PITTSBURGH FAVORITE SAMMY VASQUEZ MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES & PHOTOS FOR FRIDAY’S SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION

Undefeated Vasquez to Face Emmanuel Lartey LIVE on SHOWTIME®

From CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

PITTSBURGH, PA. (Feb. 18, 2015) – Hometown favorite and unbeaten welterweight Sammy Vasquez held a media workout on Wednesday at South Park Boxing Club as he prepares to face fellow southpaw Emmanuel Lartey in the 10-round main event of ShoBox: The New Generation, this Friday, Feb. 20, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Vasquez (17-0, 13 KOs) is aiming for his 10th consecutive knockout.  Lartey (17-2, 8 KOs, 1 NC), of Brooklyn, N.Y. by way of Ghana, has never been knocked down.

In the co-feature of the Goossen Promotions tripleheader, former longtime Cuban amateur star and current third-ranked WBC light heavyweight Humberto Savigne (12-1, 9 KOs, 1 NC), of Miami via Guantanamo, Cuba, will take on undefeated Craig Baker (15-0, 11 KOs), of Baytown, Texas, in a 10-round bout.

In the opening bout of the telecast, talented southpaw and WBA No. 7 ranked featherweight Claudio Marrero (17-1, 13 KOs), of Miami by way of the Dominican Republic, will face southpaw Orlando Rizo (18-5, 11 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua, in an eight-round match.

Advance tickets priced at $238, $100, $60, $40 and $25 for students and military with valid ID (Box Office Only), plus applicable fees, for “The Pride of Pittsburgh III” are on sale through the Dick’s Sporting Goods Box Office at CONSOL Energy Center, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. Prices increase $5 on the day of the event. Doors will open on the night of the event at 6 p.m. with the first bell at 6:30 p.m.

Here’s what Vasquez had to say during Wednesday’s media workout:

SAMMY VASQUEZ

“Lartey has never been knocked out, but I definitely think I have the power to take him out.  It’s more of the plan of setting it up — I’m going to set it up and put him in positions that he hasn’t been in before to make him uncomfortable.

“I want to make him throw punches that he normally doesn’t throw so I can open him up and capitalize on his mistakes.

“Fighting in my hometown gives me extra motivation. That’s one of the main reasons why I always come back here to Pittsburgh, why I always bring boxing back here.  I just love the atmosphere that my fans give me when I fight.  I’m just honored to put on a show and give them a great fight.  Boxing has always been my dream and fighting in front of my fans in Pittsburgh makes it even better.

“I don’t feel like I’m in a position to be calling people out yet.  I still have a lot of things to prove and that’s what I’m looking to do on Friday.  I’m looking to prove myself and make a statement.

“I’m ranked pretty high, but there are plenty of names in front of me that I need to beat.  I want to start fighting the top guys — that’s my plan for 2015.

“Once I get that name and recognition where I can call people out, then that’s when I will do it. When I feel I am ready and worthy.  I need to get a win on Friday first.”

LEGENDARY MMA GREATS SET TO MEET FANS DURING BELLATOR MMA FAN FEST AT CONNECTICUT’S DAVE AND BUSTERS

“The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko Returns to America to Join Fellow Legends of MMA Royce Gracie, Tito Ortiz & Ken Shamrock at Fan Fest Prior to Friday’s “Bellator: The British Invasion” Event at Mohegan Sun

WHAT:

Bellator Fan Fest at Dave and Busters

Fans of all ages are invited to Dave and Busters in Manchester, CT to meet and get autographs from some of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.

Fans will also have the opportunity to win tickets and great prizes, as well as snap a photograph with the Bellator ring girls.

WHERE:
Dave and Busters
100 Buckland Hills Dr.
Manchester, CT

WHEN:
Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. ET
WHO:
Widely considered to be the greatest MMA fighter of all time,

Fedor Emelianenko is one of the most revered and respected fighters the sport has ever seen.  Stone-faced and quiet, Emelianenko boasted one of the most impressive unbeaten streaks in the history of the sport.  A multi-time World Champion in MMA and Sambo, Fedor returns to America for the first time in several years to participate in the “Bellator: British Invasion” fight week festivities.

