Combat Sports Weekend Preview: UFC Vegas 107 & Boxing Showcase

Por: Ricos Bergeron

This weekend features compelling action across both mixed martial arts and boxing, with UFC Vegas 107 headlined by Erin Blanchfield vs. Maycee Barber taking center stage alongside significant boxing cards featuring established names and rising contenders.

UFC Vegas 107: Blanchfield vs. Barber – Maio 31, 2025

Main Event: Women’s Flyweight Showdown

The UFC returns to the Apex facility in Las Vegas with a women’s flyweight bout that carries significant divisional implications. Erin Blanchfield faces Maycee Barber in the main event, representing a clash between two of the division’s most promising contenders.

Erin Blanchfield enters this contest as one of the most technically proficient grapplers in the women’s flyweight division. Known for her suffocating ground game and submission prowess, Blanchfield has built her reputation on methodical performances that showcase her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt credentials. Her wrestling base allows her to dictate where fights take place, often overwhelming opponents with her positional control and relentless pressure.

Blanchfield’s striking has evolved considerably throughout her UFC tenure. While she may not possess potent knockout power, her technical boxing and ability to set up takedowns through striking exchanges make her a well-rounded threat. Her top-level cardio gives her consistent advantages, allowing her to maintain pressure throughout three-round contests.

Maycee Barber represents the athletic, explosive side of the flyweight equation. “The Futureburst onto the scene with dynamic striking and aggressive forward pressure. Her athletic gifts are undeniable – explosive takedown defense, sharp boxing combinations, and the ability to generate power in short exchanges.

Barber’s evolution as a fighter has been notable. Early career setbacks taught her valuable lessons about pacing herself and the importance of fight IQ, leading to more measured approaches in recent outings. Her striking diversity, including effective kicks and knees, provides multiple weapons to threaten opponents. The question remains whether her takedown defense can withstand Blanchfield’s persistent wrestling attacks.

Tactical Breakdown: This matchup presents a classic grappler versus striker dynamic. Blanchfield will look to close the distance, secure takedowns, and control position while hunting for submissions. Barber’s success depends on maintaining a comfortable distance, stuffing takedown attempts, and unleashing combinations during brief exchanges.

The key factor that may sway the fight in her favor will be Barber’s ability to create scrambles and also wall-walking back up when taken down. If she can consistently return to her feet, her striking advantages become more pronounced. Conversely, if Blanchfield can establish prolonged ground control, her submission threats and ground-and-pound could prove decisive.

Co-Main Event: Lightweight Contenders Collide

Mateusz Gamrot faces Ludovit Klein in a lightweight bout that could have ranking implications for both fighters.

Mateusz Gamrot represents one of the most complete lightweights outside the division’s elite tier. The Polish veteran combines elite-level wrestling with increasingly dangerous striking. His grappling credentials speak for themselves – multiple submission victories and dominant positional control define his ground game.

Gamrot’s striking has developed into a legitimate threat. His boxing combinations, particularly his jab-cross sequences, set up takedown opportunities while keeping opponents honest on the feet. His conditioning allows him to maintain a grueling pace that often breaks opponents in later rounds.

Ludovit Klein brings European kickboxing pedigree and improving wrestling defense. His striking flows naturally, with excellent footwork and combination punching that can trouble any opponent. Klein’s recent performances have showcased improved takedown defense and scrambling ability.

The Slovakian’s path to victory involves keeping the fight standing and outworking Gamrot in striking exchanges. His volume and diversity of attacks could accumulate damage over three rounds if he can neutralize wrestling threats.

Fight Analysis: Gamrot enters as the betting favorite based on his grappling advantages and overall experience level. Klein’s striking poses legitimate threats, but his ability to defend takedowns consistently will determine the fight’s trajectory. Expect Gamrot to mix wrestling attempts with striking exchanges, while Klein looks to counter and maintain distance.

Light Heavyweight Action: Power Meets Technique

Dustin Jacoby meets Bruno Lopes in a light heavyweight contest featuring contrasting styles and experience levels.

Dustin Jacoby brings extensive kickboxing experience and proven UFC-level competition. His striking base provides clean technique and fight-ending power. Jacoby’s recent performances have demonstrated improved wrestling defense and ground awareness, addressing previous vulnerabilities.

His kickboxing background translates well to MMA, with excellent distance management and counter-striking ability. Jacoby’s leg kicks and boxing combinations can accumulate damage quickly against opponents who engage in striking exchanges.

