The fight card will feature a mix of mixed-martial-arts (MMA) and professional boxing bouts. Nick Gulliver is a product of John Raio’s First Class MMA gym of Brunswick, Maine, as well as the Foundry – ib tug Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) academy located in Farmington, Maine. He made his amateur debut last June at “NEF XVIII,” submitting Sonny Spratt (0-2) nyob rau hauv thawj puag ncig. Gulliver followed up that victory with a technical knockout (LEEJ TWG) win over Jason Field (0-2) this past November a mere 12-seconds into the first round. He hopes another win on April 23rd will put him in line for a shot at the NEF MMA Amateur Heavyweight Title currently held by Billy Leahy (3-1).

“I’m looking forward to fighting again for NEF on April 23rd, and I’m thankful for the opportunity that Matt Peterson and Nick Disalvo give me to fight for their amazing organization,” said Gulliver. “I’ll be fighting who I think is now the number one heavyweight fighter fighting for NEF, Dave Smith. This kid is a great fighter and good athlete. I’m looking forward to a great fight. I fight for two amazing schools and organizations, the Foundry and First Class MMA. This fight will be the first time I won’t be fighting in front of my father who is sick. It’s a lot for him to go to these events being so sick and on oxygen all the time. But my father stated he would make it to one last fight if I get a title shot. I think fighting Dave Smith and winning would put me in a good spot to fight for a title. I’m looking to get that fight in front of my father who pushes me to be the man I am today. Yog li ntawd, for three rounds on April 23rd, I’ll be pushing harder than I have in the past to get that opportunity. I’m always looking to impress the crowd. I think fighting someone like Smith will keep the crowd on their feet.”

Dave Smith is a member of Berserkers MMA based out of Rumford, Maine. Smith has an extensive wrestling background, having gone 147-17 while competing for Mountain Valley High School (MVHS) and winning two state titles in the process. He also wrestled for Plymouth State University (PSU) in New Hampshire. Like Gulliver, Smith finished his first two opponents in the opening round. He is looking to bounce back from a loss to Brendan Battles (2-0) ntawm “NEF 21” lub hli tas los.

“I’m glad to be on another NEF card,” exclaimed Smith. “I am also very excited to be fighting Nick Gully. Nick has had a couple impressive wins and I think this will be a good fight! So get ready because it’s going to be a hell of a show.”

Qhov no yav dhau los rau hli ntuj, 38-year-old Raio retired after competing in the NEF cage for some three-and-a-half years. Raio now concentrates on training the members of his First Class MMA gym, xws li npaj Sparrell, Velado thiab Shea rau lawv tom ntej bouts.

“Kuv twv yuav raug hu yuav muab tso rau ib tug ntau ntau lub sij hawm mus rau hauv kuv tua hluav taws raws li zoo raws li kuv tsev neeg,” Hais Ray. “Lub tua hluav taws, I can put a lot more time into them because it’s not all about me. When you’re fighting, thaum koj nyob nraum cob rau ib tug sib ntaus, tsis muaj teeb meem ntau npaum li cas koj sim ua kom pom tseeb rau ntawm Nick Shea los yog Nick Gully los yog Hannah Sparrell los yog Rafael los yog ib yam ntawm peb tua hluav taws, koj yuav tsis tshua muab tso rau 100% effort into a fighter when you really focus on your own fight. It’s tough splitting between their fight and your fight and your job, koj tsev neeg thiab koj cov me nyuam.”

Txij thaum yug tus me nyuam ntawm NEF nyob rau hauv thaum ntxov 2012, thiab lub tom ntej tawg ntawm lub ua si nawv lub koob meej nyob rau hauv lub xeev, ntau yam tshiab gyms tau tuaj mus nyob rau hauv xyoo tsis ntev los, including First Class MMA. Raio enjoys, ntau tshaj lwm yam, lub kaw ntom nti ua-ntos, tsev neeg-xws li chaw uas tau tsim ntawm lub chaw txij li thaum nws qhib lub gym.

