Carl Frampton already was a world champion at the start of this year, but his accomplishments in 2016 placed him at the top of the entire boxing universe.
The 29-year-old native of Belfast, Irlanda del Nord, reached a level of success this year that most boxers could only dream about, traveling to two countries to win world titles in two weight divisions against a pair of undefeated champions-with the second victory coming in a Fight of the Year contender.
Reaching such heights made Carl Frampton (23-0, 14 KOs) an overwhelming unanimous decision by the staff of Premier Boxing Champions as PBC’s Fighter of the Year.
I’m in this game to win fights and to win titles,” Frampton said, “but when you’re picking up awards like Fighter of the Year when there are so many good fighters around, obviously it’s a huge achievement, and I’m very, very grateful.
Other fighters considered for the award were Jermall Charlo, Robert Pasqua Jr. i Keith Thurman. All three world champions had tremendous years of their own, but none achieved more in the squared circle in 2016 than Frampton.
“El Xacal” opened the year on Febrer 27 per taking on fellow 122-pound world champion Scott Quigg in a title unification bout on the Englishman’s home turf at Manchester Arena.
Although the bout took several rounds to heat up, the 5-foot-5 Frampton initiated most of the action as he worked effectively behind his jab and landed the cleaner punches throughout the fight.
Even though the highly anticipated contest took place just 15 miles from Quigg’s hometown of Bury, Lancashire, much of the sellout crowd of 21,000 voiced their support for Frampton, who broke Quigg’s jaw on his way to gaining a split decision just six days after his 29th birthday.
I’m absolutely delighted to have won. Over the moon,” Frampton said after two of the judges gave him a 116-112 edge and the third scored it 115-113 for Quigg. “The fight went very much to plan, and I thought I had won it by quite a distance. I’m really surprised one judge gave it to him.
Rather than defend his 122-pound titles, Frampton elected to relinquish them and move up in weight. Not only that, he immediately went after one of the best 126-pound fighters in the world, traveling to Brooklyn, Nova York, a Juliol 30, when he challenged unbeaten 126-pound world champion Leo Santa Cruz for his title at Barclays Center.
The bout was electrifying almost from the opening bell as both fighters attempted to press the action. A la segona ronda, Frampton sent Santa Cruz staggering backward into the ropes with a short left hook to the temple to gain the early edge.
Although he never did knock down the champion, Frampton continually beat Santa Cruz to the punch, landing perfectly placed counter shots as he fired from all angles to thwart the Mexican-American’s high-volume attack.
Frampton, who was competing for just the second time in the United States, won the Fight of the Year candidate by majority decision, earning winning scores of 117-111 i 116-112, while the third judge surprisingly had it even at 114-114.
The victory made Frampton just the second Irishman after Steve Collins to win world titles in two weight divisions, and the first from Northern Ireland.
Frampton now has a chance to get an early jump on 2017 Fighter of the Year honors with a rematch against Santa Cruz set for Gener 28 al MGM Grand Garden Arena a Las Vegas.
I never ever thought I would win a world title in two different weight divisions when I turned professional,” Frampton said.
The goal was to become world champion-and to win a second world title, it’s a bonus really. … 2016 couldn’t have went any better if I’m being honest.

FILADÈLFIA (Novembre 13, 2016) – Undefeated world champion Danny “Ràpid” García (33-0, 19 KOs)put on a show for fans in his hometown Saturday night as he dropped and stopped Colombia’s Samuel Vargas (25-3-1, 13 KOs)on his way to a seventh round TKO victory in the main event of Lliga de Campions de Boxa a Espiga from Temple University’s Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.
The dominant performance by Garcia officially setup a welterweight world championship unification showdown in March against Keith “Una Vegada” Thurman, who was in attendance as part of Spike’s broadcasting crew. The two welterweight world champions met in the middle of the ring after the conclusion of the bout and began to set the stage for their explosive showdown.
I just had to tell Keith that he’s next,” va dir García. “I’m going to beat him down. There’s not much more to say. Keith is going to get what he asked for and now he’s going to face a big dog.
You have two big punchers meeting on Març 4,” Said Thurman. “I don’t see how the fight can go 12 rondes. I see myself as the best competition that Danny has ever faced.