Bruno Lopes represents the emerging Brazilian talent pipeline. His grappling base and submission threats provide alternative victory paths beyond striking exchanges. Lopes’ aggression and willingness to engage in exchanges make him dangerous throughout fights.

The Brazilian’s striking has shown improvement, though his tendency toward wild exchanges can create opportunities for technical strikers like Jacoby to capitalize.

Middleweight Prospects Square Off

Zachary Resse faces Dusko Todorovic in a middleweight bout between developing prospects seeking breakthrough performances.

Zachary Resse has shown flashes of potential with well-rounded skills and improved fight IQ. His wrestling base provides a foundation, while his striking continues developing. Resse’s ability to mix takedowns with striking exchanges keeps opponents guessing.

Dusko Todorovic brings European striking experience and knockout power. The Serbian’s boxing combinations and counter-striking ability make him dangerous in exchanges. His takedown defense has been tested but shows room for improvement against persistent wrestlers.

Preliminary Card Highlights

Flyweight Action: Brazilian Showdown

Jafel Filho squares off against Allan Nascimento in flyweight action, representing a clash between Brazilian fighters with different strengths.

Filho’s grappling-heavy approach contrasts with Nascimento’s more well-rounded skill set. Both fighters represent the depth of Brazil’s flyweight talent pool and will look to make statements with impressive performances.

Women’s Bantamweight: Experience vs. Youth

Ketlen Vieira meets Macy Chiasson in women’s bantamweight competition, pairing a former title challenger against an athletic rising contender.

Vieira’s experience at the highest levels of women’s bantamweight competition provides valuable insight into championship-level preparation. Her technical striking and grappling make her a complete threat at 135 libras.

Chiasson’s athletic gifts and improving technique suggest significant upside. Her ability to adapt mid-fight and make necessary adjustments could prove crucial against a veteran like Vieira.

Boxing Weekend Showcase

Saturday Night Boxing: Plant Returns

Caleb Plant faces Jose Armando Resendiz on Saturday, Maio 31, 2025, marking the former super middleweight champion’s return to action. This bout will be broadcast on Amazon Prime from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Caleb Planta represents one of boxing’s most technically sound fighters. The former IBF super middleweight champion’s boxing IQ and defensive awareness make him a difficult puzzle for any opponent. Plant’s jab establishes distance and timing, while his footwork creates angles for counter-opportunities.

Plant’s recent setback against Canelo Alvarez provided a valuable learning experience in making championship-level adjustments. His ability to implement lessons learned from that bout and maintain his technical advantages will be crucial moving forward.

Jose Armando Resendiz enters as a live underdog with legitimate upset potential. His pressure-heavy fighting style and willingness to engage in exchanges could create problems for any fighters who prefers operating at a distance.

Resendiz’s success depends on closing distance, roughing up Plant on the inside, and making the fight ugly. His conditioning and ability to maintain pressure throughout rounds will determine his upset chances.

Jermall Charlo Returns

Jermall Charlo faces Thomas LaManna in what marks the return of one of boxing’s most talented middleweights. Charlo’s extended absence from active competition raises questions about ring rust and timing.

Jermall Charlo possesses elite-level power and boxing ability. His left hook can end fights instantly, while his overall skill set places him among the division’s best talents. The long layoff creates uncertainty about his current form and motivation.

Charlo’s jab sets up power shots effectively, and his ability to fight effectively at range makes him versatile. His return bout selection suggests a careful approach to returning to championship-level activity.

Thomas LaManna provides a suitable opponent for Charlo’s comeback. His durability and willingness to engage should provide adequate testing without overwhelming risk for the returning champion.

Rising Contender Action

Kyrone Davis meets Yoenli Hernandez in supporting action that could have implications for future title contention in their respective weight classes.

Davis represents American boxing’s developing talent pipeline, with technical skills and improving power. His amateur background provides a solid foundation for professional success.

Hernandez brings international experience and proven durability. His ability to make adjustments mid-fight and capitalize on any opponent’s mistakes makes him a dangerous opponent for any fighter.

Friday Night Boxing

Manuel Gallegos faces Khalil Coe on Friday, Maio 30, 2025, from Guadalajara, México, kicking off the weekend’s boxing action. This bout will be available on DAZN.

The international setting provides an excellent atmosphere for competitive boxing. Both fighters enter with points to prove and opportunities to establish themselves in their respective divisions.

Viewing Information and Expectations

UFC Vegas 107 Details

The main card begins at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+, with preliminary action starting at 6 p.m. ET exclusively on ESPN+. The Apex facility provides an intimate setting that often produces exciting fights due to fighters hearing crowd reactions and corner instructions more clearly.

