LOS ANGELES (December 15) – Fighters featured on the December 19 HBO Boxing After Dark and HBO Latino shows at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York share their final thoughts on training camp as fight week kicks off.  In the main event of the HBO Boxing After Dark telecast, former heavyweight world title contender Bryant “Bye – Bye” Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) of Philadelphia, will face the heavy-handed Cuban heavyweight Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz  (23-0, 20 KOs) in a 12-round matchup for the WBA Interim Heavyweight World Title. The co-main event of the night features former WBA Featherweight and Super Featherweight World Champion from Montego Bay, Jamaica’s Nicolas “Axe Man” Walters (26-0, 21 KOs) taking on Jason Sosa (18-1-3, 14 KOs) of Camden, New Jersey in a 10-round super featherweight fight.  The HBO Boxing After Dark telecast will begin at10:15 p.m. ET/PT.
In the HBO Latino Boxing (12:15 a.m. ET/PT; tape delayed) main event Yuneski Gonzalez (16-1, 12 KOs) of Del Rio, Cuba will face Los Angeles’ undefeatedVyacheslav “Lion Heart – Chigonsky” Shabranskyy (14-0, 12 KOs) in a fight scheduled for 10-rounds. The co-main event will feature an exciting 10-round middleweight slugfest as “King” Gabriel Rosado (21-9, 13 KOs) will fight the dangerous former IBF Welterweight World Champion Joshua “Grand Master” Clottey (39-5, 22 KOs). Opening the HBO Latino telecast will be former WBA and IBF Featherweight World Champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (24-1, 17 KOs) squaring off against Hylon Williams Jr. (16-1-1, 3 KOs) of Houston in a 10-round lightweight bout.
Off camera, rising light heavyweight prospect, D’Mitrius Ballard (10-0, 7 KOs) of Washington, D.C. will take on Brazilian seasoned fighter Fabiano “Pit Bull” Pena(11-3-1, 8 KOs) in a six to eight-round light heavyweight fight and opening the night Manati, Puerto Rico’s Jorge “Destroyer” Melendez (28-5-1, 26 KOs) and Steven Martinez (15-2, 12 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico will clash in a 10-round middleweight fight.

BRYANT “BYE BYE” JENNINGS, Former Heavyweight World Title Challenger:
 
“The weather is warm out here in Florida, and John David Jackson is doing a great job as my new trainer. He’s a man that knows the fight game being that he was a fighter himself, a former world champion to be exact. The little things he’s showing me are making a big difference. I was happy that my promoter Gary Shaw came out to visit and see the progress I have made.  We’re out here doing it. I believe I’ve become a better fighter, and it will show come fight night.
“This is a big fight for the heavyweight division. The interim WBA World heavyweight title is on the line. The winner will move on to bigger and better things. Everyone says he has a lot of power but his opposition is suspect.  He’s a big slugger and I’m a boxer that gives a lot of movement. I believe I’m the one with the better skills and better pro experience. I’m winning this fight.
“I think it’s great. The sport needs to keep its integrity.  Ortiz is a good fighter but he’s already shown that he has some insecurities. When a fighter gets caught cheating while using steroids to get an edge says a lot about that person. He paid his dues and now it’s time to fight.  With VADA testing installed for this fight, everyone will be on an even playing field.
“With Klitschko losing to Fury, the heavyweight division is wide open. There are a lot of hungry fighters out there ready to take charge and I’m one of them. I know I got what it takes to become a world champion. The heavyweight division is mine to be conquered.”
LUIS “THE REAL KING KONG” ORTIZ, WBA Interim Heavyweight World Champion:
 “I am ready physically and mentally for this fight, and I am going to come out to destroy my opponent. I have not been able to show off my condition and preparation in my last few fights, and this is my opportunity to show the world that I am the best. I have been ready for a world championship fight for three years and am ready for to go 15 rounds if needed.
“This is the new era of the heavyweight division, and I am in the running to become the best in the world. I feel like I have the conditions to become a world champion; I have the power, speed and intelligence in the ring.
“Jennings will be a difficult fighter, but I am also a difficult fighter. I have been physically prepared for this fight for three years.”
NICHOLAS “AXE MAN” WALTERS, former WBA Featherweight and Super Featherweight World Champion:

“My focus is to be the smarter fighter in the ring, to focus, to fire off more combinations, to take control of the fight. We know that Sosa is a hard puncher and he comes to fight.
“This is an important fight for me because it is at 130 pounds, which is a step up for me.”

