Having fought at the top level of numerous MMA entities, including UFC, Riggs will bring his 47 professional MMA wins into his first legal and sanctioned bare knuckle contest in the U.S. See below for what Riggs had to say about transitioning to this new discipline, what fans can expect to see in the ring and more:

 

 

 

Why did you decide to make the move to Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship?

 

 

 

“I’ve been destined to be a champion since I was a little kid. It took me a long time to grow up as both a man and a fighter. But I’ve finally put it all together, and my body is still right and working well. So, this is the time for me to make the switch to BKFC and hopefully go for a BKFC belt. I really enjoy bare knuckle fighting. I’ve fought in a lot of different disciplines and this is a great fit for me.

 

 

 

It’s also really cool to be a part of the organization that hosted the first legitimate and regulated bare knuckle fights in the U.S. in more than a hundred years. To participate in the revival of this ancient sport is an honor.”

 

 

 

Have you watched BKFC fights? If so, what was your impression of it?

 

 

 

“I didn’t get a chance to watch BKFC 1 or 2 live, but I went back and watched Kendall Grove’s fight, as well as Chris Lytle and Joey Beltran. I thought the production quality was great, and the fights themselves were compelling, especially the heavyweights. Those guys were banging away in there.”

 

 

 

What about your style or background do you think will translate well into bare knuckle competition?

 

 

 

“I was bred to be a fighter, regardless of the discipline. Bare knuckle fighting just forces me to use my superior striking. I can box really well. It’s something I’ve been doing for many years, so my stand-up game is excellent.”

 

 

 

What are some of the challenges of fighting in this new discipline?

 

 

 

“I think the two biggest concerns with bare knuckle are hurting my hands or getting cut easier and we’re obviously working on ways to avoid that.”

 

 

 

How does your training camp differ from an actual bare knuckle fight?

 

 

 

“The main thing that I’m focusing on in camp is working to strengthen my core. I also throw certain punches a little differently in training than if I were in a real fight. We’re also trying to be careful with body shots, like punches to the liver. But my conditioning is great and I’m pushing that harder and harder recently.”

 

 

 

What have people around you said about bare knuckle fighting making a return and you officially signing on with BKFC?

 

 

 

“For the average person, bare knuckle fighting might seem crazy. But if you step back and think about it, MMA used to seem like a crazy concept too back in the day. This is really just another form of two professional fighters in there competing against each other.”

 

 

 

What do you know about Brok Weaver and how do you expect the fight to unfold?

 

 

 

“I watched a few of Weaver’s recent fights. He looks like he throws fast punches and is a tough guy. My bottom line is that I never want to overlook anyone. I’ve made that mistake in the past and paid the price for it. But I definitely don’t think Weaver can beat me. We’re both professional fighters though, and we’ll see what happens on October 20.”

On June 2, 2018, Philadelphia-based Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) made combat sports history when it promoted the first legal, sanctioned and regulated bare knuckle event in the United States since 1889. “BKFC 1: The Beginning” took place in Cheyenne, Wyoming and featured 10 professional bouts, all under the auspices and control of the Wyoming Combative Sports Commission.

PHILADELPHIA (September 24, 2018) – Undefeated professional boxer Sam “The Hillbilly Hammer” Shewmaker will face veteran MMA fighter Arnold “AJ” Adams in the finals of the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) heavyweight tournament on Saturday, October 20 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi and live on pay-per-view.

 

 

 

The championship heavyweight bout will serve as the main event of “BKFC 3: The Takeover”, which will be broadcast across the United States and Canada, exclusively on pay-per-view through MultiVision Media, Inc., on all major television and streaming distribution outlets for $29.95.

 

 

 

“After their performances in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Shewmaker and Adams have shown that they are worthy of earning the first-ever BKFC heavyweight belt,” said BKFC Founder and President David Feldman. “I’m looking forward to an amazing fight, which I don’t expect to go the distance. Both fighters are coming for the knockout and to take this title in spectacular fashion.”

“I’m going to knock him out,” said Shewmaker. “I’m the better fighter and he’s going to find that out the second the bell rings for round one to start.”

 

 

 

“That heavyweight belt is coming back to Chicago with me,” said Adams. “I’m ready for whatever Shewmaker tries on October 20.”

 

 

 

BKFC 3 will also showcase the beginning of the men’s 135-pound lightweight tournament, with a champion expected to be crowned in 2019. All four quarterfinal-round fights, plus the tournament alternate bout, will be contested on October 20. The lightweight tournament field will include UFC and Bellator veteran Johnny Bedford against professional boxer Reggie Barnett Jr., both of whom are undefeated so far in BKFC competition.