The card’s depth suggests potential for multiple performance bonuses, as UFC events at the Apex frequently reward exciting performances with financial incentives.

Boxing Broadcast Information

The boxing events span multiple platforms and time zones. Saturday’s main boxing card begins at 8:00 PM EST on Amazon Prime, while Friday’s action streams on DAZN.

Analysis and Predictions

UFC Vegas 107 Outlook

The Blanchfield vs. Barber main event represents genuine title eliminator potential in the women’s flyweight division. Both fighters sit near championship contention, making this bout crucial for future title shot considerations.

Blanchfield’s grappling advantages appear significant on paper, but Barber’s athletic gifts and improved fight IQ could create competitive exchanges. The fight likely comes down to Barber’s takedown defense and ability to create damage during stand-up exchanges.

The co-main event between Gamrot and Klein provides excellent stylistic contrast. Gamrot’s wrestling should prove decisive unless Klein can implement a perfect gameplan of distance management and takedown defense.

Boxing Event Analysis

Plant’s return represents significant interest for boxing fans. His technical skills remain elite-level, but questions about motivation and ring timing following the Canelo defeat create intrigue.

Charlo’s comeback carries more uncertainty due to his extended absence. His natural talent suggests success against LaManna, but ring rust and timing issues could create competitive moments.

CALEB PLANT

“Expect fireworks. Me and my team have been grinding hard and once that bell rings, I’m gonna step on him.

“Armando thinks he can beat me, and that’s enough to piss me off. He knows what’s coming to him.

“I’m not gonna be distracted from the fight that’s in front of me. It’s happened so many times where fighters get so worried about the next fight, and they don’t win the fight in front of them. I’m not letting that happen. Armando is coming to take my spot, but I’m not gonna let that happen.

“The first thing on my mind is to put on a great performance on May 31. I want Charlo, Edgar Berlanga, Jaime Munguia, Diego Pacheco, and anyone else who’s up there. Then I’ll end up where I’m supposed to be. I’m gonna pick them off one by one.

“Some fighters lose and their confidence is shattered. Maybe their confidence was fake to begin with. A loss has never made me think I couldn’t do what I’m capable of. I take those experiences and learn to make adjustments, which a lot of fighters aren’t able to do.

“Experience isn’t something you can buy or borrow. You have to walk through the fire. I’ve been on the biggest stages in boxing. Each time you get those experiences, you take it over to the next fight.

“I’m too strong, I’m too fast and I’m too slick for Armando. I have a great team with me. We’re the A-Team. We’re coming to win and we’re going to win.

“I have the desire to win and the desire to be a champion. Even with the success I’ve had, that desire doesn’t dim at all.

“I feel strongly that you should have fun doing what you love to do. Boxing is the place where I can let go. When that bell rings, that’s when I can be myself.”

ARMANDO RESENDIZ

“I’m really looking forward to this fight. I’m in excellent shape because I’m facing an elite fighter who’s accomplished a lot. My dream has always been to fight against the best and this is making my dream come true. We’re going to give the fans a great fight.

“I know that Caleb remembers me from those sparring sessions. I believe it was right before the Canelo fight. I know that I have the tools to overcome this challenge.

“I think Caleb has some selective memory about our sparring. They took me out of the gym for a reason. I’m gonna show him exactly how much I’ve grown on May 31.

“I don’t care about anyone else but my team and my family. I’m here making my dreams come true. I’m a Mexican fighter and people are gonna see what I’m capable of. It’s not because I think I can win, it’s because I know I can win.

“Training camp has been going great and I’ve had really good sparring sessions. I’m feeling really confident and I’m ready to get it on.

“Like the Mexican fighter that I am, I always put my best foot forward. I believe in what I can do. My career has had highs and lows, but I’ve realized that there’s no opponent that I will fear.

“The fights that I’ve had in the past will allow me to be even stronger this time around.”

Charlo JERMALL

“This is gonna be a fight. I gotta do what I always do. He’s gonna come at me and make it a fight. I expect the best out of him and I’ll be ready to make the adjustments.

“Thomas LaManna is standing in the way of my goals and my dreams. But I’m ready to stand in the paint with him.

“I’m ready to get back in the ring. Those two years actually helped me. They made me better. Not only have I not taken damage, but they’ve made me stronger.

“I’m back at 100%. I feel stronger and better. I’m fully back. My team is better and everything is falling into place perfectly. I got Houston back on my back. I can carry them now.

“There’s bigger fish to fry. I just hope Thomas can go back to his family happy after.”