Garcia was sharp offensively and defensively Dissabte nit, making Vargas miss often and countering with powerful shots. He started slow but late in the second round, Garcia delivered an overhand right hand that sent Vargas tumbling to the canvas.
I felt a little rusty,” va dir García. “But I started putting my punches together well and came out with the victory. The overhand right knocked him down. It was just a well-timed shot.
I got beat up in there,” va dir Vargas. “It takes a lot of courage to come to North Philadelphia and fight the champ. It just wasn’t my night.
Vargas continued to come forward and work, but Garcia was entirely in control, making Vargas swing at air while delivering shots of his own that kept him in command. In the seventh round, Garcia began to unload with a series of big shots that hurt Vargas on the ropes. This eventually prompted referee Gary Rosato to stop the fight 2:17 a la ronda.
It was great to give back to my fans in Philadelphia,” va dir García. “It was a long time coming. I’m just happy I was able to give Philly a great night. I’m a Philly champion and it was great to see guys like Allen Iverson and Meek Mill out here supporting. Most importantly it felt great to give back to those in need in my city.
Danny is a great fighter and a great person for his city,” va dir Vargas.
With the Març 4 unification fight now set, boxing fans can look forward to seeing two of the best fighters in the sport put their undefeated records and world titles on the line.
Danny can talk whatever he wants and Angel Garcia can say whatever he wants,” Said Thurman. “They can talk smack all day. Danny is real flat-footed. I believe I’ll be able to be on the outside, see the wide punches and counter punch. They said he wanted the tune-up, now he’s ready to see me.
“En Març 4, fans can expect what they always get from me,” va dir García. “It’s going to be fireworks. I’m a Philly champion. I have the heart of a champion and I’m coming to win and unify titles.
The co-main event of the evening saw undefeated rising star Jarrett Hurd (19-0, 13 KOs) stop former title challenger Jo Jo Dan (35-4, 18 KOs)in the sixth-round of their super welterweight battle.
The smaller Dan sought to smother Hurd from the beginning and negate the previously unbeaten fighter’s advantage in reach and height. Hurd was unable to get full power behind his punches, while Dan tried to hit Hurd with short punches, mainly to the body.
We knew he was a crafty southpaw,” Said Hurd. “We wanted to take our time because we didn’t know how he would come out. We felt him out at first.
The weight was a big difference,” said Dan. “I took the fight on short notice and I’m a 147-pound fighter. He was too strong for me aquesta nit.”
Things began to open up for Hurd in round two as he began to tee off on the head of Dan, including a thudding left that caused Dan’s nose to bleed. Hurd continued to pummel Dan, mixing in looping shots to the body with his devastating array of hooks and uppercuts.
My defense was a little off because being prepared for a right hander,” Said Hurd. “We fixed that in the last round and got the stoppage.
The damage continued into the sixth round as Dan kept coming forward but was consistently met with hard shots from Hurd. The fight was finally called at 1:08 into the sixth round, on the advice of Dan’s corner.
He was wobbly and shaky,” Said Hurd. “I probably would have taken him out in the next round. There are a lot of great fighters in this division and whoever I can get in there with next, I’ll be ready for.
He’s a tough guy,” said Dan. “I gave him some tough shots and I took some good shots. At the end of the day this is boxing. I couldn’t do enough to get the win.
The opening bout of the telecast saw former world champion Javier Fortuna (31-1-1, 22 KOs) survive an early knockdown to come back and earn a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Omar Douglas (17-1, 12 KOs) in their 10-round lightweight match.
Douglas got off to the better start, connecting with a straight left hand late in the first round that buckled the knees of Fortuna and sent him to the canvas.
He got me cold in the first round,” va dir Fortuna. “I wasn’t surprised that he came out sharp. I worked very hard to come back.
The left hand was there for me so I took it,” said Douglas. “I knocked him down based on reflexes.
Fortuna recovered nicely however, and used his movement and combination punching to fluster the less experienced Douglas. Fighting primarily out of the southpaw stance, Fortuna used his jab and followed up with flurries that score consistently.
Every time that I was aggressive, I tried to follow it up with more punches,” va dir Fortuna.