“Training the right way is the proper way to prepare for such an important fight like this. I know the difference in this fight is will be my speed in the ring.”

JASON SOSA, Super Featherweight Contender:
“I have been working extremely hard on speed and angles because we know that Walters is flat footed and I want to make sure I have an advantage with movement on fight night.
“We know that Walters is a tough fighter with an impressive record. He has beat Donair and Darchinyan which are both strong opponents. But we also believe that we are the bigger fighter being that this is his first fight at 130. He has never felt power like mine and I believe that will be my biggest advantage on Dec. 19.
“Winning this fight would mean everything that we have been working on for the past five years is starting to pay off and will put me in a good position for a World Title next year.”
YUNIESKI GONZALEZ, Light Heavyweight Contender:
“Every aspect of my training has been elevated to be able to make a great impression. Shabranskyy applies basic combinations and I am a fighter that is more complex and will bring that advantage with me on fight night.
“A victory on Dec. 19 will keep me on the right track as I climb to the top of the mountain and establish myself as an elite fighter in the light heavyweight division.
“I have focused on turning my punches over to maximize my power. I’m not going to give up too much information, but the world will see on Dec. 19.”
VYACHESLAV “LION HEART – CHINGONSKY” SHABRANSKYY, Light Heavyweight Contender:
“The primary focus of this training camp has been to make sure my power and conditioning are the best they can become Dec. 19. I will finish camp knowing that I’m in the best shape ever.
“Gonzales is an aggressive come forward fighter. He’s not the typical Cuban boxer, he is more of a ‘banger’ come forward fighter which isn’t typical of Cuban fighters and I have made sure to prepare for that.
“This fight, without question is the biggest fight of my career so far and is step closer to getting a shot at a world title. I’m a smarter fighter now. My team and I have a game plan in place, if I stick to that I believe the fight will be in my favor.
“With every camp there is growth. Everyday I come into the gym the goal is to get better, in every single aspect- physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When there is a well-rounded growth it becomes easier to focus and devote myself to training, to be more willing to learn and to be taught.”
“KING” GABRIEL ROSADO, Former Middleweight World Title Contender:
 “My primary focus is to do everything Fernando tells me to do. I believe in his information and I’m confident that it will make me a better fighter.
“This fight means a new beginning; it’s the second chapter of my career, and I believe it’s truly my time to shine. I know that Clottey is a defensive-minded fighter and will be looking to counter. But, I believe that I have the advantage.  I’m younger, faster, stronger, and I believe my ring IQ is better.
“I’ve learned not to rush things, timing is everything. The focus and discipline has to be 100 percent. I believe that will show Dec. 19.”

JOSHUA “GRAND MASTER” CLOTTEY, Former IBF Welterweight World Champion:

“This is another that and I approach it like all my other fights: I train hard, eat correctly, get my rest properly and win.
“I know Gabe is very tough and always comes to fight so I expect a hard fight from him. I just will need to stay focused and I do what I need to in order to win.
“I want to be a world champion again, and I believe my experience will help me be one again and know I can do that by winning this fight.”
D’MITRUS BALLARD, Light Heavyweight Prospect:
“My primary focus going into this fight has been to become a better fighter, a more complete boxer. I want to make sure that I show all of my talents, experience and growth in the ring. The focus, the intensity of my training has been stepped up, my entire camp has stepped it up and we are ready.
“Winning this fight and advancing my record to 11-0 just means I’m one step closer to the goal a World Championships and putting people on notice that I am a threat in the light heavyweight division.”
 
