J RUSSELL PELTZ HONORED BY PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL Philadelphia icon recognized for half century of promoting boxing in the city

PHILADELPHIA PA — Members of the Philadelphia City Council presented a resolution honoring J Russell Peltz at this morning’s council meeting on behalf of President Darrell Clarke. The resolution recognized Peltz’ contribution to the city over 50 years of promoting boxing in Philadelphia. President Clarke serves as the City Councilman for District 5, where Peltz promoted his first boxing event at the Blue Horizon on September 30, 1969.

The resolution gave a brief history of Peltz’ career before thanking him for the profound impact he had on the city over the last 50 flynyddoedd. It also expressed the wish that the next generation of boxing promoters continue to preserve Philadelphia’s legacy as a boxing stronghold.

Peltz was gracious in his remarks, and had the crowd laughing when he began speaking about his career.

“I’m humbled to be honored by the city,” he began, “because if you think about it, the only thing I’ve done over the last 50 years is start fights that other people finish.

“I’ve grown up in the greatest fight city in the world,” he continued. “Some of the greatest fighters of all time have fought for me – hall of fame fighters – beginning with my first love, Bennie Briscoe in 1969, and going all the way up through one of my fighters winning a world title in Bejing, China a couple years ago by the name of Jason Sosa.”

He closed his remarks with a story about playing “Cowboys & Indians” as a kid, and how he thought it would be so cool if he could just play the game as an adult, instead of going to work every day. “Onest, that’s what my career has been like,” dywedodd, and thanked the Council for the honor.

Peltz was joined in attendance by his wife, Linda, and his protege and the promoter of Friday’s “Blood, Sweat and 50 Blynyddoedd” fight card at 2300 Arena, Michelle Rosado.

Philadelphia’s boxing community to come together
To mark “The Boy Wonder’s” 50-year milestone




PHILADELPHIA, PA–J Russell Peltz was 22 years old when he promoted his first boxing card 50 years ago at the legendary Blue Horizon. Ar Hydref. 4, Peltz will celebrate half a century as a boxing promoter with a card at the 2300 Arena that will reflect his reputation for promoting Philly vs. Philly, no-quarters-given bouts.


The eight-fight card, promoted by Raging Babe, will feature junior welterweight Victor Padilla, of Berlin, NJ, by way of Vieques, Puerto Rico, yn y prif ddigwyddiad. Padilla, who is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, is undefeated in five fights, all by way of knockout, and is considered by Peltz and others to be a future world champion. Peltz will serve as matchmaker for the event.


It has been nearly 20 years since Peltz received the Long and Meritorious Service award from the Boxing Writers Association of America and Philadelphia Sportswriters Association, followed in 2004 by his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. While others might have considered retirement, Peltz has gone on to promote more than 150 additional events, bringing his total number of promoted shows to nearly 1,000. He has promoted or co-promoted more than 40 world championship fights.


After starting his career as sports editor of the Temple News–the daily student newspaper at Temple University–and then on the sports copy desk at the Evening and Sunday Bulletin, Peltz traded in his typewriter for the roller coaster that is professional boxing. He was dubbed “The Boy Wonder,” when he sold out the 1,346-seat Blue Horizon in his first event on Sept. 30, 1969, a night that featured a middleweight main event between Bennie Briscoe, o Philadelphia, and Tito Marshall, of Panama. The standing-room-only crowd was 1,606.


In more recent years, he’s taken Michelle Rosado (aka Raging Babe) under his wing, mentoring her and showing her the ins and outs of the boxing business with his unique brand of tough love.


“I can think of no one better to promote my 50th Anniversary Celebration,” said Peltz. “I have been able to sit in the passenger seat the last couple years while Michelle drove and I’m excited to share this special event with her.


“It seems like yesterday I was sitting outside the Blue Horizon in North Philly, selling tickets out of my car for my first card after the box office closed for the day. From there to the old Arena in West Philly, then to The Spectrum in South Philly, it’s been quite a ride. Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Ewrop, South America, the Orient–I cannot believe it’s been half a century.”


Rosado: “It’s an honor to put on this card with and for Russell’s 50th. He has been an incredible mentor and friend, and I think I have looked forward to this celebration of his legacy even more than he has.”

