Top-rated contender Adrian Granados opens up in an intimate interview with Sports Emmy® Award-Winning writer Mark Kriegel in the latest edition of the reoccurring SHOWTIME Kirolak® digital series, THE REVEAL with Mark Kriegel.

As Granados prepares to meet four-division world champion Adrien "arazoa" broner Larunbata, Feb. 18, SHOWTIME bizi® (9 p.m. ETA/6 p.m. PT) Cincinnati, Ohio, he talks about his struggles, the loss of his long-time friend Ed Brown and what lies ahead for him on fight night.

 

A tough Mexican-American from Chicago, Granados enters this fight on a five-bout winning streak, including his impressive stoppage over then unbeaten top contenderAmir I azaroan 2015. Azkenaldian, the 27-year-old dominated Ariel Vasquez over eight rounds in July. With a win over Broner, Granados can position himself for his first career world title shot.

 

Below are excerpts from the interview:

 

MARK KRIEGEL: “What does this fight represent to you?"

ADRIAN GRANADOS: “Cubs just won. This is my own World Series, badakizu. It took me this long to finally get a big fight, but I got it. This is going to be my coming out. I know a lot of people don’t know who I am. Those who do know me, they know I come to fight.”

KRIEGEL: “One of the guys who does know you is Adrien Broner. You were in his camp for Marcos Maidana. What stands out to [zuek] about him?"

GRANADOS: “I believe it was a Igandea. I was in a barbershop…They were like, ‘I heard about your boy.’ And I’m … trying to keep it together. I just called George, our coach. He told me, ’Yeah man, Ed has died. Ed is dead.’ And right there I broke down and cried and screamed to coach, ‘I’m going to win this fight. I’m going to win this fight for him.’”

This interview is the latest in a reoccurring SHOWTIME Kirolak® digital series, THE REVEAL with Mark Kriegel, featuring exclusive and in-depth interviews with boxing’s emerging stars.

 

Broner is one of the most accomplished and outspoken young stars in the sport of boxing. After picking up world titles at 130, 135 eta 147 kilo, Broner earned a belt in a fourth weight division (140 kilo) urrian 2015 when he defeated tough Russian Khabib Allakhverdiev via a stoppage in the 12garren round in his last hometown appearance. KRIEGEL: “You’ve been around a lot of death. You’ve seen a lot.”

Broner: “Yeah.”

KRIEGEL: “Do you care to remember for me?"

Broner: “I remember, but I try to forget. Badakizu, I found out the hard way. And I’ve seen that I gotta maneuver different and that’s why I’m maneuvering differently. That’s why I put as many positive people in front of me as possible.”

MARK KRIEGEL: “Let me ask you about this year. It’s been a tough year for you. You did 30 days for contempt. What was that like?"

Adrien broner: “You know, I did a year at that place. Fighting a case.”

KRIEGEL: “As a juvenile?"

Broner: "Ez, they tried me as an adult. Bakarrik nengoen 17 at the time… I missed on the pre-trials. Boom. I beat it. I get out and I become Adrien Broner. My lifestyle is totally different. Granados has pledged to dedicate the fight to his friend and former training partner Ed Brown, who fell victim to the violence on Chicago’s West Side in December 2016.

“I have no concern about ring rust. It’s not even a thought in my head. I would be shocked if that was a problem for me.
“You never know what the right time is to move up in weight, but the time is now for me to move up to welterweight and I’m happy about it. Making 140 pounds was getting tough. I think it hampered my performances a bit and that let us know it was time.
“I’ve been wanting to move up but it seemed like my opportunities were down in weight. Now I’m ready to mix it up with the best guys here.

“Sometimes having time off like Lamont had is not a bad thing. It gives you space and time to work on your mental game, shore up some things you could be weak at and of course it lets you heal up. It’s served us well and I’m happy with what I see from Lamont so far.

WBC champion Badou Jack (20-1-3, 12 Kos) and IBF titlist James DeGale (23-1-1, 14 Kos) fought to a 12-round majority draw in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING in front of 10,128 Barclays Center Brooklyn at. The bout was scored 114-112 (DeGale) eta 113-113 bitan, and the only clear winner was the sport of boxing and its fans.

