J RUSSELL PELTZ HONORED BY PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL Philadelphia icon recognized for half century of promoting boxing in the city

PHILADELPHIA PA — Members of the Philadelphia City Council presented a resolution honoring J Russell Peltz at this morning’s council meeting on behalf of President Darrell Clarke. The resolution recognized Peltz’ contribution to the city over 50 years of promoting boxing in Philadelphia. President Clarke serves as the City Councilman for District 5, where Peltz promoted his first boxing event at the Blue Horizon on September 30, 1969.

The resolution gave a brief history of Peltz’ career before thanking him for the profound impact he had on the city over the last 50 χρόνια. It also expressed the wish that the next generation of boxing promoters continue to preserve Philadelphia’s legacy as a boxing stronghold.

Peltz was gracious in his remarks, and had the crowd laughing when he began speaking about his career.

“I’m humbled to be honored by the city,” he began, “because if you think about it, the only thing I’ve done over the last 50 years is start fights that other people finish.

“I’ve grown up in the greatest fight city in the world,” he continued. “Some of the greatest fighters of all time have fought for me – hall of fame fighters – beginning with my first love, Bennie Briscoe in 1969, and going all the way up through one of my fighters winning a world title in Bejing, China a couple years ago by the name of Jason Sosa.”

He closed his remarks with a story about playing “Cowboys & Indians” as a kid, and how he thought it would be so cool if he could just play the game as an adult, instead of going to work every day. “Τίμια, that’s what my career has been like,” είπε, and thanked the Council for the honor.

Peltz was joined in attendance by his wife, Linda, and his protege and the promoter of Friday’s “Blood, Sweat and 50 Έτη” fight card at 2300 Κονίστρα, Michelle Rosado.

To mark “The Boy Wonder’s” 50-year milestone




ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΕΙΑ, PA–J Russell Peltz was 22 years old when he promoted his first boxing card 50 years ago at the legendary Blue Horizon. Από Οκτώβριο. 4, Peltz will celebrate half a century as a boxing promoter with a card at the 2300 Arena that will reflect his reputation for promoting Philly vs. Philly, no-quarters-given bouts.


The eight-fight card, promoted by Raging Babe, will feature junior welterweight Victor Padilla, of Berlin, NJ, by way of Vieques, Πουέρτο Ρίκο, στο κύριο γεγονός. Padilla, που προωθείται από την DiBella Entertainment, is undefeated in five fights, all by way of knockout, and is considered by Peltz and others to be a future world champion. Peltz will serve as matchmaker for the event.


It has been nearly 20 years since Peltz received the Long and Meritorious Service award from the Boxing Writers Association of America and Philadelphia Sportswriters Association, followed in 2004 by his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. While others might have considered retirement, Peltz has gone on to promote more than 150 additional events, bringing his total number of promoted shows to nearly 1,000. He has promoted or co-promoted more than 40 world championship fights.


After starting his career as sports editor of the Temple News–the daily student newspaper at Temple University–and then on the sports copy desk at the Evening and Sunday Bulletin, Peltz traded in his typewriter for the roller coaster that is professional boxing. He was dubbed “The Boy Wonder,” when he sold out the 1,346-seat Blue Horizon in his first event on Sept. 30, 1969, a night that featured a middleweight main event between Bennie Briscoe, της Φιλαδέλφειας, and Tito Marshall, of Panama. The standing-room-only crowd was 1,606.


In more recent years, he’s taken Michelle Rosado (aka Raging Babe) under his wing, mentoring her and showing her the ins and outs of the boxing business with his unique brand of tough love.


“I can think of no one better to promote my 50th Anniversary Celebration,” said Peltz. “I have been able to sit in the passenger seat the last couple years while Michelle drove and I’m excited to share this special event with her.


