Bangor, Maine (August 6, 2017) –There was no place like homeRāhoroinight for C.J. Tiaka, Ryan Sanders and Fred Lear of Young’s MMA in Bangor.
Fighting in front of a sold-out ballroom a stone’s throw from their training headquarters, the three fighters atop the card at “NEF 30” Rumble in Bangor” all posted impressive victories at Cross Insurance Center.
Ewer defeated Mike “The Mustache” Hansen by submission at1:46of the first round to capture the vacant NEF pro middleweight title. Lear landed the NEF amateur bantamweight belt, while Sanders tightened his grip on New England’s pro lightweight scene in a non-title triumph.
It was the second consecutive August sellout in the Queen City, a tradition that began with “NEF Presents Dana White: Lookin’ For a Fight” last summer.
After his hard-fought win over the much-traveled Jay Ellis, NEF pro lightweight champion Sanders, runga No. 1 i roto i te rohe o, kept his comments short and sweet while calling out the aforementioned Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) peresideni.
“You took the wrong guy last year,” Sanders said. “Come get me now.”
Sanders (15-8) didn’t have an easy road against Ellis, a veteran of more than 80 pro bouts. Ellis had Sanders under control for most of the fight but left himself vulnerable to a triangle choke at2:34 o te a tawhio tuatahi.
Ewer dispatched Hansen with a similarly swift maneuver.
“It’s a great feeling to win it in front of the home crowd,” Ewer said. “As hard as we worked (in training camp), I didn’t think anything could stop me.”
The sudden ending spoiled Hansen’s hopes of winning a title for the first time in his 13-year mixed martial arts career.
“This was by far the best training camp I ever had. We were just getting warmed up,” Hansen said. “I had a lot more to give, and I’m sure C.J. had a lot of more to give. But hey, we could do it again.”
Lear highlighted the amateur portion of the card with an authoritative second-round knockout of Walt Shea.
Only the bell saved Shea from Lear’s onslaught at the end of the opening chapter. Lear gained the advantage with a kick to the head midway through that round. After nearly locking in an arm bar that could have ended the fight, Lear bloodied the previously unbeaten Shea with a series of strikes.
The end appeared inevitable when Shea needed Lear’s help to find his corner between rounds, and another interrupted attack hastened the finish only 14 hēkona i muri mai.
An emotional Lear lauded his coach, Chris Young of Young’s MMA, before fastening the belt around the teacher’s waist.
“A lot of people around here know his name, but they don’t know the man,” Lear said. “He’s the first guy in the gym in the morning and the last one to leave at night. He’s the reason we’re all here. He’s the reason we’re successful. He’s the reason some of us aren’t in jail.”
In the first two fights of Josh Jones’ amateur MMA career, Jones dispatched his opponents by one-punch knockout in a total of 24 hēkona. It took Carlton Charles one fewer tick of the clock to take out Jones in the stunning conclusion to a touted tangle of former star collegiate athletes.
Charles, a product of the University of Maine football program taking his initial walk to the NEF cage, turned the tables on Jones (2-1) in a middleweight scrap. Jones again went for the early stoppage with a pair of looping shots, but Charles calmly ducked them before landing one of his own and taking the issue to the mat.
“I just love the competition,” Charles said. “You don’t get hit in the face like this on the football field.”
When the combatants regained their feet, Charles backed Jones against the cage and landed two right hands to the jaw. Jones dropped to one knee and absorbed a sharp left to the head. That persuaded the referee to step in and stop the fight, a verdict that left Jones and his First Class MMA camp visibly puzzled.
It was Charles’ second one-sided combat sports victory in a week’s time. He previously delivered a first-round TKO in the amateur boxing ring. Jones suffered his first defeat since making the transition from basketball, which he played professionally in Europe after starring at Bangor’s Husson University.
One look atRāmere oofficial weigh-in suggested that the bout between Roger Ewer (251 pauna) and Dustin Freeman (220) might be the typical stand-up, slug-it-out heavyweight affair. Engari, it turned into a ground-and-pound showcase that was right in Ewer’s wheelhouse. C.J.’s older brother, making his debut in the NEF hexagon at 44 tau o te ao, hammered out the advantage throughout and earned a TKO via unanswered strikes at2:31of the second stanza.
Nate Boucher improved to 2-0 with a first-round stoppage of Jeremiah Barkac, who was making his cage debut. Barkac gained an early advantage in the bantamweight bout with a barrage of strikes, but Boucher cleverly gained leverage with his legs and locked in a triangle choke.