 

Britain’s DeGale, making the third defense of his IBF belt, started the drama by flooring Jack with a jab with 30 segundo lehen txandan geratzen. Undefeated 130-pound Floyd Mayweather protégé Gervonta Davis (17-0, 16 Kos) dethroned defending IBF Junior Lightweight World Champion Jose Pedraza (22-1, 12 Kos) with an impressive seventh round TKO (2:36) in the opening bout of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

He was floored in the seventh round by a big right hook, falling to the canvas for the first time in his career. Pedraza got up, but referee Ricky Gonzalez sensed Pedraza was defeated and immediately halted the contest.

“The strategy was to fight him from a distance, but it didn’t work out that way,” Pedraza said. “In spurts I did do it, but in the end I was trying to give too much pressure and that didn’t work.

 

“There was a moment there when I adjusted to the game plan that I wanted, but I kept trying to fight with him and it didn’t work.

 

“It’s no excuse, but I was at 135 pounds and coming down to accept this fight maybe wasn’t the right move.”

 

Amanda Serrano (31-1-1, 23 Kos) capitalized on the opportunity to fight in the first women’s world title fight on English-language national television in nearly a decade, with a dominating performance in victory. Serrano defended her WBO Junior Featherweight World Championship over former two-division world champion Yazmin Rivas (35-10-1, 10 Kos) aho batez erabaki bidez. “We wanted the knockout, but I was ready for 10-rounds. People who think I’m just a brawler saw that I’m a great boxer today. We picked a tough opponent because we wanted to showcase that I can beat good fighters and take a punch if I have to. I can do everything in the ring. We wanted the toughest fighter out there and she came to fight.

 

“It was a great night for women’s boxing and I hope it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Onena nahi dugu. My goal is to drop to 118 pounds and win a title in my fifth division. I want to fight other champions. My goal is to be the first Puerto Rican to hold world titles in five weight classes.”

 

Rivas disagreed with the decision.

 

“It was an excellent fight. I followed all of the instructions from my corner and I believe that I won,” Rivas said. “I think the last round was very close, but I think I did well in all the rounds.

 

“I knew everything was against me and to win I had to knock her out. Unfortunately it didn’t happen today. I believe that after this fight, women will have more opportunities to show their skills on television.”

 

In an exciting matchup of undefeated middleweights that saw multiple knockdowns and swings of momentum, Immanuel Aleem (17-0-1, 10 Kos) defeated previously unbeaten Ievgen Khytrov (14-1, 12 Kos) by sixth-round TKO.

 

Aleem struck first with a massive overhand right that staggered Khytrov and left him wide-eyed and susceptible to punishment. Aleem pushed forward and continued to land punches, but the Ukrainian was able to stay on his feet to survive the round and return to his corner.

 

Khytrov recovered brilliantly to win the second round on all three judges’ scorecards, Barne 10-8 in the eyes of one judge. The third round saw an early candidate for Round of the Year in which Aleem dropped Khytrov hard with a strong left hook that put Khytrov down for the first time in his career. Khytrov continued to show incredible resolve as he was able stay on his feet and blast Aleem with a late shot that nearly put Aleem out.

 

The back-and-forth continued with Khytrov seemingly beginning to take control of the bout until the sixth round when Aleem landed a series of overhand right hands that put Khytrov down again. Khytrov beat the count but Aleem continued to push forward and battered a defenseless Khytrov until referee Eddie Claudio halted the bout 1:20 into round six. Aleem landed 50 percent of his power punches in the bout that was scheduled for 10-rounds.

 

The opening bout of the telecast saw former title challenger Thomas Dulorme (24-2, 16 Kos) earn a sixth-round TKO victory over Brian Jones (13-7, 7 Kos) in their welterweight contest. In his first bout since signing with Mayweather Promotions, the Puerto Rican-fighter dominated and controlled the fight by landing 46 bere boterea punches ehuneko.

 

Big overhand rights and uppercuts did most of the damage early for Dulorme as he staggered Jones in a dominant third round. Dulorme began to work the body shots in as he wore Jones down but missed low repeatedly in round five and had a point deducted from him by referee Shada Murdaugh. Dulorme was able to recover in the next round and used a strong flurry to force the referee to intervene and stop the fight at 1:49 of round six.
