Bill Verigan.jpg
Bill Verigan: “Whether a boxer is in the Hall of Fame or not, yo tren difisil, compete hard and have overcome hard losses. Mwen trè, very thankful to be here today. Thank you so much.”
Shannon Briggs.jpg
(L-R) – Dave Diamante, Henry Hascup, Shannon Briggs, Bob Duffy & Tommy Gallagher

Shannon Briggs: “Let’s go champ! Let’s go champ. Let’s go champ. This is amazing. I grew up in Brooklyn and lived in Brownsville. I weighed less than 2 pounds when I was born and asthmatic. I was bullied growing up in Brownsville, but I made it. We lost our home. Tough times growing up. I had to fight. I can’t believe I’m in the Hall of Fame. My aunt said, ‘We going to make it.’ She’s here today.

“I fell into boxing. I was never into sports. I can’t catch and still can’t dribble. But when I put gloves on, something about me changed, and nobody could do anything to me. No more bullying. I went from sleeping on the train or in the gym to traveling around the world. Nobody believed in me until Vito Antuofermo said, ‘This kid can be something.’ I just turned 50 and I’m up here with Vito. I won the Golden Gloves when I was homeless. This is all unexpected. I never though I’d be a boxer. I put gloves on and got busy. I started winning. Boxing helped me stay out of jail, selling drugs, or running the streets. I became heavyweight champion of the world. Shout out to everybody who believed in me. A lot are here today. Mèsi poutèt ou, mesye. Let’s go champ!"
John Turner.jpg
(L-R) – Jack Hirsch & John Turner

Johnny Turner: I want to thank everyone for having me here today. I want to thank my trainers and Joe DeGuardia for believing in me. My most prestigious fight was with Wilfredo Benitez, and I was in the move, ‘Raging Bull.’ I’m a very lucky guy.”
Barnes.jpg
(L-R) – Diamante, Ryan O’Leary, Larry Barnes, Melvina Lathan & Bob Duffy

Larry Barnes: “I’m going to be short; I can’t match Shannon. Let’s go champ! I’m very excited to be here with all these champions. I want to thank all the people in boxing for believing in me. Mwen pa janm te moute. Most of all, I want to thank me for putting in all the hard work.”
Bentt.jpg
(L-R) – Dave Diamante, Michael Bentt, Bobby Cassidy, Jr. & Bob Duffy

Michael Bentt: “It’s wonderful to be back in New York. I didn’t get here by myself. I want to thank four groups: my mentors, sponsors and facilitators, boxers who inspired me, and my allies. I was captain of the USA Boxing Team and got a call to be in the movie ‘Ali’ (he played Sonny Liston). Young people should seek people like those who inspired me: Muhammad Ali, Mark Breland, Mike McCallum, Shannon Briggs, Evandè Olifil, Ronald Turner and Monte Barrett. They fueled my flame.”
Diamond.jpg
(L-R) – Jill Diamond & JoAnn Aquilera

Jill Diamond: “I want to thank my two biggest mentors, Jose Suliaman and Joe Dwyer. I’d like to thank my New York family who still think I go to the Golden Globes instead of the Golden Gloves. And thanks to my WBC family that embraced me, especially Mauricio Suliaman, who said to come join us. I do know that in the big boxing family, if anybody hurt somebody, they would always help. I wish, especially with what’s going on today, others settled things in the ring like us. The world would be a better place.”
Mike Silver.jpg
(L-R) – Dave Diamante, Mike Silver, Bobby Cassidy, Jr. & Bob Duffy

Mike Silver: “I’m very humbled and appreciative to the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame selection committee to receive this honor. It’s so gratifying coming from peers. Boxing is the most colorful sport. In my books I give my perception to be informative, educational, and entertaining. I used to check newsstands for the new Ring magazine and Boxing News. I respected boxers and fell in love with the sport. One thing will never change in boxing. In the ring it’s about hitting without getting hit, the science of the sport. Boxers’ stories are not written. It takes their blood, sweat and tears. And that will never change.”
Don Elbaum.jpg
(L-R) – Don & Kipp Elbaum

Don Elbaum: “I’m honored and thankful by this. What a run it’s been running shows. I’m still doing it. I remember putting shows on at Madison Square Garden. No sport has 1-on-1 world champions like boxing. Many countries have kings, but there is only one in boxing, and that’s the world heavyweight champion.”
Donny Lolonde.jpg
(L-R) – Tommy Gallagher, Donny Lalonde & Bobby Cassidy, Jr.