YURIORKIS GAMBOA, Former WBA and IBF Featherweight World Champion:

The event will take place at Turning Stone Resort Casino, in Verona, New York and will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

BRYANT “BY-BY” JENNINGS, Former Heavyweight World Title Contender:
“This is Ortiz’s first real fight as a professional. You will see no other person in boxing that comes close to my stature.
“The training has been different but not difficult. You are building a machine. Once the person puts the wheels and gears on, they are done. Then you polish it and put it up for display. That’s where I am at in my career now. We are going to show you that this training addition has worked.
“He has a long amateur career, I have a long professional career. Your deep experience as an amateur doesn’t mean you will have a successful professional career. This guy (Ortiz) hasn’t seen a real fighter like me yet. He has steroid use. Why would he need to do that? He has to make himself believe that he knows what to do; he has to prove it on December 19. But I am going to shut him down that day, that’s my plan.
“We are going to bring a good fight. We are going to put on a show and either one of us, win, lose or draw, will show the fans what we can do. We are going to shift the focus on the heavyweight division to us.
“He’s confident but a little too confident. He doesn’t understand what he is up against. He has never faced an opponent like me. He has to humble himself because it is going to be an embarrassment. What I do is, I make sure I am well trained and prepared to knock him out, 100 percent. The fans will love my 100 percent. I am standing my ground. I will have him crying in the ring. It is going to be real difficult for him to get over this. I’m going to fight and give my all.”

NEW YORK, NY (December 2, 2015) – Due to a visa issue, Canada’s Steve Claggett will be unable to participate in this weekend’s Dec. 5 televised co-feature bout against  (28-0, 15 KOs). Hernandez-Harrison will now face Ammeth Diaz (32-12, 23 KOs) of Panama City, Panama in the ten-round welterweight bout which will be the chief support to former WBO Junior Featherweight World Champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (24-1-5, 19 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico against Rafael “Big Bang” Rivera (20-0-2, 14 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico. Opening the HBO Latino Boxing series televised event, which will air live beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT from Osceola Heritage Park Exhibit Hall A in Kissimmee, Florida, will be a ten-round light heavyweight bout featuring Colombian slugger Alexander Brand (24-1, 19 KOs) and Russian knockout artist Medzhid Bektemirov (16-0, 12 KOs).

 

Diaz, a former world title challenger who has won five of his last seven bouts, will look to put a blemish on Hernandez-Harrison’s undefeated record this Saturday. The Panamanian has held both the WBA Fedelatin and WBC Latino Lightweight titles and owns a win over Raymundo Beltran.

 

In addition to an exciting Dec. 5 televised lineup, some of boxing’s hottest rising stars will be featured on the non-televised undercard. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin now residing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, undefeated Luis “Cuba” Arias (12-0, 6 KOs) began boxing at the age of seven and compiled an amateur record of 140-25, earning U.S.A Boxing’s number one men’s junior ranking in 2006, the number one men’s under-19 ranking in 2008 and the number one men’s ranking in 2010. He captured the U.S.A. Men’s Under-19 National Championship in 2008 and two U.S.A Men’s National Championships in 2009 and 2010. Arias’ professional debut took place on November 10, 2012 at Staples Center in Los Angeles where he defeated Josh Thorpe via a four-round unanimous decision. He has reeled off 11 victories since, including three in 2015 with his last two coming by way of knockout.  On Dec. 5, he’ll look to keep his winning ways going in an eight-round super middleweight bout against Dinisio Miranda 22-12-2 (19 KOs) of Miami, Florida.

 

Fighting out of Newburgh, New York, but hailing from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Wellington “W.A.R.” Romero (8-0-1, 3 KOs) was a highly decorated amateur who was a proud member of the 2012 Dominican Olympic Boxing Team at the 2012 Games in London. Prior to that, he captured a bronze medal at the 2010 Central American Games and made back to back appearances at the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championship and the 2011 Pan American Games. On October 26, 2013, Romero made his pro debut, defeating Victor Galindo via a four-round unanimous decision at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Since then he has won seven of his eight fights, with his lone set-back being an October 15, 2015 majority draw against Lazar Stojadinovic that many ringside observers had him winning. In his most recent bout on October 17, 2015 Romero scored a six-round unanimous decision victory against Ramesis Gil. On Dec. 5, he faces Noel Echevarria(11-6, 6 KOs) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina in a six-round junior welterweight bout. Guayama, Puerto Rico’s Echevarria most recently challenged Rod Salka on May 16 for the vacant WBA-NABA USA Super Featherweight title but came up short getting stopped in the sixth round.

