LAS VEGAS, NV (Lub peb hlis ntuj 10, 2020) – The Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame announced its 2020 class of inductees today at the Fernando Vargas Fighting Foundation in Las Vegas. Inductees in attendance were, 2-Time World Champion Fernando Vargas, 2-Time World Champion, Bones Adams, WBC Lightweight Champion, Devin Haney, who was voted Fighter of the Year, Xyoo prospect, Rolando Romero, thiab Saalim Gonzales, father of Amateur Fighter of the Year, Rahim Gonzales. The group was introduced by NVBHOF founder, Rich Morrata, and President Michelle Corrales.

Ayala-Tapia I (Rau hli ntuj 26, 1999, Ayala W 12) – In some of the fiercest two-way action in the history of Las Vegas boxing, southpaw Ayala hands Tapia his first professional loss in 49 fights and captures the WBA bantamweight title by the scores of 115-114 thiab 116-113 twice. Game On: As the boxers were being announced, Tapia walked across the ring and shoved Ayala causing a momentary skirmish.

 

Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo I (Tej zaum 7, 2005, Corrales TKO 10) — After nine intense, back-and-forth rounds, Corrales accomplishes the unthinkable, miraculously regrouping from two knockdowns in the 10th to stop Castillo in the same round (2:06) and etch his spot in boxing lore. After managing to beat the count (and lose a point for excessive spitting out of the mouthpiece), Corrales got Castillo on the ropes and connected with a huge right hand. He continued to unload and Castillo got nailed with a bundle of vicious punches. Moments later, the ref stopped it.

 

Lucas Matthysse-John Molina Jr. (Tim 26, 2014, Matthysse KO 11) — Abloody slugfest, in which both fighters were knocked down multiple times,became an instant classic. Matthysse who went down in the second and fifth rounds, came back with a late-fight onslaught to wear down and drop Molina in the eighth, 10th thiab 11th muab suav. The tremendous brawl was as brutal as it was exciting and more compelling to witness than anyone could have imagined.

NEW YORK (FEB. 11, 2015) – Tus 2005 Fight of the Year, featuring Diego “Chico” Corrales versus Jose Luis “El Terrible” Castillo, will air this Sunday hmo ntuj (FEB. 15) rau Fight Network USA ntawm 11:00-12:00 p.m. LI as part of its Banner: Best of the Decade Series.

Corrales vs. Castillo I, held May 7, 2005 in Las Vegas, was an epic World Boxing Organization (WBO)/World Boxing Council (WBC) unification fight between a pair of world lightweight champions.

 

Corrales (39-2), who died seven years ago in a motorcycle accident, was dropped twice by Corrales (52-6-1) in the 10th round. Corrales got up off the canvas and he soon connected with a perfect right hand that seriously hurt Castillo. Corrales quickly finished the show as referee Tony Weeks halted the action with Castillo trapped on the ropes, eating a barrage of unanswered punches. Corrales won by technical knockout in a spectacular comeback.

 

To a degree, Castillo got his revenge five months later by knocking out against Corrales in the fourth round, although Castillo came in overweight and no titles were at stake.

Ultimate Classic Boxing follows between 8-9 p.m. LI with a middleweight fight between hometown favorite Charley Joseph (32-1-1) thiab Milo Savage (39-33-8) in their April 25, 1956 fight at Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans. Joseph won a 10-round split decision.

 

Also airing this Sunday evening on Fight Network USA, commending at 9:00 p.m. LI, is a fight from July 6, 2013 in Lazio, Italy, in which local hero Silvio “El Barbaro” Branco (62-11-3), a two-time world light heavyweight champion, defeated former European titlist Juho Haapaja (20-3-1), of Finland, by a 10-round technical decision for the vacant WBC Silver cruiserweight title.