“Qhov loj tshaj plaws uas kuv nyiam txog peb cov gym, Kuv yeej zoo siab mus thiab yog ib feem ntawm, yog muaj ib tug heev txo hwj chim pab pawg neeg ntawm cov tub ntxhais kawm thiab instructors,” noted Raio. “Everyone who teaches in there is about the fighters. It’s about the students. They’re not about themselves. They’re more about trying to help people get better. Whether they’re a fighter or a teacher, we have a few teachers who go there and we have several women students and several children and adults. It’s a real good mix and very much a family atmosphere. We rarely lose a student.

Lub “Thawj cov hoob kawm” moniker is not merely a nickname given to Raio because of his past job with the postal service. Early on in his MMA career, Raio khwv tau lub koob npe nrov ntawm ib tug kev sib fwm, classy, kev, likeable neeg, hence the pun in his nickname. Those same qualities have carried over to the students of First Class MMA.

“Kuv sim mus kho txhua leej txhua tus sib npaug,” Hais Ray. “I try to treat everyone respectfully. I think a lot of those guys (ntawm lub gym), nyob rau hauv lem, treat each other respectfully. If I ever have an issue with a student, yog hais tias lawv nyob nraum tsis sawv kev sib fwm rau cov xib hwb los yog tus me nyuam kawm ntawv lwm yam, I’ll pull them aside and if they have to leave then they have to leave. That’s part of life… Peb gym attracts, rau ib co yog vim li cas, cov neeg uas yog cov cia li zoo neeg.”

Muaj ntau thiab ntau dua tshiab cov tub ntxhais kawm los ntawm nws lub qhov rooj gym, Raio has definitely kept busy since his retirement from active competition. Like a proud father, Raio has a real passion for the success of his students. The ultimate reward for him is seeing his protégées do well in the cage.

“Tom qab qhov kawg yeeb (NEF XVIII), thaum kuv pom Nick (Gulliver, 1-0) tau nws sab caj npab tsa thiab Rob (Robinson, 1-0), Kuv zoo siab heev rau cov hais mav,” recalled Raio. “I’m so happy to see these two guys win. As much as I didn’t come away with a win against Bruce (Boyington, 10-8), Kuv hais tias 'yog hais tias peb mus 2-1, I’d rather be the one that didn’t pull off the victory.I’ve never been as happy for my own win than I was for Nick and Rob that night.

NEF_FNVXIII_madeinUSA_FB_final+(1)

Lewiston, Maine (Lub rau hli ntuj 10, 2015) - Tshiab England Fights (NEF), America lub xov tooj-ib regional sib ntaus qib, yuav tuav nws xyoo mixed martial--kawm (MMA) kev tshwm sim, “NEF XVIII: UA NYOB RAU HAUV America,” no hnub vas xaum hmo ntuj, Lub rau hli ntuj 13, 2015 nyob rau ntawm lub Androscoggin Bank Colisee nyob rau hauv Lewiston, Maine. Tsis ntev los no, headliners Bruce “Zoo nkauj tub” Boyington (10-8), lub NEF MMA Kev Hnav zus, thiab John “Thawj cov hoob kawm” Ray(2-7) koom NEF co-tswv thiab matchmaker Matt Peterson rau ib tug tshwj xeeb “Head-to-taub hau” edition of the NEF Podcast. Boyington and Raio discussed the upcoming rematch and the controversy surrounding their first meeting in February 2014, cov lwm yam ntsiab lus.

The interview quickly turned to the top of the first fight. Raio appeared to apply a rear-naked choke to Boyington on the mat late in the first round. Boyington began waving his hand in the air and referee Jimmy Bickford quickly stepped in to stop the fight. Much has been made of the infamous “tes yoj.” While Bickford saw it as a sign of Boyington’s submission, Boyington tau sib cav hais tias nws twb yuav luag taw mus rau nws lub kiv cua nyob rau hauv cov neeg coob coob hais tias cov tuav tsis ua tej yam puas tsuaj.