Donny Lalonde: “I would be here without Bobby Cassidy. Bobby Cassidy, Sr. was the number one light heavyweight in the world. He was also a trainer who taught me what it took to be a boxer. Koulye a,, I’m in the New York Hall of Fame with him and his son, Bobby Cassidy, Jr. I was from Canada, and I was told that being a champion from there was worthless. When you grow up in a broken home, you really need somebody to believe in you. Don Majeski believed in me. Tommy Gallagher and Bobby Cassidy made my spirit rise high. I was ready to take on the world. Everybody said I had no business being in the wring with Eddie Davis, after he went 15 rounds with Michael Spinks. I knocked him out 22 seconds into the second round to win the world title. Thanks to the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame for having me here.”
Verderosa.jpg
(L-R – John & Wiliam Verderosa

John Verderosa: “I appreciate the accolades. This is fantastic. Forty years later, it blows my mind that people remember me from so long ago. I’m so honored. Thank you so much.”
Phillips.jpg

(L-R) – Dave Diamante, Henry Hascup, Verno Phillips and his son K.J. Phillips, & Bob Duffy

Verno Phillips: “New York Hall of Fame, ti bebe. I made it! I put in the work. Like my grandmother said, ‘You got to go out and run.’”

New York State Boxing HOF & Ring 8 establish fund to assist boxers and boxing personnel in New York

NEW YORK (Avril 1, 2020) – The New York State Boxing Hall of Fame (NYSBHOF) and Ring 8 jointly announced today a partnership to establish a COVID-19 fund to assist New York and New Jersey boxers and boxing personnel who are in financial need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Any boxing personnel (bokseur, fòmatè, cut-men, elatriye) who are independent contractors and live in New York or New Jersey may apply for monetary assistance by filling out a request form posted atwww.NYBoxingHOF.org akwww.Ring8tv,ak, or request a form atfightpublicist@gmail.com to be directly emailed.

All applicants must be licensed (NYSAC, NJSAC or USA Boxing) and forms must be submitted to NYSBHOF president Bob Duffy by email (depcomish@aol.com) or call him (1.516.313.2304) with the required information.

“Gyms are closed, and boxing has been suspended indefinitely,” NYSBHOF president Bob Duffy said. “Most boxing trainers, cut-men and other boxing personnel are independent contractors, so they do not have any income right now during this pandemic. They have families to support, rent to pay, food to put on the table, and other critical expenses. We want to help them by establishing this fund. We’re not in the position to give each applicant a large stipend,  but we are able to provide a small payment to temporarily help them a little bit. We’re committed to doing this for the month of April, at the very least, and then we’ll will revisit extending payments until boxing returns, as long as there is money available in this fund. It’s the right thing to do!"

“Ring 8 is furthering our goals to assist boxers and boxing people in New York during this crisis,” Ring 8 president Charlie Norkus, Jr. added. “It has been our mission since the very beginning. We are pleased to join the New York Boxing Hall of Fame in this endeavor.”

NEW YORK (Mas 5, 2020) – World heavyweight title challenger and two-time New York Golden Gloves champion Lou Savarese (46-7, 38 Ko) is living the dream, menm jan yo di, preparing for his upcoming induction into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame (NYSBHOF).

I have nothing but the upmost respect and admiration for this year’s Hall of Fame honoree, Lou Savarese,” NYSBHOF president Bob Duffy di. “I couldn’t be happier for this man who has given boxing his all, nan ak soti nan bag la. His friends and family know that this honor is well deserved.

Savarese was a local favorite, born in the Bronx and from Greenwood Lake, who was a two-time New England Golden Gloves champion having fought at the famed Madison Square Garden.

This is truly amazing,” Savarese spoke about being inducted into the NYSBHOF. “I’m a New York boxing historian, going back to the 1920’s of New York boxing history. It’s so nice to have fought in the best place, New York, the epicenter of boxing.

Savarese turned pro April 30, 1989, frape pi rèd toujou soti James Smith in the fourth round of their fight in Houston. Savarese went on to win his first won his first 36 pro batay, highlighted by his 36th by a seventh-round technical knockout victory of Buster Mathis, Jr. for the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA) pwa loud tit. It also set up a high profile 1997 konfwontasyon ak George Foreman nan Atlantic City, when Savarese lost a 12-round split decision (114-113, 112-115, 110-118) for the vacant World Boxing Union (WBU) championship.