THOMAS LAMANNA

“We’re gonna shock the world on May 31. That’s what we’re coming to do.

“I’m glad this fight is finally here. The timing is right and I’m excited and ready. We’ll both be in that ring and ready to rumble.

“He is who he is in this sport. He’s been off for a while, but he’s never lost. This is the biggest fight of my life and I’ve been training like it.

“I’ve gotten a lot more experience since I fought Erislandy Lara. The best lesson in life is experience. Every day you get better. I’ve gotten more comfortable with these last nine wins.

“Once the call came for this fight, I answered. I’m here to write my own legacy.”

HOUSTON – May 18, 2021 - Unbeaten WBC Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo and hard-hitting 160-pound contender Juan Macías Montiel met face-to-face for the first time Tuesday during a kick-off press conference as they preview the main event of a special Juneteenth Day celebration in Charlo’s hometown of Houston Saturday, Junho 19 at Toyota Center headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event live on SHOWTIME.

Charlo has established himself as a force in two divisions and will seek to thrill his hometown crowd against Mexico’s Montiel in a first-of-its-kind Juneteenth Day boxing celebration. Charlo will fight in Houston for the fourth time as a pro and look to keep his undefeated record intact against the upset-minded Montiel.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will begin at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT and feature rising lightweight contender Isaac Cruz lutando contra o ex-campeão do mundo Francisco Vargas no co-evento principal de 10 rodadas. Kicking off the telecast, ex-campeão mundial Angelo Leo returns to take on Mexican contender Aaron Alameda em um 10-redonda super galo luta.

Here is what Charlo, Montiel and their trainers had to say Tuesday:

Charlo JERMALL:

“Junho 19, ele vai ser fogos de artifício. A parade. A celebration. Me and Ronnie Shields get a chance to do it again. I’m working hard. I was working hard before I even knew who Montiel was. Desta vez, you get a chance to see all the hard work I’ve put in for so many years. It’s a dream come true to be able to fight in my city and I get a chance to do it with a crowd. Tune in and get your tickets because it’s going to be a great night of boxing.

“There’s no better day to fight than Juneteenth. It’s a celebration for me and my people and I get to represent them and carry them on my back. To be able to do it for my city right here at the Toyota Center – it’s going to be an amazing night of boxing.

“Montiel is fearless. He’s a fighter that I think deserves a chance. At this point, he understands where he’s at. Esta é uma grande luta. A lot of people may not know who Montiel is, just like I didn’t, but he’s a strong fighter. The people want to see me get tested, direito? I want to see those big fights, muito. In a matter of time, they’ll come. But Montiel should be a good fight.

“I’m going to whoop his ass. He doesn’t stand a chance. They’re all confident. I got the belt. The belt ain’t going nowhere. Toyota Center, Prepare -se. It’s going to be fireworks June 19. He can be as confident as he wants, but when we get in there he’s going to have to figure it out.

“I’m ready to fight the best in the world. I’m the best in the world and I’m not going to let this guy over here stop me. The belt is not going nowhere. The belt is staying right here in ‘H Town.’ There’s nothing he could do about it. Nothing. It’s my belt. It’s my legacy. You’ll find out June 19.

“A fighter like Montiel is challenging to go in there and get the job done real clean and swiftly because if I look bad against a guy like this, they’ll take away from what I did in the Derevyanchenko fight. Mas, sim, to date, Derevyanchenko was one of my hardest fights, but I made nice work of it and onto the next one.

“I got the belt. Champions fight champions. We unify. Mas se não, we’re not just going to sit back. Those guys that have the belt like Triple G, Canelo and Andrade – the belts are out there so eventually it will happen. I’m not in a rush. Sou jovem. I’m still having fun. I’m enjoying what I do best.

“If Triple G wants this WBC belt, I have it. It’s over here, it’s open. I’m ready to fight.”

JUAN MACÍAS MONTIEL:

“We are focused on preparing as well as possible. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are taking it as such with a lot of dedication and discipline. We are ready to put on a great show on June 19.

“This is the fight I always dreamed of. I am all about challenging myself and fighting against the best of the best. I have been training hard and I believe in myself. I will be ready to come out and win.

“We’re fighting in Houston because I don’t think that I’m in a position to choose or dictate anything right now. I will fight anywhere in order to make my dream of becoming a champion come true. If we have to fight on the moon, then let’s fight on the moon.

“I believe that power is the great equalizer, a legit advantage in boxing, since it can change the fortunes of any fighter inside the ring. I consider my power an advantage in my favor.