Douglas tried to be patient and counter, but too often it led to the fighters getting tangled up instead of inflicting damage.
He was grabbing me, but that’s the gamesaid Douglas. “That’s the game I signed up for.
The final round saw Fortuna come out strong in an attempt to close the show with emphasis.
I knew in the final round that I had to finish it well to make sure there were no questions,” va dir Fortuna.
The former champion connected at will on Douglas for much of the round, staggering him near the ropes with successive hooks. Douglas stayed on his feet but was unable to mount enough offense as all three judges gave the final round to Fortuna. Al final, the judges scored the bout 96-93 dues vegades i 95-94 de Fortuna.
I feel like I won the fight. The decision was absurd. He held me the whole fight,” said Douglas.
I felt like I won just about every round after the first,” va dir Fortuna. “I want a rematch with Jason Sosa next. That’s a very big fight for me.

DANNY GARCIA
I’ve dedicated my life to the sport of boxing and I’m proud to be on a card like this. It’s amazing to be fighting in my city with my home base there to support me.
“Aquesta és una gran oportunitat per a mi. Giving back is very important to me and my family. I have my whole family, including my daughter Philly here with me. It just adds to the excitement leading up to the fight.
“El camp d'entrenament ha estat increïble. We had a really smooth camp. I’ve stayed disciplined and taken care of everything I have to do. I’ve been running and sparring and preparing for anything. I took no shortcuts.
I’m feeling good and I’m happy to bring my fans in Philadelphia a fight. I’m looking forward to bringing more fights back here to Philadelphia. This is a fighting city where it all started for a lot of great fighters.
I’m really excited about this undercard. I know the fans are going to really love it. I hope those fighters take full advantage of their opportunity to fight on a card like this.
I know people are excited about the Thurman fight. I understand that and I’m going to be pumped up for that one too. But I’m not looking past anybody. I’m fully focused on putting on a show at home and doing what I have to do to beat Vargas.
There’s not too much to say but I’m really excited to fight. I hope all the fans come out and see what they’ve been missing in Philly. Vaig pel nocaut.”
SAMUEL VARGAS
I had four weeks of intense training in Miami. We were at the Fifth Street Gym and they made us feel at home. I got great sparring and I feel ready to fight.
This is a fight that I have to be 100 per cent a punt per. I have to mentally be prepared for battle. Then I just have to execute the plan.
Danny is a champion for a reason. He does everything well. We just have to find a way to win.
“El meu entrenador, Billy Briscoe, has done an amazing job of working with me and keeping me motivated. It’s been a really good camp.
I’m looking for the upset that night. Everyone wants to see Danny fight Keith Thurman, but I’m looking to make myself known. I feel confident.
All I have to do is go up there and do my job. No t'ho perdis, because it’s going to be a memorable one.
I have to dictate the pace of the fight if I want to win in Philadelphia. I have to win decisively. I have to be a smart fighter and I’ll be ready.
JARRETT HURD
I’m trying to let everyone know I’m here. I’m here for everyone in the 154-pound division and I’m here to stay. I’m not a guy who’s just going to work my way up but not win a title. My goal is to win a world title.
It feels really good to be on a Danny Garcia card. We’re both ‘Swiftso I’m glad fans will have a chance to see two really entertaining fighters on the same card.
The opponent switch didn’t leave us a lot of time to prepare for a southpaw, but we’re used to the style. Training camp was really great and I’m just excited to get in the ring.
I really want to thank my trainer, Ernesto Rodriguez, because he’s been with me since day one. We always talked about fighting on cards like this.
A fight of this magnitude it’s always a good thing. I’m happy to fight on a card of this magnitude. I hope that everyone enjoys the show en dissabte nit.
All-year round we prepare for changes like this. Sometimes you get an opponent who is orthodox but he comes out southpaw. We’re always prepared for things like this.
JO JO DAN
I’m thankful to Hurd for accepting this challenge. I’m looking to make a great fight. I’m in great shape and I have no doubt this is going to be an exciting night.
Hurd is a great fighter. He has an undefeated record and he’s younger than me, but I’m not worried about it. He likes to fight and switch styles. So I know I will have to be ready for anything.
