(Lub yim hli ntuj 6, 2017) – Former New England welterweight champion Derek “The Surgeon” Silveira defeated former world title challenger Michael “Khaub thuas ntshav” Clark last night (Sat., Aug. 5) nyob rau hauv lub “Fight Night at the Bay” ntsiab kev tshwm sim, presented by Granite Chin Promotions, at Marina Bay Sportplex in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Silveira (12-1, 6 Kos), of Salem MA) used his height and length advantage to out-box the much more experienced Clark (44-16-1, 18 Kos). Due to what appeared to be a broken right hand, Clark was unable to continue after six rounds.

Undefeated Irish junior middleweight Paddy Irwin (4-0, 3 Kos), fighting at home in Quincy, methodically broke-down Demetrius Thomas (0-5), dropping him with a right hand in the second round, and floored him with a flurry of punches en route to a third-round stoppage only moments later by referee Ryan.

Poland-native Lopes (17-4-2, 1 KO), fighting out of Marshfield (MA), is a 37-year-old lawyer who practices in Brockton (MA). She lost a pair of vacant World Boxing Council (Qhov) Super Welterweight title fights to a Pole in Poland, Swede in Sweden. Last September, Lopes lost a 10-round decision to Ewa Piatkowska (9-1) in Poland; she dropped a 10-round majority decision in Sweden to Mikaela Lauren (22-3) nyob rau hauv 2014. Nyob rau hauv 2013, Lopes lost a 10-round unanimous decision in Rhode Island to Tori Nelson (6-0-3) for the vacant International Boxing Association (IBA) World Welterweight Championship.
The highlight of Lopes’ 8 ½-year professional career, deb deb li no, is her 10-round complete shutout (100-90 X 3) decision victory, Lub Xya hli ntuj 30, 2016, rau Szilvia Szagbados (13-6) nyob rau hauv lub zos Plymouth (MA) for the vacant WBC Silver female welterweight crown. Lopes vs. Garland has world title fight implications for the winner. “I’d like to position myself for one more world title shot,” Lopes said. “I’m still learning every fight and I haven’t reached my plateau yet. Garland has good experience, she’s been around as long as I’ve been fighting. I can’t afford to lose this fight, but I’ve always had that in the back of my mind. I need an experienced opponent like her to push me, to learn something new, and I always like to fight at home.
“It’s tough to fight here (U.S.) for a world title. You almost always need to travel overseas. We’re limited here because of the required purse (for the defending champion to come to the states) and sanctioning fees for promoters in America. Women’s boxing is more popular in Europe, Mexico and parts of South America. But I have had a very good run and great relationships with New England promoters, who’ve put me on their cards.
“I think women’s boxing maybe, just maybe, will start changing if the trend continues as fighters such as Clarissa Shields thiab Katie Taylor, women boxers who’ve made names in the Olympics, keep turning pro. Amanda Serrano has gotten some good exposure fighting on television, heev. We’ve had to travel for world title fights but, hopefully, things are changing for the better.”

Derek Silveira making up for lost time Headlining “Fight Night at the Bay”

Welterweight champion Derek Silveira Is trying to make up for lost time, 3 ½ years of ring inactivity from the summer of 2013 until this past April, as he prepares to headline the August 5th “Fight Night at the Bay” card, presented by Granite Chin Promotions, at Marina Bay Sportplex in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Silveira (12-1, 6 Kos), fighting out of Salem (MA), will face former world title challenger Michael “Khaub thuas ntshav” Clark (44-16-1, 18 Kos) in the eight-round main event.
The 31-year-old Silveira fought for a long time with bones spurs in his right elbow. He underwent surgery and later went to training camp in Las Vegas for a fight that, hmoov tsis, fell through. Ces, as a worker for a moving company, he fell through steps, resulting in torn labrum in his left hip. It took a terribly frustrating 1 ½ years for his insurance company to finally approve the operation, which was followed, ntawm chav kawm, by a lengthy therapy program.
“A long process,” Silveira said. “It was tough watching everybody fight while I was unable. I even had to watch guys fight for the New England title that I never lost in the ring but was unable to keep because I couldn’t fight.”
Silveira was a decorated New England amateur boxer with more than 300 ntais ntawv, including six consecutive Central Mass (Lowell) Golden Gloves titles and two New England championships (he lost a decision one year to current world junior middleweight champion Demethi-aus Andrade), as well as multiple Rocky Marciano Tournament gold medals to go along with those he won at the Silver Mittens and Junior Olympics.
Tam sim no 31 and having fought the past 20 xyoo, Silveira is hungry to prove himself on a grander scale, starting Aug. 5 with Clark. “He will be a good test for me for a comparison to where I was in the past,” Silveira commented about his veteran opponent. “Clark is a veteran who fights on his toes. I used to watch him when he was on Lub contender (televised realty show). My sparring partner back then was (lub lig) Jeff Fraza, who also was on Lub contender. It’ll be good to see where I am.
“I grew up as a boxer. I had huge legs, strong upper body, and good footwork. I played soccer as a kid. I lacked power. The last few years I’ve worked on my power. I want to look good and not get hit by his strong right hand.”
Silveira has one of the largest fan-bases in New England, largely from North Shore (ntawm Boston) zej zog, and Derek knows that they will be out in force supporting him Aug. 5. “My fans travel,” he insisted. “Quincy isn’t too far from the North Shore, certainly closer than Foxwoods (Mashantucket, I), and I had a lot of fans there.