Riro ngaro ranei, Bangor’s Angela Young announced that her battle with Jessica “The Black Widow” Borga would be the final fight of her career. Borga (6-3) erased any hopes of a Hollywood ending with a decisive TKO at2:16 o te kohao a huri noa. Young (2-3), wife of Chris, had never gone less than the distance in any of her prior wins or losses.
In a mutual NEF and MMA debut, Zach Faulkner delighted his home crowd with a second-round victory over David Hart via rear naked choke. Haere mai te mutunga i 1:42.
Jesse Hutchinson also enjoyed a triumphant debut in the amateur ranks. He stopped Anthony LaPointe at2:43of the first round in a welterweight skirmish.
NEF also announced that the promotion’s next mixed-martial-arts event, “Nef 31: The Old Port,” will see the company make its long-awaited debut in Portland, Maine at the brand new, state-of-the-art venue Aura. The event is scheduled to take place onRāmere, Whiringa 3, 2017. Tickets will go on sale this Wednesday, August 9 i www.auramaine.com.

Ewer had a highlight-reel knockout over Ruben Redman (0-1) in his last bout at the Cross – exactly one year to the day he will meet Hansen.
The co-main event of the evening will see Ewer’s Young’s teammate, undefeated Bangor prospect Arona Lacey (4-0) take on Bellator veteranBryan Goldsby(17-16). Goldsby will represent Lacey’s most-seasoned challenge to date. Lacey has been nothing short of “He whakangungu” – his nickname – mai tahuri pro. He has submitted three of his four opponents in the first round. Only John Santos (3-5) was able to survive three full rounds with Lacey last summer in Bangor. Lacey won that fight via split decision in a rugged, back-and-forth, “fight of the night” performance.
Rounding out the pro card will be another Young’s cornerstone, “Te” Ryan Sanders (14-8), who will meet Milwaukee, Wisconsin veteranJay Ellis(14-68) i roto i te whakataetae Welterweight. Sanders is the reigning NEF MMA Pro Lightweight Champion, having defeated Jon Lemke (6-8) in a tournament final last April to claim the title. The bout with Ellis will be a non-title affair. Headlining the amateur portion of the fight card will be an NEF MMA Amateur Bantamweight Title fight. Fred Lear (5-2) of Bangor will do battle with Jefferson, Maine o Walt Shea(2-0) for the vacant 135-pound championship. Lear and Shea will continue a competitive rivalry that has developed in the amateur ranks in recent years between Lear’s camp Young’s MMA and Shea’s team of First Class MMA based in Brunswick, Maine.
Opening the night will be a women’s fight betweenAngela Young (2-2), wife of Young’s MMA founder and head coach Chris Young, and Florida’sJessica “The Black Widow” Borga(5-2). The scrap is expected to be an exciting one. Young, a Registered Nurse at Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC), has put on several “fight of the night” performances that have sent audiences into a frenzy. Borga will make her third trip to Maine in the past year to compete in the NEF cage.

The wife of Young’s MMA founder Chris Young, he whaea, and a full-time nurse, she has brought the heat in all four of her previous contests for NEF, earning several “Whawhai o te Po” honors. Young had the crowd on the edge of its seat for her thrilling encounter with Christine Brothwell earlier this year – a fight she won via unanimous decision. She has never backed down, even when on the losing end of a slugfest like the one she had with Kylie O’Hearn on Cape Cod last year, and it has made her one of the most popular fighters with the NEF audience. Based on their styles, Young predicts yet another strike-fest full of fireworks when she meets Borga onAugust 5th.

She made her NEF debut last September and quickly became a favorite of Pine Tree State fight fans. Last November, Borga put on a dominant performance in Lewiston, winning a unanimous decision over black belt Brianne Genschel. She has captured multiple regional titles in the southeast portion of the country. Borga looks forward to returning to fight in front of her Maine fans once again.
“I can’t wait to be back at NEF for 2017,” exclaimed Borga when reached for comment. “I’ve been waiting to come back and show what I’ve learned. I appreciate Angela Young stepping up to put on a show for everyone. I’ll be ready and can’t wait to show my improvements.”

The fight card is scheduled to feature three professional boxing matches, six professional MMA bouts, and twelve exciting amateur MMA contests.