“I have fought and prepared so hard for the opportunity to go and get this championship belt. I have done things the right way, there is no reason for things to go wrong. As I said previously, I am not in a position to choose where to fight. I just have to keep training hard like I have since I was four years old.

“I’m happy that there will be fans in the stands. I don’t feel any pressure, because it’s all about Latin pride and support and that motivates me.

“I think Charlo is a great fighter, super talented and the world champion for a reason. I have been preparing my whole life for this.

“I don’t think that all Mexicans just go on attack mode by default, you also have to be smart and think things through depending on how the fight goes.”

Ronnie Shields, CHARLO’S TRAINER:

“Jermall Charlo has worked his butt off in the gym and he continues to do that. To defend your title in your backyard, in your hometown, that’s a very special thing. Not only is it going to be special because of that, it’s going to be special because Juneteenth is a very special day for all African Americans in the state of Texas. We’re looking forward to a great fight. Montiel is a really great fighter and we know we can’t underestimate anybody. We’re going to be in the best condition we’ve ever been in every time we fight and we’re going to continue to do that. We’re looking forward to having everybody come out for this great celebration.

“I think a lot of people were surprised how easily Jermall beat Sergey Derevyanchenko. He was the No. 1 contendor. He was the mandatory defense. He gave Triple G problems. He gave Danny Jacobs problems. And Jermall beat him.”

EDUARDO MONTIEL, MONTIEL’S TRAINER:

“Training camp is an ongoing process. Things are going swimmingly, just like we wanted them to. We are very happy and so glad people have welcomed us here in Houston with open arms.

“I’m hoping for Montiel to be in his best physical, mental and emotional shape to come out with a win on June 19. Our biggest advantage right now is that we are already settled in here in the United States, free of the distractions and temptations we might have back home in Mexico.

“I think that a victory of this magnitude would make Montiel the face of Mexican boxing, rubbing elbows with the Canelos of the world. Life would change overnight for him.”

Charlo has established himself as a force in two divisions and will seek to thrill his hometown crowd against Mexico’s Montiel, in a first-of-its-kind Juneteenth Day boxing celebration. Charlo will fight in Houston for the fourth time as a pro and look to keep his undefeated record intact against the upset-minded Montiel.

The event is promoted by Lions Only Promotions and TGB Promotions. Tickets for the live event go on sale tomorrow, Quinta-feira, Maio 13 em 12 p.m. CT and can be purchased attoyotacenter.com. Leo vs. Alameda is promoted in association with Mayweather Promotions.

Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) will return to fight in his hometown for the first time since a June 2019 unanimous decision victory over Brandon Adams on SHOWTIME. The 30-year-old most recently scored an impressive victory over top middleweight contender Sergey Derevyanchenko in their September 2020 confronto. Charlo has held the WBC middleweight belt since 2019, after a championship reign at 154-pounds that lasted from 2015 Através dos 2017. He has compiled a perfect 6-0 record since moving up to middleweight and owns victories over former champions Julian Williams, Austin Trout and Cornelius Bundrage at super welterweight.

“It’s great to be back in the ring, headlining on SHOWTIME and defending my title in front of my hometown fans in Houston,” said Charlo. “Fighting on Juneteenth means a lot to me because there is a battle going on far greater than this. Dito, I have to handle my business on June 19. Montiel is a tough, jovem, power puncher. I know he wants my crown, but I’m hungrier than ever and ready to put on a show for my fans. Get ready for a special, explosive night.”

Representing his native Los Mochis, Sinaloa, México, Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs) has earned knockouts in all 22 of his pro victories, as the heavy-handed brawler established himself as a hard-hitting force. The 27-year-old has put together an unbeaten streak since moving up to middleweight, first competing at the weight in September 2017, and most recently scoring a first-round knockout victory over longtime contender James Kirkland in December 2020. He owns stoppages of Marco Reyes and Gustavo Castro, and a draw against Hugo Centeno, Jr. no peso médio. Montiel had previously campaigned at welterweight and super welterweight, dropping a February 2017 bout to former champion Jaime Munguia in a 147-pound fight.

“I know that I am fighting the best middleweight in the world, but he has never faced someone who can punch like I can,” said Montiel. “All my losses in the past are from not training properly and trying to win by one-punch knockout. I’ve grown up and become a man since then. I proved that I was different when I beat Marco Reyes in 2019, and I haven’t left the gym since then. I’ve worked hard every day to become world champion and I will display everything I’ve learned on June 19.”

