Lewiston, Maine (March 10, 2016) - New England ayalwa (NEF), America isibalo-one zesifunda fight ukukhuthazwa, izobamba umcimbi walo olandelayo, “NEF 22: Zonke Izinkolo Ziholela LAPHA” on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée e Lewiston, Maine. The fight card will feature a mix of mixed-martial-arts (MMA) and professional boxing bouts. Ngasekuqaleni namuhla, NEF announced the addition of an amateur heavyweight bout to the MMA portion of the “NEF 22” fight ikhadi. Nick Gulliver (2-0) ziyohlangana Dave Smith (2-1) at a fight weight of 265-pounds.

Nick Gulliver is a product of John Raio’s First Class MMA gym of Brunswick, Maine, as well as the Foundry – a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) academy located in Farmington, Maine. He made his amateur debut last June at “NEF XVIII,” submitting Sonny Spratt (0-2) e emzuliswaneni wokuqala. Gulliver followed up that victory with a technical knockout (WHO) win over Jason Field (0-2) this past November a mere 12-seconds into the first round. He hopes another win on April 23rd will put him in line for a shot at the NEF MMA Amateur Heavyweight Title currently held by Billy Leahy (3-1).

I’m looking forward to fighting again for NEF on April 23rd, and I’m thankful for the opportunity that Matt Peterson and Nick Disalvo give me to fight for their amazing organization,” said Gulliver. “I’ll be fighting who I think is now the number one heavyweight fighter fighting for NEF, Dave Smith. This kid is a great fighter and good athlete. I’m looking forward to a great fight. I fight for two amazing schools and organizations, the Foundry and First Class MMA. This fight will be the first time I won’t be fighting in front of my father who is sick. It’s a lot for him to go to these events being so sick and on oxygen all the time. But my father stated he would make it to one last fight if I get a title shot. I think fighting Dave Smith and winning would put me in a good spot to fight for a title. I’m looking to get that fight in front of my father who pushes me to be the man I am today. Ngakho, for three rounds on April 23rd, I’ll be pushing harder than I have in the past to get that opportunity. I’m always looking to impress the crowd. I think fighting someone like Smith will keep the crowd on their feet.

Dave Smith is a member of Berserkers MMA based out of Rumford, Maine. Smith has an extensive wrestling background, having gone 147-17 while competing for Mountain Valley High School (MVHS) and winning two state titles in the process. He also wrestled for Plymouth State University (PSU) in New Hampshire. Like Gulliver, Smith finished his first two opponents in the opening round. He is looking to bounce back from a loss to Brendan Battles (2-0) at “NEF 21” ngenyanga edlule.

I’m glad to be on another NEF card,” exclaimed Smith. “I am also very excited to be fighting Nick Gully. Nick has had a couple impressive wins and I think this will be a good fight! So get ready because it’s going to be a hell of a show.

Lokhu June esidlule, 38-year-old Raio retired after competing in the NEF cage for some three-and-a-half years. Raio now concentrates on training the members of his First Class MMA gym, ezihlanganisa nokulungiselela izinkulumo Sparrell, Velado futhi Shea for iziqubu yabo oluzayo.

“I nakanjani abeke okuningi isikhathi more zibe fighters yami kanye nomndeni wami,” Said Ray. “The fighters, I can put a lot more time into them because it’s not all about me. When you’re fighting, lapho ubhekene ukuqeqesha for a fight, kungakhathaliseki ukuthi kungakanani zama ukugxila Nick Shea noma Nick Gully noma uHana Sparrell noma Rafael noma yimiphi fighters yethu, awukwazi ukubeka ngempela 100% effort into a fighter when you really focus on your own fight. It’s tough splitting between their fight and your fight and your job, umndeni wakho futhi izingane zakho.”

Kusukela ukuzalwa NEF ekuqaleni kuka 2012, kanye nokuqhuma alandelayo ukuthandwa mdlalo esifundazweni, gyms eziningi ezintsha kwamiswa eminyakeni yamuva, including First Class MMA. Raio enjoys, ngaphezu kwanoma yini enye, Friend-ukuluka, Umndeni-like emkhathini eliye lakhula kuleso sikhungo kusukela wavula ejimini.