On the professional boxing side of the card, Northeast Junior Welterweight Champion, and the pride of West Forks, Maine, Brandon “Ko te Cannon” Berry(11-1, 7 Koó) returns to the ring for a six-rounder with Detroit, Michigan’sJames Lester (10-9, 4 Koó). Berry, one of the most popular boxers to ever come out of Maine, will look for his fourth consecutive victory since returning from a shoulder injury last year.
That will prove easier said than done with Lester standing in the opposite corner. Lester is a product of the world-famous Kronk Gym in Detroit where world champions like Thomas “Hitman” Hearns (61-5-1, 48 Koó), Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 Koó), Lennox Lewis (41-2-1, 32 Koó) and Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 Koó) have trained under the late Emmanuel Steward. Lester was ranked number-two nationally as an amateur. He presents a dangerous threat to Berry, one that could very well play the role of “kaipahua” ki “Ko te Cannon” and his legion of fans.
After a bloody war of a professional boxing debut at “NEF 21” whakamutunga marama, NEF MMA regularCrowsneck Boutin (0-0-1) will once again step into the boxing ring, this time facingBrandon Montella (3-0, 2 Koó). “I try to focus on what is right in front of me,” said Erickson during a recent interview onThe MMA Report Podcast. “I never looked past my opponents but I like to think what the reward is going to be when I beat this guy.”
Neither athlete can afford to overlook the other, but a win for either could very well mean a call from one of the national promotions. Erickson has been there before with Bellator. Powell is an all-around talent with some slick finishes to his credit.
“This is the type of MMA fight we absolutely love,” said NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “You have two guys who match up so well. They’ve both been racking up the wins. They’ve faced some of the same opponents. They’re both solid on the mat and on their feet. I expect this to be yet another crazy, wild NEF MMA main event!”
“Crazy” a “wild” do not even begin to describe the grudge that has developed betweenJosh “Hook On” Harvey(0-0) a Matt “Ken Doll” Denning (2-1). The bitter rivals will meet at a fight weight of 150-pounds at “NEF 22” in an MMA bout. The bout will be Harvey’s professional debut after a stellar 5-1 amateur career that saw him capture the NEF MMA Amateur Lightweight Title, as well as the northeast regions number-one ranking. The well-publicized personal issues between Harvey and Denning will be settled in the cage onApril 23rd.
The professional portion of the MMA card will also feature the pro debut of Harvey’s Young’s MMA teammateArona “He whakangungu” Lacey (0-0) as he takes on veteran“Shatterproof 2.0” Derek Shorey (3-5) i roto i te a'ee mā. Lacey vacated the NEF MMA Amateur Featherweight Title in order to turn professional.
That title will not stay vacant very long asKarepe Hall (6-3) a Erik Nelson(2-2) face off to determine a new champion at the top of the amateur MMA card. Hall is coming off a first-round submission win at “NEF XX” hinga whakamutunga, while Nelson recently picked up a unanimous decision victory at “NEF 21.”
The amateur MMA card will also feature a women’s fight betweenAngela Young(0-1) a “Hollywood” Hana Sparrell (1-0). Young and Sparrell made their respective debuts last year at “NEF XIX.”

Hannah Sparrell was introduced to the sport when she began taking her daughter to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes. Sparrell soon found herself training at John Raio’s First Class MMA in Brunswick, Maine. She made her in-cage debut last fall against Young’s teammate Kira Innocenti (0-1) i “NEF XIX” i roto i te Lewiston. “I’m excited to be entering the NEF cage again, i runga i April 23rd, against Angela Young,” said Sparrell. “Angela, coming from the school recently named New England’s ‘team of the year,’ has proven to be a heavy hitter, as we saw in her blood-shedding battle at ‘NEF XIX.’ E te mea, First Class has been putting its name on the map, displaying our skilled training, coaches and leadership, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about going head-to-head against Young’s MMA once again. I learned a lot from the experience from my last fight and have used it as a catalyst in my focused training this winter. I will be entering the NEFXXII cage confidently and ready for a good solid fight.”
Angela Young is the wife of Young’s MMA founder and head coach Chris Young. Like Sparrell, Young made her debut in the NEF cage last fall at “NEF XIX.” In a wild, “fight of the night” performance, Young battled back and forth with Rachel Reinheimer (2-0) of Team Sityodtong. Reinheimer would win the decision on the judges’ scorecards, but Young would win the respect of the entire New England MMA community with her valiant effort. I April 23rd, Young vows to chalk up the first win on her record.