 

 

 

Returning to BKFC action is undefeated bare knuckle fighting legend and Police Gazette Bare Knuckle Heavyweight Champion Bobby Gunn, as well as UFC and Bellator veteran Kendall Grove. Grove will face former University of Alabama linebacker Marcel Stamps, who is undefeated in both MMA and bare knuckle fighting.

 

 

 

Making his promotional debut at BKFC 3 will be Joe Riggs, who has a lengthy resume with the UFC and is the former WEC Middleweight Champion. Riggs will meet MMA veteran Brock Weaver. The card will also feature Christine Ferea versus Jennifer Tate in the first bare knuckle bout for both women.

This week on the FNU Combat Sports Show, Tom, Tony and Rich discuss a wide variety of topics. We start out with the ESPN/UFC broadcast rights deal for five years, 30 fight cards and $1.5 billion. We also discuss the infighting among boxing promoters lately with both Bob Arum and UK upstart Eddie Hearn scrambling to sign free agents while trying to fill slots for slated shows in the United States over the coming year. We go on to recap last week’s combat sports action, highlighting the Adonis Stevenson vs. Badou Jack majority draw and the Usman vs Maia 5-round snoozefest headlining last Saturday night’s UFC Fight Night card. We of course also preview this weekend’s boxing matches and the UFC and Bellator cards coming out of England. We even touch on the regulation of bareknuckle boxing and Bobby Gunn’s claim of no fatalities recorded in the sport. CHEYENNE, WY (May 25, 2018) – The full lineup of matchups are set for the inaugural Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) fight card that will feature 12 bouts Saturday, June 2 live on pay-per-view from Cheyenne Ice & Events Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

 

 

 

The first legal, regulated and sanctioned bare knuckle event in the United States since 1889, “BKFC: The Beginning,” will air throughout the United States and Canada on pay-per-view through MultiVision Media, Inc., on FITE-TV app and fite.tv on all major television and streaming distribution outlets for $29.99 in 4K. The event can be ordered at www.bareknuckle.tv/bkfc1.

 

 

 

The pay-per-view telecast will feature former boxing world champion Antonio Tarver providing color commentary.

 

 

 

Headlining the card is former UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco Rodriguez taking on Pennsylvania’s Lewis “The Beast” Rumsey in five rounds of heavyweight action, while Lineal Bare Knuckle Boxing Heavyweight World Champion Bobby Gunn battles Brazil’s Marcelo Tavares in a seven-round attraction.

 

 

 

A five-round women’s showdown between “Rowdy” Bec Rawlings and Alma Garcia will also be featured on the groundbreaking pay-per-view event. A former UFC fighter,  Rawlings recorded two wins in UFC among her seven professional MMA victories. The 29-year-old from Brisbane, Australia enters the ring looking to bring her signature aggressive style into bare knuckle boxing. She will take on Garcia, a professional boxer with seven fights under her belt and fighting out of Denver, Colorado.

 

 

 

Held under the auspices and control of the Wyoming Combative Sports Commission, headed by Chairman Bryan Pedersen, the card features only established professional fighters who have competed in boxing, MMA, kickboxing or Muay Thai.

 

 

 

BKFC heavyweight tournament action will feature Arizona’s Eric “The American Soldier” Prindle battling Missouri’s Sam Shewmaker, Las Vegas-native Maurice “The Gorilla” Jackson against Hawaii’s Dale Sopi and Chicago’s Arnold “Bomaye” Adams competing against California’s DJ “Da Protégé” Linderman in a series of five-round quarter final matchups.

 

 

 

Additional fights on the stacked night of bare knuckle boxing include Virginia’s Reggie Barnett versus Pennsylvania’s Travis Thompson in a five-round 135-pound fight, Texas-native Johnny “Brutal” Bedford in a 137-pound, five-round matchup against Wyoming’s Nick “Garfield” Mamalis and a 155-pound showdown between Phoenix’s Estevan “El Terrible” Payan and Washington’s Omar “Gallo Fino” Avelar scheduled for five rounds.

 

 

 

Rounding out the night of fights are a pair of 145-pound fights as San Diego’s Joey Beltran meets California’s Tony “Kryptonite” Lopez in a five-round bout and Winnipeg’s Desmond Johnson taking on New Mexico-native Austin Ward in a five-round affair,plus Canada’s Brandon Cheverfield against Indiana’s Jorge Gonzales in a five-round 165-pound attraction.

Former world champion Imamu Mayfield interested in tonight’s Jones – Gunn clash

Freehold , NJ (Feb. 17, 2017) – Former IBF World Cruiserwight word champion Imamu Mayfield has thrown his hat in the ring to face the winner of tonight’s Roy Jones, Jr. – Bobby Gunn WBF World Cruiserweight title bout that will shown LIVE on Pay-Per-View.