“Into enkulu Ngithanda mayelana gym yethu, Ngiyakujabulela uya nokuba ingxenye, kuyinto kukhona iqembu othobekile kakhulu labafundi kanye abafundisi,” noted Raio. “Everyone who teaches in there is about the fighters. It’s about the students. They’re not about themselves. They’re more about trying to help people get better. Whether they’re a fighter or a teacher, we have a few teachers who go there and we have several women students and several children and adults. It’s a real good mix and very much a family atmosphere. We rarely lose a student.

The “Class First” moniker is not merely a nickname given to Raio because of his past job with the postal service. Early on in his MMA career, Raio nedumela enenhlonipho, classy, professional, ngamunye likeable, hence the pun in his nickname. Those same qualities have carried over to the students of First Class MMA.

“Ngizama ukwelapha wonke umuntu ngokulinganayo,” Said Ray. “I try to treat everyone respectfully. I think a lot of those guys (ejimini), esikhundleni salokho, treat each other respectfully. If I ever have an issue with a student, uma engekho ibambela enenhlonipho ukuba abafundisi noma abanye abafundi, I’ll pull them aside and if they have to leave then they have to leave. That’s part of life… Gym yethu edonsela, ngasizathu simbe, ntu abantu nje nice kukhona.”

With more and more abafundi omusha ozayo ngokusebenzisa emnyango gym yakhe, Raio has definitely kept busy since his retirement from active competition. Like a proud father, Raio has a real passion for the success of his students. The ultimate reward for him is seeing his protégées do well in the cage.

“Emva show last (NEF XVIII), lapho ngibona Nick (Gulliver, 1-0) ziye ingalo yakhe wazibuza yona futhi Rob (Robinson, 1-0), Ngajabula kakhulu kulabo guys,” recalled Raio. “I’m so happy to see these two guys win. As much as I didn’t come away with a win against Bruce (Boyington, 10-8), Ngathi: 'Uma siya 2-1, I’d rather be the one that didn’t pull off the victory.I’ve never been as happy for my own win than I was for Nick and Rob that night.

BOYINGTON UYA INHLOKO-TO-ekhanda RAIO DAYS NGAPHAMBI IMPI: “I ngingowakho woza yokumbulala”

NEF_FNVXIII_madeinUSA_FB_final+(1)

Lewiston, Maine (June 10, 2015) - New England ayalwa (NEF), America isibalo-one zesifunda fight ukukhuthazwa, izobamba exubile-karate-arts yayo lesificaminwembili (MMA) umcimbi, “NEF XVIII: EYENZIWE AMERICA,” lokhu ngoMgqibelo ebusuku, June 13, 2015 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. Muva, headliners Bruce “Umfana Omuhle” Boyington (10-8), the NEF MMA Professional Esilula Champion, futhi John “Class First” Ray(2-7) wajoyina NEF co-umnikazi wabantu Math Peterson on a ekhethekile “Head-to-Head” edition of the NEF Podcast. Boyington and Raio discussed the upcoming rematch and the controversy surrounding their first meeting in February 2014, phakathi kwezinye izihloko.

The interview quickly turned to the top of the first fight. Raio appeared to apply a rear-naked choke to Boyington on the mat late in the first round. Boyington began waving his hand in the air and referee Jimmy Bickford quickly stepped in to stop the fight. Much has been made of the infamous “isandla wave.” While Bickford saw it as a sign of Boyington’s submission, Boyington encintisene ukuthi yena nje waqhweba abalandeli bakhe esixukwini ukuthi hold wenza noma yimuphi umonakalo.

“Ngingakutshela ukuthi busuku yaphela kanjani,” recalled Raio of the first bout. “Ngokuyinhloko, Bruce had given me his back. When I took his back, I had the hooks in and I had the rear-naked choke across his jaw line. I was trying to pressure it under his throat, futhi njengoba Ngathatha bicep yami lesencele nesandla sami kwesobunxele uya ngemuva ekhanda lakhe, the Ref wama ukulwa… Kwangimangaza ukuthi wayekade yasentabeni ngoba, ngokwethembeka, Ngangazi ukuthi kwakufanele eziningi ingcindezi umhlathi wakhe… Uma eqinisweni wayeseholela wendiza, ukuthi encela ngaye.”

