Dmitriy Salita – President of Salita Promotions

“It’s an honor to promote this year’s International Boxing Hall of Fame event—a card that truly reflects the full spectrum of the sport, featuring champions, top contenders, rising prospects, and future Hall of Famers like Franchón Crews, a true pioneer in women’s boxing.”

“I grew up in this sport. Boxing isn’t just my profession it’s my passion. I approach every event and matchup with the enthusiasm of a fan and the passion of a boxer. Having been a fighter signed to some of the biggest promotions and now working as a promoter for over a decade, I’ve gained a unique perspective. I believe that experience, paired with a deep love for the game, gives me the tools to help elevate the sport in new and meaningful ways.”

“We’re in the midst of an exciting transition in boxing, and innovation is key. That’s why we’re trying new things—like partnering with ALL THE SMOKE—to bring fans closer to the stories, personalities, and journeys that define boxing. Our vision is to be inclusive, collaborative, and to grow the sport for the fans and give the best of opportunities to the fighters we promote.”

Brandon Moore – USBA American heavyweight titlist

“This is a humongous opportunity. I’ve been training for this since February. Not that I knew this was coming but I knew an opportunity of any kind would show up. I know this event is going to be big time and there will be lots of legends there, so I am planning on looking sharp and ready to go against Stanley Wright. He just had an upset win against Jeremiah Milton, so I am taking him extremely seriously. Wright is an undefeated fighter, so I need to give him his first L.”

“I’m a bigger sized heavyweight myself, and I’ve fought bigger heavyweights before. Wright will just be another guy in the totem pole. I just need to move my feet, hit him with that jab, and look good doing it. He’s coming to hit hard so I know what he’s coming to do. I just need to stay focused, keep my chin down, and keep hitting him with that jab.”

“June 6 I’m coming in extremely sharp. Of course I want the knockout, I want it badly. But it’s about being sharp and getting the win. I always want the knockout, but the main focus is staying smart. If I do that, the knockouts will come. They always come.”

Franchón Crews-Dezurn – WBC and WBA Unified Super Middleweight World Champion

“I’m from the bottom so I’m not a stranger to hard work and working for what I want. An opportunity came to work with Salita Promotions, and it made sense. Ut cernis, women’s boxing is coming to the forefront and there are now a lot of women getting great opportunities. Myself as a pioneer, of course I wanted to get into that mix. Salita just signed two more middleweights so there are no shortage of fights for me here.”

“Boxing is my stage. My first love before boxing was music. The way the universe had it, boxing became my stage and platform. But it all works together. I’m a creator. I express myself through music, pugilatu, and fashion. When I made my professional debut against Claressa Shields, I walked out to my original music and my original outfit.”

“Boxing is life. I take it very seriously because I’m old school. I’m old enough to know, young enough to learn. I don’t play because you can lose your life in boxing. I’m pushing through a lot of things to make the most out of this opportunity.”

Joshua James Pagan – Undefeated lightweight prospect

“There are a lot of great fighters out there in or around my division. There are a few fighters that are on my radar, including Giovanni Marquez. He’s very talented, tough and durable. Floyd Schofield is another fighter I have on my radar. I want to fight them all.”

“It’s a blessing to be fighting on this card. I grew up watching Manny Pacquiao and Michael Nunn. There are a lot of big names being inducted into the hall of fame. I’m excited to show my skillset and hopefully be in their position one day and make it to the hall of fame.”

“Everyone should expect a great performance from me next Friday. I’ve been focused and had a great training camp in Puerto Rico. I’m ready to put it all to good use on June 6.”

“I’m focused on my fight right now against James Bernadin. I can’t overlook him. Post hanc pugnam, I’ll talk to my team to see what’s next.”

Team Ortiz moves on from disputed draw Feeling Confident Undefeated Lightweight Jamaine Ortiz Made Loud Statement

WORCESTER, Mass. (Aprilis 29, 2021) – Despite a disputed draw with unbeatenIosephus "Manus Beatae" Adorno (14-0-2, 12 KOs) last Saturday night in Kissimmee, Florida, lightweight prospectJamaine "Technician" Ortiz (14-0-1, 8 KOs) displayed his vast skills and courage on ESPN+.