Savarese says his opening-round knockout of former world heavyweight champion James “Buster” Douglas nan 1998 for the International Boxing Association World heavyweight title is his greatest accomplishment in the ring.

I was a big underdog in the Douglas fight,” Savarese remembered. “He had a good jab. That’s No. 1f or me. Winning my first New York Golden Gloves title (1985 lè li te kanpeJonathan Hill in the finals) in front of my fans, family and friends was my amateur highlight.

In addition to the aforementioned IBA World, Savarese also won the WBO Inter-Continental, and IBA Continental championships.

Beside former world champions Douglas and Witherspoon, as well as Mathis Jr., Savarese also defeated world-class heavyweights such as David Bostice, Lance Whitaker and Leo Nolan.
This is special. I know most of the guys going in and it’s an honor to be amongst them. I fought six world champions (Evandè Olifil, Mike Tyson, Foreman, Witherspoon, Douglas, ak Riddick Bowe nan amater yo. Max Kellerman (fellow NYSBHOF Class of 2020 inductee) once said I’m from the old-school of boxing. That’s good, I love that.

Koulye a, 54, Savarese lives in Houston, Texas, where he runs Savarese Promotions, as well as two gyms, in which he trains white-collar boxers. “It’s going to be fun seeing family and friends from back since I first started in boxing,” Savarese concluded. “A ton of people are coming (to the induction dinner), including some from Houston. I turned pro there in 1990, moved back to New York between 2000-2008, and have lived in Houston since then.

But Lou Savarese will always embody what it is to be a New York boxer.

Dick DiVeronica embodies spirit of New York State Boxing Hall of Fame

Induction Dinner This Sunday, Avril 28

Don wa, Jimmy Cannon, Jimmy Carter & Wilfredo Benitez headline Class of 2019 inductees

NEW YORK (Avril 22, 2019) –              , New York welterweight Dick DiVeronica embodies the true spirit of the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame: New Yorkers honoring New Yorkers for their accomplishments and achievements in boxing.

DiVeronica will be part of a 24-member Class of 2019 inducted at the eighth annual NYSBHOF induction dinner this Sunday afternoon (12:30-5:30 p.m. AK), nan Russo nan Bay sou la nan Howard Beach, New York.

This is what the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame is about, honoring and remembering men and women who devoted their time and energy to our beloved sports,” NYSBHOF president Bob Duffy di. “We thank all of them and their families for sharing these special people with us.

Limited tickets are still available, pwi a $125.00 pou chak granmoun ak $60.00 pou timoun (anba 16), epi yo genyen ladan yon kolasyon ki konplè epi ki bwason lè sou antre, kòmanse nan 12:30 p.m. AK, osi byen ke dine (pwemye kòt, pwason oswa bèt volay) epi yo louvri ba pandan tout jounen an. Tickets are available to purchase by contacting Duffy at 516.313.2304 oswa depcomish@aol.com. Ale sou Entènèt nan www.Ring8ny.com pou plis enfòmasyon sou Eta New York boksè Hall nan rnome.

DiVeronica fought professionally between 1958-1972, konpile yon 44-31-1 (13 Ko) record as a welterweight contender. He was stopped only twice in 58 pro batay, once by NYSBHOF charter (2012) inductee Emile Griffith.

This wasn’t expected (NYSBHOF induction) and we’re all super excited,” DiVeronica’s daughter Theresa commented. “We live in the same town as the International Boxing Hall of Fame, but my father will never be inducted into that Hall of Fame because he was never a world champion, only a contender. Billy Backus (undisputed world welterweight champion in 1971-72) is from Canastota, twò. He and my father never fought because they didn’t want the hometown fighter losing. My father was a humble guy and we’re so happy to have him recognized by the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame.

DiVeronica will now join Backus, who was a member of the Class of 2014, in the NYSBHOF. Boxing was incredibly important in DiVeronica life in and out of the ring. He started a boxing club in Germany while stationed there in the U.S. Lame. He even met his wife at the famed 5th St. Gym in Miami. Dick was staying there at the home of a relative, right next door to where his future wife lived. One day he asked her out and eventually they were married and starting a family back in Canastota.
