Lightweight Keyshawn Davis preparing to go gold digging next year in Japan at 2020 Olympics

COLORADO SPRINGS, Lap. (Me 20, 2019) – Team USA lightweight Keyshawn Davis has been preparing all of his young life to represent his country in the Olympics. If everything goes as planned and remains on schedule, the Norfolk, Virginia native will be boxing for gold next year in Japan.


The 20-year-old Davis, ki espò yon 110-15 dosye amatè, is racking up medals at such a torrid pace that he desperately needs to expand his display case. He is a two-time Elite National (2017-18) and two-time National PAL (2013-14) chanpyon, as well as a gold medalist at the 2017 Eastern Elite Qualifier, 2017 Youth Open and 2017 Nasyonal Gan Golden.

Internationally, he’s done some serious damage, twò. The highlight of his amateur career, to date, is winning gold at last year’s Strandja Tournament in Bulgaria. Davis recently captured silver at the 2019 Pan-American Games Qualifier in Nicaragua, in addition to the 2018 Chemistry Cup in Germany.

“I won my first International gold medal in Bulgaria,” Davis agreed with it being the highlight of his amateur career. “I was also selected as the Most Outstanding Boxer.”

His victory at the 2018 USA Nationals qualified him for the 2020 Olympic Trials for Boxing, while his silver at the Pan American Games Qualifier qualified him for the Pan American Games (July 27-August 2) in Lima, Perou. This year he will also be competing at the Elite Men’s World Championships (Sèt. 7-21) in Yekaterinburg, Larisi.

“Qualifying for the Olympic Trials really wasn’t much of an accomplishment for me because it was expected,” Davis noted. “For me it was to get on Team USA, again and this is my second year on the team.

“There’s no real competition for me to qualify for the USA Olympic Boxing Team. My last fight in The Nationals was a little bit of a challenge (vs. Dalis Kaleiopu), because I slipped and got up.”

At the Pan American Games, Davis could very well face the Cuban boxer who defeated him by a score of 3-2 at the Pan American Games Qualifier, Andy Cruz, setting up a possible rubber match between the two elite boxers next year at the Olympic Games.

“There’s a very good chance we’ll fight again at the Pan-Am Games, most likely in Japan, kòm byen,” Davis added. “We have to win two rounds to qualify for the finals and for me to get my revenge. Cruz has a lot more International experience than I do. Li nan 26 years old and World Champion in our weight class.”

Davis started boxing when he was nine when, tired of Keyshawn and his two brothers fighting each other and in school, his mother asked if they wanted to go to the gym to learn how to box. They did and today, his older (Kelvin) and younger (Keon) brothers are also amateur boxers.

Not long after that he met Troy Isley, who is a fellow member of Team USA, and today they’re as close as brothers.

“I met Troy way back, after I first started boxing,” Davis remembered. “We’d meet up at the Nationals and other tournaments and hang together with my brothers. My coach retired, so I went to Troy’s gym (Alexandria, VA) and started working with Coach Kay (Koroma, USA Assistant National Boxing Coach). We’re getting close to our dream (representing the USA in the Olympics) that started so long ago that it seems unreal to be getting close. You can expect two boxers from Virginia to come back from Japan with gold medals. We’re like brothers.”

“Coach Kay first cornered me when I was 13. He’s a great coach who wants us to succeed in life, not just in the ring. He wants the best for us. We have one of the best U.S. boxing teams in a long time and it’s going to show in Japan. We always help each other out and this is a very exciting time for us right now.”

Another close friend of Keyshawn’s is, 2018 Olympic medaye ajan Shakur Stevenson, who has been through what Keyshawn is approaching, and is now at the level as a professional prospect in which Davis aspires to reach.

“Shakur has always supported me,” Davis continued. “We talk a lot. Onètman, it’s hard for me not to think about turning pro, because my amateur career will be over after the Olympics. I’ve always been taught to have a plan, so I’ve been preparing, business-wise, looking into my options (manager and promoter), and to stay on the right track from the amateurs to pros.”

If he wasn’t a boxer, Davis figures he’d be a realtor, but he’s thoroughly enjoying the life as a boxer.

“This has been a great experience,” Davis spoke about his amateur boxing career, “especially this year getting ready for the Pan AMs. I’ve had opportunities to travel and meet people, but the best part is being part of a team like this. Boxing is an individual sport but, deyò bag la, we’re always pushing hard for each other.

