Team USA’s Youth High Performance Team Made a major statement in Germany

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Lub yim hli ntuj 4, 2025) – Last Saturday, the United States closed out the 2025 Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, in dominant fashion. After qualifying seven athletes for gold medal rounds, all seven Team USA boxers finished the day with their hands raised after the final bell. All told, the USA secured 11 medals for the week, including seven gold and four bronze.

Joscelyn Olayo-Munoz (women’s 48 kilograms | Las Cruces, N.M.) and Alexis Tangaro (women’s 54 kilograms | Waianae, Hawaii) were the two Team USA women’s gold medalists on Saturday. Lorenzo Patricio (men’s 50 kg | Waianae, Hawaii), Salim Ellis-Bey (men’s 60 kilograms | Philadelphia, Pa.), Lavant Brownlee (men’s 65 kilograms | Louisville, Ky.), Joseph Awinongya (men’s 80 kilograms | Joliet, Ill.) and Nnajai Wright (men’s 90+ kilograms | Richmond, Va.) found their way atop the podium on the USA men’s side.

Olayo-Munoz opened the day with a flawless performance in the opening bout. She stayed on the attack against her Italian opponent, Amelia Sula, and showed her ability to be the aggressor and deal out punishment throughout the bout. Olayo-Munoz blanked Sula and ultimately earned the unanimous decision victory to earn her first international medal and set the tone for the day for Team USA.

Tangaro checked into the ring two bouts later and followed suit with a 5-0 victory of her own over Lithuania’s Jelizaveta Jakimova. The Waianae, Hawaii, product was poised in the pocket and landed her shots with precision to score the unanimous decision and earn her second win of the tournament. The medal marks the first international honor of her amateur career.

Patricio stepped back into the ring with an extra day of rest behind him and put that additional recovery to good use in his 50-kg title bout. He flustered Australia’s Taj Harrington with his movement and danced around the ring, picking his shots as he circled his foe. As he typically does, Patricio turned up the volume of his attacks throughout the bout and ultimately closed it out with a 5-0 win. After receiving his gold medal, Patricio was also named the Best Technician of the tournament after racking up three wins over the final three days.

Ellis-Bey bullied his Azerbaijan opponent, Babayev Subhan, for three rounds before ultimately scoring the 5-0 win, marking his fourth victory of the week. The Philadelphia, Pa., native applied heavy pressure throughout the bout and damaged his opponent with several heavy-handed shots. Ellis-Bey closed out his first international tournament and claimed the medal that he focused on throughout his 2025 preparations.

Brownlee closed out the week with two 5-0 decisions, one in the opening round and another in the semifinals, one RSC in the quarterfinals, and a walkover decision in Saturday’s championship bout. The 65-kg title also marks the first international medal for the Louisville, Ky., native.

Awinongya impressed the masses once again and earned his second win by abandonment of the week, this time against Australia’s Khaled Bassal. After cooking Bassal for the opening two rounds, Awinongya turned up the heat in the final round and forced another eight count with his powerful right hand, which convinced the Australian team to throw in the towel. Awinongya is no stranger to international success and claims his latest medal after earning three wins throughout the week.

Wright closed the show with an outstanding performance for the United States in the 90+ kg showdown against Germany’s Ahmed Abdulgamidov. While Abdulgamidov held an incredible reach advantage over Wright, the Richmond, Va., native had a strategic game plan in place to pick his German foe apart. Wright once again utilized his agility to find his way inside his opponent’s defense and subsequently landed a flurry of damaging uppercuts. While Abdulgamidov looked strong in the first round, Wright was able to wear him down and drag him into deep waters throughout the second and third rounds. Ultimately, Wright closed the bout with a 3-0 decision, regaining favor from the judges after falling behind early in the bout.

