20-1 California super flyweight Rocco Santomauro signs with Ryan Roach’s Fighter Locker

BOSTON (February 23, 2021) – Ryan Roach’s Fighter Locker has announced it has signed California super flyweight Rocco “So Cal Kid” Santomauro (20-1, 6 KOs) to an exclusive managerial contract. 

The 33-year-old Santomauro, fighting out of Apple Valley, CA, is riding a 7-fight win streak since suffering his only loss as a professional to then 14-0 Diego De La Hoya nearly five years ago. 

“I’m 33,” Santomauro said, but I definitely feel I’m in my prime.  My skill level is at its best and I’m always improving. When it comes to getting in there with top guys, I’ve been in the ring with many world champions, outside of fights, and I’ve more than held my own.  It’s all a matter of timing and I feel mine is here.  I believe I’m very close to a major fight right now at super flyweight.  It’s all a matter of getting myself in the right position and I feel like, right now, I have the right team to do so with Ryan Roach and Fighter Locker backing me. 

“I signed a managerial contract with Ryan and his Fighter Locker because I knew it was a good move.  After managing myself the last year and a half, I knew I needed trustworthy help to get to the next level. Ryan and I were friends on social media. I was aware he was signing fighters with Fighter Locker, so I began to watch and study him to see how he was with his fighters.  Having liked what I saw – Ryan being there for his fighters and building a good relationship with him talking from time to time — we were able to come to an agreement to take me to that next level and get a major fight.” 

“I’m excited to add such a veteran fight to our stable,” Roach commented.  “Rocco checks all the boxes in terms of what a manager looks for in a fighter.  He has great ring IQ.  He’s fast with great defense, and Rocco a very energetic fighter.  He is close to a world title shot; one or two more fights and we will be fighting top super flyweights.  Rocco has what it takes to beat those guys.” 

The son of an Italian father who wanted his son to be an “animal,” Rocco was born with a fighting spirt, aggressive in nature as a child, and inspired by Rocky Marciano.  Rocco got into boxing, in large part, due to following in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a decorated amateur boxer.  He first boxed because of his brother, then through a local boxing club in Hesperia (CA), in addition to practicing at home as he watched his favorite fighters on ESPN Classic. 

Santomauro’s amateur career never really took off.  He lived in an area with very little boxing, and needed to travel to box, which resulted in him deciding when he was older to take control of his boxing career by moving to Las Vegas.  He developed his skills there and decided in 2009 to turn pro after suffering what he felt was a bad decision at the USA Nationals. 

An energetic boxer who is a smart, aggressive counter puncher, Santomauro also checks in on the body, and brings excitement into the ring.  His best fight to date was his most recent (Nov. 7, 2020), when he stopped Christian Omar Henriques (10-4-2) in the sixth round of their fight in Tijuana. 

“I was backed by Fighter Locker and my team,” Rocco noted.  “I went in focused and mentally trained properly to do what I had to do against a game, younger opponent with a winning record. I knocked him out! We did it intelligently and were able to hit all the marks performance-wise.” 

Training and fighting during a pandemic have been challenging, to say the least, and being a super flyweight only compounds the problem. 

“It’s been very difficult getting fights as an American super flyweight,” Santomauro added, “especially coming down in weight from featherweight and then junior featherweight.  Nobody was willing to give me the opportunity, nor did they think I could fight at that weight class having debuted as a junior lightweight.  I was basically put on the shelf, turned down left and right as a free agent with 14-1 record at that time.  I reached a 1 ½ year layoff, getting only lowball offers against short notice opponents.  My trainer, Julian Chua, and I decided it would be smart to start fighting in Mexico, where there were super flyweights to fight. 

“Training during the pandemic has been absolute hell for me, closed out of almost all gyms but grateful for being able to visit, from time to time, the Wild Card Boxing Gym and Churchill Boxing Club.  But that wasn’t what I was used to.  I had to do a lot of what I call ‘Rocky 4’ training on my own to stay fit.  I was also lucky enough to build good relationships in Mexico with my promoter, so I was blessed to always have the option of staying busy in Tijuana.  And I did.” 

Now, Roach and Fighter Locker have Santomauro’s back, and his future is promising.