The 22-year-old Cruz (21-1-1, 15 KOs) shot up the lightweight rankings in 2020, announcing his presence with an electrifying first-round knockout over veteran Diego Magdaleno in September. Cruz followed that up this March, when he won a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Matias Romero. Since making his U.S. debut on the undercard of Jermall Charlo vs. Dennis Hogan in December 2019, the Mexico City-native has been unbeaten in his four ring appearances. This will mark his fifth fight in 20 meses, the last four of which will have come on SHOWTIME, including headlining ShoBox: A próxima geração em fevereiro 2020.

“Me and Vargas are going to show the fans true Mexican-style boxing on June 19,” said Cruz. “He is also from Mexico City, so I know this fight will be toe-to-toe. It’s my time to show the fans that I’m the best Mexican lightweight in the world. In with the new, and out with the old. I want to thank my promoter, Senator Manny Pacquiao, for his support and belief that I will become world champion very soon.”

Also a native of Mexico City, Vargas (27-2-2, 19 KOs) won a 130-pound title in 2015 by defeating Takashi Miura in one of the year’s best fights. The 36-year-old would go on to fight Orlando Salido to an action-packed draw before losing his title to Miguel Berchelt in another memorable affair. Vargas went on to defeat Stephen Smith and Rod Salka before losing in his rematch with Berchelt in 2019. Mais recentemente, Vargas began campaigning at lightweight, scoring back-to-back victories with a technical decision over Ezequiel Aviles in October 2019 and a TKO over Otto Gamez in November 2020.

“I only know how to fight wars and the fans should expect nothing less on June 19,” said Vargas. “I am a warrior, and people are going to remember the reasons why I was in two Fight of the Year battles when they see me in the ring with Isaac Cruz. I want to thank my whole team for putting together this fight that I know the fans will enjoy.”

Leão (20-1, 9 KOs), who fights out of the Mayweather Promotions stable, became the first world champion from his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M., since legendary three-division champion Johnny Tapia, when he defeated Tramaine Williams by unanimous decision in August 2020. The 26-year-old dropped the belt when he lost a decision to unbeaten Stephen Fulton Jr. em janeiro no canal Showtime. Leão, who trains in Las Vegas, will look to re-establish his position in the stacked 122-pound division on June 19.

“I’m excited to get back in the ring for this fight,” said Leo. “I wasn’t the same fighter in my last fight, as I was when I won the title. That’s given me a big chip on my shoulder. I figured out my mistakes and learned a lot about myself. I’m here to show people that I’m still a top contender and a threat in this division. Alameda is a real contender and he’s not an opponent I’m taking lightly. Whoever comes out on top in this fight will be right there for another title shot and I plan on that being me.”

The 27-year-old Aaron Alameda (25-1, 13 KOs) was able to stop Luis Nery’s knockout streak but came up on the short end of the decision in their super bantamweight title fight last September. Prior to the Nery fight, the Sonora, Mexico native had back-to-back knockouts over Jordan Escobar and Breilor Teran. Profissional desde 2014, his previous action in the U.S. saw him earn a sixth-round knockout over Andre Wilson in 2016.

“I can’t wait for another big fight on June 19,” said Alameda. “I showed that I belong with the best in my last fight against Luis Nery, and I will be even better against Leo. My goal is to become world champion and I plan on displaying everything I’ve worked on in this fight. I’m excited to battle Leo and give the fans a great show.”

SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO TRAINING CAMP NOTES

“Jermall has never faced anyone like me before. I’ll apply more pressure than he’s used to”

Top Rated Contender Derevyanchenko Faces WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo this Saturday, Setembro 26 Headlining Part One of CHARLO DOUBLEHEADER, a SHOWTIME PPV® Event Presented by Premier Boxing Champions

NOVA IORQUE – Setembro 21, 2020 – Top contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko believes that his combination of skills and experience will make him the toughest challenge that WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo has faced in his career, as they near their showdown this Saturday, Setembro 26 headlining part one of CHARLO DOUBLEHEADER, a SHOWTIME PPV event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

“I’ll definitely be his toughest test at middleweight,"Disse Derevyanchenko. “Jermall has never faced anyone like me. I’ll apply more pressure than he’s used to. He’s also never faced anyone with my footwork. I’ll fight more on the inside than his previous opponents.”

Derevyanchenko sports a 13-2 pro record with 10 nocautes, following an extensive amateur career that included representing his native Ukraine at the 2008 Olympics as part of his 390-20 overall ledger. Profissional desde 2014, Derevyanchenko’s experience in the amateurs has aided him as he climbed up the middleweight division in the paid ranks.