My training camp was very good. There are no injuries and I’m very thankful to be healthy. I’ve been in the gym a very long time.
I have a good strategy for this fight. I’m planning on getting in there and testing him out. I think I’m going to have a really good performance.
When I got the call about this fight I was already in really good shape. I expect it’s going to be an exciting fight for the fans.
My original weight is still 147-pounds, but this is a great opportunity and I jumped on it. I believe I’m ready to make a splash.
JAVIER FORTUNA
I promise you that this fight will not go 10 rondes. I’m telling everybody. I’m going to knockout Omar Douglas.
My team works so hard and we’re not going to stop until I’m a champion again. Douglas is the next guy I need to get rid of.
I’m very honored to be a part of a card of this magnitude, especially with one of the best fighters in the world in Danny Garcia.
I’m coming to fight Douglas on his turf and I’m going to give him a boxing lesson. I’m prepared and I’m ready to go on Novembre 12.
I’m confident in myself and confident in my team. We’ve prepared extremely well. My goal is to continue to get back to where I was. I want to be a champion once again.
ÀNGEL GARCÍA, Pare de Danny & Entrenador
“Danny és 100 cent preparat. Camp went perfectly. He’s hitting hard. I just pray every day that he doesn’t kill anybody in the ring. These aren’t the ‘Looney Tunes. This is real right now. Vargas is in with the champ of the world.
We’re going to worry about Sam en dissabte. We’re going to get the job done. Because I know what Danny brings to the table.
I think Danny is the top welterweight in the world. Danny is going to be undefeated, still, després Novembre 12. Sam is going to come in and work. But it’s not going his way.
BILLY BRISCOE, Vargas’ Entrenador
We went to camp and we prepared to the best of our abilities. Sam knew what he had to do and he took care of everything that he could.
There’s not too much to say. We understand that we’re fighting a great fighter like Danny. He’s a tremendous fighter and he has great trainer in Angel.
We’re going to be ready. Sam has put in the hours in the gym that are necessary. We’re looking for a good show and a big shock.

The former champion Fortuna and the unbeaten Douglas will meet in a 50-50 fight that could put the winner in a position to fight for a world title soon. Fortuna is known for his aggressive style while Douglas looks to impress against his toughest opponent to date.
Això és el que els combatents havien de dir sobre el camp d'entrenament, each other and more:
How has training camp gone for this fight?
Javier Fortuna: I’m having an excellent training camp. We’re working hard and figuring out how to break down my opponent. Hector Bermudez does a great job and I’m very comfortable training here in Boston. I’ve gotten great sparring with guys like Will Madero and Alden Whatley. I’m going to be just as strong in the final round as I was in the first.
Omar Douglas: “L'entrenament ha anat molt bé. I was already working and staying sharp, because I knew a big fight was on the horizon. Training in Delaware with Douglas Petitford has been great for me and I’ve had incredible sparring. I’ve been in there getting rounds with (2016 U.S. Olímpic) Gary Antuanne Russell and a veteran in Hank Lundy.
What do you think of your opponent and how do you see this fight going stylistically?
JF: “Douglas is a prospect who has looked pretty good coming up. He wants to get to where I’ve been. He might be looking past me. I think that his style fits my style perfectly. I’m going to have openings and I just need to take advantage.
OD: Fortuna is a very decent and explosive fighter. He’s a former world champion and I expect him to stand up and get back what he thinks is his. He wants his rematch with Sosa and we are in each other’s way. He’s a frontrunner in the ring. He will try to start strong and I am prepared for whatever he brings to the table. Whether he boxes or fights me. I will make adjustments.
What kind of problems does your opponent pose?
JF: The only problem that he will pose is if he doesn’t show up and fight. I’m ready for anything he can bring, so I hope he’s ready to give the fans a show.
OD: He moves well. I can’t let myself get off-balanced trying to chase him. He’s awkward but I know that my jab will neutralize his strengths.
What are you looking for in the future if you can get the win on November 12? What are your goals for 2017?
JF: I want to fight the best out there. My first choice is a rematch with Jason Sosa so that I can win my belt back. I’d love to fight Vasyl Lomachenko. I don’t think he’s fought a guy quite like me yet.
