GLOVER VACATES; A NEW LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION TO BE CROWNED AT NEF 25

It was a bitterly cold night in Lewiston last February when Ryan Glover (3-1) won the New England Fights (NEF) blandad martial-arts (MMA) amateur light-heavyweight title. The months to come would see Glover accept a new job that would take him up and down the East Coast. With little time to train to defend the title, and in the interest of doing right by the division, Glover recently made the difficult decision to relinquish the championship.

 

NEF executives were quick to act. Tidigare idag, the fight promotion announced that Victor Irwin (2-0) would meet Nick Shea (2-0) to fill the vacancy. The two undefeated athletes are scheduled to face-off to determine a new light-heavyweight champion at “NEF 25: HEROES & VILLAINS” påSeptember 10, 2016 i Lewiston.

 

Irwin was a standout wrestler at Brewer High School in Brewer, Maine at 195-pounds where he was a Class-A state champion. His love for the sport is so strong that when Irwin attended Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) and learned the school did not have a wrestling program, he created one himself. As a college freshman in 2014 Irwin went to Nationals and achieved All-American status. He currently trains out of Young’s MMA in Bangor, Maine.

 

“I’ve thought a lot about this fight and I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter what I say,” said Irwin, “it matters what I do, and come September 10thyou’re gonna see some serious doing.”

 

2015 was a great start to the MMA career of Nick Shea. In February of that year, he won his debut fight over the much more experienced Jacob Cameron (1-5) via första omgången teknisk knockout. Later in the year, Shea would go on to defeat Ruben Redman (0-1) by decision in a hard-fought contest. It would earn Shea a nomination for the “Rookie of the Year” i 2015 NEF Year-End Awards. På September 10 i Lewiston, Shea will attempt to become the first member of the First Class MMA fight team to capture gold in the NEF cage.

 

“It’s an honor to fight someone from Young’s MMA,” said Shea. “I believe this will be my biggest test in the cage to date. I’m grateful and excited to compete for the amateur light heavyweight title. Victor and I will put on an exciting fight on Lördag, September 10th!”

Lewiston, Maine (September 3, 2015) - New England Fights (NEF), USA: s nummer ett regionalt kamp främjande, kommer att hålla sin nittonde bland martial-arts (MMA) händelse, “NEF XIX,” på lördag, September 12, 2015 på Androscoggin Bank Colisée i Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature three members of First Class MMA in action that night. Hannah Sparrell (0-0), Rafael Velado (0-0) och Nick Shea (1-0) från Brunswick, Maine-based gym. Nyligen, First Class MMA grundare och huvudtränare John “Första klass” Ray anslöt NEF delägare och matchmaker Matt Peterson som gäst på NEF Podcast.

 

Det gångna juni, 38-year-old Raio retired after competing in the NEF cage for some three-and-a-half years. Raio now concentrates on training the members of his First Class MMA gym, inklusive framställning Sparrell, Velado och Shea för sina kommande matcher.

 

“Jag kan definitivt sätta mycket mer tid i mina soldater liksom min familj,” Said Ray. “De kämpar, I can put a lot more time into them because it’s not all about me. “Den största sak jag gillar med vår gym, Jag tycker om att gå och vara en del av, är att det finns en mycket ödmjuk grupp studenter och lärare,” noted Raio. “Everyone who teaches in there is about the fighters. It’s about the students. They’re not about themselves. They’re more about trying to help people get better. Whether they’re a fighter or a teacher, we have a few teachers who go there and we have several women students and several children and adults. It’s a real good mix and very much a family atmosphere. We rarely lose a student.”

 

Den “Första klass” moniker is not merely a nickname given to Raio because of his past job with the postal service. Early on in his MMA career, RAIO förtjänat det anseende som en respektfull, flott, professionell, sympatisk individ, hence the pun in his nickname. Those same qualities have carried over to the students of First Class MMA.

 

“Jag försöker att behandla alla lika,” Said Ray. “I try to treat everyone respectfully. I think a lot of those guys (på gymmet), i sin tur, treat each other respectfully. If I ever have an issue with a student, om de inte agerar respektfullt till instruktörer eller de andra studenterna, I’ll pull them aside and if they have to leave then they have to leave. Med fler och fler nya studenter som kommer genom hans gym dörr, Raio has definitely kept busy since his retirement from active competition. Like a proud father, Raio has a real passion for the success of his students. The ultimate reward for him is seeing his protégées do well in the cage.

 

“Efter den sista föreställningen (NEF XVIII), när jag såg Nick (Gulliver, 1-0) har hans arm och Rob (Robinson, 1-0), Jag var så glad för dessa killar,” recalled Raio. “I’m so happy to see these two guys win. As much as I didn’t come away with a win against Bruce (Boyington, 10-8), Jag sa "om vi går 2-1, I’d rather be the one that didn’t pull off the victory.’ I’ve never been as happy for my own win than I was for Nick and Rob that night.”