“It seems like yesterday I was sitting outside the Blue Horizon in North Philly, selling tickets out of my car for my first card after the box office closed for the day. From there to the old Arena in West Philly, then to The Spectrum in South Philly, it’s been quite a ride. Bout headlines Guerra De Gallos at Casino Del Sol

Raging Babe’s Michelle Rosado had to think outside the box when negotiating the card’s main event. One camp wanted an eight-round fight and one wanted a six. Ροζ, consulting with her mentor, Hall-of-Fame Promoter J Russell Peltz, lamented the potential loss of a solid, local main event. Peltz had a solution. “Why not meet in the middle and make it seven rounds?” Rosado was skeptical. “I told him to get outta here,” Rosado said. “I was laughing, but Peltz wasn’t joking. School was in session.”

 

 

 

There was a precedent. Peltz told the story of “The Long-Haired Boxer” Edwin “Chu Chu” Malave vs. Χάρολντ Γουέστον, Jr. in a welterweight bout that took place in August of 1971 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Malave wanted the bout to be eight rounds, and Weston wanted 10. The New York State Athletic Commission proposed that the bout be nine rounds. Malave went on to win a split decision, with two judges scoring the fight 5-4 in his favor, and the third scoring it 5-4 for Weston.

 

 

 

Rosado had her fight.

 

 

 

“I bought right into it when Russell told me about the Malave-Weston bout,” she said. “I knew we had a good fight, and there was something special about having a seven-round main event.” Both Ramirez and Valdez’s teams agreed, and the Pascua Yacqui Commission sanctioned the seven-round bout. Στις Νοεμβρίου. 17, Tucson boxing fans will see Arizona’s first seven-round bout between two local “gallos.”

Ατλάντικ Σίτι – Φεβρουάριος 20, 2018 – Boxing in Atlantic City has been prevalent for more than 45 χρόνια. One man who has been in the center of a lot of the action on the boardwalk has been International Boxing and Atlantic City Boxing Hall-of-Fame promoter and matchmaker J Russell Peltz.

The Philadelphia legend, who has promoted scores of cards in the shore town, is making matches for the Φεβρουάριος 24 card at The Showboat Hotel that will feature Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna vs. Γαβριήλ “Τίτο” Bracero in a 10-round battle for the WBC Fecarbox Welterweight championship.

“I did my first fight in 1973,” said Peltz, who has run shows in just about every property in Atlantic City.

It is only fitting that Peltz is the matchmaker with promoter Rising Star Promotions in the South Jersey based promotional outfit’s effort to bring Atlantic City back to prominence as the the premier fight destination on the East Coast.

Peltz is hoping LaManna-Bracero is added to the memorable bouts that Peltz has been involved in Atlantic City:

“The fight was televised by local cable channel PRISM (Jim Barniak and Bob Wright, both deceased, did the commentary) and it was for Fletcher’s USBA middleweight title.

“This was the most brutal fight I ever saw, even more brutal than Matthew Saad Muhammad-Marvin Johnson I. This was a closet classic since few saw it on PRISM. The fight was toe-to-toe for seven rounds, no knockdowns, until ringside doctor stopped it between the seventh and eighth round. They could have fought this one in a phone booth.

“Singletary was taken to hospital after fight.

“Αργότερα, when we couldn’t find Fletcher, we broke into his hotel room, and he was out cold on the floor. We couldn’t get an ambulance so we (Marty Feldman and I) put him in the back of a police wagon and rode with him to the hospital where the doctor told us if we hadn’t found him he would have been dead.

“Singletary kept saying in the pre-fight buildup that no 12-2 TV fighter was gonna beat him. This was a reference to Fletcher getting into the first ESPN tournament and winning while Singletary had been plying his trade for years (24-2 τότε) and never got that kind of exposure, just on PRISM. Bolden took the second knockdown in the 10th on his knees.”

“Jeff Chandler, in the most brilliant performance of his Hall-of-Fame career out-boxed, out-punched and out-muscled future champion Gaby Canizales, του Τέξας, επί 15 rounds to defend his WBA bantamweight title for the seventh time by unanimous decision. No one thought he could stand up under Canizales’ body attack but it was Chandler’s body and head attack that kept Canizales at bay for the entire fight. Just magnificent.”

“Unknown lefty Gary Hinton gave IBF 140 pound world champ Aaron Pryor all he could handle, but a 14th-round knockdown helped Pryor gain a 15-round split decision with Sylvester Stallone in attendance. He was our partner at the time with Pryor. It was Pryor’s last successful title defense.”