Bout headlines Guerra De Gallos at Casino Del Sol

Tucson, THE – Hydref. 23 – When Tucson’s Jensen Ramirez (6-2-3, 1KO) squares off with Nogales’ Thomas Valdez (16-4-2, 6KO) at the Casino Del Sol’s AVA Amphitheater, fft will be the first seven-round bout in Arizona’s history. The featherweight bout headlines the Nov. 17 Digwyddiad, dubbed Guerra De Gallos.

 

 

 

Raging Babe’s Michelle Rosado had to think outside the box when negotiating the card’s main event. One camp wanted an eight-round fight and one wanted a six. Rosado, consulting with her mentor, Hall-of-Fame Promoter J Russell Peltz, lamented the potential loss of a solid, local main event. Peltz had a solution. “Why not meet in the middle and make it seven rounds?” Rosado was skeptical. “I told him to get outta here,” Rosado said. “I was laughing, but Peltz wasn’t joking. School was in session.”

 

 

 

There was a precedent. Peltz told the story of “The Long-Haired Boxer” Edwin “Chu Chu” Malave vs. Harold Weston, Jr. in a welterweight bout that took place in August of 1971 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Malave wanted the bout to be eight rounds, and Weston wanted 10. The New York State Athletic Commission proposed that the bout be nine rounds. Malave went on to win a split decision, with two judges scoring the fight 5-4 in his favor, and the third scoring it 5-4 for Weston.

“I bought right into it when Russell told me about the Malave-Weston bout,” she said. “I knew we had a good fight, and there was something special about having a seven-round main event.” Both Ramirez and Valdez’s teams agreed, and the Pascua Yacqui Commission sanctioned the seven-round bout. On Nov. 17, Tucson boxing fans will see Arizona’s first seven-round bout between two local “gallos.”

 

 

 

Raging Babe will host a press conference this Thursday, Hydref 25 at Casino Del Sol’s Paradiso Lounge at 2 p.m. The presser will be open to the public and will include a tribute to promoter Don Chargin.

J Russell Peltz reflects on his favorite fights in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY – Chwefror 20, 2018 – Boxing in Atlantic City has been prevalent for more than 45 flynyddoedd. One man who has been in the center of a lot of the action on the boardwalk has been International Boxing and Atlantic City Boxing Hall-of-Fame promoter and matchmaker J Russell Peltz.

The Philadelphia legend, who has promoted scores of cards in the shore town, is making matches for the Chwefror 24 card at The Showboat Hotel that will feature Thomas “Creision ŷd” LaManna vs. Gabriel “Tito” Bracero in a 10-round battle for the WBC Fecarbox Welterweight championship.

“I did my first fight in 1973,” said Peltz, who has run shows in just about every property in Atlantic City.

It is only fitting that Peltz is the matchmaker with promoter Rising Star Promotions in the South Jersey based promotional outfit’s effort to bring Atlantic City back to prominence as the the premier fight destination on the East Coast.

Peltz is hoping LaManna-Bracero is added to the memorable bouts that Peltz has been involved in Atlantic City:

1. Awst 31, 1981 at The Sands Hotel–Frank Fletcher vs Ernie Singletary.(PRISM)

“The fight was televised by local cable channel PRISM (Jim Barniak and Bob Wright, both deceased, did the commentary) and it was for Fletcher’s USBA middleweight title.

“This was the most brutal fight I ever saw, even more brutal than Matthew Saad Muhammad-Marvin Johnson I. This was a closet classic since few saw it on PRISM. The fight was toe-to-toe for seven rounds, no knockdowns, until ringside doctor stopped it between the seventh and eighth round. They could have fought this one in a phone booth.

“Singletary was taken to hospital after fight.

“Yn ddiweddarach, when we couldn’t find Fletcher, we broke into his hotel room, and he was out cold on the floor. We couldn’t get an ambulance so we (Marty Feldman and I) put him in the back of a police wagon and rode with him to the hospital where the doctor told us if we hadn’t found him he would have been dead.

“Singletary kept saying in the pre-fight buildup that no 12-2 TV fighter was gonna beat him. This was a reference to Fletcher getting into the first ESPN tournament and winning while Singletary had been plying his trade for years (24-2 Yna,) and never got that kind of exposure, just on PRISM. A dweud y gwir, Fletcher already had been on NBC once, beating Norberto Sabater.”

