Top U.S. Men’s and women’s wrestlers expected to compete in ‘Grapple at the Garden,’


11º annual fundraiser to help raise money for youth non-profit Beat the Streets


NEW YORK– One of the highlights on the annual amateur wrestling calendar returns for the 11º straight year as Beat the Streets Wrestling (BTS), the largest grassroots inner city wrestling program in the United States, and USA Wrestling today announced that the annual BTS benefit will be held on Thursday, Maig 28. The thrilling night of wrestling, dubbed “Grapple at the Garden,” will again be held at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden after making a highly successful, sold-out debut there in 2019 following nearly a decade at various other iconic New York City venues.


The bouts will again be followed by the annual Benefit Celebration, which recognizes not only the elite athletes who compete at the event but also the BTS standout youth wrestlers who epitomize the work that the not-for-profit organization does year-round. Expected to compete are BTS wrestlers along with a national high school All-Star match-up, NCAA Champions and international Olympic men and women, and potentially mixed martial arts athletes who began as wrestlers.


Ticket information as well as the athletes, matchups, schedule and broadcast details will be announced at a later date.


“We couldn’t have been more pleased with the response to our first year at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden,” said Beat the Streets Executive Director Brendan Buckley. “The sold-out crowd brought a non-stop energy, fueled by world-class wrestling action from top to bottom. We expect it will be an even hotter ticket this year with the Tokyo Olympics on the horizon.”

NOVA YORK, Maig 13, 2019-The excitement of a night of world-class wrestling at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, in which a sold-out, record-breaking crowd of 5,000 was treated to 13 electrifying matches, spilled over into the post-event Beat the Streets Benefit Celebration at The Wilson on Monday. And while the victories by Olympic champions Jordan Burroughs (2012, or), Kyle Snyder (2016, or) i J’den Cox (2016, bronze) and local favorites like Nick Suriano (Rutgers University) i James Green (Willingboro, N. J.) stole the show on the mat during “Grapple at the Garden,” it was the Beat the Streets youth wrestlers who were the real winners, com $1.3 million was raised for this worthy not-for-profit in support of programs which empower young people in New York City through the great sport of wrestling.

NEW YORK–Kyle Snyder, who won gold at 97 kg the 2016 Olympics in Rio, will battle Canada’s Nishan Randhawa at the “Grapple at the Garden” Beat the Streets (BTS) benefit, Maig 6 at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. The addition of the superstar and longtime BTS supporter plus a matchup between two-time National Champion Yianni Diakomahlis (Rochester, N.Y.) i Bajrang Punia (Índia) increases the current number of scheduled matches to eight.


Snyder, of Woodbine, Md., a three-time NCAA Champion at Ohio State, will battle Randhawa at 97 kg. The youngest Olympic gold medalist and youngest world champion in U.S. wrestling history (he was 20 at the time of the Rio victory), Snyder also took gold at the 2015 i 2017 World Championships and silver last year in Budapest. Last month he continued his dominance with a clean sweep at the Dave Kolov International to win gold. Randhawa, from Abbotsford, Colòmbia Britànica, competes for Simon Fraser Univ. in B.C. and is a Canadian junior and senior freestyle champion.


Diakomahlis completed his second season at Cornell with his second straight national championship at 141 lliures., and now owns a mark of 66-1 with the Big Red, Incloent 47 victòries consecutives. A four-time N.Y. state high school champion at Hilton H.S., Diakomahlis is a two-time Ivy League and EIWA Wrestler of the Year and a unanimous All-Ivy pick.


Bajrang, a frequent medalist in the World Championships, Jocs Asiàtics, Commonwealth Games and other international championships since 2013, last November achieved the No. 1 ranking in the world at 65kg. Bajrang won five medals in all in 2018, including the historic first gold medal for India in the Asian Games, besting Daichi Takataniof Japan in the final.

Merkin ha deixat la seva empremta a Poly Prep Country Day School en convertir-se en quatre vegades campió de l'escola privada de Nova York. Wurmbrand ha fet una bona feina mantenint un equip important en una escola petita i espera futurs canvis ara que pot començar a entrenar estudiants-esportistes més joves a l'escola primària..