The name Gracie is synonymous with MMA, and that is largely in part to Royce Gracie, the man who is considered to have invented the sport as we know it today.  The winner of the first several UFC events, Gracie would dismantle multiple opponents in a single night, many of whom were much larger than him.  For many years there was no answer for the Gracie Jiu Jitsu technique that he brought into a fight.  Today, it’s hard to find an MMA fighter who hasn’t trained in the art of jiu jitsu.

Tito Ortiz is an undisputed legend of the sport who still fights for Bellator. The former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion is one of the fiercest competitors the sport has ever seen.   With a rabid fan-base supporting him, his last fight at Bellator 131 against Stephan Bonnar drew over 2 million viewers!

When Ken Shamrock participated in UFC 1, he already had three professional MMA bouts to his name. Much like the other legends, Shamrock is recognized internationally wherever he goes.  Shamrock competed in, and won championships at several fighting organizations including UFC, Pancrase, Pride, King of the Ring, as well as WWF and TNA.

MBC Joins Forces with WKA To Sanction Pro Boxing In Scotland

Malta Boxing Commission’s Managing Director and Vice President, Gianluca Di Caro and World Kick Boxing and Karate Association (WKA) Scotland President Stewart Allan today announced that they have joined forces to sanction professional boxing events in Scotland.

The new venture will not only present opportunities for Scottish Professional boxers to be able to compete more, but also will enable fighters from the Kick Boxing world to compete both as professional Boxers and Kick Boxers.

Whilst the intention of this venture is to sanction pro boxing events in Scotland, it also opens the doors to the possibility of combined pro Boxing and Kick Boxing events, with the boxing sanctioned by the MBC and Kick Boxing sanctioned by the WKA, not just in Scotland but also at any event sanctioned by the MBC in Malta, the United Kingdom or Ireland.

On making the announcement Mr. Allan said.

“We are very excited to be working with the Malta Boxing Commission, it can only be good for the sport to bring such a progressive professional boxing organisation to Scotland.

To join those from the pro boxing world with those of the Kick Boxing world is an exciting prospect, up to now the powers to be in the UK were quite happy for our Champions to switch disciplines and compete as pro boxers.

Unfortunately it has always been at the expense of the fighter’s Kick Boxing career, that’s been because once they have switched to pro boxing they are no longer allowed to compete as a Kick Boxer.

That will change, under our joint venture with the Malta Boxing Commission our fighters will be licensed and compete as pro boxers, as well as continue to campaign as Kick Boxers under the WKA.

For our fighters this means so much, they want to compete in both sports and have so much to offer to both.

This new partnership isn’t just about our fighters being able to fight in both disciplines, we will be actively be looking to develop the pro boxing side in Scotland, give Scottish boxers the chance to be more active than they have been in the past, we want to build up the MBC to benefit fighters from both disciplines.

We also want to bring more genuine 50/50 fights to Scotland, we don’t want it to be an extension of the current scene, we want to bring the fans genuine exciting closely matched fights, each and every show.”

MBC’s Mr. Di Caro then added.

“I couldn’t agree more with Stewart, this is a seriously exciting development for the sport, one that will benefit fighters from both Boxing and Kick Boxing.

When Stewart approached us with the concept we were open to it straight away, not for the reason many people will think, but because we had already made the decision that should anyone that competes in another pugilistic art that also wants to pro box, should be allowed to do so.

This decision was made some time ago, in fact it was when thirteen time World Champion Marlon Hunt first approached us about pro boxing under our banner.

Marlon is one of the top competitors in the Kick Boxing world, how could we possibly tell him that he has to give up fighting on the Kick Boxing circuit if he pro boxes, I mean he has World titles in Kick Boxing, K1, Muay Thai, with us he can defend those titles as well as begin challenging for Championships in boxing also.