“Moving from light heavyweight to cruiserweight, Mussachio appeared to have out-boxed Wilson for 11 rounds in their USBA cruiserweight title fight, but Wilson drilled Mussachhio with a monstrous overhand right 41 seconds into the 12th round for the knockout win.”

Κατά την προετοιμασία για Της Παρασκευής Πουέρτο Ρίκο Boxing Classic κατά τη 2300 Arena στη Φιλαδέλφεια, υποστηρικτής J Russell Peltz, Διεθνές Boxing Hall of Fame, κατηγορία 2004, υπενθυμίζει την έναρξή του στην πυγμαχία 46 χρόνια πριν.

Σήμερα γιορτάζω, ή ίσως παρατηρήσει, με την 46η επέτειο από την πρώτη μου αγώνα ως εγκιβωτίζοντας. Θα μπορούσε να περιμένει άλλα τέσσερα χρόνια για να γράψω αυτή την ιστορία, αλλά αυτό φαίνεται σαν ένα μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα από τώρα και ακόμα μεγαλύτερη στοίχημα για την επίτευξη αυτού ορόσημο.

Είδα μόνο μερικά λεπτά από την πρώτη μου κάρτα πυγμαχία. Ήταν Σεπτέμβριος. 30, 1969, στο Blue Horizon, που δεν έχουν ακόμη θρυλική-και ήμουν απασχολημένος στο box office, με τη μαμά, πωλούν εισιτήρια για το τελευταίο του 1,606 ανθρώπους που πιέζονται εκεί εκείνο το βράδυ για να παρακολουθήσουν middleweight Bennie Briscoe καταστρέψει Τίτο Μάρσαλ στο rematch τους. Κάναμε πραγματικά τους ανθρώπους μακριά εκείνη τη νύχτα και αυτό είναι κάτι που ποτέ δεν θα το ξανακάνω. Τι σκεφτόμουν?

Υπήρχε μια κακή επικοινωνία με την Ένωση που παρέχονται οι πωλητές εισιτηρίων, ώστε όταν απέτυχαν να δείξουν, I προσέλαβε μαμά-Δωρεάν, Φυσικά, και βοήθησε να πουλήσει τα εισιτήρια.

Είχα πολυπόθητο την πυγμαχία νικήσει στο Το Δελτίο, αλλά πήρα ανυπόμονος όταν ο Τζακ Fried, η πυγμαχία συγγραφέας, πήρε παράταση για την υποχρεωτική συνταξιοδότηση σε ηλικία 65 και δεν ήμουν έτοιμος να κρεμάσει γύρω από την αναμονή για αυτόν να αποσυρθεί ή, όπως θα έλεγε ο μπαμπάς, τα τινάξω.

Έτσι έκανα αυτό που κάθε 22-year-old απόφοιτος κολεγίου που υψώθηκε στο διάσημο Κύρια γραμμή Θα κάνω-έγινα εγκιβωτίζοντας.

Είχα σωθεί περίπου $5,000 στο κολέγιο δεδομένου ότι είχε εργαστεί με πλήρη απασχόληση σε αυτό που ονομάζεται Αστακός Shift στο Το Δελτίο, ξεκινώντας το καλοκαίρι μετά το κατώτερο έτος μου στο Ναό. Δούλευα από τις τα μεσάνυχτα για να 8 am, ιστορίες επεξεργασία, γράφοντας λεζάντες και τίτλους και να κάνει ξαναγράφει. Τότε είχα με το αυτοκίνητο από την 30η & Market Street στη Βόρεια Broad Street για το ανώτερο έτος μου στο Ναό, πάει στην τάξη από 9 Είμαι σε 1 μμ, Στη συνέχεια το αυτοκίνητο στο σπίτι για Bala Cynwyd να πάει για ύπνο.