The USA Boxing Youth High Performance team has successfully concluded its international schedule for 2025. Of the 13 athletes in competition at the Brandenburg Cup, 11 left with medals. All 14 athletes on the Youth High Performance roster have shown tremendous potential throughout the year and are sure to leave a lasting legacy within the USA Boxing High Performance department throughout the current Olympic cycle.

Team USA is led by head coach Edward Fonteneaux (Fayetteville, N.C.), and assisted by Jason Hamilton (Spanaway, Wash.), Ronald Wright (Columbus, Ga.) and Yessenia Montalvo (Bloomfield, N.J.). Live from Berlin * 3 p.m. ET/Noon PT

*Complete fight card below*

BERLIN, GERMANY (Hnub vas Xuv, Oct. 18, 2024) – Global sports streaming serviceDAZN has landed U.S., U.K. and Latin American telecast rights to Saturday’s IBF Super Middleweight World Championship between No. 1-ranked contenderWilliam Scull and No. 2-rankedVladimir Shishkin for the vacant title on the final day before the event.Scull vs. Shishkin is the main event of a fight card promoted in cooperation between AGON Sports and Kuc Boxing, taking place atStadthalle in Falkensee, just outside of Berlin. The four-fight televised portion of the card will air live on DAZN in the territories beginning at 3 p.m. ET/Noon PT.

The main event pitsSalita Promotion’s top world title contender, Shishkin, against Scull, the undefeated Cuban-born boxer now living and training in Germany. The stakes are high as both men look to claim the IBF title belt recently vacated by Unified Super Middleweight World ChampionCanelo Alvarez.

“I am very happy that U.S. fight fans, and boxing fans around the world will have a chance to witness Saturday’s important world title fight,” said Dmitriy Salita, President of Salita Promotions. “The implications for the future of the division and that of each fighter are significant. Vladimir Shishkin has dreamt of this moment his entire career and he has prepared accordingly. I believe he is more than ready to step into the lion’s den in Berlin and win his first world title.”

The 33-year-old Shishkin is a SHOBOX alum with an impressive pro career that began in 2016. A bona fide knockout artist, Shishkin (16-0, 10 KOs) has defeated Sena Agbeko, DeAndre Ware, Jose Uzcategui and carries momentum into Saturday’s bout from back-to-back knockout wins over Raymon Ayala and Mike Guy. Shishkin is entering his first world title bout and faces the added pressure of winning on Scull’s home turf. The Russian born Shishkin trains in Florida with world-class trainer SugarHill Steward.

Scull (22-0, 9 KOs) has proven to be one of the more dangerous super middleweights in the world. Starting his professional career in 2016 as well, Scull most recently defeated New Orleans’ Sean Hemphill via unanimous decision in dominant fashion this past May. As a result, Scull was listed as the mandatory challenger for the then-reigning IBF Super Middleweight Champion, Canelo. Now facing his toughest test to date in Shishkin, Scull plans to make a statement to boxing fans around the world that he is the next generation’s 168-pound champion to beat.

Salita stated earlier, “Having worked with Shishkin for over six years, I have seen the undeniable progress he has made throughout his career as he continues to fight the biggest names in the sport. Rau hnub Saturday, October 19, both Shishkin and Scull have the chance to make their case to fight Canelo Alvarez and to begin to reshape a marquee division with a wealth of big-name talent.”

Mikaelian: ‘I Am the Smarter One’

Germany’s Noel Mikaelian believes he has what is takes November 10 in the Ali Trophy Cruiserweight Quarter-Final against Latvia’s Mairis Briedis at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, USA.

Tickets are available via TicketMaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.

“Boxing is a really tough sport and somehow you get addicted to it,” said 28-year-old Mikaelian (24-1, 10 KOs).

“If you are a boxer, you are a boxer for life. Boxing taught me that I am really disciplined; I got a dedication for the sport and I never give up.

Mikaelian is a former WBO Youth champion and WBO International Cruiserweight Champion, but his biggest test to date is only days away.