OD: I want to fight for a world title. That’s the goal. He is a former champion who just lost his title and 2017 is my year to make a run for a title.
How have you improved as a fighter since your loss? Do you believe a win over Douglas proves you’re still one of the best in the division?
JF: I have learned a lot of things since I lost. My defense and my confidence in myself has improved. If I can beat a guy who is 22-0 and make it two wins over previously unbeaten fighters, then I think I’m right back in contention. He’s still considered a prospect so I think whoever wins will be a contender at the top of the division.
How does fighting in Philadelphia motivate you, having fought there in the amateurs and being from nearby Delaware?
OD: In the amateurs I was one of the only guys from Delaware. I had a lot of obstacles. I’ve been fighting against Philly’s best fighters for years. Philadelphia is where I achieved my first goals in the sport and it will always be special to me to fight in Philly.
Why do you believe you’ll be victorious on fight night?
JF: With the work that I’ve been putting in, I know that I will be ready on fight night. I’ve been through too much not to leave the ring victorious.
OD: I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life and I believe I am the hungrier fighter. He doesn’t want it as badly as I do. I’ve been waiting in the shadows for a long time. I have all the skills necessary to get the job done.

Plant gave a training camp update and talked about his upcoming bout and more:
On fighting in his first 10-round main event on FS1
This is a big opportunity for me to show the fans that I have arrived. FS1 is seen by millions around the word and I’m ready to make a statement to a national audience. I’ve been working hard to get to this point and I’m going to shine.
On his matchup with Juan De Angel...
Like all fights at this level, it’s going to be a tough fight. I’m expecting to see a hungry fighter who has nothing to lose. I myself have everything to lose so I’m going to make sure I’m at my best when we step in the ring. De Angel has held some regional belts so I know he has some tricks up his sleeve. One thing I will do is dictate the pace.
On the landscape of the middleweight division
The middleweight division has plenty of talent. Gennady Golovkin has a stranglehold on the division at the moment but I’m gunning for him and anyone else that’s in my way. First I have to get past this fight and then continue my march toward that world title.
On his recent training camp
My team and I have been working extremely hard. I’ve got all the right people in my corner helping me get to the top. I’m sparring with some really good fighters. I’ve taken my conditioning to new levels. My body is fresh and I’m amped up for this fight.
On his quest to become the first world champion to come out of Nashville, TN…
To become the first world champion to come out of Tennessee would be incredible. I know I have a lot of hard work that needs to be done but I’m ready for the difficult challenge. Nashville needs a boxing champion and I know in my heart that it will happen. I’m just taking it one fight at a time.

Spence Jr. and Bundu spoke to media at Via Della Pace in downtown Manhattan before they visited Coney Island for photo-ops ahead of their Diumenge bout in the Brooklyn venue. Això és el que els participants havien de dir Dijous:
ERROL SPENCE JR.
This has been a long camp. I’m in great shape and I’ve had strong sparring partners throughout. Bundu is a very good fighter. He’s experienced and technically sound, but he can be awkward.
I’m happy to be back in New York. I think it’s going to be a good fight and I’m looking to put on a spectacular performance.
We went up the rankings trying to find an opponent. A lot of guys didn’t want to fight me, even in a title eliminator. So I want to thank Bundu for taking the fight.
I’m not worried about what’s going to happen next. I know what’s next if I take care of my business. If I win I’m guaranteed a chance at the world title. I want the title fight sooner rather than later.
We try to break down an opponent’s weakness in camp. But we’re also looking at what they do right. We have to capitalize on everything. My trainer will watch the video and talk about what he sees. It’s a lot of communication in the gym.
I love sparring with younger guys. Preferably amateurs or guys who just turned pro. They have more to prove in a sparring session. They really push me and help make me better.
My main goal is to win. The only thing I have to do, is win. Si el nocaut ve, M'ho porto. But I’m not going to force it. He’s a tough and durable fighter. It has to be setup and it has to be calculated.
LEONARD BUNDU
“Spence Jr. és un bon boxejador. He’s probably my toughest fight to date. These kind of fights make me more motivated.