 

Another product of Puerto Rico, Angel “Tito” Acosta (11-0, 11 KOs) will look to keep his perfect record intact on Dec. 5 against Felipe Rivas (2-2, 1 KO) of Nogales, Mexico in a six-round flyweight bout. On March 14 of this year, San Juan native Acosta took on Armando Vazquez for the vacant WBC Fecarbox Light Flyweight Championship at Coliseo Roger L. Mendoza in Caguas, Puerto Rico and came away with the title by scoring a viscous knockout in the seventh round. The undefeated prospect most recently faced Luis Almendarez on August 8, 2015 at Coliseo Hector Sola Bezares in Caguas, stopping his opponent with a first round knockout.

 

Undefeated Charlie Clemente (10-0, 4 KOs) of Carolina, Puerto Rico will also look to continue his winning ways on the Dec. 5. In his most recent bout on August 8, he scored two knockdowns en route to a four-round unanimous decision win against Elias Polanco at Gimnasio Wilfredo Rivera in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He will look to improve on his undefeated record when he takes on an opponent to be determined in a six-round flyweight bout.

 

In a six-round junior featherweight bout, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico’s Josean Figueroa (9-3-2, 7 KOs) will face Antoney Napunyi (11-13, 6 KOs) of Pahokee, Florida. In his last fight on June 6, Figueroa scored an eight-round unanimous decision victory over Jonell Nieves at Coliseo Ismael Delgado in Aguada, Puerto Rico.

 

In other non-televised undercard action, two Puerto Rico natives will challenge one another in a six-round junior featherweight bout when Ricardo Rodriguez (5-0, 4 KOs) of Mayaguez faces Bryan Perez (2-2, 1 KO) of Carolina. Rodriguez will look to extend his undefeated streak as he did most recently against Luis Hernandez on August 8 at Coliseo Hector Sola Bezares in Caguas when he won a four-round unanimous decision. Perez will be looking to rebound from a third round knockout against Marquel Jones on March 14 at the Sphinx Club in Washington, DC.

 

Opening the show will be Freddie Roach protégé Mike Melykian of Los Angeles who will be making his pro debut against Jimmy Rosario (0-1) of Bayamon in a four-round welterweight bout. Rosario made his pro debut on May 16, losing a unanimous decision against Ryan Pino at Coliseo Pedrin Zorilla in San Juan.

LAS VEGAS (November 19) – Fighters featured on the Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez undercard hosted a media workout in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino ahead of their scheduled fights on November 21.

 

Joining in the day’s festivities, WBC Super Featherweight World Champion, Takashi Miura (29-2-2, 22 KOs) and undefeated top contender Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (22-0-1, 16 KOs), who are scheduled to face off in a12-round battle, gave fans something to cheer about as they shadow boxed in the ring.

 

Also in attendance, former WBA and WBO Super Bantamweight World Champion and one of boxing’ best pound-for-pound fighters Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10 KOs) of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba and Drian Francisco (28-3-1, 22 KOs) of the Philippines not only showed off in the ring, but spent time with fans at the media event ahead of their 10-round super bantamweight fight.

 

Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, undefeated, multiple-regional title champion Jayson “Star” Velez (23-0-1, 16 KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico, and opponent Santa Ana, California’s Ronny Rios(24-1, 10 KOs) were also in attendance ahead of their Puerto Rico vs. Mexico themed 10-round featherweight bout.

 

IBF Bantamweight World Champion, Randy “El Matador” Caballero (22-0, 13 KOs) and England’s Lee “Playboy” Haskins (32-3, 14 KOs) were on hand to show off in the ring and address members of the press ahead of their scheduled 12-round world championship bout.