“Kuv yuav qhia rau koj yuav ua li cas hmo ntawd twb,” recalled Raio of the first bout. “Yeej, Bruce had given me his back. When I took his back, I had the hooks in and I had the rear-naked choke across his jaw line. I was trying to pressure it under his throat, thiab raws li kuv tsawv nkaus kuv sab laug bicep thiab kuv sab tes laug twb yuav mus nyob tom qab nws lub taub hau, lub nyob nres kev sib ntaus… Kuv twb xav tsis thoob li hais tias nws tau tapped vim hais tias, honestly, Kuv paub hais tias kuv muaj ib tug ntau ntawm siab rau nws lub puab tsaig… Yog hais tias nyob rau hauv qhov tseeb nws yog waving, uas tsis zoo rau nws.”

“Nyob rau hauv uas qhov teeb meem no, Kuv yeej nco ntsoov Bickford saib kuv, Kuv lub ntsej muag li, nws yuav rau kuv lub caj dab thiab kuv waving,” hais tias Boyington. “Txhua leej txhua tus pib tsov tiag tiag nrov nrov thiab kuv nco ntsoov hais tias Bickford, 'Tsis yog Bruce, koj tsis tau hais tias '… Yog hais tias koj xav hais tias kuv xa los yog Kuv nyob rau hauv cov teeb meem los yog muaj peev xwm tsis ua pa, you don’t tell the fighter, “Koj tsis tau hais tias,” you just jump in and you stop the fight. I feel like he made a mistake. I feel like he realizes that… Kuv pom ib tug ntau ntawm txawv tej yam uas Yauhas tau hais tias online, thiab ib tug ntau ntawm tej yam uas lwm tus neeg tau hais tias, and that’s when I really started to get bothered by what had happened. I felt like he could’ve handled it better.

Ua ntej yuav Boyington muab nws rov qab, many felt he had been winning that first round. Tseeb, Boyington’s striking seemed to be on point that evening. Peterson asked both competitors to speculate on what would have happened had the referee not stopped the bout at that point.

“Inevitably, Kuv xav hais tias John yuav twb tau khob qhov rooj tawm,” stated Boyington emphatically. “Kuv tsis xav tias kuv yuav ua rau xa nws, because that would be his best chance with me. He’s strong enough to defend a submission.

“Kuv xav tias yog lub me nyob tsis tau nres thaum lub sij hawm, thaum kuv yog nyob rau hauv nws lub puab tsaig nrog kuv forearm thiab kuv twb ncav tom qab nws caj dab,” Ray speculated, “I believe my arm would’ve slid under his throat and it would’ve ended sometime soon before the round. Yog li ntawd, Kuv tsis xav tias nws yuav twb ploj mus rau ib tug thib ob puag ncig.”

Nyob rau hauv lub hnub, lub lim piam thiab lub hlis tom qab lub sib ntaus, both Boyington’s and Raio’s massive fan-followings have been very vocal on social media regarding the outcome of the bout. The heated debate has raged between both sides for well over a year now. With so much at stake for each side at “NEF XVIII,” ob ncaws pob kov rau dab tsi lub rematch txhais tau hais tias lawv, thiab yog dab tsi lawv yuav tsum tau ua pov thawj no los lis xaus.

“Kuv cia li tsis tau mus nyob rau hauv muaj thiab yeej John,” hais tias Boyington. “Txawm nws tus kheej kiv cua cia siab tias yuav… Kuv yuav tsis cia li mus nyob rau hauv muaj nyob rau hauv Lub rau hli ntuj 13thand beat John Raio. I gotta go in there and destroy him. Or I still lose out on this fight. Kuv paub hais tias, and I’m gonna go in there and make that statement. And I’m gonna do it with one arm, vim hais tias cov lwm sab caj npab yog tsis txawm ua hauj lwm txoj cai tam sim no… I haven’t worried about this date from day one. It’s nothing to do with John Raio. I don’t disrespect the guy. I don’t not like the guy. He’s a good man. I’m just at another level. I need to show up and prove that. That’s what it is to me. It’s not about me beating John. It’s about me showing everybody where I belong.”