2. Medi 9, 1980 from Resorts–Mike Rossman vs. Al Bolden (PRISM)

“Ex-WBA light-heavyweight Rossman was getting beat up every round for 8 1/2 rounds against Al Bolden, Pittsburgh, PA, and finally found a little light late in round 9 and came on to knock Bolden out at 2:32 of the 10th round and salvage the win. Bolden took the second knockdown in the 10th on his knees.”

3. Mawrth 13, 1983 from Resorts–Jeff Chandler – Gaby Canizalez (ABC)

“Jeff Chandler, in the most brilliant performance of his Hall-of-Fame career out-boxed, out-punched and out-muscled future champion Gaby Canizales, of Texas, dros 15 rounds to defend his WBA bantamweight title for the seventh time by unanimous decision. No one thought he could stand up under Canizales’ body attack but it was Chandler’s body and head attack that kept Canizales at bay for the entire fight. Just magnificent.”

4. Mawrth 2, 1985 from the Sands Hotel–Gary Hinton vs Aaron Pryor (ABC)

“Unknown lefty Gary Hinton gave IBF 140 pound world champ Aaron Pryor all he could handle, but a 14th-round knockdown helped Pryor gain a 15-round split decision with Sylvester Stallone in attendance. He was our partner at the time with Pryor. It was Pryor’s last successful title defense.”

5. Tachwedd 19, 2011 from Ballys–Garrett Wilson vs. Chuck Mussachio

“Moving from light heavyweight to cruiserweight, Mussachio appeared to have out-boxed Wilson for 11 rounds in their USBA cruiserweight title fight, but Wilson drilled Mussachhio with a monstrous overhand right 41 seconds into the 12th round for the knockout win.”

Peltz Bocsio yn Dathlu Pen-blwydd Blwyddyn 46

Yn y dechreuad…
Wrth baratoi ar gyfer Dydd Gwener Puerto Rico Classic Bocsio ar yr 2300 Arena yn Philadelphia, hyrwyddwr J Russell Peltz, Neuadd Bocsio Rhyngwladol yr Enwogion, dosbarth o 2004, yn cofio ei ddechrau mewn bocsio 46 flynyddoedd yn ôl.

Heddiw, yr wyf yn dathlu-neu efallai arsylwi-pen-blwydd yn 46 fy frwydr gyntaf fel hyrwyddwr bocsio. Gallwn fod wedi aros pedair blynedd arall i ysgrifennu'r stori hon, ond mae hynny'n ymddangos fel amser hir o hyn a bet hyd yn oed mwy o amser i gyrraedd y garreg filltir.

Gwelais dim ond ychydig funudau o fy ngherdyn bocsio cyntaf. Roedd Medi. 30, 1969, yn y Blue Horizon-eto chwedlonol-ac roeddwn yn brysur yn y swyddfa docynnau gyda mom, gwerthu tocynnau i'r olaf o'r 1,606 bobl yr ydym yn eu gwasgu i mewn 'na y noson honno i wylio canol Bennie Briscoe dinistrio Tito Marshall yn eu rematch. Roedd cam-gyfathrebu gyda'r undeb sy'n cyflenwi y gwerthwyr tocynnau felly pan fyddant methu â dangos, Yr wyf yn llogi mom-gratis, wrth gwrs-ac mae hi'n helpu i werthu'r tocynnau.

Roeddwn yn 22 mlwydd oed, 15 mis ar ôl graddio o Brifysgol Deml ac yn llai na 30 diwrnodau tynnu oddi gweithio'n llawn-amser ar y staff chwaraeon yn Mae'r Bwletin Evening. Roeddwn i wedi Wobr y bocsio guro yn Y Bwletin, ond ges ddiamynedd pan Jack Fried, yr awdur bocsio, got estyniad ar ei ymddeoliad gorfodol yn yr oedran 65 ac nid oeddwn ar fin hongian o gwmpas aros am iddo ymddeol neu, gan y byddai dad yn dweud, cicio'r bwced.