Ήταν μια μετα-Ολυμπιακή χρονιά στη Φιλαδέλφεια και ήταν εκεί το ταλέντο σε κάθε γωνιά του δρόμου. Θυμάμαι το τέλος του καλοκαιριού του 1969, οδήγηση μέχρι Columbia Avenue, τώρα Cecil Β. Moore-και στρίβοντας δεξιά μετά 22d Street, όπου Κολούμπια μετατρέπεται σε Ridge. Δύο κτίρια από τη γωνία βρισκόταν το εύστοχα ονομάστηκε Café του Roach. Στην κορυφή του Café του Roach, μέχρι μια απότομη σκάλα, ήταν Ηλύσια Γυμναστήριο, διοικείται από Quenzell McCall, ο οποίος είχε κάνει τα οστά του κατάρτιση Percy Bassett και Leotis Martin και γατάκι Hayward και Briscoe και πολλές άλλες κορυφαίους μαχητές Philly.

Γνώρισα Σαμ Σολομώντα, ένα φιλικό στρογγυλό αντιμετωπίζουν τον άνθρωπο που ανήκουν σε ένα πλυντήριο στη δυτική Φιλαδέλφεια, και αυτός με σύστησε στον νέο μαχητικό του, ένα 17-year-old stud που έψαχνε να γυρίσει υπέρ. Το όνομά του ήταν ο Ευγένιος Hart. Sam παρατσούκλι Cyclone.

Ένα χρόνο νωρίτερα, σε ένα γυμναστήριο στο υπόγειο της εκκλησίας του Ευαγγελισμού κατά την 12η & Νόρις, ακριβώς έξω από την πανεπιστημιούπολη του Temple, Είχα συνέντευξη άλλος νεαρός ερασιτέχνης μποξέρ για μια ιστορία που έγραψα για Το Δελτίο. Το όνομά του ήταν Bobby Watts. Τον κάλεσε Boogaloo.

Δεν ήταν επαγγελματίας κάρτα αγώνα στη Φιλαδέλφεια από τον Μάιο και τοπικές φίλαθλοι ήταν έτοιμοι για δράση.

Είχα ονειρευτεί να έχουν την παιδική ηλικία το είδωλό μου, Hall-of-Famer Harold Johnson, στο main event, αλλά δεν μπορούσε να αντέξει οικονομικά το $2,000 ήθελε. Είχα γίνει φιλικό με τον Pat Duffy, έχει γράψει μερικές ιστορίες σχετικά με την ερασιτεχνική πυγμαχία, ενώ ήμουν στο Το Δελτίο. Duffy ελέγχονται οι ερασιτέχνες στην τρι-κρατική περιοχή και είχε το χέρι του στο πλεονεκτήματα, καθώς και. Ασχολήθηκε με Leotis Martin και Sammy Γκος και Bennie Briscoe και για την εγγύηση της $1,000 κατά ένα ποσοστό των εσόδων πύλη πήρα Briscoe να καταπολεμήσει ένα rematch με τον Μάρσαλ, ο οποίος είχε κτυπήσει Bennie τέσσερα χρόνια νωρίτερα.

George Hill, ο οποίος προπονείται σε Champs Γυμναστήριο, συμφώνησε να κάνει τις δικές του υπέρ ντεμπούτο εναντίον δικαστή.

Jimmy Toppi, Jr., ανήκει το Blue Horizon. Είχε προωθούνται αγώνες σε διάφορους χώρους Φίλι τη δεκαετία του 1940 και του 1950 και μόλις έμαθε για το Main Event μου, είχε προβλέψει την προδοσία. Toppi θα κλείσει το γραφείο του κάθε μέρα στο 2 μμ, γι 'αυτό θα το αυτοκίνητο πάνω στο Blue Horizon από το διαμέρισμά μου στο τμήμα Germantown της πόλης, παρκάρει έξω και να περιμένουμε να δούμε αν τυχόν οι πελάτες θα εμφανιστούν για να αγοράσουν εισιτήρια. Ο μπαμπάς ήταν στα υδραυλικά, θέρμανσης και κλιματισμού των επιχειρήσεων και πήρε 100 εισιτήρια κοντά στο ριγκ και τους έδωσε με τους συνεργάτες του. Μου καταβάλλεται για όλα αυτά, ήταν $5 ένα κομμάτι. Υποθέτω ότι ανησυχεί ότι δεν θα το κάνει στην πυγμαχία. Ο θείος μου ο Μπομπ ήρθε στον αγώνα και αρρώστησε μετά την κατανάλωση hotdog Blue Horizon.