2012 U.S. Olympian Diaz, fighting out of South El Monte, California, is the reigning North American Boxing Federation (NABF) and North American Boxing Organization (NABO) featherweight champion.   The slick southpaw is rated among the top 10 by all four major sanctioning bodies – WBO #1, WBC #2, IBF #4 and WBA #9 – as well as No. 7 by The Ring magazine. His Mexican opponent, Lara, is ranked No. 5 and 6, respectively, by the WBC and WBA, in addition to No. 9 by The Ring.
A pair of undefeated super middleweights, former IBF bantamweight world champion Randy “El Matador” Caballero (24-0, 14 KOs) and Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya (19-0, 9 KOs), will square off in the 10-round NABF super bantamweight title fight.
California-born Caballero, ranked No. 6 by the WBC, will defend his NABF crown against De La Hoya, the WBC Youth World Champion De La Hoya, and cousin of the event’s promoter, Hall-of-Famer Oscar De La Hoya. The young Mexican with the “golden” surname, De La Hoya, is also rated among the among the top 10 by all four major sanctioning organizations – WBC #4, IBF#6, WBO #7 and WBA #9 – in addition to being ranked No. 9 by The Ring.
In the opening PPV fight, undefeated Tennessee lightweight Ryan “Blue Chip” Martin (19-0, 11 KOs) defends his WBC Continental Americas title against a dangerous, upset-minded Mexican, Francisco “Paquito” Rojo (19-2, 12 KOs), in a scheduled 10-round fight. IBF #9 and WBO #14 Martin faces the stiffest test of his young professional career in WBC #8 Rojo, who earlier this year knocked out WBC No. 1 contender Dante Jordon in the fifth round.
Three undefeated prospects will be showcased in the three preliminary bouts that will be streamed live on Ringtv.com. Ukrainian welterweight Serhii “El Flaco” Bohachuk (4-0, 4 KOs) meets an opponent to soon be determined in a four-round bout, while Dallas super lightweight Vergil Ortiz (6-0, 6 KOs) meets Cesar Valenzuela (7-1, 2 KOs), of Phoenix, in a six-round match. 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Ezparza (2-0), fighting out of Houston, faces Aracely Palacios(8-7, 1 KO), of Mexico, in the streaming event opener.

Dallas, TX (September 12, 2016) – IBF #8 super bantamweight Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle and his team arrived in Dallas this afternoon after leaving Puerto Rico earlier today.
Del Valle, who hails from Bayamon, meets unbeaten Diego De La Hoya, 15-0 (9 KO’s), Saturday evening over ten rounds in what is expected to be a classic Puerto Rico vs Mexico slugfest. The bout opens an HBO PPV telecast starting at 9 PM ET headlined by the junior middleweight championship fight between pound for pound superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and reigning WBO champion Liam Smith. The card takes place a short distance from Dallas in Arlington, TX at AT&T Stadium, best known as the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Del Valle, 22-2 (16 KO’s), had grueling training camp to prepare for what he calls the biggest fight of his career. With his preparation in the books, Del Valle is supremely confident that the work he put in along with his significant experience advantage will guide him to victory.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico (September 6, 2016) – In less than two weeks, IBF #8 ranked super bantamweight Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle enters the ring against unbeaten and highly regarded Diego De La Hoya.

The bout opens the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez –Liam Smith HBO pay-per-view telecast Saturday, September 17 from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX and is scheduled for ten rounds. Del Valle, who fought on HBO and Showtime on multiple occasions, considers this bout the most important of his career as he’s facing a foe that is in a position he himself was once in.

Del Valle on bout with De La Hoya: “Expect fireworks”

Bayamon, PR (August 23, 2016) – Super bantamweight contender Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle is not one to waste time in the squared circle.

Currently the International Boxing Federation’s #8 ranked contender, Del Valle scored 16 of his 22 victories by knockout including nine within the first three rounds. Known for bringing the heat to his foes from the opening bell, Del Valle is accustom to partaking in exciting fights and most recently dropped hard-hitting Thomas Snow twice en route to a unanimous decision victory.

On September 17, Del Valle faces unbeaten and highly touted Diego De La Hoya in a ten round contest. The bout opens up the Saul Alvarez-Liam Smith pay per view telecast from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. It is also renewing boxing’s oldest rivalry as Del Valle represents Puerto Rico while De La Hoya fights out of Mexico. Los Angeles (Jan. 23) – Golden Boy Promotions held a press conference at the Golden Boy Building in Los Angeles yesterday, to announce the Feb. 27 IBF Bantamweight World Championship fight between the titleholder Randy “El Matador” Caballero and Alberto “Metro” Guevara. The event was hosted by Oscar De La Hoya, Founder and President of Golden Boy Promotions and was attended by more than 50 local and international media outlets. Seven-time world champion in four weight classes, Erik Morales and former WBC and IBF Super Bantamweight World Champion Isreal Vasquez were also in attendance.