“I am beyond ecstatic for the opportunity to fight for NEF again,” kī Young. “Especially against an opponent as respectful and professional as Hannah. I’ve put the work in, I’ve improved my game and I’m aiming for another ‘fight of the night.’ Tenei wā, Heoi, my hand will be raised.”

Mō New Ingarangi whawhai
New Ingarangi whawhai ("Nef") Ko te whawhai whakatairanga ngā kaupapa kamupene. Whānui wheako i roto i te whakahaere hākinakina whawhai he kapa whakahaere o nef, production ngā kaupapa, whanaungatanga pāpāho, marketing, ture me te pānuitanga.
Kira Innocenti (l) a Angela Young (r), angalelei whakaahua o Tracey McCue
Lewiston, Maine (August 31, 2015) - New Ingarangi whawhai (Nef), Tau-kotahi whakatairanga whawhai rohe Amerika o, Ka mau i ona tekau ma iwa whakauru-hōia-toi (MMA) takahanga, “NEF XIX,” i runga i Rāhoroi, Mahuru 12, 2015 i te Androscoggin Bank Colisée i Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature two amateur women’s bouts.
Ko Angela Young te wahine o Chris Young – owner and founder of Young’s MMA. She views her debut fight as a way of testing herself.
“It’s important for me to test myself,” ka mea Young, “e kore anake i roto i te whare herehere maiMahuru 12, but also through the fight that’s happened the last eight weeks leading up to the NEF event. I feel the fight is essentially a showcase and representation of the grueling training sessions and endless hours in the gym that took place prior to fight night. Living the MMA lifestyle to me meant more than diet modifications and strict training schedules.
One has to look only to the highest level of the sport to see this trend. Women’s fights are now routinely present on the main cards of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The promotion’s top star, me ona kaipara rawa utua, Ko o ona wahine whā toa Ronda Rousey (12-0). The women competing on the September 12 ka hei kāri i te aronga o te kaupapa ki te whakawhānui i ngā whai wāhitanga mō wahine i te taumata-rohe.
“E kore he tino rerekē atu i te mea mo te tangata MMA mō wahine,” kī Young. “Oia mau, MMA Ko te hākinakina nuinga tane, but successful women in the MMA world are on the rise. Na roto i tenei puni whawhai ua uiui e ahau, sparred a nonoke ana raua kapa whawhai a te Feia Apî MMA me kua ratou unrelentingly tautoko. Te riroraa tetahi te whawhai wahine tuatahi o roto o Young o tino nei ona tenge (me te mali ki Mr. Young) but it’s also a spotlight I’m hoping will inspire other women who otherwise wouldn’t have pursued MMA. I would bet the women’s fights on September 12th won’t be unlike the others we’ve seen at prior NEF events.
“Ko Women o MMA i runga i te ara,” Said Innocenti. “Haapii ia ako te wahine te tahi mea e kore ia e mohio e pā ana ia. Kua kite ahau i hanga reira te ti'aturiraa i roto i ahau, me te tini ke atu. Ko te atu wahine i runga i nga whariki, the better. Fans can expect my teammate, Angie, a ki ahau hoatu te reira i to tatou katoa, me te haere ki te whawhai kia rite ki noa te toa tane i MMA o Young e rave. Kua mahi matou pakeke ki te tohu i to tatou omaoma. Ka whawhai matou ki te whakakake, weriweri, a ki te koki kaha titiro atu hoki ia tatou. Ka taea e ahau haapapû atu ia outou e, e pāngia te wahine a fakangalongata'a.”
“Women o MMA he tika rite he hākinakina tetahi atu,” kī Reinheimer o Everett, Massachusetts. “Ehara i te he kiriata mahi i reira rere te hero ki te ngahere ki te toru nga ra te whakangungu ki te ariki toi hōia, me te ka patu te ope katoa. Ehara i te he whawhai pae. Ehara i te he pehipehi kūiti hoki. Enei wahine he kaitäkaro nui nei whakangungu ata mo tau mā te whakamahi i te whakangungu pai, taputapu me ngā rauemi e wātea ana. Women nei whakataetae i roto i te hākinakina whawhai fakamoleki mano o haora o te toto, werawera me te roimata te tino ratou hākinakina. Hanga ana e ratou patunga tapu. I tua atu, reira ture me ngā tepe wā me whakatūpatotanga haumaru e. A, no te tangata he tauhou ki te whakaaro o MMA o te wahine, Whakarite e ahau ki te mekemeke taiapa ranei, something else that people are more familiar with. The pool of women fighters in New England is deepening fast and the fact that there are more women’s bouts on fight cards reflects that. Toku hoariri, me te ahau he i nui e rua, puni pukumahi. He whaea e rua matou, a e te reira te rota o te faaotiraa, me te puku ki te mahi i tēnei hākinakina i te hunga maminga, mahi me ngā tamariki. Kua mahi ahau i kaha ki taku rōpū mai i toku whawhai whakamutunga ki te whakapai ake i toku kēmu i roto i nga āhuatanga. Na mauruuru no te whakangungu mīharo me hoa tākaro i Sityodtong e pana ahau kia pakeke ahau. I te Mahuru 12, Ka taea e koe e mahara he whawhai.”