“The quarter-final against Briedisit is going to be a tough fight. He is the favorite, he is a really good fighter. He has a good school, the Soviet school, punching power. He is also a thinker in the ring, but I think I am the smarter one.

“I will do what is necessary to win. I fight after the model; hit and not get hit. That is boxing to me and how boxing should be.”

I’ve been giving a second chance,” said Briedis (24-1, 18 KOs) one of the stars of Season I of the World Boxing Super Series.

And the Latvian sports hero is undoubtedly a favorite to take home this season’s Ali Trophy in the 200 lb division.

“I want to use this second opportunity. I am going to use it, and let us see how far I get. Each one of us in the tournament is different. It’s a very big test for myself. Both physically and psychologically.”

Last year in October the former WBC World Champion was awarded as Commander of the Order of the Three Stars, the highest state award in Latvia, for ‘outstanding achievements in sports and significant contribution to the promotion of Latvia in the world.

“I want to show by my example that there is a need for Latvians, and not only Latvians, but for everyone in general to pull together. That people need to have fighting spirit,” said the 33-year-old.

“There are many things I have to work on myself, both physically and psychologically. I am not getting any younger, but I am going to do everything I can.

“Physically I feel good in myself. My physical indexes are good. Now, the most important thing, with God’s help, is to work hard with all my boxing techniques. I want to show what I am capable of in boxing and show what I am like.”

Mairis Briedis vs Noel Mikaelian and Krzysztof Glowacki vs Maksim Vlasov are the two Cruiserweight Quarter-Finals on an incredible doubleheader when the World Boxing Super Series comes to the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

Fans in the U.S. can watch the quarter-finals LIVE on DAZN, the global sports streaming platform. To sign up for a one-month free trial, fans can visit DAZN.com or download the DAZN app to their preferred connected device.

Several local prospects will highlight the exciting undercard.

Russia’s Umar Salamov to Face Germany’s Denis Liebau in Explosive Light Heavyweight Clash on September 5 in Grozny

On Wednesday, September 5, fearless Russian light heavyweight contender Umar Salamov (21-1, 16 KOs) will risk his IBF #11 and WBO #15 rankings when he takes on treacherous KO puncher Denis Liebau (23-2, 21 KOs) of Frankfurt Germany, for the WBO International Light Heavyweight Championship.

The explosive 10-round showdown will be held in the Amphitheater at the five-star Grozny City Hotel in Salamov’s hometown of Grozny, Zog ntawm Guj kuj, and televised live in Russia on Match TV.

Eager for a shot at the world championship, Salamov has lately been honing his craft at the world-famous Kronk Gym in Detroit, while issuing public challenges to dangerous world champions Eleider Alvarez (WBO) and Dmitry Bivol (WBA). He was last seen in the ring in June, winning the IBF North American Championship by scoring an impressive ninth-round knockout over Brian Howard, live on Showtime.

“I love training in Detroit,” said Salamov. “I am excited to be back in the ring fighting for the prestigious WBO International belt. I’ve already held this title and I feel it belongs to me. I am the best light heavyweight in the world and look forward to proving that point in an impressive way on September 5, in front of my hometown fans.

Already known for going right at every hard-punching opponent he faces, Salamov says he’s going to be even more relentless against Liebau.

“I will be looking for another knockout,” he said. “Working with Head Trainer Javan “Sugar” Hill Stewart and my co-trainer Rick Philips has taught me so many new things. I am in incredible shape and I feel like it is impossible to beat me right now.”

“Umar’s world-class experience, skills and now a world class training regimen make him one of the best light heavyweights in the world,” said Salamov’s co-promoter, Dmitriy Salita (along with Kazbek Aslambekov of KA-Promotions). “Umar is facing a real experienced challenger in Denis Liebau, but I know he is poised for an impressive victory. He wants to make a statement and put the names in the division on notice. I know that he will put his skill set on display and will be impressive September 5.”