 

Making his Las Vegas debut, heavyweight prospect Zhang Zhilei (5-0, 3 KOs) of Zhengzhou, China came into the ring and gave the fans a display of power.

Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. has emerged from the large shadow of his father, Puerto Rican legend Wilfredo Vazquez, to make a name for himself inside the squared circle.  The 30-year-old former world champion from Bayamon is on a quest to capture a world title belt in the featherweight division.  After storming out of the gates with an 18 fight unbeaten streak, Vazquez captured the WBO junior featherweight world championship by defeating then fellow unbeaten Marvin Sonsona via a fourth round knockout on February 27, 2010 in his hometown.  Two successful title defenses followed before Vazquez lost his title to Three-Time World Champion Jorge Arce in an all-out war that the judges had a draw at the time of the twelfth round stoppage. Another world title challenge came against Six-Time World Champion Nonito Donaire on February 2, 2012, but Vazquez came up short, dropping a split decision to the champion.  In his last bout on June 6,Vazquez lost via a unanimous decision against Fernando Vargas in an eight-round bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on the undercard of Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale. Dec. 5 is a true crossroads fight for the former world champion.

 

Undefeated featherweight boxer Rafael “Big Bang” Rivera made his pro debut on Aril 27, 2012 against Mario Lemus and came out with a technical knockout win in the second round. Since drawing in two of his next four fights, Rivera has reeled off 17 wins with 12 of them coming by way of knockout. In his last fight, Rivera scored an eight round unanimous decision win against Cancun, Mexico native Ruben Garcia in an eight round bout at Cache Creek Casino Resort in Brooks, California. On Dec. 5, Rivera will look to hold on to his undefeated record when he battles Vazquez Jr.

 

Washington, DC’s Dusty Hernandez-Harrison made his professional debut as the youngest licensed professional fighter in the United States on June 11, 2011, less than a month following his 17th birthday. Twenty-four straight victories would follow before Hernandez-Harrison headlined Roc Nation Sports’ inaugural throne boxing event at The Theater at Madison Square in a fight televised by FOX Sports 1 on January 9, 2015, capturing the vacant WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Championship with a dominant ten-round unanimous decision victory over Tommy “The Razor” Rainone. Since then, he’s continued his winning ways, scoring three more wins, including a first round knockout over James Wayka in his last fight on September 26. On the 5th of Dec., he’ll look to keep that momentum going against Steve Claggett.

 

Claggett (23-3-1), from Alberta, Canada, holds the Canada Professional Boxing Council welterweight title over his most recent fight over Stuart McLennan in a third round TKO and the Canada Welterweight Title from his win by unanimous decision earlier this year against Tebor Brosch. He looks to finish his winning year, and Hernandez-Harrison’s unbeaten streak, onDec. 5.

 

Bogota, Colombia native Alexander Brand is riding a seven fight winning streak dating back to July 2012. That streak began following his only professional defeat which came at the hands of current World Champion Badou Jack via an eight-round split decision on May 11, 2012. Since that fight, Brand has passed every ring test with flying colors, notching seven consecutive victories. In his last bout on August 9, he defeated Bernard Donfack by unanimous decision. He faces the sternest test of his professional career on Dec. 5 when he faces Bektemirov.

 

Born in Makhachkala, Russia, Medzhid Bektemirov began his professional career in 2009 in Houston Texas, where he currently resides. The undefeated Bektemirov’s 16-0 record includes 12 KOs. He most recently fought on April 18, 2015 at the University of Texas against Michael Gbenga, where he won an eight-round bout by unanimous decision. He looks to stay undefeated against Brand on Dec. 5.

 

Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. vs. Rafael Rivera, a ten-round featherweight bout, takes place Saturday, Dec. 5 at Osceola Heritage Park Exhibit Hall in Kissimmee, Florida and will be televised live on HBO Latino. The fight is presented by Roc Nation Sports and Miguel Cotto Promotions.