Te nuinga o te taata, e rua nga tangata me nga wahine, who join MMA gyms do not do so initially intending to become an active cage fighter. On any given day, one can walk into any MMA gym and find a diverse population of trainees. Men and women, tawhito, e te taitamariki, kara puru, me te kara ma, all train side by side. Most will never step foot in a cage in front of thousands of screaming fans. Most are there to get in shape or learn self-defense. Some, Heoi, E ngaua e te bug whakataetae.
“I whakaurua e ahau ki te ao MMA i muri i te hainatanga taku tamahine ki he ngaahi kalasi Jiu Jitsu te whakaaro 'e' aonga ki a ia mo whai wāhi i roto i te hākinakina te āhuatanga korero whaiaro,” haamana'o Hanna Sparrell. “I ahau i tiaki rite hinga ia i roto i te aroha ki te kēmu, whiwhi kaha me te māia, and was quick to decide that it was something I needed to be doing too. It didn’t take long before I fell in love with Jiu Jitsu myself, a ka mutunga hiahia ki te tūhura i te tahi atu mau tuhaa o te ao MMA. Te riroraa i roto i te omaoma hei kua he whare tuarua mo ahau me taku tamahine, oku hoa whakangungu, a second family. Every day I walk through the doors of the gym is a test, te reira i te tamataraa o te tākaro, me te pai, hei whakamatautau ano i te puku hinengaro, ā-whatumanawa. Mai i whakaurua ki te ao toi hōia whakauru kua hoatu e ahau toku tinana, ngakau, me te wairua ki te whakangungu, a whakataetae i roto i tenei a'ee he nui ki ahau mo te maha ngā take, e kore anake ki te tohu ahau me toku mahi pakeke, engari ki te hoki tohu katoa te mahi pakeke, fakatapui, me te faaitoitoraa i riro mai i ahau i oku hoa, e tohutohu ana, hoa whakangungu, and fellow fighters along the way. I think MMA training for woman is a great outlet for many reasons, te reira i te pae tino ko te īngoa nui, a ka he ano hoki he ahua pai o "therapy" i te mutunga o te ra pea taumaha. I ahau he tini nga wahine whakangungu ahau ki, e kore e whakamahere i katoa o ratou i runga i whawhai, engari nga painga o te hākinakina e tonu i reira, a ka aroha ratou i te reira noa te taua.”
Innocenti, rite maha, ka whai wāhi i roto i te hākinakina whawhai rite te ara ki te tiki i roto i, a noho i roto i, shape. Little did she know when her journey started some two years ago that it would take her into an MMA cage with thousands watching her compete.
I like exceeding expectations and pushing my limits and that’s MMA in a nutshell. Since I started training in martial arts, hei toku ora, kua rohe-iti. Kua pai ake toku ora toku ora i runga i te whāriki atu te whāriki me te hurihia. Ngā huia te reira atu i te mau faaoaoaraa faufaa katoa me maturuturu iho ana aku ora ki raro, ki te mea faufaa tino, i roto i a roto o te whakakai. Ite e ahau kia rite ki ngā tauturu te reira riro ahau nui ofi ki toku whaiaro tūturu. Ko te te pai o toi hōia tahito, me te ora hou.”
O nga wahine e wha whawhai i runga i te “NEF XIX” kāri, only Reinheimer has actively competed in the past. She dominated her opponent this past spring on her way to a unanimous decision victory in her debut. All of the women fighting on September 12 i roto i te Lewiston e oaoa no te rave'a.
“NEF Ko te whakatairanga totoka ki te ingoa nui,” Na ka mea a Reinheimer. “I was a spectator at their very first fight card back in 2012. I love Maine and the crowd is awesome there. E kore e taea e ahau tatari!”