Felly, yr wyf yn gwneud yr hyn bob 22-mlwydd-oed grad coleg a fagwyd ar y fawreddog Prif Linell fyddai'n gwneud-deuthum yn hyrwyddwr bocsio.

Roeddwn i wedi arbed tua $5,000 yn y coleg ers i mi wedi gweithio'n llawn amser ar yr hyn y maent yn galw y Cimwch Shift yn Y Bwletin, cychwyn yr haf ar ôl fy mlwyddyn iau yn Temple. Bûm yn gweithio o hanner nos i 8 wyf yn, straeon golygu, ysgrifennu capsiynau a phenawdau a gwneud ail-ysgrifennu yn. Yna byddwn i'n gyrru o 30 & Stryd y Farchnad i Ogledd Broad Street ar gyfer fy mlwyddyn uwch yn Temple, mynd i ddosbarth o 9 wyf i 1 pm, yna gyrru adref i'r Bala Cynwyd i fynd i gysgu.

Roedd yn flwyddyn ôl-Olympaidd yn Philly ac roedd talent ar bob cornel stryd. Yr wyf yn cofio diwedd yr haf 1969, gyrru i fyny Columbia Avenue-awr Cecil B. Moore-a throi i'r dde ar ôl 22D Street lle Columbia yn troi i mewn i Ridge. Mae dau adeilad oddi wrth y gornel yn sefyll yr enw addas Café Roach yn. Ar ben Café Roach yn, i fyny hedfan serth o risiau, Roedd Champs Gym, redeg gan Quenzell McCall, a oedd wedi gwneud ei esgyrn hyfforddi Percy Bassett a Leotis Martin a Kitten Hayward a Briscoe a llawer o ddiffoddwyr Philly top eraill.

Cyfarfûm Sam Solomon, dyn rownd-wynebu cyfeillgar oedd yn berchen ar Laundromat yng Ngorllewin Philadelphia, ac efe fy nghyflwyno i'w ymladdwr newydd, fridfa 17-mlwydd-oed a oedd yn awyddus i droi pro. Ei enw oedd Eugene Hart. Sam llysenw ef Cyclone.

Flwyddyn yn gynharach, mewn campfa yn y seler yr Eglwys Cyfarchiad ar 12fed & Norris, ychydig oddi ar y campws Temple yn, Rwyf wedi cyfweld bocsiwr amatur ifanc arall am stori ysgrifennais am Y Bwletin. Ei enw oedd Bobby Watts. Maent yn ei alw Boogaloo.

Na fu cerdyn ymladd pro yn Philly ers mis Mai a chefnogwyr lleol yn barod ar gyfer rhai camau.

Roeddwn i wedi breuddwydio am gael fy eilun bachgendod, Hall-of-Famer Harold Johnson, yn y prif ddigwyddiad, ond nid wyf yn gallu fforddio'r $2,000 yr oedd am. Rwyf wedi dod yn gyfeillgar â Pat Duffy, wedi ysgrifennu rhai straeon am bocsio amatur tra oeddwn yn yr Y Bwletin. Duffy a reolir yr amaturiaid yn ardal tri-wladwriaeth a roedd ganddo ei law yn y manteision yn ogystal. Roedd yn ymwneud â Leotis Martin a Sammy Goss a Bennie Briscoe ac am gwarant o $1,000 yn erbyn canran o'r derbyniadau giât Cawn Briscoe i ymladd rematch â Marshall, a oedd wedi curo Bennie bedair blynedd yn gynharach.

Hefyd, roedd gan Duffy a Jerry enwir pwysau trwm Barnwr, o adran Kensington o Philly, ac yr wyf yn ychwanegu ef i'r cerdyn yn ei ymddangosiad cyntaf pro. Ar y poster nodais Barnwr yn Hyrwyddwr Pwysau Trwm Kensington. Really!

George Hill, a oedd yn hyfforddi yng Champs Gym, cytuno i wneud ei ymddangosiad cyntaf yn pro hunain yn erbyn Barnwr.