Ήμουν στα γυμναστήρια κάθε βράδυ, Ηλυσίων και η 23η PAL στη Βόρεια Philly, Passyunk και η Juniper Γυμναστήριο στη Νότια Philly. Υπήρχαν άλλοι, αλλά αυτές ήταν η Fab Four.

Malcolm “Φλας” Gordon, ένας μακρυμάλλης Νέας Υόρκης πυγμαχία τοξικομανής ο οποίος είχε αγοράσει ένα μηχάνημα με πολύγραφος του Bar Mitzvah χρήματα χρόνια νωρίτερα, συμφώνησε να πουλήσει τώρα-θρυλικό προγράμματα του στο αγώνα για την 25 σεντ η κάθε μία.

Τομ Cushman, ο συγγραφέας του μποξ για το Daily News, ήταν ένας σημαντικός παράγοντας. Είχα συναντήσει Cushman σε Οκλαχόμα Σίτι λίγα χρόνια νωρίτερα. Είχε σταματήσει εκεί–στο δρόμο του Ανατολικού από το Ντένβερ για να ξεκινήσει τη νέα του δουλειά με το Daily News-να καλύψει ομάδα μπάσκετ του ναού σε ένα τουρνουά Χριστουγέννων και ήμουν εκεί ως ανταποκριτής Το Δελτίο.

Cushman ήξερε ότι η πυγμαχία συγγραφείς από άλλες εφημερίδες στη πόλη πήρε τα χρήματα κάτω από το τραπέζι από τους υποψηφίους να γράφω ιστορίες πριν από τον αγώνα και μου είπε αν ποτέ πιαστεί μου κάνει ότι θα μπορούσα να φιλήσω τη φιλία αντίο μας. Δεν είναι μια ευκαιρία!

Ο ερωτών εμφανιστούν την ημέρα πριν από την κάρτα μου: Είναι Peltz έτοιμοι να πάρετε εκδορά?

Εμείς sold out. Κατά τη χρονική στιγμή, ο 1,606 ανεμιστήρες παρόντες αντιπροσώπευε το μεγαλύτερο πλήθος στην ιστορία του Blue Horizon είναι. Η πύλη ήταν $6,010 με τα εισιτήρια στην τιμή $3 και $5. Ποσοστό Briscoe ήρθε για να $1,314.58 και Marshall περπάτησε έξω με $788.75.

Middleweight Όσκαρ Coor νικήσει τον Clarence Finney σε ένα all-τοπική τέσσερις-rounder για να ανοίξετε την κάρτα-για την ώρα, φυσικά, στο 8 μμ-και Cyclone Hart φύσηξε μακριά Νότιας Philly του Σέλντον Moore, ο οποίος δεν απαντήσει στο καμπανάκι για το δεύτερο γύρο. Έγραψε επίσης ότι μου (πρώτα) η σύζυγος και ζούσα σε ένα διαμέρισμα στην Germantown και τα μόνα πράγματα σε αυτό ήταν ένα στρώμα, μια τηλεόραση και μια γάτα που ονομάζεται Ophelia. Με τα χρήματα που κάναμε εκείνο το βράδυ ($1,438.83), Γκρέιντι έγραψε ότι ίσως τώρα θα αγοράσει κάποια έπιπλα.

Λίγους μήνες νωρίτερα, η γυναίκα μου με ρώτησε τι με έκανε να νομίζω ότι θα μπορούσε να είναι επιτυχής σε αυτήν την επιχείρηση. Της είπα ότι θα μου πάρει περίπου έξι μήνες για να φυσήξει τις οικονομίες μου, αλλά θα είχα ένα μεγάλο λεύκωμα μία ημέρα για να δείτε τα παιδιά μας για την ώρα ο μπαμπάς τους ήταν μια εγκιβωτίζοντας.