 

Other fighters featured on the card participated in the press conference including Mexicali’s Diego De La Hoya (8-0, 6 KOs) who fights in his first eight-round bout as the co-main event against Los Angeles’ Manuel “Suavecito” Roman (17-3-3, 6 KOs).  Plus, Chinese heavyweight sensation Taishan (2-0, 2 KOs) spoke about his upcoming opening telecast bout on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes, a four-round fight against Roy McCary (3-2, 3 KOs). Also, newcomer Nick Arce (1-0, 1 KO) and the undefeated Oscar “Jaguar” Negrete (7-0, 3 KOs) discussed their upcoming fights, both against opponents yet to be announced.

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 16) – On February 27, Mexicali’s Diego De La Hoya (8-0, 6 KOs) makes his move up to fight in his first eight-round bout in the evening’s co-main event when he faces Los Angeles’ Manuel “Suavecito” Roman (17-3-3, 6 KOs) at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif.  Plus, Chinese heavyweight sensation Taishan (2-0, 2 KOs) opens up the FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes telecast in a four-round bout against Roy McCary (3-2, 3 KOs) of Houston. Also, newcomer Nick Arce (1-0, 1 KO) competes in his second professional match in a four-round super featherweight bout hoping to make airwaves and undefeated Oscar Negrete (7-0, 3 KOs) will compete in non-televised six-round bantamweight bout, both against opponents yet to be announced.

 

In the previously announced main event, IBF Bantamweight World Champion Randy “El Matador” Caballero (22-0, 13 KOs) will defend his title for the first time against Alberto “Metro” Guevara (19-2, 7 KOs) of Mazatlan, Mexico.

With boxing fans around the world waiting to see what he could do in the ring, 20-year-old Diego De La Hoya (8-0, 6 KOs) has yet to disappoint; impressing audiences from the time of his professional debut in 2013 with poise, power and exciting style.  In 2014, the Mexicali native put together six wins, four by knockout and after defeating the likes of Miguel Tamayo and Ali Gonzalez, he’s looking forward to stepping up even more this year as he begins competing in eight-round bouts.

 

Manuel Roman (17-3-3, 6 KOs) of Los Angeles is a tough fighter ready to prove to critics that he is mainstay in the sport.  A professional since 2004 the hard hitting veteran was a former sparring partner to WBC Super Bantamweight World Champion Leo Santa Cruz, and also fought Santa Cruz in a title defense bout on the undercard of Mayweather vs. Maidana II.  The last time Roman was seen at Fantasy Springs he went up against hometown favorite and current IBF Bantamweight World Champion Randy Caballero and is looking to return to the venue to take on the rising star Diego De La Hoya.

 

Seven-foot-tall heavyweight Taishan (2-0, 2 KOs) has garnered a lot of attention for being one of the most imposing fighters in his division.  His two professional bouts thus far have proven that there’s substance behind the hype as he’s knocked out both Alex Rozman and Tommy Washington Jr., getting fight fans even more excited for the 26-year-old Beijing native’s first fight of 2015 on February 27.

 

Roy McCary (3-2, 3 KOs) of Houston is a rising heavyweight boxer who has gone up against the hard hitting Mario Herendia and Eric Newell.  Looking to continue to build a reputation, the newcomer will face Taishan hoping for victory in February.

 

A member of the Westside Boxing Club in Los Angeles, 18-year-old lightweight Nick Arce (1-0, 1 KO) is a former amateur standout who entered the professional boxing world in style in November of 2014 with a fourth round knockout over Adalbert Valenzuela.  Now, he will attempt to make it two straight as he competes in one of the sport’s most competitive weight classes.

 

Undefeated bantamweight star, Oscar Negrete (7-0, 3 KOs), will make his third appearance at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino looking to continue his undefeated status.  A professional since 2013, the newcomer already has seven wins to his name, quickly climbing the ranks and becoming a feared fighter.  Most recently, Negrete faced Salvador Perez in a four-round bantamweight bout.  Negrete knocked down the Fresno based fighter in the second round for a technical knockout win.