Entrenador adjunt de l'any de secundària: Antoni Mirra, Tottenville High School, Staten Island
Mirra ha participat activament en el programa de lluita lliure de Tottenville des que ell mateix era estudiant-atleta.. Admet que l'esport ajuda a fer els nens més durs mentalment, emocional i físicament. Com a entrenador lleuger, Mirra ha ajudat a produir almenys un campió de la Copa Major i almenys un campió de la ciutat cada any. Aquesta temporada passada, va veure sis individus coronats als campionats de la ciutat i representar Tottenville al torneig estatal a Albany, cosa que mai abans havia fet l'equip d'una escola gran. Com va dir un partidari de Mirra, “La seva dedicació no s'acaba quan s'acaben els entrenaments…és l'entrenador en el qual confien els lluitadors quan estan lluitant".

Entrenadora de l'any per a noies de secundària: Teodor Cook, Harry S. Truman High School, Bronx
Un veterà de la lluita lliure amb més de vint anys d'experiència, Cook ha inspirat a diversos estudiants amb les seves habilitats d'entrenament. És molt respectat per empènyer a les seves noies a l'equip que va començar fora de les seves zones de confort i atrevir-les a intentar-ho al màxim.. "No té por d'anar més enllà per assegurar-se que el seu equip assoleixi tot el seu potencial,", va dir un estudiant. Un altre escriu: "Puc dir honestament que l'entrenador Cook és probablement la persona més fiable i fiable que conec". Diversos dels seus seguidors el lloen com una figura paterna que ajuda a aixecar l'ànim de tothom i inspira a les noies amb lliçons de vida..

Entrenador de l'any de secundària de nois: Pere Cardone, Escola secundària William Cullen Bryant, Queens
L'entrenador Cardone ha aprofitat al màxim tenir una sala dedicada a la lluita a WC Bryant High School i ha convertit un programa a la vora en campions de la ciutat.. El lideratge de Cardone, amb l'ajuda dels entrenadors Joe Goetz i Joseph Weinstein, va fer créixer el seu equip de quinze lluitadors a cinquanta-cinc. Cardone ha supervisat nombrosos èxits durant el seu temps a l'escola, inclòs el títol de estudiant de primer i segon de NYC i convertir-se en una regió invicta 4 Campions de Divisió. "Ha canviat la vida de molts lluitadors a l'escola en estar amb ells en moments tant bons com durs com a amic i entrenador".

Voluntari de l'any: David Prado
Prado ha participat en la lluita lliure des que estava a l'escola primària i va assistir a l'estat d'Arizona amb una beca esportiva. Està compromès amb l'esport perquè li ha donat tants èxits i oportunitats al llarg de la seva vida que busca "pagar-ho endavant" a altres nens sempre que sigui possible.. Mostra una dedicació incansable a la causa de Beat the Streets, voluntariat en pràctiques diversos dies a la setmana.

La gala Beat the Streets és una recaptació de fons anual que recapta diners per donar suport als estudiants-esportistes de la ciutat de Nova York, prèviament s'ha allotjat en llocs tan emblemàtics com Times Square i Grand Central Terminal. La gala ajuda a proporcionar equip i oportunitats de lluita lliure 3,000 nens als cinc districtes cada any. La celebració d'enguany, “Units a la Plaça,", veurà alguns dels millors lluitadors nord-americans, incloent Jordan Burroughs i Adeline Gray, enfrontant-se a la competència de classe mundial de l'Iran, Canadà, i Corea del Sud. La gala comença a les 3:45 Primer ministre a Dijous, Maig 19 amb partits d'exhibició amb joves lluitadors de Nova York abans que comencin els partits de lluita de classe mundial a les 6:00 Primer ministre. Les entrades per asseure's a Times Square i l'assistència a la recepció posterior al partit estan disponibles al lloc web de Beat the Streets..