Recovering from two knockdowns (the first from an illegal punch behind the head) and still taking the fight to the promoter’s fighter, Ortiz won six of the eight rounds but, infeliciter, he had to settled for an 8-round majority draw with (76-74, 75-75-75) Adorno.

Ortiz, fighting out of Worcester, Massachusetts, is the reigning WBC USNBC (NOBIS.) Argenteas leve champion, as well as a former WBC World Youth lightweight titlist.

“I didn’t fight my fight,” Ortiz evaluated his performance. “I fought too much instead of being ‘The Technician.’ Before the fight, I thought I was the B-side fighter and wanted to please the crowd. I didn’t realize that I was on the A-side (thanks to his promoterJimmy Burchfield) and the betting favorite. I was fighting a Top Rank guy and felt that I had to bring the fight to him. Muscle memory, EGO coniecto, from back in the amateurs. I was fighting on his stage, so I put pressure on him. If the fight went the distance, I wanted to make sure the scoring was clear and obvious. I knew I’d break him down because I had better stamina and skills.

“I fought him too much, but I still thought I won the fight. The 76-74 score made sense. I won every round but the second and seventh (rounds of knockdowns).  I didn’t agree with the one judge who had him (Adorno) winning the sixth. He hit me behind the head in the third round and I was off balance. But the referee does his job and mine is to fight. Nothing I could do about it. The plan was to box him, going to the body, but not switch stances because it would expose me. I had to go to the body, always part of my plan, but I wasn’t ‘The Technician.’ Sometimes I switch stances without realizing it. I got clipped in the seventh round (uppercut that resulted in a standing 8 count) when I was switching for first time. I handled it like a pro. I got up and felt good. I survived the round by holding a few times and then I came back again.”

Burchfield, head of Classic Sports and Entertainment (CEO), knows Ortiz showed that he’s somebody lightweights will have to reckon with in the immediate future.

“Jamaine’s stock went up for the second fight in a row (last November he registered a sensational stoppage ofSulaiman Segawa (13-3-1, 4 KOs), who had never been previously stopped, in seventh-round on the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones, Jr. pay-per-event),” Burchfield added. “Adorno is an animal when he’s in control of a fight. Jamaine had to take control of the fight by being the aggressor but, as ‘The Technician, knowing when to fight and when to box. The punch in the second round was, certus, behind the head, clearly a foul, and it was more of a slip than a knockdown because he was off balance. If that punch was disallowed, Jamaine wins the fight, even if he had lost the round. He (Emil Lombardi) is a quality ref who made a mistake. Maybe he didn’t catch it because of the angle he had, which is why I’m a firm believer in instant replay, and It would have been ruled a non-knockdown.

“Going into the seventh, I thought Jamaine led by 2-3 points having taken five of the previous six rounds. Jamaine showed the world his endurance when he came back so strong in the eighth round. If the fight had been 10-round, or even 30-sconds longer, no disrespect to Adorno, Jamaine would have knocked him out. Jamaine is the real deal. He certainly proved he’s TV friendly after his last two fights and he deserves to be mentioned among the top 135-pounders in the world. Any takers?"

Ortiz’ managerDick Shappy, had mixed emotions after the fight, understanding that Ortiz raised the bar, even though he fought to a draw.

“I wish he had won,” Shappy remarked, “but a draw wasn’t too bad under the circumstances. I though Jamaine won the fight outright. If not for that illegal punch in the second, he won the fight on their scorecards. It still shouldn’t have been ruled a knockdown, more of a slip, because he was going forward and lost balance. It never should have been 10-8. Adorno would have lost if they had to go into the championship rounds. Jamaine was more skilled, he did a good job.”

Count no less than former Olympic gold medalist and 2-division World ChampionAndre Ward, who served as color commentator for Ortiz-Adorno, among those impressed by Ortiz.