I have nothing to lose. I’m going to give it all I have and I’m very confident in myself. I believe I can be victorious.
“Spence Jr. and Thurman have some similarities but also are completely different fighters. I have studied Spence and I believe I will have an even better chance against Spence Jr..
I’m always trying new workouts and trying to improve my training. I’m in tremendous shape and I know it will help carry me in the ring.
I thought my performance was okay against Thurman. There was definitely room to improve and I think I’m an even better fighter now than I was then. I feel like I was 10 fa anys que. I’m like wine, I’m truly getting better with age.
I see his weaknesses and I have to take advantage of them. I believe I can put him in trouble with my countering but it all has to come together in the ring.
I love the challenge. I want to give him his first loss. That’s what I have to do. That’s all that is in my head.
Lou DiBella, El president de DiBella Entertainment
Everyone should come out to Coney Island diumenge afternoon to see what’s going to be an incredible day and early evening of boxing. The fights start at 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon and is fully covered, so there will be no weather issue. It’s a beautiful new facility with an incredible view.
This is the first boxing broadcast that will be nationally televised from Coney Island. In my mind we have one of the best young fighters in the world defending his standing against a guy who has had a long and successful career. Both Spence Jr. and Bundu were Olympians and it will be a real test for Errol.
There’s no question Errol is the favorite while Bundu is the underdog, but he’s been the underdog before. He knows he has to win and that this could be his last chance on a big stage.
I’ve promoted a lot of fighters throughout the years and there wasn’t a better fighter from the last Olympic class or this one that is better than Errol Spence Jr. In terms of ability, talent and instincts he’s world class. He fights with much more intelligence than his ring age. He’s a master of controlling the ring. When I watch this kid fight I’m always blown away.
On Sunday Spence Jr. is fighting a real professional and he has a chance to prove something on national television. This is a great forum for him to follow the Olympic Gold medal basketball game. The kind of audience that is going to watch the Gold medal game are the kind of people that we need to bring into boxing. I’m proud to promote this show.

BROOKLYN (Agost 15, 2016) -El invicte estrella en ascens Errol “La Veritat” Spence Jr.is leaning on his experience as part of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team as he nears a world title eliminator on network television and eventually a world title shot.
People ask if I’m nervous about headlining big fights, but I’ve already fought on the biggest stage you can fight on at the Olympics,” va dir Spence Jr. “I was fighting in front of the whole world and it got me ready for where I’m at today.
The 26-year-old will take on once-beaten Italian contender Leonard “El Lleó” Bundu in a welterweight world title eliminator that headlines Lliga de Campions de Boxa a NBC Diumenge, Agost 21 from Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn.
Televised coverage begins on NBC at 5 p.m. I/2 p.m. PT following the Olympic Men’s Basketball Gold Medal Game. For Spence Jr., it was the experience of being around world class athletes such as the members of the USA Men’s Basketball team that he remembers most vividly about his time in London.
I’ll never forget meeting all of the athletes that I had grown up watching,” va dir Spence Jr. “I got to meet Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, the Williams sisters and Usain Bolt. Just being able to talk to them and be around them was amazing. I was an Olympian just like them.
It was a big moment for me when people like that would recognize me and tell me they were going to come watch me fight. That’s something I’ll always remember.
While Spence Jr. had the best run of any of the men on the 2012 U.S. equip, he came up short of his goal of bringing home a medal for his country. Despite that, Spence Jr. wouldn’t change anything about his 2012 experiència.
I feel like everything happens for a reason,” va dir Spence Jr. “If I go back and change something, it might change something in my future. So far my future is looking great right now. I’m one of the top fighters in the game and everything that happened in the Olympics led to that.
Four years removed from his time in the Olympic Village, Spence Jr. is ready to make his mark as a pro, but will still have an eye on the new crop of talent that is currently competing in Rio.
I would tell the Olympians to stay focused no matter what happens,” va dir Spence Jr. “Work with what you have there, listen to your coaches and stay 100 percent dedicated. You got this far, so why slack now?
I wish them the best of luck and I think we definitely have some gold medal hopefuls like Shakur Stevenson and Claressa Shields. They’re going to come home with gold and it’s going to be big for U.S boxing.