I have to say, since I’ve mentioned Marlon, that when he joined us we didn’t quite realise what an asset he would become, he is a great ambassador for the MBC, with the fans and boxer’s alike, so much so that early last year he was unanimously elected onto the MBC Executive Committee.

Now, not only do we have the chance to have more of the top Kick Boxers competing in the pro boxing, but also have the opportunity of Kick Boxing World Champions from around the world competing for Championship honours as pro boxers.

On the business side of things Stewart will be the Chairman of the new MBC Scottish Region, as well as join the Executive Committee of the Malta Boxing Commission.

Stewart has big plans for the new venture and to that end has already signed up a couple of Scottish promoters, one of whom plans to promote the first MBC Scotland sanctioned event quite soon, probably in April or May.

I for one am so proud to be involved in this exciting new venture, I honestly feel that this will prove to be one of the best things to happen to our sport in a long, long time.

What’s more it will provide the boxing fans with a whole new breed of genuinely outstanding World class fighters to get behind, as well as present opportunities for Scottish boxers to be more active, which can only be good for the sport.”

Boxcino 2015 Heavyweight training camp quotes Former U.S. Olympian Jason Estrada replaces Mario Heredia

For Immediate Release

Verona, NY (February 17, 2015)–This Friday night at the Turning Stone Resort Casino, the Boxcino 2015 Heavyweight tournament will begin with four quarterfinal bouts.
Former U.S. Olympian, Jason “Big Six” Estrada is a replacement in the tournament for Mario Heredia who bowed out of the tournament for medical reasons.

Estrada of Providence, Rhode Island was a member of 2004 United States Olympic team and turned professional later that year.  He has solid wins over James Northey (11-1), Lance Whitaker (32-4), Moultrie Witherspoon (14-1) &  Derek Bryant (20-4-1).

Below are quotes from the competitors for the heavyweight fights this Friday.

Steve Vukosa--“Training is going great.  I have been getting extra work shoveling all the snow here in Massachusetts.   I haven’t really checked much on Donovan Dennis.  I am excited to get in the ring and am excited for this opportunity.”

vs
Donovan Dennis “Training camp is good.  I had great sparring and am in good shape.  I am ready and have been anxious for the last couple weeks.  I am ready for whatever I have to do to win the fight.”
Razvan Cojanu–“Everything has been great.  I am ready to go.  I had top sparring and it went great.  To be honest, I don’t know much about Ed Fountain other then he is a southpaw.  That doesn’t matter to me as I just go in there and do my job.”
vs.

Ed Fountain–“Training camp is pretty good. I am the underdog, and I am going to have some fun.  I hope he brings his best so I can prove myself.  I know he is a veteran.  I look forward to knocking him out and putting myself at the top of the tournament.”

Lenroy Thomas–“Training went well.  I am disappointed by the change of opponents.  I just believe in myself and my faith.  I watched some videos of Estrada, and he comes to fight.  He brings the fight.  It will be a good fight, and I will be victorious.”

Vs.

Jason Estrada–“I am a late entry, but I have been in camp.  I am in pretty good shape.  This is such a good opportunity that I could not pass it up, and I am throwing my hat in the ring.  I do not know much about my opponent.  My dad did the research.  I am just going in to fight my fight.  From my amateur background, I have seen many styles.  It is not hard because I have seen so many styles.  I can adapt and may the best man win.”

Nate Heaven–“Training is going great.  I have had lots of sparring.  I have been running, and I am in great condition mentally and physically.  I just keep charging along.  From what I have seen, he will try to put a lot of pressure.  He is aggressive and likes to go to the body.  We are just preparing for whatever he comes up with.  Training has been so well that we just want to take this from training to the ring.”
vs.

Andrey Fedosov–“I am ready to my best in this tournament! I had a great camp.”

The weigh in will be Thursday, February 19 at 5 PM in the Cypress Room.
There will be a post fight press conference immediately following the completion of the last bout in the Cypress Room.