“My amateur experience has helped me a lot,"Disse Derevyanchenko. “I came to the pros with much more experience in the ring than most other fighters and it’s been a big part of what I’ve accomplished. I believe that all of that experience will help me get the win on Saturday and take Charlo’s belt.”

The 34-year-old now lives in Brooklyn and has avoided any negative training impact of the pandemic by working with his head trainer Andre Rozier at their private gym in New Jersey. Setembro 26 will be Derevyanchenko’s third world title fight, after losing a narrow decision to Gennadiy Golovkin last October and a split decision against Daniel Jacobs in 2018. Each of his previous title fights have presented different experiences that he can take into the Charlo fight, based off the similarities and differences between the opponents.

“Golovkin is a very different fighter than Charlo, but Jacobs is similar stylistically, so that’s something I’ll be used to,"Disse Derevyanchenko. “This training camp has been very similar to camps for my previous fights though. We just brought in different sparring partners for this one. We’re using fighters who can show us what Charlo will bring to the ring.

“We’re making necessary adjustments based off all our experience and developing a game plan specifically for Charlo. The sparring partners have been giving me great work and I’m absolutely ready for September 26.”

In both of his title opportunities, Derevyanchenko has suffered a knockdown in the first round, only to battle back and nearly win the fight. Despite the similar script, Derevyanchenko is not focusing on those opening round mistakes as he prepares for Charlo.

“I’ll be very focused in the early rounds against Charlo, we’re not dwelling on the past,"Disse Derevyanchenko. “We always have an eye looking forward. I’ll try to get the win faster against Charlo, so we’ll be applying more pressure early.

“Those first round knockdowns were just brief moments in those fights. I quickly moved on, put them behind me and fought my way back into it. I told myself that I may have lost the first round, but I just had to be better in the remaining rounds.”

With fight week here and the bulk of the hard training behind him, Derevyanchenko is prepared for the challenge Charlo presents, no matter how the fight goes or which strategy Charlo enters the ring with.

“I’m not solely focused on the fight going one certain way, we just have our game plan and we’ll see what happens in the ring,"Disse Derevyanchenko. “If I can knock him out, I’ll be ready to go for it. But if it goes 12 rounds, I have all of the skills to win a decision.”

LUIS NERY TRAINING CAMP QUOTES

After I win this belt on September 26, I want Brandon Figueroa next!”

Unbeaten Former Champion Nery Takes on Undefeated Aaron Alameda for Vacant WBC Super Bantamweight Title Saturday, Setembro 26 In Co-Main Event of Part Two of a SHOWTIME PPV® Doubleheader Presented by Premier Boxing Champions

NOVA IORQUE – Setembro 17, 2020 – Ex-campeão invicto Luis Nery shared updates from his training camp as he prepares to take on undefeated Aaron Alamedafor the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight World Championship in the co-main event of part two of a SHOWTIME PPV doubleheader Saturday, Setembro 26 em um evento apresentado pela Premier Boxing Champions.

Para esta luta, Nery is training for the first time under the guidance of Eddy Reynoso at his gym in San Diego, alongside Canelo Alvarez and former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr., entre outros. Although Nery enters this fight on an 11-fight knockout streak, he has been able to hone other facets of his arsenal under Reynoso.

Coach Reynoso has been helping me a lot with my defense,” said Nery. “We’re working on boxing with my hands up and on my accuracy. He’s helping me do everything possible to maximize my power and speed. I feel very strong and I’ve been sparring 12 rounds for a while now. I’m extremely ready for September 26 and focused on nothing but that.

Nery and Alameda were set to square off in a bantamweight battle on SHOWTIME® em março, before the pandemic delayed that showdown. With Rey Vargas vacating his 122-pound title due to an injury, the rescheduled fight came with the addition of that title being on the line. While he knows Alameda will bring his best, Nery is confident in continuing his winning streak.

I know that Alameda is a tough, undefeated fighter who’s going to leave it all in the ring,” said Nery. “I know he wants to win, apenas como eu, and I know he’s working every day so that he can perform to his maximum potential. I believe that my speed and my overall talent will make me the winner. The postponement has given me even more time to train and prepare for this matchup. Eu sou 100% ready.

Nery has long established himself as a force in the bantamweight division, winning his title in 2017 by traveling to Japan and handing Shinsuke Yamanaka his first loss via fourth-round stoppage. While September 26 is his first championship fight at 122-pounds, he has his sights set on dominating the super bantamweight division and beyond.

At this moment, I want to fight at both 118 and 122-pounds,” said Nery. “There are a lot of great fights to be made in those weight classes. Sometime next year, I want to move up to 126-pounds so that I can dominate all three divisions.