“Nyob rau hauv hais txog Bruce xov kuv sai sai, thiab ua rau nws yooj yim, thiab tsis tshua txhawj txog kev sib ntaus heev npaum li cas, Kuv cia li nrhiav nws tsis hwm zoo li ib tug ntau ntawm tej yam uas nws hais rau kuv tias, kuv tsev neeg thiab kuv cov phooj ywg,” replied Raio. “Muaj lub sij hawm tom qab kawg sib ntaus thaum cov neeg tau congratulating kuv (on Facebook) and he’d go on like a one or two paragraph rant on every single comment everyone had put on my page for like three days straight. Yog li ntawd, tom qab uas kuv hais tias 'Bruce thiab kuv yeej tsis cov phooj ywg ntxiv lawm,’ so I deleted him. I liked him before that fight… tab sis thaum cov neeg saib tsis taus kuv zoo li nws muaj nws yog ib qho nyuaj rau xav tus txiv leej tub.”

UNFINISHED BUSINESS LEADS TO LONG-AWAITED REMATCH

Bruce Boyington protests to referee Jimmy Bickford after his first fight with John Raio is stopped

Lewiston, Maine (Plaub Hlis Ntuj 21, 2015) - Tshiab England Fights (NEF), America lub xov tooj-ib regional sib ntaus qib, yuav tuav nws xyoo mixed martial--kawm (MMA) kev tshwm sim, “NEF XVIII: Made in America,” rau Saturday, Lub rau hli ntuj 13, 2015 nyob rau ntawm lub Androscoggin Bank Colisee nyob rau hauv Lewiston, Maine. Nyuam qhuav pib hnub no, the promotion announced that NEF MMA Professional Lightweight Champion Bruce “Zoo nkauj tub” Boyington (10-8) yuav ua tau raws li John “Thawj cov hoob kawm” Ray (2-7) on the card in a non-title bout at a weight of 150-pounds.

Boyington and Raio first met in February 2014 ntawm “NEF XII” nyob rau hauv Lewiston. Boyington dominated the early moments with his striking. Coming towards the end of the first round, Raio would take Boyington’s back and apply a rear-naked choke on the mat. The future lightweight champion waved his hand in the air, a signal which referee Jimmy Bickford took to indicate Boyington’s submission. Bickford stopped the bout and awarded the fight to Raio, drawing an immediate protest from Boyington who stated he was waving to his fans in the crowd as a sign that he was not in danger.

In the days that followed, a heated debate would rage on social media over the controversial finish to the fight. Both fighters, boasting arguably the two largest fan bases in all of New England, were at the center of an epic war of words between their respective supporters. It seemed as though everyone had an opinion, and the entire state of Maine was split.

Things were crazy that week after the bout,” recalled NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “Our Facebook page was flooded with comments and private messages. Everybody and their mother was weighing in. It’s probably the most controversial moment in NEF history. Fans have been asking us for over a year when the rematch would happen. The time has finally come, Lub rau hli ntuj 13 nyob rau hauv Lewiston!”

Boyington would go on to have a highly successful finish to 2014, winning not one but two regional MMA titles, including the NEF MMA Professional Lightweight Championship. He would also win his professional boxing debut at NEF’s inaugural boxing event in October 2014. Boyington has, nyob rau hauv qhov tseeb, won four of his last five since the Raio loss.

“This fight is solely about redemption and giving the fans what they have been wanting to see,” stated Boyington when reached for comment. “Sometimes you have to step outside of what is best for you in this sport and entertain and that’s what I’m doing. I like a challenge—the biggest challenge—and that time will come, but for now, its about showing people what was about to happen last time and I can still show I’m three-levels above him by making the statement I’m about to embark on. I’m done with mishaps in that cage. I’m seizing every opportunity and will not let something slip again. Mark my words, its about to get tiag tiag in my fight.”

Raio is coming off two losses in a row to his archrival, Derek Shorey (2-1), including one defeat earlier this month at “NEF XVII.” In need of a win, the founder of First Class MMA may now be more determined than ever to return to the NEF cage.

“I know this is a fight that I want, Bruce wants, and a lot of MMA fans have asked for,” stated Raio when reached for comment. “I look forward to fighting Bruce. Hopefully when the fight is over, there will be no controversy.”