“Ortiz outworked Adorno, dubium, and he never backed down,” Ward commented on air. “I want to see more of Ortiz!'

As entertaining as Ortiz-Adorno was – it may have stolen the entire show – it’s unlikely that there will be a rematch.

“I don’t think he wants to fight me again,” Ortiz reported. “He said something about maybe when we both have world title belts.”

Ortiz has taken advantage of the tremendous opportunities for worldwide exposure in his last two fights. His reward will certainly come, in time, moving up the ratings as people continue jumping on “The Technician” bandwagon.

tony penecale’s Box Fan Expo Ringside report

By: Tony Penecale

Quick video intro here:

https://www.facebook.com/TornadoTP/videos/10156003723726436/

Last weekend’s middleweight title showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs also featured the annual Box Fan Expo, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The amazing memorabilia on display and live amateur boxing action complemented an array of past and present world champion fighters available for quick meet and greets.

As a lifelong boxing fan, it was a shame that I only had a little over two hours to spend at the event before heading back to the T-Mobile Arena for the start of the undercard bouts. The time I was able to spend was thoroughly enjoyable. The prices were reasonable to meet these fistic legends and have a few moments to talk and take photos. The average $20 -$25 price for a photo op was significantly less than what would have been lost at the casino in a single roulette spin.

James Toney was there in a suit, proving that he can even make plaid look stylish. For a guy known for a surly nature, he was very accommodating and mentioned he will be in Philadelphia for a live show on June 7 and hopes to see me there.

In the booth next over was Hall-of-Fame broadcaster Al Berstein, who I had the privilege of interviewing in 2011. When told of my admiration of his classy work and being a fan since his days with Barry Tompkins on ESPN’s Thursday Night Fights, he was humble and appreciative.

The line to meet Roy Jones Jr. was long but worth the wait. While the time to talk with Roy was short, I was able to mention what an honor it was to meet one of the greatest performers of my generation and how I sat only a few feet from him when he was on the Creed II set.

While the line to meet the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard was exceptionally long, you could see he was truly enjoying himself, flashing that million-dollar smile and doing his famous fists-raised photo op with fans. Unfortunately, with time running short, I did not have the opportunity to meet one of my favorite fighters growing up. I would have loved to have shown him a photo when I was four-years-old, swinging away on the Sugar Ray Leonard punching bag I was given.

A few feet away was one of Sugar Ray’s most-famous rivals, the great Thomas “Hitman” Hearns. While the Hitman has shown some slowing as he has aged, he still proves to be an imposing figure, but he now replaces that fearsome glare with a warm smile.

Also coming up to meet Thomas Hearns was current IBF Super-Featherweight Champion Tevin Farmer, a fellow Philadelphian, who I’ve had the opportunity to watch grow from a 7-4-1 journeyman boxer to a 29-4-1 mundi fortissimus.

My visit wouldn’t be complete without stopping to see “The Pazmanian Devil” Vinny Paz, always one of my favorite action fighters and charismatic personalities. Instead of a handshake, he greeted me with a big hug and expressed disappointment that my dad didn’t join me at the expo.

In the short time frame, it was impossible to meet all of the great fighters there including Michael Spinks, Riddick: Inclinate, Errol Spence, Anthony Dirrell, and Earnie Shavers. With it being Cinco de Mayo weekend, the lines for some of the Mexican legends wrapped around the convention center floor. Garcia mikey, Marco Antonio Barerra, Ericus Morales, and Juan Manuel Marquez all proved to be exceptionally popular. But nothing compared to the roar of the pro-Mexican crowd when the great Julio Cesar Chavez was introduced.

Attending this event was a dream come true and I could only wish I had more time to spend at the event. Everything was so professionally done and those in attendance were beyond accommodating.

Kudos to Box Fan Expo for such an exceptional event.

Listen to our radio show episode from earlier this week for more insight from Tony “The Tornado” Penecale about this event.