Mayfield of Freehold , New Jersey ended a eight-year hiatus in losing to then-undefeated heavyweight Dan Pasciolla, but came back to Knockout a game Anthony Caputo Smith in six-rounds on November 12th in Atlantic City.

Mayfield’s longtime friend/manager Vinny LaManna is adamant that that Mayfield will have the right style to beat Jones or Gunn.

“This is a fight we would love to have. Imamu is in great shape, and after his win over Caputo Smith, he has the confidence that he can beat any cruiserweight out there,” said LaManna. “Jones has beating lesser guys, and a win over either of them would catapult Imamau back into the rankings and then he can see his way back to the title. The fight would make sense as it would put two older guys together in a fight that would have meaning. I am rooting for Gunn tonight, Bobby is a gentleman. If Bobby can pull the victory off tonight, Mayfield vs Gunn would be a big draw in New Jersey because both guys live in the Garden State. The point being is simple, if Imamu can’t beat the likes of Roy Jones’s or Bobby Gunn than who can he beat?”

On Bobby Gunn as an opponent:
“The thing I stand for and respect and represent – I love a person who won’t quit, and [Bobby Gunn] won’t quit for nothing. He has 72 wins with 72 knockouts – bare-knuckle – you’re really a professional bully! You just beat people up for the hell of it… It’s what I love. People ask why I’m so motivated to fight Bobby Gunn – it’s because what I stand for in boxing, he is in bare-knuckle. I respect that.”
On the opportunity to be in the ring on Friday:
“We are getting an opportunity to share the ring, and entertain the people while we share the ring, and I am at-heart an entertainer. And this man is a killer. Because he’s more dangerous, he’s cagey, he’s a veteran. There’s nothing you can do to him he hasn’t seen.”
On his mental and physical condition coming into the fight:
“I’m coming here to fight my guts out. I’m in good shape. I’ve been training hard for this one for a long time – this man’s been in my head a long time. I go to sleep with Roy, and I wake up with Roy. He’s part of my family, we’re sick of talking about Roy. I can’t wait to see him Friday night and get it over with! I’m coming here to fight.”
On critics of the matchup:
“In a few days here, me and Roy are going to battle. We’re doing to prove a lot of critics wrong, a lot of doubters. When that bell rings, it’s only me and him in there. To be honest with you, critics mean zero. Their opinions mean nothing… [Roy Jones Jr.] said he’d come and fight me, and he’s here. He has the heart of the lion. But we’re going to get it down. Wilmington, DE (February 14, 2017)-This Friday night, two members who fight under the King’s Promotions banner will be in action as Dagoberto Aguero takes on Olimjohn Nazarov in a super bantamweight bout scheduled for eight-rounds, while junior lightweight Frank De Alba takes on German Meraz in a bout scheduled for eight-rounds.
In the main event the legendary Roy Jones, Jr. takes on Bare Knuckle legend Bobby Gunn for the WBF Cruiserweight title LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW at the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware.
Aguero, 23 years-old of San Cristobal, Domincan Republic will be looking to make a big impression in his United States debut when he takes on the battle tested Nazarov.
“I want to thank David Feldman Promotions, King’s Promotions. Nelsons Promotions, and Raynelo Management are giving me an opportunity of a lifetime to show my skills in the ring,” said Aguero.  “I come from nothing in the Dominican Republic, and I managed to get out alive and now I have to take advantage of opportunities like this. I’m on the card with Ring Legend Roy Jones Jr. in my first debut in the US, this is a dream come true. “
Aguero is coming off a 1st round stoppage over Juan Miguel Garcia on June 24th.
Nazarov of Tashkent, Uzbekastan has a record of 14-4 with 8 knockouts,  will already be making his 2nd start of 2017.  On January 20th, he was in a tough battle with world ranked bantamweight Stephon Young before dropping an 8-round unanimous decision in Atlantic City

De Alba of Reading, PA has a record 20-2-2 with 9 knockouts has won 3 in a row since dropping a hotly contested majority decision to then-undefeated Omar Douglas on December 29, 2015 in Bethlehem, PA.