“Kuleso simo, Ngiyakhumbula ngqo Bickford ongibukayo, Ngikhathazekile ukubhekana, uya for entanyeni yami futhi ngiyathuthuka wendiza,” Said Boyington. “Everybody uqala ebhongayo zangempela elikhulu futhi ngiyakhumbula Bickford wathi, 'Akukho Bruce, awukwazi ukusho ukuthi '… Uma ucabanga ukuthi ngithandana oletha noma Ngikhathazekile osenkingeni noma akakwazi ukuphefumula, you don’t tell the fighter, “Awukwazi ukusho ukuthi,” you just jump in and you stop the fight. I feel like he made a mistake. I feel like he realizes that… Ngibona izinto eziningi ezahlukene ukuthi uJohane uye wathi online, futhi izinto eziningi kwabanye abantu abaye bathi, and that’s when I really started to get bothered by what had happened. I felt like he could’ve handled it better.

Ngaphambi Boyington adikibale emuva kwakhe, many felt he had been winning that first round. Ngempela, Boyington’s striking seemed to be on point that evening. Peterson asked both competitors to speculate on what would have happened had the referee not stopped the bout at that point.

“Nakanjani, Ngicabanga uJohane ubulokhu akhishwe,” stated Boyington emphatically. “Angicabangi I ngingowakho faka him, because that would be his best chance with me. He’s strong enough to defend a submission.

“Ngicabanga uma Ref akazange ayeke ngesikhathi, lapho ngisendleleni umhlathi wakhe kanye ibhodi lemisindo yami mina wayezama ngemuva entanyeni yakhe,” Ray babecabanga, “I believe my arm would’ve slid under his throat and it would’ve ended sometime soon before the round. Ngakho, Angicabangi ukuthi bekungaba ofunde nxazonke wesibili.”

Ezinsukwini, amasonto nezinyanga ezilandela impi, both Boyington’s and Raio’s massive fan-followings have been very vocal on social media regarding the outcome of the bout. The heated debate has raged between both sides for well over a year now. With so much at stake for each side at “NEF XVIII,” bobabili abasubathi yayithinta lokho rematch kusho kubo, futhi lokho abakudingayo ukuze afakazele lokhu ngempelasonto ezayo.

“Ngeke nje ngikwazi ukuya khona futhi abashaya John,” Said Boyington. “Ngisho abalandeli bakhe siqu balindele ukuthi… Angikwazi nje ukuya khona on June 13thand beat John Raio. I gotta go in there and destroy him. Or I still lose out on this fight. Ngiyakwazi lokho, and I’m gonna go in there and make that statement. And I’m gonna do it with one arm, ngoba ezinye ingalo is hhayi ngisho besebenza okwamanje… I haven’t worried about this date from day one. It’s nothing to do with John Raio. I don’t disrespect the guy. I don’t not like the guy. He’s a good man. I’m just at another level. I need to show up and prove that. That’s what it is to me. It’s not about me beating John. It’s about me showing everybody where I belong.

“Endzabeni Bruce aqeda kimi ngokushesha, futhi okwenza kube lula, hhayi ukukhathazeka ngempela mayelana nokulwa ngokweqile, Ngisanda kuwukungabi nanhlonipho like a lot of izinto yena wathi kimi, umndeni wami nabangane bami,” replied Raio. “Kunezikhathi ngemuva kokuthi kuqubuke impi wokugcina lapho abantu base ekubongeni kimi (ku-Facebook) and he’d go on like a one or two paragraph rant on every single comment everyone had put on my page for like three days straight. Ngakho, emva kwalokho ngathi 'Bruce mina akuzona ngempela abangane aphinde,’ so I deleted him. I liked him before that fight… kodwa lapho abantu abadelela kimi like anakho kunzima bathanda nsizwa.”