Team USA’s newest boxing star Light heavyweight Khalil Coe

(L-R) – USA head coach Billy Walsh, USA National assistant coach Kay Koroma, Khalil Coe and coach Jeff Mays

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Lub Xya hli ntuj 9, 2018) – A star was born last month at the 45th Chemistry Cup in Halle, Germany, when American light heavyweight Khalil Coe shocked the amateur boxing world, stopping Cuban’s multiple world champion Julio Cesar La Cruz in the opening round of the championship final match.

Nearly 100 boxers represented 16 different countries at the Chemistry Cup, including, Zog ntawm Guj kuj, Ukraine, Ireland, India and host Germany, in addition to the United States and Cuba.

The 21-year-old Coe, who was boxing in only his 25th match, his first on the International scene, stole the show and he was named Most Outstanding Boxer of the tournament. In the semifinals, Coe knocked out Matus Strnisko, of Slovakia, in the first round.

VOTE FOR KHALIL COE

Khalil Coe is a candidate for the USOC Best Male Athlete of the Month for June. Voting ends this evening at https://awards.teamusa.org/

Coe respected but he wasn’t intimidated by his much more experienced opponent, 2016 Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion La Cruz, who had one less fight in the World Boxing Series than Cue did during his entire amateur career.

My first fight in the tournament was the hardest I’d had,” Coe explained. “I studied him (La Cruz) a lot and watched him fight in the semifinals (defeating three-time European champion Joseph Ward (Ireland), which was right after my semifinals fight. He (La Cruz) is very elusive and flashy, but he doesn’t like to get hit in the body. He moves his body, but he forgets about his head. I pulled him, on him, moving around with my footwork and shuffling. He threw a lazy jab and I hit him right on the chin with a right.

Coe’s short, compact right-hand punch landed right on the button, dropping La Cruz a little less than two-minutes into round one. The Cuban beat the count, but the referee ruled that he was unable to continue. La Cruz was stillThe Manin the light heavyweight division and by knocking him out, Coe proved that he truly belongs with the elite, and that the No. 1-rated American is the fighter to beat in terms of qualifying for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team.

I let everybody know that I’m here,” Coe added. “I still need to work on a lot of different things. I need to throw more combinations, keep by stamina up, and improve everything to be better. I’m more of a pure boxer, but I have strength and punching power. Coach (Billy)Walsh doesn’t change his fighters, he adds to what they have. The coaches put together a fight plan and I executed it.

Khalil’s performances in Germany were world class,” Team USA head coach Walsh said, “To be truly world class, we now have to repeat those performances regularly, and that’s where the challenge lies.

On this year’s USA vs. Ireland Northeast Tour, Coe was 2-0 against his Irish counterparts in Boston and Springfield

Coe often got into fights in school, until his mother sent him to a local gym, and his first amateur bout was when he was 12. If he wasn’t boxing right now, the 6′ 1″ Coe believes he would probably be playing college football, as a fullback or defensive end.

Close with his USA teammates, particularly Keyshawn Davis, Coe lives and trains with them in Colorado Springs. “We’re more than a team,” the Jersey City, New Jersey boxer concluded, “we’re like a familyguys, gals and coachesin Colorado Springs.

I’m going to turn pro after the Olympics, one way or the other, God-willing, after I win a gold medal.

Tokyo is legitimately in Khalil Coe’s sights!

FNU qhia tias txhua qhov kev ua si “FastEddie Chambers Interview

This week Tom, Tony and Rich catch up with Professional Boxer FastEddie Chambers. Unfortunately, a recording glitch left us without the first half of the broadcast tonight where we had a great discussion about what Chambers accomplished in his career so far. We did save the whole Eddie interview, though. Rich apologizes for the fourth co-host (Tom the Cat) for his constant interruptions in the early going. Be patient, though, folks. This is one of the best interviews we’ve conducted in a long time, and Eddie is a real class act. It is worth the listen and will probably be the first of many chats with Chambers we will likely have in the future.