“I thank God every day when I get up for putting me in this position. All I want to do is provide for me and my family. At my age, I’m ahead of the game.”

Nakashima (8-0) has long been regarded as a special talent. Those prodigious abilities were finally realized by the masses when he was crowned LFA welterweight champion this past fall. His wrestling pedigree, shrewd striking ability, and willingness to learn every aspect of martial arts has made him the undefeated welterweight champion that he is today. The Illinois native and University of Nebraska wrestling standout has taken the 170-pound division by storm since making his professional MMA debut for RFA in 2015. He has defeated opponents that have a staggering combined record of 54-17 with half of those wins coming against undefeated fighters. Now sitting at 8-0 with the LFA welterweight title around his waist, Nakashima is eager to get back in the cage after healing up some injuries. The John Crouch protégé, who trains at The MMA LAB in Arizona, is once again eager to test himself against the best. That next challenge will come against fellow undefeated prospect and #1 contender Kyle Stewart.

 

 

 

Stewart (10-0) has been on a collision course with Nakashima since making his own professional MMA debut in 2015. The U.S. Marine Corps sergeant has amassed his own undefeated record, while training with Trevor Lally at Arizona Combat Sports just 30 minutes away from Nakashima. The decorated war veteran who saw action in Afghanistan, while serving multiple tours overseas, has successfully brought his combat skills to the cage where he is considered one of the top two welterweight prospects in the world. The other would be Nakashima, the man Stewart has long had his eye on since their careers began three years ago. The reality of them finally meeting in the Octagon became even more real when Stewart won his LFA debut last year. Held this past Saturday, Septanm 3, in Aguascalientes, Meksik, in association with promoter Bernie Valenzula of BBB Promotions, the ICBL Azteca Open featured 21 bouts with a considerable number of these fighters looking to earn a spot in the ICBL 2017 inaugural season.
In the night’s main event, a WBC Latino Silver Title eliminator, Ontario, California’s John “Bang Bang” Delperdang scored an eight-round majority decision over hometown favorite Oscar “Totti” Mejia.
Behind after the first three rounds, Delperdang (8-1, 7 Ko) eventually wore down Mejia (8-1-1, 3 Ko) with punishing blows to the body and head, leading to a cut above Mejia’s right eye. A Revolutionary Professional Boxing League Driven by Fan Influence and Open to Fighters Around the World
Virginia Beach, Virginia (Septanm 2, 2016) – The International Championship Boxing League (ICBL) is set to commence operations this month.
The ICBL is the world’s first competitive league for boxing. In this unique multi-weight-class league structure, boxers from around the world must “fight to win” in order to earn the league title.
Created to revolutionize the sport for fans and athletes, the ICBL will bring boxers from around the world to compete, gladiatorial style, in a relentless season of competition where fans influence the action. ICBL fans will be intensely involved, via the soon to be unveiled ICBL parallel judging platform.
“This has never been done before in boxing,” said ICBL Founder and CEO Jack Perone Fulton. “This is the new way the world will come to know the names of the greatest boxers alive, and anyone who thinks they can be one has a fighting chance.”
Over the next six months, fighters from select weight classes will be selected for the ICBL, based on criteria including career record, impressive performance in an ICBL Open Event, and fan demand. “Fans have a voice at the ICBL and the league’s structure gives promoters and managers an alternative for their athletes,” continued Fulton.
Anplis de sa, fighters with accomplished records can be awarded a “Franchise Tag” by simply logging on to www.icbleague.com and applying. Upon approval, the Franchise Tag allows a fighter to opt in, or opt out of the League at the beginning of each season depending on what immediate opportunities lie ahead for them. Franchise tags will be awarded to fighters based on their overall body of work.
Each ICBL season will feature four pre-determined weight classes, featuring eight international boxers, per class, in a single-elimination tournament format. The winner of each weight class will receive the League title for that class and the season ending points standing determines the pound for pound championship.
“Without question, a uniformed professional boxing league is what fighters and fans have wanted for years,” said Fulton.
2016 ICBL Open Bouts will be broadcast on PPV, CBS Espò Network, and foreign broadcast networks. Event highlights, fighter interviews and other behind-the-scenes content will be posted online at www.icbleague.com.
