Sport Gym) in Medford, MA, not too far from where he grew up in Chelsea and trained in Somerville. It has been a registered club member by USA Boxing since 2012, ma, ma ancora più importante, it’s Ruiz’ way of giving back to amateur boxing.

“I won the **Massachusetts State Heavyweight Title** on the Murphys Paddys Day show in 2017 and it was an amazing experience. The atmosphere is like nothing I’ve ever witnessed at a boxing event. I’m looking forward to being part of it again.”

Kennedy, despite hailing from Gorey, Ireland where he works full time as a policeman, ha combattuto 10 della sua 13 professional fights in the New England area and actually considers Boston his boxing home.

“I’m blessed with the support that I have received from the people of Boston and Massachusetts in general. I have a large family connection in the state who bring out massive support so when it comes to boxing homes, Boston is my first boxing home.”

As for 2019, Kennedy is dead set on upping the competition and even has his eyes on a fellow unbeaten heavyweight who like himself is creating a buzz in a boxing crazed east coast city.

“My goal is always to improve with each fight. I want to be world ranked and fight the top names in the division but I know if that’s going to happen, 2019 has to be a huge year for me. There’s a lot of fighters I want to share the ring with but right now I think myself vs Philadelphia’s **Darman Roccia** is a fight that should and will happen.”

The Saint Patrick’s Day Clash will truly be an Irish heavy affair as Kennedy joins a card that has fellow Murphys Boxing stablemate, Cork, Irlanda **Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan** (29-3, 20 KO) in a risky fight against **Khiary Grey** (16-4, 12 KO) as well as the much anticipated all Irish welterweight showdown between Cork, Irlanda **John Joyce** (7-0, 4 KO) and Lucan, Irlanda **Noel Murphy** (12-1-1, 2 KO).

Headlining the annual event will be **NABA Junior Middleweight Champion**, Massachusetts’ **Mark DeLuca** (22-1, 13 KO) who will put his title, and his **superiore 10 world ranking**, on the line against Connecticut’s **Jimmy Williams** (16-1-1, 5 KO).