He has rebounded nicely with wins over Daniel Perales, Jonathan Perez, and an explosive 2nd round stoppage over Kiun Evans on September 9, 2016 in Reading, PA.
“My training has been good.  I have been waiting to get back in there after 5 months,”said De Alba.
“I know Meraz is a Mexican, and I expect him to come forward, and it will be a great war.”
De Alba is very excited about the opportunity to fight on a high profile card that will be headlined by Roy Jones, Jr.
“I am very much looking forward to fight on this card that will be headlined by Roy Jones, Jr.  He is a legend, and to share the same ring as him is a great honor.”
The Douglas fight was a good experience for De Alba, and his performance in his subsequent bouts has shown that he has learned and raised his game from that contest.
“After the Douglas loss, that fight made me aware of my talent.  I could have won that fight.  I learned that I have the talent and now the experience that will pave the way in my career.  But first things first.  I am just ready to get back in the ring on Friday and perform in Wilmington, and hopefully make some new fans for Team De Alba.”
Meraz of Agua Prieta, Mexico has fought a staggering 97 times in 12 years.  At just 30 years-old Meraz has posted a record of 55-41-1 with 32 knockouts.

Meraz has fought 5 world champions.

In his last bout, Meraz lost a 6-round unanimous decision to Hairon Socarras on February 3rd in Philadelphia.
In 6-round bouts:
Samuel Teah (9-1-1, 3 KO’s) takes on Daniel Parales (10-7-1, 5 KO’s) of Monterrey, Mexico in a super lightweight bout.
In 4-round bouts:

Wilmington, DE (February 13, 2017)-World rated junior middleweight Kanat Islam is looking for a big outing this Friday night when he takes on Robson Assis (16-3, 9 KO’s) on theRoy Jones, Jr. – Bobby Gunn WBF Cruiserweight title Pay-Per-View co-featured bout at the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Islam – Assis bout is scheduled for 10-rounds.
Islam (22-0, 18 KO’s) has been training in his adopted home of Pahoke, Florida by way of Kazakhstan, is ready for whatever Assis will bring to the ring.
“Training has been great.  I know Assis is a southpaw, and he likes to box.  That’s about it!  Between all my amateur experience and pro bouts all over the world, I am ready for anything,”said Islam.
Before taking this fight, Islam was mentioned as possible opponent for WBO junior middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, before the Mexican superstar took a bout with Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.  This would be a fight that the 32 year-old Islam would relish.
“My people in Kazakhstan would love to see this fight.  My team wants to see it, and I want to be in that fight.  If that opportunity comes, I will focus and get the right sparring, and be ready for that opportunity.”
But before any of that can happen, Islam must 1st get past Assis on a card headlined by the legendary Roy Jones, Jr.  This is an opportunity, that Islam isn’t taking lightly.
“Roy Jones, Jr. is a legend, and a big name in boxing.  In the past and still today he is big.  It is an honor to fight on a card that he is in the main event.”
Back home in Kazakhstan, Islam is getting close to legendary status himself, as onOctober 29th, he defeated Patrick Allotey in front of 18,000 fans in his homeland to capture the WBO Inter-Continental title and retain his WBA Fedlatin Super Welterweight titles.
“Fighting in front of my home people means more to me than anything.  It shows them that I represent their culture and they like to see my fighting style.  It was a dream come true to fight in front of so many of my people.  They were cheering my name, and for that I am thankful for them.”

Wilmington, DE (February 8, 2017)–Bare Knuckle Boxing Legend Bobby Gunn is ready for his opportunity of a lifetime, when he takes on all-time great Roy Jones, Jr in a bout scheduled for 12 rounds for the WBF Cruiserweight title that will take place on Fridaynight, February 17th at The Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware.  The bout can be seen LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW.
Gunn of Hackensack, New Jersey has been preparing for this fight, and is ready for the biggest fight of his career.  “
I am fighting an all-time great, and styles make fights.  It will be a hell of a fight,” said Gunn.
Gunn wanted to raise the stakes for the fight, but he doesn’t think that Jones has the confidence that he will come out victorious.
“I laid it out to him for a winner-take-all bout.  I am a puncher, so I know I will win this fight.”
This will be Gunn’s 1st bout in 38 months, but the Bare-Knuckle Legend has been active fighting on the Bare-Knuckle circuit, and has a perfect record of 72-0 with 72 knockouts in those bouts.
“People can look, and think that I haven’t been active, but a fight is a fight and I have been fighting the Bare-Knuckle fights.  Fighting is Fighting.  The only difference in those fights is that the gloves protect the hands.  Despite what it says on my boxing record, I have always been active.  But the time out of the ring plus being against Roy Jones, Jr, the fans will see a different Bobby Gunn.”
Gunn, usually a mild-mannered fighter, has also been motivated by some “Trash-Talk”from Jones.
“He said that I don’t deserve to be in the same ring as him.  I was already motivated for this, and he will find out otherwise on February 17th.  After February 17th, he will remember me for the rest of his life.  I am not coming to dance.  I am coming to fight, and early on, Roy will know that he has a fight on his hands.”