The stacked September 26 PPV undercards feature a wealth of champions and top talent at both the 118 e 122 classes de peso. If he’s victorious next Saturday night, Nery has his eyes on a fight against WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Brandon Figueroa, who defends his title against Damien Vazquez in the co-main event of part one of the doubleheader.

After I win this belt on September 26, I want Brandon Figueroa next,” said Nery. “I’m not overlooking Alameda at all, but if I had my choice, me and Figueroa would give the fans a great show my next time in the ring.

I’m striving to be one of the best to ever lace up a pair

Derevyanchenko calls himself ‘The Technician’, but we’ll see how technical he is once I start putting my jab in his face.

HOUSTON – Setembro 14, 2020 – Unbeaten WBC Middleweight World ChampionJermall Charlo brought fans and media into his training camp Monday with a virtual media workout as he prepares to face top contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko to headline part one of a first-of-its-kind SHOWTIME PPV doubleheader Saturday, Setembro 26 em um evento apresentado pela Premier Boxing Champions.

Charlo was joined Monday by his longtime trainer Ronnie Shields as he showed off a variety of skills while training for the toughest opponent of his pro career. Charlo vs. Derevyanchenko will headline the first part of the special PPV doubleheader that begins at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, before his twin brother and WBC Super Welterweight Champion Jermell Charlo steps in for the main event of part two against WBA and IBF 154-pound champion Jeison Rosario.

The workout streamed live on the PBC YouTube page and can be viewed in its entiretyAQUI. Here is what Charlo and Shields had to say Monday:

Charlo JERMALL

I know that it’s my time to shine and my time to give everyone the best that I can give. I’m striving to be one of the best to ever lace up a pair of gloves.

The fans that love me can expect me to do what I do. The fans who don’t know about me, they’re going to see a smart, strong and athletic fighter. You’re going to see all of it in the ring on September 26.

I came from nothing, so I want to put everyone on. I want to make sure Ronnie Shields gets into the Hall of Fame. We’re looking to do something in boxing that no one has ever done.

When I look outside this gym, I say there’s no way I’m losing. I’m carrying my whole family on my back. Houston, we have another one. I’m doing it for everybody here.

I’m telling those other middleweights to buckle your seatbelts. It’s lift off. Everyone that doubted me, everyone who wants a chance, you’ll get your turn. I’m running the show. You just stay locked in.

My power is growing along with me. With some fights you need to add more power and sometimes your power just naturally increases. I’ve gotten a lot stronger and a lot smarter, so I’ve been able to use my skills to go along with my power heading into this fight.

Derevyanchenko is a come forward fighter. He’s going to bring a lot of power and speed with good technical skills. He calls himself ‘The Technicianbut we’ll see how technical he is once I start putting my jab in his face. I’m going to use all my natural skills in this fight.

After I win this fight the sky is the limit. I know people will respect me a lot more after this, but I’m focused on only this fight. This fight is another big stepping stone toward even bigger fights to come.

A lot of people don’t really know where the Charlos came from and they’re getting the chance to learn it throughout this time. It’s taken to this point for everyone to see that we belong on this big stage. I’m grateful for everyone around me who’s embraced me with love.

We don’t have too much longer to be doing this. Where are the rest of the belts at? Estou pronto. Watch next Saturday night, because I’m making this statement loud for everyone who doubted me.

Ronnie Shields, Instrutor de Charlo

It means a lot to be in this position. It shows you that your fighter has made it to the top. He’s at the point where people want to see the champion of the world. It’s great to be there with him and help him to this level in the sport.

At this moment, Jermall is in great shape and he’s just about ready. We still have another week of hard training to go, then we’ll start coming down next week. He’s really sharp right now and we just have to keep him that way.

Houston loves winners and this guy is a winner. People know he’s a family man also and he works very hard for everything he’s gotten. He’s always shouting out Houston because this is where he’s from and it’s important to him.

I’ve had so many good fighters in my career, but Jermall is right up there at the top with Evander Holyfield, Vernon Forrest and Pernell Whitaker. He works hard and pays attention to what he has to do. The thing that separates them is that he knows how to watch his opponent and he knows what he’s in for.

Just like every opponent, we expect Sergiy to be at his best. We expect Sergiy to come in and try to win and be the best he can possibly be. Jermall is doing the same thing. No stone will be left unturned. We go over the game plan every day.

“Perder meus títulos me motivou ainda mais.

No Sábado, Setembro 26, o projeto gêmeo sem precedentes apresenta WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo revestimento top contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko no evento principal do primeiro card.