Jimmy Toppi, Jr, yn berchen ar y Gorwel Las. Roedd wedi hyrwyddo ymladd mewn gwahanol leoliadau Philly yn y 1940au a'r 1950au a chyn gynted ag iddo glywed am fy mhrif ddigwyddiad, fe ragwelir yn Gwerthwyd y noson allan. Byddai Toppi cau ei swyddfa bob dydd am 2 pm, felly byddwn yn gyrru draw i'r Horizon Glas o fy fflat yn yr adran Germantown y ddinas, parcio y tu allan ac yn aros i weld a fyddai unrhyw gwsmeriaid arddangos i fyny i brynu tocynnau. Pryd bynnag yr wyf yn gweld rhywun yn ffonio cloch y drws yn y Horizon Blue, Id 'fynd allan o fy nghar, galwch draw at arnynt a'u gwerthu tocynnau allan o fy gefnffordd.

Roedd Dad yn y plymio, busnes gwresogi ac aerdymheru a chymerodd 100 tocynnau ringside a rhoddodd nhw allan at ei bartneriaid busnes. Talodd mi ar gyfer pob un ohonynt-roeddent $5 darn. Amcana ei fod yn poeni na fyddwn yn ei wneud yn yn bocsio. Daeth fy ewythr Bob at y frwydr a gafodd sâl ar ôl bwyta hotdog Blue Horizon.

Yr oeddwn yn y campfeydd bob nos, Champs a'r PAL 23 yng Ngogledd Philly, Passyunk a'r Juniper Gym yn Ne Philly. Roedd pobl eraill, ond dyna oedd y Fab Four.

Malcolm “Flash” Gordon, junkie bocsio hir-gwallt yn Efrog Newydd a oedd wedi prynu peiriant mimeograph gyda ei flynyddoedd arian Bar Mitzvah yn gynharach, cytuno i werthu ei rhaglenni yn awr-enwog yn y frwydr dros 25 cents bob.

Tom Cushman, yr awdur bocsio gyfer y Daily News, Roedd yn chwaraewr o bwys. Rwyf wedi cyfarfod Cushman yn Oklahoma City ychydig flynyddoedd cynharach. Roedd wedi dod i ben yno–ar ei ffordd dwyrain o Denver i ddechrau ei swydd newydd yn y Daily News-i dalu am dîm pêl-fasged Temple mewn twrnamaint Nadolig ac roeddwn yno fel gohebydd ar gyfer Y Bwletin.

Cushman yn gwybod bod awduron bocsio o bapurau newydd eraill yn y dref yn cymryd arian o dan y bwrdd o hyrwyddwyr i ysgrifennu storïau cyn-ymladd ac fe ddywedodd wrthyf os yw ef byth yn dal i mi ei wneud y gallwn i gusanu hwyl fawr ein cyfeillgarwch. Nid yw cyfle!

Mae'r Inquirer pennawd y diwrnod cyn fy ngherdyn: Ydy Peltz Ready I Fod Yn groen?

Rydym yn gwerthu allan. Ar y pryd, y 1,606 cefnogwyr yn bresennol yn cynrychioli y dorf mwyaf yn hanes yr Horizon Blue. Roedd y giât yn $6,010 gyda thocynnau costio $3 ac $5. Daeth canran Briscoe i $1,314.58 a Marshall cerdded allan gyda $788.75.

Canol Oscar COOR guro Clarence Finney mewn-lleol pob un o'r pedwar-rounder i agor y cerdyn-ar amser, yn naturiol, yn 8 pm-ac Cyclone Hart chwythu i ffwrdd South Philly yn Sheldon Moore, nad oedd yn ateb y gloch ar gyfer rownd dau. Ysgrifennodd hefyd fod fy (yn gyntaf) ngwraig a minnau yn byw mewn fflat yn Germantown a'r unig bethau mewn bai'n fatres, set deledu a chath o'r enw Ophelia. Gyda'r arian yr ydym yn gwneud y noson honno ($1,438.83), Grady ysgrifennodd efallai erbyn hyn byddem yn prynu rhai dodrefn.

Ychydig fisoedd yn gynharach, fy ngwraig wedi gofyn i mi beth wnaeth i mi feddwl y gallwn i fod yn llwyddiannus yn y busnes. Dywedais wrthi y byddai'n cymryd i mi am chwe mis i chwythu fy cynilion ond byddwn i'n cael llyfr lloffion gwych undydd i ddangos ein plant am yr amser eu dad yn hyrwyddwr bocsio.
